Book Description
A true, first-person account by the victim who survived the crimes committed by the rapist and killer made famous in the movie Dead Man Walking. Debbie Morris takes readers beyond the story of those crimes and into the journey of her faith as she wrestles with the question all of us face at some point in life: Is there any crime, any hurt, any person beyond the power of forgiveness?

Check out another.......2007-07-18
Along with this, Michael Varnado's "Victims of Dead Man Walking" gives excellent insight into the true story of the murders/rapists and their victims. Those crimes did not just affect the ones directly involved, but the entire community.
Moving but unsatisfying.......2006-05-09
This was written by, or on behalf of, Debbie Morris, one of the victims of Robert Willie, a death row inmate supported by Sister Helen Prejean, as recounted in her book Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account Of The Death Penalty In The United States. As such, I think anyone interested in Prejean's work will want to read it, and I recommend reading Michael Varnado's Victims of Dead Man Walking (also issued as Losing Faith) and Dead Family Walking: The Bourque Family Story of Dead Man Walking by D.D. Devinci for other points of view.
I read this book when it first came out, and I have pondered it for all the years since. As an account of enduring and surviving a grotesque crime, this is a very moving account. As a comment about dealing with such issues, I found it unsatisfying.
The first problem is the ambiguities of the relationship between Morris and Prejean. Let me say that I have considerable admiration for Prejean, certainly more than for most people on her side of the death issue. At least she doesn't dismiss the victims as irrelevant. This story is told as a memoir, so Morris attempts to recount her feelings at the time, which are not necessarily how she feels looking backward. Before she met Prejean, Morris tells us that she was extremely critical of her for accepting without question what Robert Willie told her. Her anger was quite justified. It wouldn't have been difficult for Prejean to find other accounts. But now that Morris and Prejean are such great friends, does this criticism still stand? Further, it becomes clear that Prejean has no qualms about lying through her teeth to further her claims. She said in her interviews prior to Willie's execution that he was remorseful, a changed man. Willie contradicted her in his own interviews. She admits to Morris that Willie wasn't, and probably wasn't capable of being remorseful. Neither she nor Morris seem to have dealt with this untruthfulness.
I am bewildered by Morris' remarks about forgiveness. Many people who write on the issue of forgiveness have the odd idea that if one hasn't forgiven someone, one thinks of them obsessively, eaten up with anger. I had a friend who was murdered; I certainly haven't forgiven the murderer. He received a sentence that satisfies my sense of justice and I have almost forgotten him. I often think lovingly of my friend, but the only time that I think of him is when someone brings up this forgiveness issue. One of the proponents of forgiveness insisted that I must have forgiven him in some sense, but I insisted that I am the arbiter of my own feelings - he is not forgiven one whit. Forgiveness can be just as active and require as much energy as anger.
I'm glad that Morris has learned to cope with what happened to her, but I don't understand it as forgiveness. If she had forgiven him before the trial, would she have refused to testify? If it doesn't affect the course of the law, then what does it mean? Salvation is between the individual soul and God, so that is no explanation either. These are familiar platitudes, which people throw out so unthinkingly, confident that they are self evident, that when they are challenged to explain, they often cannot.
Personally, I recommend Forgiving and Not Forgiving:: Why Sometimes It's Better Not to Forgive by Jeanne Safer as a nuanced look at anger and forgiveness.
Superb story from a teen abducted by two rapist-murderers.......2006-01-08
It's hard to find enough words of praise for this book. Two vicious killers escape from jail and chance on a 16-year-old Christian girl talking with her boyfriend in his car in a small town in Louisiana. The escaped prisoners abduct them at gunpoint and head for Florida. They shoot the boyfriend on the way and leave him for dead on a fire ants' nest. They keep the girl with them, and rape her whenever they feel like it. She finds out they raped and killed at least one other young woman before her.
