5 out of 5 stars Great Gift Book!!!.......2004-02-18

I was given this book as a gift and just fell in love with it. I now keep several copies on hand to give as gifts. Its easy to read and full of depth! Any mother would enjoy reading it... young or old! It inspires you to be a better Mom and wife. What I love about books like this, is that you fall in love with the family. You get to know all the kids and the mother and father. By the end of the book, you don't want the family to go.

5 out of 5 stars Mama & God.......2002-01-01

This is the story of an immigrant family in the early 1900s. Many times were hard but the family's faith in God brought them through. This is a very easy to read book with stories that put the reader in the setting. The stories, although enlightening about living in that time period, also serve the purpose of building one's faith by seeing how Mama believed God's promises and helped all her children to believe them too. This book is a pleasure to read & the reader will feel better after having read it.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Biblically based role model for wives.......2001-06-14

I was surprised by how attractive biblical marriage is portrayed within the pages of this encouraging little book. This is not about how to have a happy marriage/family life when both partners are 'wonderful'. This is the life-story of a woman who applied God's truths to her life and trusted in the Lord for the outcome. Her husband didn't suddenly turn into the romantic white knight she may have dreamed about in her youth, but she loved and respected him, even regarding his differences. She walked the walk, sacrificing many things to the Lord, and found that the secret to a happy life was a thankful heart. There just aren't very many Christian books out there that unabashedly take God's word as it is written. So many water it down with situational ethics...this one does not, but what an encouraging and riveting biography for us to follow.

This book is the best faith builder I've read in a long time. "Mama's" frequent reminders of God's faithfulness are real and convicting. Mrs. Jensen is a marvelous storyteller.

This book has been severely under-rated. Its a truly excellent reference tool. Very few works have information about something as little known as the Korean turtle ship and its battles against an invading Japanese fleet in the 1400's. Yes, the 1400's. It needs to be updated, and re-released.

                  Book Description

Federal courts are not allowed to intervene in a legal dispute indiscriminately. This authoritative text lays out the constitutional source of federal authority and the limits to its application, focusing on federal questions and diversity. Jurisdictional problems and jurisdictional amount are discussed, as well as admiralty, sovereign immunity, abstention, injunctions against suit, and civil rights removal. Also includes coverage of three-judge courts, trial location, and the law applicable in federal courts.

4 out of 5 stars one helpful commercial outline.......2007-06-01

I'm not a big commercial outline user--I only used them in two classes during law school--Civil Procedure (Examples and Explanations) and Federal Courts. My professor was an old U. Chi. grad, and had Currie for Federal Courts when he was in law school, so he liked this book and it tracked our class discussions pretty well. Currie's writing is clear, and TO THE POINT. That's one thing I liked best about this one. I would recommend it over Chemerinsky's Federal Jurisdiction, which I also looked at. Federal Jurisdiction has more detail (in terms of particular case discussion) but I didn't think it had much more substance (at least what law students need and can comprehend) than Currie's Nutshell. This is one I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Essential to a Proper Understanding of Federalism.......2004-03-16

This book is an excellent mini-treatise on constitutional federalism, written by one of the finest federalism scholars in the legal academy. It discusses federalism's main themes and issues, and does so in a clear, cogent, and concise manner.

All too often, laymen and lawyers alike wrongly refer to federalism as a synonym for "states' rights." Some think it simply a tool in the "conservative" constitutional scholar's arsenal. This reviewer is an attorney who was once a student of Professor David Engdahl, and I can assure you that neither he nor his scholarship supports either of those erroneous notions. Those who have respect for complexity and nuance will have much to appreciate here.

Nonetheless, Engdahl rejects the notion of "process federalism," a dubious notion that really isn't federalism at all. He provides a clear overview of the concept of enumerated powers, discussing what is actually meant by the word "powers" in this sense, and also how those powers extend in legislation. His discussion of the Necessary and Proper Clause is as sophisticated as any in the legal academy. Likewise, his understanding of the Commerce Clause is much more logical and textually supportable than those exhibited by any of the justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. Engdahl is also an expert on interstate compacts and federal borrowing and spending powers, giving readers of this work with some impressive scholarship in these areas. He also provides a much better approach to the commandeering immunity concept, as grounded in the Necessary and Proper Clause (rather than the 10th Amendment), and rightly identifies the Ex Parte Young doctrine (a part of 11th Amendment jurisprudence) as a "silly fiction."

As noted, this book is written in the form of a small treatise, so it is not something a layperson would pick up and as easily understand. Furthermore, this edition was printed in 1987, and there have been many developments since that time, largely in the guise of the "New Federalism" spawned by U.S. v. Lopez (1995) and recent jurisprudence in the area of state sovereign immunity. (This reviewer recommends Dr. Michael Greve's "Real Federalism" for a discussion of more recent federalism jurisprudence.) None of the more recent developments detract from what is contained in this book, however. This small treatise provides the law students and legal scholars with clear and well-reasoned analysis of the principles of federalism and Supreme Court jurisprudence in that area. It is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good Review of Subject Matter. Clear and Concise........2007-08-22

This book provides a very good overview of the federal law of employment discrimination. While not incredibly detailed about every statute, this book gives you the bread and butter of what you need to know about each of the statues you would study.

