Book Description

His second major venture into nonfiction (after Death in the Afternoon, 1932), Green Hills of Africa is Ernest Hemingway's lyrical journal of a month on safari in the great game country of East Africa, where he and his wife Pauline journeyed in December of 1933. Hemingway's well-known interest in -- and fascination with -- big-game hunting is magnificently captured in this evocative account of his trip. In examining the poetic grace of the chase, and the ferocity of the kill, Hemingway also looks inward, seeking to explain the lure of the hunt and the primal undercurrent that comes alive on the plains of Africa. Yet Green Hills of Africa is also an impassioned portrait of the glory of the African landscape, and of the beauty of a wilderness that was, even then, being threatened by the incursions of man.

Hemingway's rich description of the beauty and strangeness of the land and his passion for the sport of hunting combine to give Green Hills of Africa the freshness and immediacy of a deeply felt personal experience that is the hallmark of the greatest travel writing.

"There are some things which cannot be learned quickly, and time, which is all we have, must be paid heavily for their acquiring. They are the very simplest things, and because it takes a man's life to know them the little new that each man gets from life is very costly and the only heritage he has to leave." - ERNEST HEMINGWAY In the winter of 1933, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Pauline set out on a two-month safari in the big-game country of East Africa, camping out on the great Serengeti Plain at the foot of magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro. "I had quite a trip," the author told his friend Philip Percival, with characteristic understatement. Green Hills of Africa is Hemingway's account of that expedition, of what it taught him about Africa and himself. Richly evocative of the region's natural beauty, tremendously alive to its character, culture, and customs, and pregnant with a hard-won wisdom gained from the extraordinary situations it describes, it is widely held to be one of the twentieth century's classic travelogues.

1 out of 5 stars my least favorite hemmingway book........2007-06-22

this book is annoying. hemmingway's ego is out of control as he tries to make a big man of himself by shooting his way through an array of animals that of course mean him no harm at all. though i love much of his early work, this book makes him seem a truly horrible person. no wonder he had a long string of failed relationships and ultimatley killed himself. who could live with a jackass like this. in the end, he couldn't even stand to live with himself. this is an almost worthless book.

3 out of 5 stars Hemingway's writing.......2007-05-12

I found this writing less interesting than Rossevelt or Rourk work purchased at the same time. Perhaps the critics opinions are not always the best way to judge a work.

4 out of 5 stars He shoots everything including the Bull .......2007-01-29

Hemingway once said that a writer needs a built-in- B.S. detector. He forgot to take it along on this safari, though he is willing to stand corrected occasionally by his then- wife Pauline for errors of 'diarrhea of the mouth'. In any case the old Hem style is truly at work here, and it supplies us with some truly beautiful and moving passages. It also supplies us with a capsule survey of American Literature as provided by the great Hem in which he finds Emerson, Thoreau and Whittier all mind and no body, Melville all rhetoric and and an imagined mystery not really there, and only Crane, Twain and James worth keeping. His most famous riff is of course the one in which he says all American Literature derives from a book called Huckleberry Finn which he then says is great to a certain point only. Old Hem in a wonderfully snobbish way tells us that America really has no literature and that we need someone with the discipline of Flaubert and the something else of Stendhal if we are to have one. No doubt he is the one who intends to supply the product.
With all the posturing and the big - game hunting shtantz and the bull which accompanies it( And with it too the morally objectionable chest- beating at cutting down unarmed rhinos, lions, kudu etc. Hemingway is at times here at the top of his game. He was young and strong and relatively happy and had already made it as a writer though perhaps not in the way he ultimately wanted to.
The dialogue between him and the other hunters is to my mind over-mannered stylized pretentious crap.
But there are passages in the book which remind you that this is one of the truly great American writers, and one of , in my judgment, the best short story writers of them all.
I want to cite a passage just to give the feeling of how good old Hem could be when he was good.

" What I had to do was work. I did not care, particularly , how it all came out. I did not take my own life seriously anymore, any one else's life , yes, but not mine. They all wanted something that I did not want and I would get it without wanting it, if I worked. To work was the only thing , it was the one thing that always made you feel good , and in the meantime it was my own damned life and I would lead it where and how I pleased. And where I led it now pleased me very much. This was a better sky than Italy. The hell, it was. The best sky was in Italy and Spain and Northern Michigan and in the fall in the Gulf off Cuba. You could beat this sky; but not the country."

