From Pretend Priest to Renowned Spiritual Writer.......2004-11-07
This biography of Henri Nouwen, who died in 1996, personalizes the Dutch priest, who was one of the most popular spiritual writers of his time. We learn early in the story that he was an outgoing, charismatic man who wrote about prayer and spirituality as well as issues such as solitude and the divide between rich and poor, always expressing his ideas in terms of personal experience. We see Nouwen growing up in Holland and moving to the U.S., where he entered a doctoral program in psychology, which he finished, despite growing discomfort with certain theories but more with questions about his suitability for this arena. We witness his special devotion to the liturgy, which first surfaced when he was eight and constructed a miniature chapel in the family attic where he delivered sermons to family and friends and carefully reenacted the Eucharist. Finally we see him find a true home living among those with mental difficulties at l'Arche Toronto
Henri Nouwen is portrayed as a richly spiritual, extremely human individual whose life teaches us a great deal about living the gospel in modern times.
A Familiar Figure Rates a First-Rate Spiritual Biography.......2004-09-13
Michael O'Laughlin enjoyed a close professional assocation and personal relationship for two decades with popular Dutch priest and spiritual writer Henri J. M. Nouwen. His biography reveals an insider's perspective and emerges as a true "labor of love." Strong suits of this treatment include chapters on Henri and the Eucharist, the centrality of Jesus in Henri's spirituality and Henri and prayer. The biographical data in the opening chapter and the section that follows that assesses Henri's psychology in light of Myers-Briggs categories are enlightening and balanced. Overall, this work strikes me as one of the most outstanding secondary sources available that treats the Nouwen legacy. As one who knew Henri over the course of three decades, I can honestly say that I learned more about him from this book than any other biography, including Michael Ford's excellent recent treatment. Helpful footnotes complement the text. It's affordable, highly readable, and enthusiastically recommended. -- Reverend Gerald S. Twomey, Ph.D.

Dale Brown, himself a former air force captain, knows that a good techno-thriller succeeds by its careful blending of the hard realism of modern warfare with the fantasy of sci-fi's best alternative reality stories. In Battle Born, Brown takes pains to frame his reality with all the necessary details. He begins with an extensive, international cast list; three pages of contemporary excerpts from newspapers that address the instability of the Korean peninsula; and finally, an explosive battle simulation in the Nevada desert, rich with the techno-speak of modern warfare: "'Radar altimeter set AUTO, bug set to 830, radar altimeter override armed,' the copilot announced on the interphone. 'Both TFR channels set to one thousand hard ride. Wings full aft. Flight director set to NAV, pitch mode select switch to TERFLW, copilot.'"
As the novel unfolds, we learn of a people's revolt against the Communist leadership of North Korea. The South Koreans, already in possession of their first nuclear weapons after the failed kamikaze run of a North Korean pilot, take advantage of the weakness and destroy key tactical sites in the North, forcing a stunning surrender of the Communist leadership and the reunification of Korea. Now in possession of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, the once fractious Korean peninsula poses a serious threat to China, and the world seems poised for World War III. Enter USAF brigadier general Patrick McLanahan. As head of a new B-1B Lancer tactical strike unit based in Nevada, McLanahan and his men target and destroy enemy missiles. With their Top Gun dramatics, the Lancer unit seems the only safety between stability and global annihilation as Korea and China face off.
While all this seems a bit too fantastic and fast-paced at times, Brown's battle dialogue maintains a narrative intensity that keeps it all fun. He does seem to underestimate the impact (pun intended) of using nuclear weapons in warfare, though; the book is premised on a history that involves the Chinese having used them in strikes on Taiwan, and this new tale treats the subject with somewhat less gravity than might be imagined. That said, one can't help but return to those opening newspaper clips from time to time and wonder if the seeds of Brown's world are indeed contained in the ominous tea leaves of current events. --Patrick O'Kelley
Book Description
Patrick McLanahan is back — and this time he faces his most difficult challenge. He must pull together a team of aggressive, maverick young pilots to face a world on the brink of massive nuclear conflict.
It begins with a joint U.S.-Japanese-South Korean mock bombing raid. But the South Korean fighter pilots don't stick to the script. Instead, they race across the border into North Korea to support a massive people's revolt against the Communists.
Virtually overnight, the fledgling United Korea is the world's newest nuclear power, igniting a fuse that threatens to blow Asia apart and trigger World War III. Only McLanahan has the top-secret aviation technology and the brash young heroes to stop the coming inferno — if he can get them to stop fighting each other and start fighting as a team before the world is reduced to cinders!