Debbie Morris survived this terrible ordeal and her testimony put the abductors back in jail. Later she found that a nun had befriended the main killer, Robert Willie, and he was now becoming something of a celebrity, even while headed for the electric chair.
It would have been easy to produce a book that was full of bitterness at the legal system, at the world, and at God. But this book doesn't do that. It is gripping yet sensitive, informative yet reserved, and as forgiving as it is powerful. What I like most about it is that the writers (professional writer Gregg Lewis put it together for Debbie Morris) know exactly when to give details and when to restrain them. For example, many writers would play up the rapes for their sensationalism, but in this book Debbie Morris says "he raped me" and leaves it at that.
This is factual writing at its best. I found it hard to put the book down. And it moved me more than books usually do. I cannot find a thing wrong with it to give it less than a five-star rating.
1st hand truth.......2005-07-12
I remember this crime all too well. My cousin (Mark) was Debbie's boyfriend. I was only 9 at the time, but I remember the frantic phone call from my aunt and my dad joining other members of our family as they drove through town looking for Debbie and Mark. I will never forget overhearing the details of the wake of horror that Robert Willie left behind.
Debbie's book is full of courage, honor, and forgiveness. If should be in every victim assistance program and every victim of crime should read it. If you've read Dead Man Walking, you owe it to yourself to read this as well as Mike Varnado's book (he was the investigator who found Faith Hathaway's body). Helen Prejean cannot tell you about the "real" Robert Willie... only his survivor can.
To Forgive But Not Forget........2004-12-11
As a sixteen year old victim of rape, torture, and attempted murder by Robert Willie in Louisiana, Debbie Ceuvas survived the brutality this killer used to subdue her during the kidnapping. After fifteen years of remembering the nightmarish ordeal, she was able to overcome the trauma and start speaking out.
Her appearance on the t.v. show, 'Frontline,' to tell what really happened to her as opposed to Hollywood's version of 'Dead Man Walking' proved a pivotal point in her recovery. It served as a turning point whereby she was invited to speak at conferences where other participants had endured their own form of confinement and torture.
At the Cleveland, Ohio, conference in 1997, titled "Forgiveness in a Violent Society,' she shared the platform with Beirut hostage Terry Anderson. At seminars directed by Terry Hargrave, a therapist and psychology professor from Amarillo, Texas, she learned the steps to inner healing through forgiveness: insight, understanding, remorse, compensation for past hurts, through two areas, salvage and restoration.
Though she was never mentioned in the film, her testimony led to Willie's conviction. In FORGIVE AND FORGET by Lewis Smedes, she found the section, "Forgiving Monsters" relevant to her experience. Refusing to forgive meant submerging the pain, shame, and self-pity.
Forgiveness seems so hard and you wonder, "Is it really worth it?" She learned that by forgiving that human monster, she was able to trust again -- to experience the giving and receiving of love. She married Conner Morris and is now a mother.
She writes, "People often ask how I feel about the death penalty now?" Her response: "Justice didn't do a thing to heal me. Forgiveness did." I've always been opposed to the death penalty due to the fact that so many 'criminals' on death row are there through revenge and lies.
This is the previously untold other half of "Dead Man Walking,' the movie starring Sean Penn, which depicted the death row relationship he had with spiritual advisor, Helen Prejean, author of the book, DEAD MAN WALKING. Sister Helen, though she tried to save the life of a killer, admires Debbie's refreshing honesty as she dealt with the 'traumatic aftershock and the long, painful road to become whole again.' This true story of the young woman whose testimony sent Willie to the electric chair is one of courage, faith, and forgiveness.
This book is Debbie's "walk" on an incredible journey which was life-changing. THE DAILY VARIETY describes her as 'a woman who is Prejean's equal in strength and virtue.' We are asked to contemplate, "Is there any crime, any hurt, any person beyond the power of forgiveness."