2 out of 5 stars lacks luster.......2007-01-17

Hemingway would have been better served by including more narratives than the ramblings of his characters. He seems to believe that it is important to capture what they actually said since they are real characters and not imaginary, but how realistic is that? Obviously, he couldn't write while hunting so undoubtedly he paraphrased their conversations when he was able to write - possibly days or weeks later. So if he's going to paraphrase then he should polish up the dialogue. And, perhaps exclude much of the pointless dribble. Some of which might not have been pointless if he had done a better job of developing the characters.

I do not recommend this book. Instead, I would rather point a potential reader of African safari stories to the works of Peter Capstick.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any hunter.......2006-10-08

In this rare non-fiction work from Ernest Hemingway he brings to life a month long hunting expedition that he spent with his wife Pauline in Africa in nineteen-thirty-three, but he writes it in the true Hemingway tradition. Rather than having it read like a documentary he writes it in the form of a novel.

Both entertaining and exciting it makes the reader hungry for the hunt. At times there is a bit of embellishment, such as making a clean kill on a Rhino at three-hundred yards with a Springfield rifle, (probably with open sights) in chapter four. Such probable exaggerations can be overlooked when we read his descriptions of the land and of the Masai and feel the remorse in his heart after wounding and losing a magnificent Sable Antelope to the jackals.

It's my opinion that Green Hills of Africa is one of the finest hunting stories that has ever been written. Not for the sheer content of the story itself, but for the style, for Hemingway's style, ... and for the way that he recounts a true life adventure in the style of prose that has always proven so riveting in his fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Another version of "True at First Light".......2007-06-28

Readers should be aware that this "last" book by Hemingway is not really new. In essence, it is just another version of the previous "last" Hemingway title, "True at First Light," published in 1999. Both are based on the same unfinished manuscript, but edited by different people & put out by different publishers - "True at First Light" was edited by Hemingway's son Patrick and published by Scribner. Of the 2 accounts, "Under Kilimanjaro" is significantly longer, clocking in at over 100 pages more than "First Light."

5 out of 5 stars Under Kilamanjaro.......2006-11-04

My first Hemingway experience, ironically, his final work? Halfway through my 4th of his offerings at this time, I am inspired to read his entire catalogue. The characters were varied, rich and endearing. The settings, their "campi"(camp) and surrounding areas, warmly described. One could sense the congenial yet mildly tempestuous dynamic maintained between the various tribesman and the employees of the British colonists and Hemingway. A familiar, symbiotic relationship of convenience. Takes a little while to become acquainted with the characters and their surroundings because of the frequent Swahili based references, but this should not deter one from moving forward or beginning this novel. In time, this becomes a non issue and actually contributes to the unique flavor of this work. When my wife started to read this novel, I suggested that she take note of the glossary at the back. In retrospect, I would have done so after reading the introduction, prior to beginning chapter one and perhaps used it as an occasional guide throughout the reading. A thoroughly enjoyable visit to early 1950's East Africa with a unique individual.

2 out of 5 stars A poor representation of a great man's skill.......2006-06-09

Hemingway left his memoirs of his African safari in a Havana bank vault. These memoirs were stored away as insurance for future publication. Hemingway had requested that these rough drafts never be published after his death. The Authors of this book should have respected his orders.
Under Kilimanjaro is an attempt to resurrect the ghost of Hemingway's great writing skills, and in so doing, it fails miserably. Part of Hemingway's trademark was to edit a work to its bare essentials. This book fails in this regard as well.
The plot essentially revolves around his wife's obsession to kill a lion. Her obsessive-compulsive temper tantrums are a common occurrence throughout the book. In other events, Hemingway is in a continues killing and drinking spree. There are, however, some entertaining moments, mainly when Hemingway's reflects on his past adventures in France and Spain.
In short this book should have been left in a vault in Havana. . For a more accurate account, one should read "the Snows of Kilimanjaro". Under Kilimanjaro amounts to a poor representation of a great man's skill. It is an attempt by his family to profit from his legacy by trying to resurrect his ghost.