Brown picks up on story threads from Fatal Terrain.......2007-10-01
Dale Brown returns to the world stage in Battle Born, picking up loose ends from his 1997 technothriller, Fatal Terrain. That novel began as China launched a small-scale nuclear assault on Taiwan after it declared full independence and sovereignty. At the same time, a nuclear explosion in Yokosuka Harbor outside Tokyo destroyed several American warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Independence. Although the Chinese were suspected, the actual culprit was never positively identified. When the United States tried to halt the PRC's attacks against Taiwan, the Chinese retaliated by launching a nuclear attack against U.S. military bases on Guam. A stunned U.S. struck back, effectively destroying both China's air force and its last remaining ICBMs, but afterward chose not to escalate the conflict.
Two years later, the U.S. is keeping a wary eye on the Chinese and trying to mend fences with nervous allies. Japan, for example, fearful of Chinese aggression, has closed down all U.S. military bases. Little does anyone know that another wild card is about to be played, this time by South Korea. A joint U.S.-Japanese-South Korean military exercise goes horribly awry when South Korean pilots race across the DMZ to support a massive people's revolt against the communists. To everyone's surprise, the bold initiative succeeds. Armed with weapons the Chinese provided to the North, the newly minted United Korea becomes the world's newest nuclear power. Ironically, its most likely target is China, who many fear will launch a preemptive strike on the fledgling nation.
Seeking to contain the situation, a shaken U.S. president turns to Generals Terrill Samson and Patrick McLanahan. Backed by technological marvels developed at Groom Lake (a top-secret military facility) and supported by a feisty group of fliers appropriated from the Nevada Air National Guard ("Battle Born" is Nevada's state motto), McLanahan once again enters the fray, this time trying desperately to avert the beginning of World War III. The odds are against him, but this doesn't phase McLanahan a bit -- he's made a career out of bucking the odds.
Obviously pitched toward technothriller fans (Tom Clancy fans will feel right at home here), Battle Born will satisfy general readers as well. For those who crave a charismatic hero, it stars Brown's long-running series character, Patrick McLanahan. For political junkies, it brims with domestic and international intrigue. There's hardware aplenty for techno geeks, air battles for avionics buffs, and plenty of thrills for action fans.
The book also has a serious side. Although Brown could have better depicted the human cost of the carnage (basically, all we get are numbers), he does a great job of casting light on the current global situation. McLanahan's volatile world differs from our own, but not by much. The Korean situation he depicts is especially plausible -- the conditions described in Battle Born are eerily close to those that exist in those troubled countries today. Hopefully, should events develop in our reality as they do in Battle Born, soldiers like Patrick McLanahan will step forward to save the day.
One of the best ones Dale Brown Wrote.......2006-04-17
This is a definate page turner. I like how it shows the plots with different countries' leaders point of view. Not a lot of flying like the previous books though. Still, as usual, Brown keeps a lot of Technical stuff in which might make it hard for new readers.
Techno-Thriller Too Technical.......2005-03-28
I read this book with the idea of using some of the information in it to improve my ability to write aerial combat scenarios for an online roleplaying game (NationStates) that I spend a lot of time playing. I chose this book at the bargain bin and decided to give reading the book a try.
Its good points are dialogue that often reflects the way you'd expect dialogue to go when it's a Cabinet meeting or it's between a lieutenant colonel who has to balance her double bill as a leader of one of her pilots and his secret love interest. Another strength of the book is on display once you get to the second half of the novel and you start getting into the drama itself.
However, the book falls short of exceptional by spending too much time on technical explanations that sound like they could be a real life Air Force military briefing. Does it add to the realism? Yes. But it also makes the first half of the book a dense read and a challenge to the civilian who has limited background in military thrillers. If I weren't so determined to finish this book, I probably would have given up within the first 100 of its 555 pages.
All in all, the book is decent to pretty good, but it's a far cry from being the engaging read it turned into during the second half of the book. As it ends up, it's a tweener that could have earned three stars if I were in the right mood to give them.
Did I read the same book as everyone else?.......2004-12-10
I hate to say it, but I found this book painfully SLOW. Yes, the plot moved along smartly, but not in a way that I cared about. The primary conflict doesn't arise until quite late in the book and our "heros", and I use the term loosley because I care not a whit about the charaters Mr. Brown created, see no real action until VERY late in the book. For my taste, he spent FAR too much time setting up the scenario and not enough time making me care about the characters. Tin Man, while admittedly hokey, at least saw the main character actively involved in fighting the bad guys from an early chapter. I struggled to finish Battle Born.