Book Description
Ben Shahn (1898-1964) was at once a painter and photographer who claimed himself not to make a distinction between the two, though the critics and scholars have always given privilege to the paintings. Shahn preferred the hand-held 35mm Leica and an anglefinder (a device like a periscope that allowed him to photograph people without pointing his camera at them) to the cumbersome large-format cameras. He shot what he called the "living theatre"-the unconscious expression of working class and immigrant populations on NYC streets-and left a poignant record of the worst years of the Great Depression. The point this really good book makes is that, paintings aside, Shahn's photographs have strong impact and intrinsic value. Shahn's view of NYC ignores the skyscrapers and bridges that many of his contemporaries fixed on and gives us NYC at street level, eye level.

Where's Grant?.......2000-07-26
I found this book and was ready to purchase it when I realized there were no photos of Ulysses Grant in it. I couldn't believe it, so I checked the index. I was stunned. He is not even listed in the index! Can someone please explain to me what is going on here? Otherwise, the photos are amazing....
the story told thru its pictures.......2000-04-03
This two-volume work is the monumental collection of pictures of the american civil war. In total approx. 1800 pages shows us the soldiers from privates to generals and pictures from the battlefield, taken just a few hours after bitter fighting took place. The pictures also covers the citys and houses as well as other important place like rivers, harbours or mountains. The pictural record is accompaigned by text, written by important scholars. Originally six parts, the editors made two volumes of this work, which is highly recommended for any civil war buff, who wishes to see, what he's reading about.

Customer Reviews:
Quick but tiny book!.......2002-09-23
This book is huge, though it's roughly 6 inches in length making for very small print. It covers just about every subject in the Civil War chronologically though it isn't very detailed. There is simply too much covered in order for it to be that way but this book does feature everything-just quick. I seldom refer back to this book for information as anyone who seriously studies the Civil War will have other or better books on the subject.
Amazing photographs.......1999-09-06
Easily understood without confusing the subject or the reader. More than anything, as they say, every picture says a thousand words. This book almost needs no words as there are endless photographs each saying a thousand words of their own. I knew nothing of the cicil war. I now know much. A sad time but interesting subject.
Excellent compact photographic history of the Civil War.......1999-02-15
As an earlier reviewer stated, the Civil War was the first major conflict extensively covered by photographers. This first volume, which actually covers the conflict from secession to the climax at Gettysburg contains some of the best photograpy culled from the files of Matthew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and others. While the photographs alone would be worth the price, it is the accompanying text, written in the main by William C. Davis (with James M. McPherson and Shelby Foote arguably our finest Civil War historians) and Bell Wiley which captures the reader by tieing together the imagery with the fact. A picture is worth a thousand words, and the pre-war photographs of a timid-looking James Buchanan or the lean, mean look of the fireeating James Lane of Kansas are no exceptions. Or the dead Confederates laying near "Burnside's Bridge" following Antietam, or the bouyant beau sabeur Wade Hampton on one page and a youthful George Custer with his dog Rose on the next in the segment describing the cavalry fight at Gettysburg.
This compact work is thick, it is true, but a lot easier to carry along than the oversized volume. The only drawback to this and the companion volume is the small print of the text and captions. But this volume and its companion are well worth a magnifying glass and should be part of any Civil War buffs home library.
Essential for any Civil War library or collection........1998-06-20
I received this (and volume II "Vicksburg to Appomattox") as a gift from my wife. The articles are incisive, exploring events both leading up to and the during the actual conflict regularly ignored by other works. Although a magnifying device may be required for the text by some readers, the compact size of the two volumes makes them ideal "traveling books." (Ever try packing an oversized book in your suitcase or carry-on bag?)
But the PICTURES! The Civil War was the first major conflict to be photographed, and the photographs are what make these volumes essential for any serious study of the Civil War.
Please beware . . . the photographs are haunting, and some are downright disturbing. But the Civil War was just that -- a WAR in which men died in battle (and some died horribly). Over 50,000 casualties were inflicted in one major battle alone, and the pictures sans text tell the compelling story of the four years that literally defined us as a nation (and continues to define our nation in its present course in history).
Whether as gifts for others or for yourself -- BUY THESE BOOKS!
Book Description
Trace the legend, from its beginning to the final patrol. Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the top-scoring fighter ace of the First World War, remains practically without peer. In his short, but very glittering, career, this handsome, athletic, chivalrous, and gallant man had what is now called "star power," becoming an inspiration to fellow pilots and countrymen alike. His history unfolds here in generously annotated photographic biography, filled with 220 rare images that illuminate Richthofen's public and private lives. "...a distinguished historian of World War I aviation...offers...distinguished, illustrated coverage of...the legendary Red Baron. Making use of material, including photographs, from Richthofen family archives that were long sequestered by the Communists, Kilduff comprehensively summarizes Richthofen's career, mentors, comrades, aircraft, and opponents....a superior collection of graphic material concerning World War I aviation generally."--Booklist.

