5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-11-11

I read one of the books about Helen Keller when I was nine years old, and I was hooked, at that age I could not put the book down, I actually memorized, taught myself the hand sign chart in the back of the book. I highly recommend this book. I am purchasing this book for my niece for Christmas, she loves to read. When you think you been short-cutted in life, read this. Then ask your self do you have it that bad?

4 out of 5 stars The dealf, blind, and mute girl........2002-10-16

Helen Keller had a bad illness when she was only nineteen mouths old. She lived, but the illness left her blind, deaf, and mute. At the age of five her mom and dad wrote a school that has blind and deak kids there. A teacher came and didn't get along with Helen at first, but later thay become the best of friends. This is a good book for anyone who would like to know what it is like to be blind, or deaf or even both at the same time. This is a relly good book and I think that anyone who will read it will like it.

5 out of 5 stars Helen Keller.......2002-04-12

...It's about a girl that is blind, deaf, and dumb. (As in can't talk) But later when she got a teacher named Anne Sullivan, she learned to do lots of things. When Helen was ten years old, she learned to talk. But still could not hear. I learned that if you are blind, deaf, or dumb, you could still do lots of things. I think you would like this book too.

I think all different kinds of people would like this book because people whoever likes biographies would like this book too.

3 out of 5 stars A GOOD INTERMEDIATE BIOGRAPHY.......2000-11-27

This book covers Helen Keller's life from her precocious babyhood wherein she greeted people with "how d'ye" and "tea, tea, tea" to her impressive adulthood as a crusader for persons who are blind.

Helen became blind and deaf after an extended, unidentified illness she suffered at 1 1/2. Unable to see, hear or speak, Helen communicated by a series of rudimentary signs and showed great precocity in learning to fold clothing and recognizing her own. She was also unruly and given to fits of temper, which was understandable considering her lack of access to ready communication.

When Helen was 3 months off 7, her now famous teacher, Annie Sullivan was hired to work with her. The redoubtable Ms. Sullivan taught Helen the manual alphabet and from her stellar progress at identifying familiar objects, taught her Braille as well. Helen's progress is nothing short of spectacular and she makes an impressive academic showing at the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston.

I liked the fact that this book did not dwell on that now tired scene at the water pump when Helen learns after having "water" spelled onto her fingers that "all things have a name." Instead of gasping and losing speed after the now overworked water pump scene, this biography picks up speed and the reader is treated to following Helen's academic progress at Perkins and later as a Radcliffe alumna.

This book glosses over Helen's radical socialism during her adulthood and also glosses over the challenges she and Annie faced as they matured together. It's a nice biography, but you do end up wanting more.

    Book Description

The Bastille, symbol of injustice and monarchial tyranny, surrendering to the Parisian throng; the hungry women of Paris, demanding bread from their king; the guillotine, revolutionary death machine, dispatching human lives amid the grotesquely gala atmosphere of the Place de la Revolution: Such dramatic images of a society in turmoil are vividly recreated in The French Revolution. Connelly and Hembree not only recapture the drama of the Revolution but provide a reasoned analysis of the causes, course, and legacy of this distinct turning point in history.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Text by a Great Teacher.......2004-09-17

I had the pleasure of having Professor Conelly this past summer for a class on the French Revolution and Napoleon at the University of South Carolina. This book was the only text for the class. Reading a book is one thing, but hearing it straight from the horse's mouth is another entirely.

I didn't realize just how well known and respected he was until I saw him interviewed on a NOVA special on Napoleon. Trust me, this guy knows what he's talking about, and he writes a simple, concise, easy-to-read explanation of France from 1789 - 1815.

    5 out of 5 stars It's all here.......2003-02-11

I completely agree with the previous review in every respect except I feel the book deserves more stars, given the "rating inflation" prevalent with so many of the titles reviewed. I wouldn't want anyone to be put off getting this book. Connelly has squeezed an incredible amount of information into a small amount of space. As usual, he is clear and entertaining. People interested in the period should check out his other titles.