5 out of 5 stars hemingways last hunt in africa.......2006-04-26

I`ve always been skeptical judging the hemingway books published after his death and whether they really could be hemingway books since they were mostly unfinished and unsigned by the author himself for publication. If a work that purports to be an attempt at artistic expression is unfinished or considered for that reason by the author to be unpublishable, can you really include it the canon of his works? Can his reputation be affected by it as these books have undoubtably affected hemingways? Or have they at least created a perception in the value of his work , from beginning to end?The Old Man and the Sea was the last book he authorized for book publication and anything that was to published after that(his death) should be judged seperately as a curiosity. All that said , Under Kikimanjaro is a marvelously written work in progress. To anyone who thinks hemingway lost his gift after the great work in the twenties and thirties, read some of this prose. It is reminisent of the Green Hills of Africa and you might even call it Green Hills of Africa 2 On the whole, is it a great book? No, but it is an entertaining one and a wonderful thing to have and to hear that voice again mostly in full stride. Now lets see the "The Garden of Eden" without the cuts and the letters being collected written by (whether you like him or not) the most influential literary stylist of the 20th century.Note added 17 may 2007;1st vol of letters to be published later part of 2008.

5 out of 5 stars An important, definitive polishing of Hemingway's final creation.......2005-12-05

Under Kilimanjaro was Hemingway's last book and was an autobiographical novel about the country he knew and grew to love when he spent several months in Kenya between 1953 and 1954 - but it was completed in 1956 and is the last of his manuscripts to be published in its entirety. No definitive Hemingway collection could be without Under Kilimanjaro: co-editors Robert Lewis and Robert Fleming have aspired to produce a complete reading text of Hemingway's original and their work makes for an important, definitive polishing of Hemingway's final creation.

5 out of 5 stars Great Journey.......2006-10-18

Ondaatje is one of my favorite writers. In Hemingway in Africa he takes the reader on a journey that Hemingway himself did not reveal. The photographs are wonderful and the writng is engaging. I truly enjoyed this unique book. Highly recomended.

Also Recomended: Woolf in Ceylon, Traces of Eden

2 out of 5 stars Ondaatje's no Hemingway.......2006-06-03

The best thing about this book are the repro photos of Hemingway and his contemporaries. Sadly, the author's own photos, scavenged from his previous trip files, are mostly poor stock. The same can be said of his writing. There are no new nor creditable insights into Hemingway here, in fact you will mainly learn about author Ondaarje's own quirks and predelictions, ad nauseum. Ondaatje is not a hunter, knows nothing of hunting, and yet presupposes his ability to dissect "Hemingway in Africa" when in fact hunting was the sole motivator for Ernest's 1933 trip to the dark continent. It's like a medical biography penned by a chimney sweep. You will get very little insight into Ernest Hemingway as the book wanders hither and yon. Even worse, the book is full of factual errors and shaky assumptions as Ondaatje waddles over the landscape searching Hemingway's trail. Ondaatje had previously been in Africa for a book on British explorers Speke and Burton. It is apparent he decided to capitalize on that experience and become a literary critic. He has failed miserably. Buy the book for the pictures, nothing else....

5 out of 5 stars True At First Light, the Truth.......2004-10-18

I enjoyed Christopher Ondaatje's book from beginning to end. It is well worth the price, and the sheer weight of the book is impressive, for although it is not a big book in height or in number of pages, when you pick it up youu feel the tension in your wrists and lower arms, for each page is extremely thick, creamy and rich, and most of them have photographs placed in them. Physically it is a luxury object.

And it certainly tells us a lot about Hemingway, particularly a facet of his life that I had never cared to peer too deeply into, thinking that his mania for hunting game revealed a side to his character even more contemptible than the others. But oddly enough reading this book had the opposite effect, and one winds up with a queer sympathy for Hemingway, and his adventures in the wild both during his early (30s) trip with Pauline Pfeiffer his second wife, which resulted in the stories, "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" and "The Snows of Kiliminjaro"--and then much later (20 years later), he and Miss Mary embarked on an ill-fated sequel to this safari that caused them both much grief and physical pain and he wound up writing the God awful TRUE AT FIRST LIGHT and during which he clearly went a little insane. All of this Christopher Ondaatje followed, the exact same footsteps, and his journey into the heart of Africa seems to have caused him no cavils at all.

I expect you'll like this book. It reveals a lot of truth and a lot of delicacy of perception.

