Customer Reviews:
Excellent account .......2006-12-31
A tremendous amount of study involved; Beal received help from National Park services, College officials, archivists, and historical societies. There is an extensive bibliography for further study. Keep a dictionary close. Through eye witness reports we observe the details of the battles, the strategies used, the men who fought, the traversing of the land, the heartache, the despair, and the sadness. Descriptions of the chiefs and officers are also detailed. Misconceptions will be laid to rest.
Joseph was considered the leader of the Nez Perce, but there were many chiefs. It is not till towards the end of the book where we hear most of his words. He was a man of great wisdom; a diplomat, and a man of faith. He blames his men and the white man for the war; he tried to avoid it. "Hear me, my chiefs, I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."
The officers were amazed by the outstanding leadership, the resiliency and the exceptional fighting ability of the Nez Perce. By miscellaneous observers we understand their way of life: they were prosperous, welcoming, good natured, thoughtful, and forgiving; comparably more than other tribes. We get a good description of their physical appearance, early history, character, and home land.
The war began because of Indian retaliation against local minors. The military had difficulties tracking the bands down. The Nez Perce fought well and were able to allude the military throughout the northwest. The battle of the "Big Hole": some say one of the most bitterly fought in the annals of warfare. Indian Woman and children were killed, but some woman engaged in the fight. The story ends of course with their eventual surrender, for the purpose of saving his (Joseph) people. We follow their journey by land and river too the reservation (see "Trail Of Tears"). How they survived so weakened is a true testament to the will to survive. Some honored the treaty some did not. When will white man learn tell truth.
The white man has been called wicked for his actions, but this may not be justified. Settlers were quite sincere to treaty terms. Indians lacked unity, some committed murders and there was fighting between tribes. Although there were atrocities committed on both sides, there were few. It was destined to happen, although sad the way it went down.
Wish you well
Scott
story of the nez pierce.......2003-04-12
a good history of the nez pierce
this work could have been stronger if the author would had defined the nez pierce relationships with the other indian tribes better and whether or not the nez pierce became indian scouts themselves.
A Heartbreaker!.......2001-12-30
This book is gut-wrenching and difficult to read at times. It is packed with so much emotion. The book also helped me in understanding more about the Indian Wars and how they were fought on the Western Frontier. Good Book!
A Story of How Everything Went Wrong.......2001-09-04
Written in a vivid way which allows you to follow the flight of the Nez Perce as they struggled to survive, Mr. Beal keeps you reading until the heartbreaking end. This story of how a people were forced into battle, chased by the army and eventually shipped away, shows the errors of our past and adds perspective to the present. Mr. Beal's writing not only presents history, but helps to identify a culture that america tried to destroy within our own boundaries. A must read for anyone interested in the history of the American West.
A well-done piece of Native American history........1999-05-13
I Will Fight No More Forever is an excellent telling of the Nez Perce and their flight to escape destruction. The story shows the real maening of the Indian wars, and the real people behind the legends. A must-read for anyone interested in American history.

Book Description
Housesteads is the most popular site on Hadrian's Wall, with its well-excavated remains bringing us closer to the 800 men who garrisoned the fort at any one time. As James Crow charts the development and growth of the fort, as well as the enclosures and features outside its walls, he discusses the builders and occupants, the civilian population, and the history of its excavation during the last two centuries. This study is supported throughout with plans and photographs of the fort, artifacts, inscriptions, and excavators.

In Roman Fort, husband-and-wife team Mick Manning and Brita Granstom take readers on a journey through ancient Rome with an authentic and appealing cast of characters at work, at home, and at play. The sounds, smells, and textures of everyday Roman life are vividly evoked as young readers march through the rain with emperor Vespian's centurions as they escort Lepidina over the mountains and visit a very important queen, witness a gladiator show at an arena, battle with Felix, and visit the bathroom with brothers and noble Romans, Titus and Marcus. Ancient Romans spring from the pages of this fun, fact-packed scrapbook that features pages blotted with fingerprints, splashes of oil, and squashed insects.