    3 out of 5 stars Just Enough.......2001-09-29

Ideal for those starting out on their study of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era (as one would expect from a university history text), Owen Connelly's modest volume has much to recommend it: fresh, readable style; decent maps, a comprehensive bibliography (pointing the way for future purchases!) and quite a few interesting little kernels that one seldom comes across. I particularly enjoyed his insights into the siblings of Napoleon; Jerome's sponsorship of Gauss, Louis' campaign for breast-feeding, Joseph's conversion of El Prado into an art museum. I heartily recommend this book as an excellent staging ground for future operations into the hinterlands of Napoleonic literature. I also recommend Connelly's BLUNDERING TO GLORY as a vey good next step on your journey.

    Book Description

The long government service of Francois Boissy d'Anglas from 1789 to 1826 is unique, and his abundant writing provides a new look at the great drama of the French Revolution era. A moderate politician who served during the Revolution, the Empire, and the Restoration, Boissy d'Anglas's political views remained consistent during several critical periods when the fate of France was at stake. His political philosophy, based firmly on religious tolerance, freedom of expression, strong constitutional government and equality before the law, made it possible for him to weather the revolutionary storm and retain positions of influence in each of the regimes during the period. This book sheds new light on the role of moderates in the French Revolution and illuminates the changing political currents of the Revolution from Boissy's moderate perspective. A political moderate during a period of extremes, Boissy served for so long because he was committed to ideals, rather than to groups. Yet, during several periods in his career, Boissy also placed himself in danger by acting on his ideals. He held political beliefs that were both appropriate to his time and effective in application. He made many enemies, but the greatest testament to Boissy's life was the constant call of the French people for him to serve.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted and richly informative book.......2001-03-11

My only real complaint relates to something entirely outside the author's control: the price. Put simply, this book is darned expensive. But my recommendation to potential readers is: bite the bullet and shell out the dollars. THE BOOK IS WORTH IT!

Professor Ballard (who used to be a colleague in my own institution, but is now in the US again, I'm told) has based his book on a solid bedrock of French primary sources, few of them consulted by scholars before, and all of them used responsibly and creatively by Ballard.

Ballard's analysis is consequently sound and very convincing. I learned a great deal about life in revolutionary and Napoleonic France, and gained many unique insights into the way an 'ordinary' literate and cultivated Frenchman -- who just wanted to get on with life despite the chaos and instability that plagued his nation before Napoleon took power and the far greater degree of governmental interference after he did -- saw and understood the turmultuous events of his era.

The book's uniqueness lies in the fact that, by tracing one man's life throughout the entire period, it demonstrates the constantly evolving nature of the ideas, policies and practices that emerged and shaped French society.

The prose is clear and engaging, and helps to enliven what might at first glance seem an unimportant story about a man of no great repute. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and would recommend it without reservation to all readers, including French history specialists and the "lay" readers like myself.

                  Book Description

In this essential addition to French military history, Owen Connelly examines both the wars of the French Revolution, between 1792-99, and of Napoleon. Arguing that the importance and drama of the Revolutionary Wars have been neglected, and that the unceasing cut-throat politics that continued into the Napoleonic era has been overlooked, this analysis examines the two eras together to provide a broader context for warfare. Connelly demonstrates how the Wars of the Revolution shaped Napoleon as a military leader and how the practices of warfare developed and deployed during this period was to influence modes of combat throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, establishing trends discernable in the First and Second World Wars.

Wars of the French Revolution and Napoleon, examines the causes of the Wars of the Revolution and Napoleon and examines key questions including what was the impact of the population explosion of the eighteenth century on armies and war.

                      Book Description

Drawn from outstanding articles published in the Journal of Democracy, The Global Divergence of Democracies follows the enthusiastically received earlier volume, The Global Resurgence of Democracy.

The tremendous momentum of democratic expansion that characterized the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s has drawn to a halt. Significantly, this halt has not yet been followed by a "reverse wave"of democratic breakdowns, and democracy remains unchallenged as a global model and ideal of governance. The values of freedom, human rights, and popular sovereignty have continued to gain strength in the world. The first section of The Global Divergence of Democracies presents a few outstanding examples of the accumulating body of argument and evidence in favor of the universality of democratic principles and their basic compatibility with diverse religious and cultural traditions.

Nonetheless, in practice, the performance of the world's newer democracies has become increasingly varied, a trend reflected in the title of this volume: The Global Divergence of Democracies. The divergence in the quality or depth of democracy is matched by a parallel divergence in progress toward the consolidation of democracy. The second section of this volume is devoted to the hotly contested debate among leading scholars of comparative democracy of the utility and meaning of the concept of consolidation.