Let's cut to the chase: yes, J.H. Hatfield alleges that, in 1972, George W. Bush was arrested for possession of cocaine and, with the help of his father, got the charges erased in exchange for performing community service. Other than that, however, Fortunate Son is a standard quickie biography of the Texas governor and frontrunner for the Republican nomination in the 2000 presidential race--and useful primarily because few people outside of Texas (for that matter, few people within Texas) know much about Bush's history and political record. It's all about connections, Hatfield says: if he'd had a different father, Bush "could be just another Texan who failed in the oil business and now operates a shrimp boat in the Gulf of Mexico." The bombshell doesn't even come until a short afterword, tacked onto the already completed manuscript at the last minute, complete with a "Deep Throat" within Bush's inner circle. (Said informant throws in an almost too perfectly worded attack on the governor's hypocrisy in vigorously fighting the war on drugs: "I've known George for several years and he has never accepted youth and irresponsibility as legitimate excuses for illegal behavior--except when it comes to himself.")

Bush has denied the allegations, however, and it seems that Hatfield has a few dark secrets in his past. Shortly after the publication of Fortunate Son, The Dallas Morning News reported that Hatfield was a paroled felon who had attempted to hire a hit man to kill his boss. The online magazine Salon went on to add that he may have lied about his history as a freelance journalist and invented a fictitious award for a previous book. Throw in the skepticism of many journalists at the afterword's heavy reliance on anonymous sources, and Hatfield's credibility is in serious jeopardy. For his part, the author maintains that the paroled felon is a different James H. Hatfield, born the same month and year and living in the same part of the country, and if public records say otherwise, he argues: "Doesn't it sound a little bit weird to you that all of a sudden, the guy that's accusing potentially the next president of the United States of having his record expunged, all of a sudden miraculously has a record himself in the state of Texas?" It should perhaps be noted that among Hatfield's previous books is an unauthorized guide to The X-Files.

                  4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly fair.......2007-06-06

I was impressed with the fact that this book reported positives as well as negatives. Although the forward was over the top, the actual book is pretty balanced and believable. A documentary about the author (who later committed suicide)quoted him as saying that Karl Rove was his major source. The fact that they managed to get this book not just taken off the market, but burned (!) shows the power of the machine that originally got Bush elected. Long may they stew.

4 out of 5 stars Read it but don't buy it.......2007-04-11

This book caused a big controversey when it was released. Neo-cons said it was a smear job, but strangely enough mainstream type liberals didn't over do it with their enthusiasm and Bush bashing when this came out. The original publisher ended up balking at releasing it. The author was smeared, attacked and after a while turned up dead under very shady circumstances. Knowing what I know about the Bush families history I expected a lot more because after reading this I was shocked at how LITTLE dirt there was on Bush in this. You really get nothing more than Bush was a mediocre student, he had a drinking problem for several years, he MIGHT have went awol from the National Guard and he MIGHT have done a lot coke. There was so much that was left out of this that I don't even know where to begin.

Overall this book is worth checking out from the library and reading but I wouldn't buy it. Webster Tarpleys book about Poppy Bush and American Dynasty by Kevin Phillips would be better choices if your researching the Bush crime family.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read .......2007-03-04

This Book is great, I am very much into politics and I find that this book kept me on the edge of my seat. The Amount of coruption that this family has is astonishing. To think that someone of George W. Bush's stature can be our leader leaves hope to just about anyone. In the book it explains that President Bush's Grandfather had connections to Nazi camps and I find that to be awful. The book is well written and contains some valuable information about President Bush. Read it for yourself You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Bare-knuckled Truth about Privilege.......2006-12-10

To my great surprise, this was not at all the "Bush bashing book" I expected and had been forewarned it would be. Hatfield is (was) a very mature professional, who carefully backed up all of his facts, and appeared to have no personal animus towards GW (as say a Molly Ivins does). He lets the facts fall where they may, and when they fell, we see a rather unflattering picture of our 43rd President.

I for one do not care whether the President used cocaine or abused alcohol at some point in his life. Nor do I care that Mr. Hatfield was an ex-con and drug addict. I do care whether the law treats him and the President the same as anyone else who commits a crime, and whether or not he (or the President) is a solid respectable human being willing to carry his weight as a private citizen and as a patriot.

As best we can tell, the evidence is that the jury is still out on this question about our President. There is a consensus among writers that the young Bush was headed down a path to self-destruction, one that would have undoubtedly consumed a less "fortunate son" -- especially if he had been one of color.

Now, it seems that GW is trying to "live down" his past, as we all have to do to some extent. But he squandered so much of his own personal and intellectual development during his hell raising years, that he has no resources left to draw on as President and thus has had to fall back heavily on his staff to rescue him. So now, he is "winging it," and it is excruciatingly painful to watch; and our nation is paying a heavy price for his "youthful indiscretions."