Hello from the world.......2001-02-15
Well, I expected more. What we have here is little more than a collection of photographs and captions. You REALLY must be a Richthofen buff to enjoy it fully. In all fairness, many of the photos are ones not usually seen and they do provide an insight into the life and times of a WWI ace.
As a history buff, but a not an authority on Richthofen, I was looking for a bit more on the man, his time and the unique character he represents.
Excellent book..........1999-10-23
An excellent book that allowed both the emotion and success of Richthofen's career to come through. The author correctly allowed the images to speak for themselves.
Extraordinary job!.......1999-10-12
This book is a gem. Peter Kilduff has done an extraordinary job in compiling a wide variety of contemporary photos of the men and machines that made up the brief life of Manfred von Richthofen. What can you say about a man who shot down 80 allied aircraft, killing 59 men, was himself shot down once, and then killed in combat at 25? It was a brief spectacular warrior's life and the photos give it all substance. The photos are given extensive captioning which makes for the narrative flow. It is almost like watching a documentary film. Something I found particularly interesting was the possibility that von Richthofen was shot in the head and almost killed by friendly fire as he was attacking an FE2. The observer of the 20 Squadron aircraft has long been credited with wounding the Red Baron, but Kilduff, using photos albeit briefly, makes a case for the wounding shot being fired from behind. Also missing is the usually drawn out argument of who actually killed von Richthofen, Captain Roy Brown or Australian ground gunners. Personally, I favour the ground fire theory. At any event, this is a great book well-presented and a worthy additon to the literature about the Red Baron.
Peter Kilduff has done it again, another superb MvR book.......1999-05-02
A wonderful addition to the von Richthofen files. Peter has done it one more time. Another wonderful book on Germany's greatest ace of the Great War. It is refreshing to read about the man and see many pictures which are completely new. Most MvR books hash and rehash how he died and who killed him. In my library, I have almost every book and article (good and bad) that have been published. Peter's other two books complete the most infomative, well researched and well documented history of a German hero who, until now was more myth than substance. Thanks to Peter's efforts, we now have substance of von Richthofen's short life. The histor of the Geat War is better for Peteer Kilduff's efforts.
Wonderfully illustrated and carefully researched........1999-03-21
A recent addition to my library, Peter Kilduff's newest offering on the life and times of Avations most legendary 'Ace' is already a gem and a great tool for historians and aviation enthusiasts. It was pains takingly researched and documented and every part of Manfred von Richthofen's life, his family and friends comes together in word and photo. Many of the photos have never been published before, making this book a unique and highly useful research tool. Mr. Kilduff obviously has a great respect for the subject and his objectivity is admirable. The Illustrated Red Baron is a remarkable historical document of German aviation through the camera lens and eyes of Germanys foremost fighter pilot of the Great War. The reader discovering the intricacies of a heroes rise to fame, war and the making of a legend and military genius.

A solid methods book.......2007-04-28
I bought this book for a research methods class that I am taking for my Masters in Public Administration program. When the class started, the professor had us switch to another textbook, but I read this book because I had already paid for it and I knew that it would help me with the class. The material was easy to work with and was presented in a logical sequence.
A Tough Subject Clearly Explained.......2005-09-22
I'm a Junior at a large university, and this book is required for my Research Methods class. I've put off taking this class until now, since I'm not very math-oriented. This book explains research ideas in a very simple way, and each chapter has lots of examples from politics. My professor sometimes also has us read the sample articles that the chapters list. This is extra work, but seeing how real researchers use a method helps me understand it. By the way, there is math in the statistics section, but it's not really that bad. If you're not a natural whiz at research, this is the book for you.
Don't waste your gray matter!.......2003-08-26
This book talks down to the student. It is elementary to the extent of being obvious. The field has moved on and so should we. Get the King, Keohane and Verba book instead, which is written lucidly and actually isnpires thought.
A Solid and Accessible Textbook on Methodology.......2001-02-25
The book is clearly written, and I am using it this semester for an undergraduate class I teach. I am not a big fan of textbooks in general, as I rarely use them myself, and when I do, it is mostly for concrete and breif reference purposes. This book is very accessible. I especially liked the chapter on focus groups. The chapter on content analysis is also good, because it conveys very clearly the problems that one faces with this particular method, but at the same time the chapter is not mathematically deep. I find that most of my studnets find this book easy to use. As a book on statistics, it is not very powerful, and the presentation of even the basic methods could use better organization. But overall, this is still a useful text.
Not worth $85.00.......2000-07-31
I'm using this book for my undergrad political science class on research design and statistical analysis. I have previously used Johnson and Joslyn's book, which is much less expensive than Manheim and Rich. If I had known that the bookstore would charge the students so much, I would not have assigned it. The authors do a good job with research design, but the statistical section is poorly organized, and has at least one formula incorrect. If you are looking for a good book on empirical political analysis, you could probably find a better research design book and a better statistics book for about the same price.
Book Description
At present much of political science consists of a large body of formal theoretical work that remains largely unexplored empirically and an expanding use of sophisticated statistical techniques. While there are examples of noteworthy efforts to bridge the gap between these, there is still a need for much more cooperative work between formal theorists and empirical researchers in the discipline. This book explores how empirical analysis has, can, and should be used to evaluate formal models in political science. These developments, if combined, are potentially a basis for a new revolution in political science.