A third section examines some of the key building blocks of successful democracy, including political party systems, elections, federalism, the rule of law, a market economy, an independent judiciary, and civilian control of the military. The volume concludes with a series of appraisals of the divergent paths that democracy is taking both among and within various regions of the world, as well as in such key countries as Russia and China. With contributions by more than thirty of the world's leading scholars of democracy, this volume presents the most comprehensive assessment available of the state of democracy in the world at the beginning of the new millennium.

2 out of 5 stars Title should be Ross Jackson Rambles.......2005-10-03

I was so disappointed in this book that I put it aside for several years. Finally, this weekend, I picked it back up and read it cover to cover, just out of curiousity. It's kind of interesting, but it's not what it proclaims itself to be.

I originally found it by doing a search for "co-housing" and/or "ecovillages". Seeing the title, "And We ARE Doing It! Building an Ecovillage Future", and seeing that it even had a hammer and nails on the cover, I wrongly assumed that it would be about the actual building of an ecovillage. I was curious to see another insight into structures chosen and rejected, and what form of internal governance they chose and why. Well, this book has almost none of that.

Rather, this slim booklet is JT Ross Jackson's rambling musings about how Gaiacorp and Gaia Trust came to be. Just as he gets to the topic of co-housing, he makes a radical departure and devotes all of chapter 4 to his mystical and paranormal experiences with a spiritual awakening during a brief trip to India. At that point, I really felt like he'd lost a lot of credility to a wider audience. He goes on to do a good job detailing some of the problems he and his wife encountered setting up some "Green" financial institutions. And he does a good job describing some of the problems with the WTO and MAI and out of control Trans-National Corporations. He paints a picture of a world about to crash ecconomically, socially, and environmentally through greed. It's a good message, but the folks that need to hear it aren't going to wade through the rest of the book to get to that part. Then, he ends the booklet with a few pages of badly written sci-fi. While I happen to like futuristic sci-fi, I found it sad that the only part of the book that touched on a vision of an ecovillage and the inherent internal policy issues, had to be one set in 2064 with some very unlikely touches.

I really can't recommend this book. If you already tend towards "Green" and you want a fun read, this might be worth checking out. But, if you want info on actually establishing an ecovillage this book is going to disappoint you.

3 out of 5 stars Well written autobiography but not about ecovillages.......2002-12-31

Well written book (I read all of it even after I figured out that it was a finance book rather than about ecovillages). But .. It doesn't tell you anything about ecovillages and certainly not about How to do it. The author sounds like he could write such a book since he lived in an ecovillage for a while and follows that cause, but this book is about finance. I won't be keeping this book - I'll trade it at the used book store.

Wish I'd read some of the other reviews they mention this I just didn't read them.

3 out of 5 stars Where Are the Ecovillages?.......2002-08-08

Although messengers harkening bad news are often killed with the message, I must put this book in proper context. In all honesty, it is not really about ecovillages, and it only touches upon the ecovillage movement in passing. Although the book is provocative and unique, I was expecting something completely different. What I got instead was the autobiography of Ross Jackson, with only 5 percent of the book devoted to what the title lead me to believe was the theme of this book: namely, ecovillages.Don't get me wrong. As other readers have pointed out, Ross Jackson's autobiography is incredibly provocative. A brilliant financier and businessman, with an almost alter ego that dabbles in Indian mysticism, the early co-housing experiments of Denmark, and sustainable business, his curriculum vitae is fascinating. But Jackson only discusses ecovillages and the ecovillage movement he helped create after running through 10 unrelated chapters of biographical gibberish. He then goes on to drop the theme as soon as it is found, instead providing a less-than-adequate (although noble) critique of the global economy and free trade. I say less than adequate, because other books -- like "The Case Against the Global Economy" and "Field Guide to the Global Economy" -- do a much better job along these lines. Jackson also relies heavily on David Korten's "The Post-Corporate World," when in fact that book would stand a better substitute for over three-quarters of the content of this book. Why downgrade from Korten? By far and away the most interesting aspect of the book was the last chapter, "The Era of Ecovillage," which was a mini-sci-fi excursion into a future where ecovillages had become the norm. Now that was cool! I must admit. In fact, it was so cool I hand copied the entire thing, edited out typos and punctuation errors, added footnotes for missing or obscure references, and sent it off to every compatriot I could muster. But why did I have to wade through 115 pages (the book is only 128 pages) of seemingly contra-thematic biography and second-rate economic theory to find it? It, like the short chapter of how he and a small cadre of friends started Gaiacorp and the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN), should be posted on the GEN website. At least, that would seem logical to me. If you are interested in learning about ecovillages or the movement they have inspired, this book is a real letdown. Had the only information I have received about ecovillages came through this book, I would be forced to conclude that there is no serious Ecovillage Movement to speak of, nor would I have any concrete understanding of what an actual ecovillage looks like, or how it functions, in real life. For that, you would be well advised to check out the "Communities Directory: A Guide to Intentional Communities and Cooperative Living" .... It is the most comprehensive, detailed, and resourceful book about ecovillages, co-housing, and the broader intentional community movement available at present. If you just want the lowdown on GEN and ecovillages -- like, where they are and what they are about -- run a basic search on the internet the GEN homepage. Although all my website postings have been scrubbed by the review editors, I suppose I should try again in sisyphus-like futility to nevertheless provide you with that quick info. That said, see ... for concrete details on ecovillage movement. On the other hand, if you are interesting in reading the autobiography of Ross Jackson, look no further. This is the book.