Armegeddon as Soap Opera.......2004-04-02
If you prefer your tales of blood and slaughter served up with plenty of jaw-jutting angst, this book is for you. Dale Brown is to be saluted for getting this into print. I wouldn't publish it. The heros are monodimensionally combative with everyone, even each other. There's plenty of bombastic machismo dialogue. Still, the audio version is great for washing dishes. You can miss whole chapters while vacuuming and still follow the plot. And we get to focus on radio-transimitting microchips while thousands fry as the tactical nuclear weapons fly. Doesn't get any better than this for dissassociated mayhem. But hey, I listened to all of it, didn't I?

Born for Battle.......2005-09-10
This is a magnificent life work. Practical, insightful, sobering, encouraging, masterpiece. 31 short chapters makes for an easy devotional too. HIghly recommended.
A highlighter's dream.......1999-03-16
Mathews deals with the subject of spiritual warfare from a front liner's viewpoint. He spent significant time on the mission field and learned tremendous spiritual lessons as he participated as a soldier in Christ's army. He shares these insights in short chapters which should be read more than once. Each lesson is relevant for today even though written in years past. Get ready to use your highlighter as you get new understanding on the believer's battle.
Very helpful intro to the reality of spiritual warfare.......1998-11-21
I read this book while I was serving as a missionary in Asia; my experiences paralleled those of the author and his insights helped me a great deal
Meditations on spiritual warfare and the power of Christ........1997-01-15
Mathews was an officer in the Indian Army during WW II, which accounts for his liberal use of a military vocabulary in these
brief and excellent studies.
As someone born for battle, Mathews is obsessed (in a good sense) with the absolute and unquestioned victory of Jesus Christ.
His insights, therefore, should boost the spirits of even the most down-trodden Christian.
The titles of a few of the meditations on spiritual warfare
and the power of Christ reveal his clear convictions: "The Soldier of the Cross" "The Soldier's Best Friend" "Our Wrestling"
"Rendering the enemy Powerless" "Lions' - Den Loyalty"
"Discipline Accepted . . . Mission Accomplished."
It's hard to imagine how these brisk, to-the-point, yet warm devotional thoughts could fail to stir up the reader.

Book Description
Born Fighting an Uphill Battle...
If you're a young African-American male today, you're more likely to grow up in a single-parent home, drop out of school, go to prison, or die from a gunshot wound than any other ethnic group in the United States. And if you're a good kid? You're likely to be perceived as stupid by your teachers, and people still are going to cross the street when they see you coming.
It's almost enough to make you give up. After all, what's the point?
Author Keith Horton has been there. And he's here to tell you there IS a point. So the odds are stacked against you. So what? Born Fighting an Uphill Battle is a realistic, no-holds-barred look at dealing with the challenges every young African-American male faces today--and at how to overcome those challenges. Keith offers hope and encouragement to the young men society has written off--and shows how they can become successful, happy, fulfilled African-American adults.
Customer Reviews:
There's Hope.......2007-03-13
Born Fighting an Uphill Battle holds no punches. Author Keith Horton tells it like it is. He informs us how a vast majority of young African American males are doomed to failure from the beginning of life. However, Keith does not just write about the problems, he also explains how to avoid them and resolve them. He writes in a way that the young "Hip Hop" generation can understand by using the same vernacular they use. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to rear a young African-American male.
There Is Hope For Today's Black Male.......2007-02-01
I had the pleasure of reviewing Mr. Horton's book prior to being published. I advise everyone to purchase this book; not only people of color - this is a clear illustration of the struggles the black male face on a daily basis. Nevertheless, Mr. Horton takes an additional step: he eloquently shows that there is hope for today's black male. I can't wait to receive my copies so I can share them with my son and nephews!!

Book Description
Are public officials morally justified in threatening violence, engaging in deception, or forcing citizens to act for their own good? Can individual officials be held morally accountable for the wrongs that governments commit? Dennis Thompson addresses these questions by developing a conception of political ethics that respects the demands of both morality and politics. He criticizes conventional conceptions for failing to appreciate the difference democracy makes, and for ascribing responsibility only to isolated leaders or to impersonal organizations. His book seeks to recapture the sense that men and women, acting for us and together with us in a democratic process, make the moral choices that govern our public life.
Thompson surveys ethical conflicts of public officials over a range of political issues, including nuclear deterrence, foreign intervention, undercover investigation, bureaucratic negligence, campaign finance, the privacy of officials, health care, welfare paternalism, drug and safety regulation, and social experimentation. He views these conflicts from the perspectives of many different kinds of public officials - elected and appointed executives at several levels of government, administrators, judges, legislators, governmental advisers, and even doctors, lawyers, social workers, and journalists whose professional roles often thrust them into public life.
In clarifying the ethical problems faced by officials, Thompson combines theoretical analysis with practical prescription, and begins to define a field of inquiry for which many have said there is a need but to which few have yet contributed. Philosophers, political scientists, policy analysts, sociologists, lawyers, and other professionals interested in ethics in government will gain insight from this book.