This is a classic advanced undergraduate/graduate text in research methods which requires statistics as a prerequisite. The first half of the text concentrates on research methods and the second half introduces students to advanced statistical procedures.

The best of the best.......2007-09-07
This Rosenthal & Rosnow book is destined to be a classic (the 2nd ed. already is). Rarely will you encounter this level of philosophical breadth, statistical depth, and historical perspective so well unified in a single text in any field. And all of it is as clear as a glass of gin in the sun. I keep mine close by my desk and refer to it often.
The next generation of behavioral science students will be lucky to start with this one and have it as a lifelong reference.
E. K. Foster, PhD
Clear and Comprehensive.......2006-11-20
This book is a must-have for those in the behavioral sciences. We used it as a textbook in my psychology MA course, and even years later my classmates and I keep it within arm's reach on our bookshelves and refer to it as "Bob's red book".
Don't waste your money on this.......2004-01-03
My background in statistics was not very helpful to understand this awfully soporific, pedantic book : it inflicts on you hundreds of references pages after pages. Not a single chapter is ended with exercises. To my misfortune I had it as a mandatory textbook in an Information System course at NJIT -- imposed by an unscrupulous "distinguished professor", whose background is sociology, as a favor to the authors, apparently.
Excellent and comprehensive text.......2001-11-25
This is one of the most comprehensive and clearly written textbooks for graduate level behavior science methods I have come across. I learned from this book myself and, now as a professor, I will be using it in my graduate class.
The Grand Daddy of Methods Books.......2000-01-06
This is the one that you'll keep after the class is over. You'll come across some odd methodological issue 5 years after you buy the book and it'll be in there, explained perfectly. The section on interpretation of interactions is particularly great. You can't learn more about power and meta-analysis more efficiently than by reading the relevant chapters in here. The ethics chapter is more entertaining than anything like it in any other text. I've been teaching from this book for 9 years and still get students calling saying thanks for making them buy it.
Book Description
This comprehensive research methods text introduces students, both concretely and theoretically, to a wide variety of techniques, applications, and concerns that are important to political science research.
Organized around the various stages of the research process, and balancing the competing demands placed on an introductory text, each chapter of the book is planned around a series of substantive questions and enhanced with a series of research exercises that give students practical insights into the important issues raised.

Book Description
Biological invasions are a global problem whose local impact can be of great magnitude. The prevention and minimization of the impact of invasive alien species has become a priority because of their negative impact on biodiversity, economy and public health.
Effective responses are needed; cooperation and coordination among countries and/or different sectors of society are a must. To combine and share experiences on biological invasions at international, regional and local level it is essential to develop compatible approaches to common problems.
With this aim, the GEI (Grupo Especies Invasoras) organised the First National Conference on Invasive Alien Species in Spain in 2003. Scientists coming from different parts of the Iberian Peninsula belonging to universities, public administration, NGOs and environmental enterprises and world-renowned experts on biological invasions from other countries responded to this "call for action" and participated in the conference.
Issues in Bioinvasion Science contains key contributions of this conference. The themes included cut across different aspects of non-native species invasions. This volume is essential reading for anyone seeking an understanding of non-native species invasions.
Our aim: to go beyond national boundaries in order to tackle these complex biological issues.