Customer Reviews:
Just finished reading this.......2007-09-04
Good book. A cry for true freedom. An attack on artificial needs and the whole system of working too much and not enjoying life.
Truly, "To be alive is not the same as to live."
Awesome introduction to many different anarchist thoughts.......2007-05-21
Someone named Drew on down the review list said that this book is as anti-communist as George Orwell. I don't know if he is trying to be ironic but George Orwell fought in the Workers Party of Marxist Unification militia in the Spanish Civil War. So I guess in that respect this book is about as much of a red bash as a red bashes himself..... not in the least. George Orwell was not anti-red he was anti-authoritarian.
This book as any anarchist book is, is also anti-authoritarian. It will introduce you to the ideas of people who are anti-authoritarian, anti-exploitation, anti-racist and anti-sexist. It is a whirlwind ride of common sense that is so close that sometimes it feels beyond our reach.
[...].
Awesome Book on Practical Anarchy.......2006-04-27
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in freedom and practical anarchy, anyone unafraid to play at life, anyone who dares to live and think off the beaten path.
Very different from your standard commercial fare, this book has more heart, soul and mischief than the entire NY Times Bestseller list combined. The crimethinc ex-workers are definitely my kind of people.
The trees, the stars, the mountains are all alive. Are we?.......2006-03-23
Reading this book will give you an adrenaline rush equivalent to moshing at a really good punk show or making love in some far-away rainforest, your bodies and minds erupting like a red hot volcano. It reads like a fun conversation with a modern day Abbie Hoffman or Guy Debord (with a scratchy record of Chumbawamba playing in the background). Within these pages, the institutions of work, school, church, monogamy and capitalism come under attack, urging readers to live deliberately and passionately, wildly and freely, encouraging us with every waking moment to choose between generosity or greed, liberation or domination. There is no escaping one's mortality. Therefore, what really matters most: fighting on the streets for social justice or numbing away your pain with sitcoms and processed foods, the year you spent doing peace work in Chiapas or a meaningless lifetime of routine office labor? The choice is yours.
Interesting but seriously flawed.......2005-09-30
I'm not really sure what to think of some parts of this book, or to some extent the book as a whole. An interesting, obviously intelligent group of people wrote this, and made some parts deliberately ambiguous, so perhaps I can be forgiven my indecision. However, there are some parts that I find enequivocably repugnant.
The idea of a personal revolution, not based on an existing "system", is nothing new but I've rarely seen it expounded on at such length. And for what it is, it's done well. The layout is eye-pleasing, the writers are verbose and eloquent without being pretentious, the profiles of historical deviants can be quite illuminating, and there's a certain amount of wit, something I've not come to expect from anarchists. The exhortations to live life instead of simulating it, and rejecting allegiances, are inspiring. There are even some amazingly insightful comments on life and reality that reminded me of Brad Warner's "Hardcore Zen".
Unfortunately, where Warner was talking about a life of direct knowledge of reality and a morality based on that and interconnectedness, "Days of War, Nights of Love" seems primarily a celebration of selfishness. Ayn Rand for moneyless extreme leftists? Not quite, but it's exultation of individual fulfillment over all else is quite repulsive sometimes. They unabashadly consign morality as a concept to a Nietzschean trash bin, and celebrate adultery as a liberating act. The glowing section on Rimbaud leaves out entirely his greatest flaw (he was involved in the slave trade, something the writers must have known), but still portrays him as a cruel, greedy, and unpleasant man who used others up and went out of his way to dominate enemies. If this is their personal revolution, they're welcome to it.
Would I reccomend it? Absolutely. But I would reccomend it be read with an extremely discerning mind. If you're reading it for casual enjoyment the sheer amount of nonsense may put you off. If you're only budgeting for one crimethinc book, I'd put "Evasion" ahead of this.

Book Description
"Days and Nights succeeds not only because of its socio-political authenticity and lyrical style but because of its interweaving of anger and tenderness, elation and sorrow."
--The Nation
Days and Nights of Love and War is the personal testimony of one of Latin America's foremost contemporary political writers. In this fascinating journal and eloquent history, Eduardo Galeano movingly records the lives of struggles of the Latin American people, under two decades of unimaginable violence and extreme repression. Alternating between reportage, personal vignettes, interviews, travelogues, and folklore, and richly conveyed with anger, sadness, irony, and occasional humor, Galeano pays loving tribute to the courage and determination of those who continued to believe in, and fight for, a more human existence. The Lannan Foundation awarded the 1999 Cultural Prize for Freedom to Eduardo Galeano, in recognition of those "whose extraordinary and courageous work celebrates the human right to freedom of imagination, inquiry and expression."
Originally published in Cuba,
Days and Nights of Love and War won the Casa de lasAméricas prize in 1978.
Customer Reviews:
"A coversation with my memory".......2002-04-14
is as Galeano define "Days and Nights of Love and War". The author open the memory box and let escape the pain and the love, the sadness and the joy. That is not only his box, it's my box too, all latinoamericans' box. So, when we open it we live.
Combines straight-forward reportage with personal vignettes.......2001-05-20
The personal testimony of one of Latin America's foremost contemporary political writers, Eduardo Galeano's Days And Nights Of Love And War blends memoir journaling with an eloquent history to record the lives and struggles of the Latin American people under two decades of unimaginable violence and extreme repression. Galeano combines straight-forward reportage with personal vignettes, interviews, travelogues, and folklore with an impressive and engaging emotional enrichment that includes anger, irony, sadness, and humor. Days And Nights Of Love And War is very highly recommended for students of late 20th century Latin American political history and culture.
A gorgeous book --- heart-wrenching and inspiring........1997-09-08
This book is for anyone immersed in the human condition, waging a war internally and silently stuggling externally. Galeano's collection of thoughts and essays and stories stirs the emotions of the reader and forces them to consider the entirety of the Latin American canon of literature as a formidable one. It encompasses genres such as autobiography, biography, testimony, prose, and short story. This is poetry of the soul for the soul, and shouldn't be limited to those obscure literature classes dealing with oppression

Book Description
From his efforts to protect California's wild lands--including the state's majestic redwoods and its dynamic coastline--to his novel ideas about the educational and inspirational value of wilderness that continue to provoke debates to this day, this first biography of John C. Merriam (1869-1945) tells the story of the prominent paleontologist who became a visionary in the American conservation movement.
Customer Reviews:
Grandson looks back.......2005-03-04
Stephen Mark's work is a fair and readable biography of a difficult man with difficult ideas that have stood the test of time. Anyone interested in the history of convservation, national and state parks or the role of science in early 20th Century America will benefit from this book. And it's quite readable even to some who can't tell the Jurassic from Mickey Mouse.