Book Description
The warm, witty anecdotal adventures of a world-renowned scientist, spanning thirty years and dozens of countries.
Most people only dream of having the life Daniel B. Botkin has led. He has studied whales and elephants, tramped over high mountain passes and through rain forests, worked with NASA, and spent substantial time walking in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark, and Henry David Thoreau. In Strange Encounters, Botkin does for the natural world what Richard Feynman did for physics and Oliver Sacks for human behavior.
Whether rebuilding an old mill in New Hampshire while ruminating on notions of "progress," researching the most weight-efficient high-protein food for space travel, or working in a radioactive forest on an early Cold War research project, Botkin experiences the kind of adventures that illuminate the complex and ever-changing relationship between human beings and their environment.
Customer Reviews:
More Refreshing Than Strange.......2005-02-16
There are a lot of really great books out there about natural history, but Botkin's approach is a little different. He includes anecdotes about New England water mills, and sounds a little like McKibben; then he crosses the continent to write about sea lions-now he sounds like Moore. He crosses the ocean to Africa in order to write about elephants, and one is reminded of Quammen's Natural Acts. Botkin is not copying the styles of other writers, he is simply exploring similar topics, but from a different perspective-that of an ecologist.
Through twenty-eight essays, and a poignant account of the ecology of his wife's battle with cancer, Botkin approaches each problem-whale hunting, sustainable salmon fisheries, forest management, endangered species, and more-with a completely open mind. He will not accept dogmatic explanations, and his inquisitiveness leads him on a life-long hunt to try to solve some-any-ecological problem. He writes in humorous tones of the slings and arrows of the idealist ecologist, and wonders how, as a forestry expert, he wound up with jobs trying to learn how long whales sleep (no one knew), or how much food an elephant ate (no one knew), or how many leaves are on a tree (no one knew). He despairs that he will ever make a positive contribution to ecology: "Ever the optimist, I had readily accepted the opportunity to work on the salmon issue. Perhaps this time I can really make a difference..." In each essay it appears as if his contribution is minor, until one takes in his body of work, over his long career, to discover that his contribution was actually enormous and invaluable.
The reader of natural history will enjoy Botkin's experiences and insights, but more importantly, those unfamiliar with ecology or natural history (reds, you know who I mean) will learn a great deal without feeling threatened.
a bit of a disappointment.......2004-02-08
As a long standing fan of Botkin's excellent DISCORDANT HARMONIES I looked forward to diving into this autobiographical account of this remarkable naturalist's career & thoughts. Alas, by about a third of the way through I found my attention drifting away & kept asking myself "Yeees... so what?" as essay piled on essay. Botkin has obviously done some really interesting things & has been to some odd and interesting places, but this book has far too much of the feel of satisfying a publisher's request of "why don't you root around in the attic & see if you can throw something together on sabbatical" & not enough of "so here's how my life informed my work & my work informed my life". I passed the book along to one of my best undergrads, and she said almost the same thing without prompting. Several essays seem to be heading for some sort of exciting peak, but then they sort of fizzle out & we are on to the next adventure without really understanding how to place what went before. This is too bad as I am confident that Botkin is capable of much much more. As an alternative, for folks interested in how the lives of ecologists affect their professional work I would suggest Dennis Chitty's excellent DO LEMMINGS COMMIT SUICIDE?
Ecological wit & wisdom.......2004-01-19
The book is an intriguing mixture of elements. On the one hand it describes the author's sometimes hilarious experiences as he seeks to answer such questions as "how long does a whale sleep," and "how much does an elephant eat." On the other hand he raises sobering questions about the capacity of the discipline of ecology to solve environmental problems. I enjoyed the book both for its human interest and for the author's reflections on the state of our understanding of nature.
A must read for students, scientists, and everyone else.......2003-11-05
Daniel Botkin's new book continues his string of must read books that provide a valuable perspective on the environment. His wealth of experience in field work and academic science is nicely complemented in this book through his reflections on a number of scientific issues with which he has engaged over his career. From the engineering of New England mills to studying ocean life, Botkin's reflections on his work will keep you engaged throughout the book and leave you looking for more. Whether you are an aspiring or practicing naturalist, or just looking for a good read, this book is a great choice.
Botkin scores again.......2003-10-20
A world-class ecologist, with a mind disciplined by the study of physics, recounts his experiences studying a wide-ranging array of environmental problems. With humor, incredulity and pathos he recounts examples of "ecological truth" which are based on untested assumptions. The recurring theme from beginning to end is: measure, measure, measure. This is a must read for students planning a career in science and young scientists just starting out. For this old forest ecologist, I hope the younger generation heeds the wisdom in this book.