                      j.w.k.

                      Building An Ecovillage Future

If you think all international financial-wizard business types are all the same, you have not heard of JT Ross Jackson, a true visionary and author of the new book AND WE ARE DOING IT! BUILDING AN ECOVILLAGE FUTURE (Robert D. Reed Publishers. September 2000. ISBN 1-885003-45-5. ()). A brilliant scientist and prominent financier, Jackson embarked on a clear path to financial success. He engaged himself and his money in the world of business and finance. Early on in his career he was dealt a major setback and found himself near financial ruin at the hands of a fraudulent stock firm. This experience provided new perspectives about money and clarified his ultimate goals in life. Jackson eagerly pursued his dream of moving his family into a shared housing community -- where several families lived on a compound, sharing responsibilities and providing a close-knit environment in which to raise children. He established a corporation (Giacorp) for the primary purpose of generating profits to finance progressive, social change. He also traveled through India where he discovered spiritual truths to guide him. Jackson's book provides a profound, insider's view of the real nature of the global economy and how it is being intentionally crafted by global corporations and institutions, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), which can exploit labor and resources at the expense of ecological, environmental, and human concerns. Readers will be amazed to learn about the foundation and operation of the WTO and the ramifications of the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI), a bill of rights and freedoms for transnational corporations. It is a document drawn up in complete secrecy, which if implemented would completely free corporate entities from any system of checks and balances. Jackson believes that global change will come only when an inevitable disaster occurs, which will force us to change our priorities and find a way to become sustainable without destruction. Still, he is hopeful about the future. Author of When Corporations Rule the World, David C. Korten says, "The work being done by Ross and Hildur Jackson helps us to see the alternatives toward a more intelligent and satisfying way of being, before we find ourselves in a struggle for physical survival." Recently, Jackson's main focus has been on the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN), which he co-founded with other ecovillage enthusiasts. Those who join GEN do so for a variety of reasons. Some join because they are ecologically motivated. They are reacting to environmentally unstable policies and tend to emphasize living in harmony with nature and self-reliance in food production and energy. Others are spiritually motivated and reject empty materialistic philosophy and the dogma of organized religion. They take responsibility for their own personal development. The socially motivated "ecovillagers" are interested in re-establishing a sense of community and are closely associated with the co-housing movement. Many ecovillages are blends of all three categories; the socially motivated ones are in the majority. People learn from one another by integrating each other's values and experiences. In the final chapter of his book, Jackson illustrates a functioning ecovillage of the future and paints a much brighter picture of what lies in waiting in the realm of possibility-that We Can Do It. We Will Do It. And We Are Doing It! This book is for anyone who is interested in environmentalism. It is an inspirational guide to the development of self-sustaining, green communities. It sets forth a clear, practical, and feasible vision of the ecovillage and how it can be achieved and maintained. Author of Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh, Helen Norberg-Hodge says of Jackson, "For me, Ross Jackson is one of the heroes of our time." Jackson is a hero and champion to many, and will be credited in the future as one who played an important role in protecting the essential human, ecological, and environmental resources of the world.