Hatfield's rendition of Bush's lacksidasical approach to life as a young man, foretold what he would be like as a president. In my view, this is one of the most important benefits and the greatest value of the book. And if one thinks about it, its prescience is in fact the best evidence of its solidity and honesty.

The subtexts of this book are many. One is that taking the shortcut down the path of privilege is no panacea even if you are white and privileged in racist America. For sure, privilege has many advantages, but it has some very distinct disadvantages too. As is the case in nations with monarchies, if you walk down the path of royalty, then you carry the responsibilities and expectations that go with being a royal.

Unlike his father, GW's flaws are all on display for everyone to see. He has nowhere to hide and Hatfield called his life just as it is being played out. Sorry Hatfield had to be "committed to suicide" for being honest in democratic America.

                  Five stars.

2 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every American of Voting Age.......2006-07-18

This book is one of the most important books I have read in my life-time. It is well researched and should be a text book for highschool Political Science courses in every public school. The author presents a fair, well-written factual account of the buying of the U.S. Government by a very wealthy, very well connected, and very powerful family.

How can we force democracy down the throats of other nations under the sword when we are not a Democracy?

                    Book Description

Every piece of land, no matter how remote or untrammeled, has a boundary. While sometimes boundary lines follow topographic or biological features, more often they follow the straight lines of political dictate and compromise. Administrative boundaries nearly always fragment a landscape, resulting in loss of species that must disperse or migrate across borders, increased likelihood of threats such as alien species or pollutants, and disruption of natural processes such as fire. Despite the importance and ubiquity of boundary issues, remarkably little has been written on the subject.

Stewardship Across Boundaries fills that gap in the literature, addressing the complex biological and socioeconomic impacts of both public and private land boundaries in the United States. With contributions from natural resource managers, historians, environmentalists, political scientists, and legal scholars, the book.

                  • develops a framework for understanding administrative boundaries and their effects on the land and on human behavior
                  • examines issues related to different types of boundaries - wilderness, commodity, recreation, private-public
                  • presents a series of case studies illustrating the efforts of those who have cooperated to promote stewardship across boundaries
                  • synthesizes the broad complexity of boundary-related issues and offers an integrated strategy for achieving regional stewardshi.

Stewardship Across Boundaries should spur open discussion among students, scientists, managers, and activists on this important topic. It demonstrates how legal, social, and ecological conditions interact in causing boundary impacts and why those factors must be integrated to improve land management. It also discusses research needs and will help facilitate critical thinking within the scientific community that could result in new strategies for managing boundaries and their impacts.

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting chapters but lacks overall unity.......2007-08-01

This edited volume addresses the problems of managing natural resources across boundaries of various sorts. It consists of two groups of chapters, one covering a variety of disciplinary approaches to the topic of conservation across boundaries, and the second discussing a variety of randomly-chosen substantive problems. Like many edited volumes, the whole is less than the sum of its parts, largely because the editors did not seek to impose a common framework on the contributions.

The first part tends to be more-or-less abstract discussions of each author's own disciplinary framework or theoretical hobbyhorse. For example, authors discuss the ecology, law, or politics of managing environmental problems across boundaries. The quality varies considerably depending on the author.

The second part consists of various topical chapters, on wilderness, recreation, private lands, and the Big Cypress National Preserve. One strength evident in this section, and echoed in some of the first group, is a focus on issues of private land management as well as public lands. This leads several chapters to examine the opportunities for public land managers to work with private landowners.

One weakness of the volume is an overly-expansive definition of boundaries. For example, stewardship problems might cross international or other government boundaries but most of the boundaries in this book are administrative (national park-national forest), demographic (city-outlying areas), or even cultural differences between different agencies. By stretching the notion of "boundary," it means everything and nothing. If the editors wanted to keep an expansive definition, then developing a more rigorous analytical framework and making clear distinctions among types of boundaries would be essential.

A common problem in almost all chapters is that many don't focus on the boundaries or the interactions between them. Some authors just wrote up a synopsis of whatever they usually write on, without tailoring their subject to the theme of the book. Not surprisingly, the several chapters coauthored by David Landres, one of the co-editors of the volume, do not suffer from this weakness, and do address the book's overall theme. A stronger editorial hand would have made for a more powerful book.