Good for a quick review of the subject to go along with your casebook.

4 out of 5 stars For the Discriminating Only.......2006-08-23

I'm a training specialist by trade, and I have taught Sexual Harassment Prevention and Equal Employment Opportunity classes for many years. This book allowed me to appear as a subject matter expert because I was able to offer more depth in specific cases and topics. If you're discriminating about your sources, I know you will buy this.

                    4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2006-04-26

I read this book in order to survive a law class. I also used it when I had an interview with the Office of Civil Rights. This book may feel cursory but it covers a large array of material. For those who are constantly suspicious about facing discrimination in the workplace, it may be especially enlightening. Though I gave my copy to a friend not involved in the law, I do worry about it being misused by laypeople. For example, you could be blatantly discriminated against, and this book may point to cases that reflect your own situation. However, if you missed a statute of limitations or your employer doesn't have a sizeable number of workers, etc., your case may be a loser. Still, filing with local anti-discrimination office is supposed to be free and of no prejudice to the worker. Since this summarizes the everyday law, it is not a cute, easy read. But it is useful.

The text provides the scope and highlights you need to excel in understanding this field. This will enable you to answer exam questions more quickly and accurately, and enhance your skills as an attorney.

                            Book Description

What public officials failed to say about post-9/11 New York air.

I am glad to reassure the people of New York...that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink.—Christie Todd Whitman, Administrator of the EPA, September 18, 2002

Officials knew that their own preliminary environmental tests of the air, dust, and water in lower Manhattan...found considerable amounts of asbestos and heavy metals.—from Fallout

On the strength of reassurances from Christie Todd Whitman and Mayor Giuliani that it was safe to do so, thousands of Lower Manhattan residents moved back to their apartments within weeks of September 11, kids returned to local schools, office staff resumed work. There was just one problem: those reassurances were not based in fact.

A source of controversy and embarrassment when it first appeared in hardcover, investigative reporter Juan González's damning indictment of the Giuliani administration and EPA shows that, in their rush to get the city—and Wall Street in particular—back to work, the mayor and Whitman put tens of thousands of downtown residents and workers at risk.

Initially dismissed as alarmist, Fallout has since been corroborated by reports in The National news media documenting the long-term health implications of an enormous failure of leadership.

Juan Gonzalez was the first journalist to grasp the impact of the environmental disaster of 9/11. His article on October 26, 2001 said what some of us already sensed: Contrary to the 'good news' being sold like sugarcoated poison by government officials who wanted Wall Street back up and running, the air was dense with astronomical levels of asbestos, lead, dioxin, mercury and hundreds of unpronouncable contaminants including some that had never previously existed.

Fallout is in this tradition of groundbreaking journalism.

Unfortunately Gonzalez is so ahead of the pack that when I showed his article to my son and exhusband, whom I was trying to convince that our son should not remain at Stuyvesant High School, four blocks north of the World Trade Center, they dismissed it as a red herring.

Fallout is a compelling account of this environmental disaster which may ultimately claim more lives than the attacks themselves.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read If You or A Loved One worked at Ground Zero.......2003-07-10

Finally someone has the guts to print the truth about the toxic air at Ground Zero. For those of us who were there and who are experiencing the medical consequences of having been exposed to these toxic chemicals, Gonzalez's book explains in understandable language why we are sick and what we are likely to experience in the future. Americans need to know the truth, especially the thousands of men and women from around the country who volunteered their time at Ground Zero and are likely to suffer the medical consequences of having done so, either now or in the future. Fallout is a must read for all Americans.

4 out of 5 stars Where Is This Story In The Media?.......2002-11-30

This is an extremely disturbing book. Perhaps because along with the well-documented facts concerning the unprecedented toxic environmental fallout from 9/11, it is the shocking realization that it's not just the NYC and federal goverment cover-up of this story -- it is the citizens themselves collectively turning away from the horrible reality of this disaster.

The national media has not pursued the obvious leads -- the common sense questions -- but Mr. Gonzales has. And the logical conclusion of this story, in the not-too-distant future, is a public health nightmare that will have the media self-righteously condeming Giuliani and Whitman in hindsight as bearing responsibility for perhaps thousands more deaths.

The story from 9/11 that the media immediately created was of the heroes and victims. We remember them, and try to forget the horror of the collapsing towers. But if we are a truely a courageous nation, we will look clearly and not turn away from the terrible reality that ground zero represents. That is what I think this book is really about -- there are facts and consequences of 9/11 that have not yet been dealt with. And closing our eyes and wishing them away simply won't work.

Americans are being deceived. In this stunning piece of investigative reporting which should be awarded a Pulitzer Prize, Juan Gonzalez reveals the horrible truths about the environmental impacts of the 9-11 disaster. Asbestos abounded. The many heroes who helped to clean and console may face excruciating deaths thanks to suppressed and inaccurate information.

Our sacred institutions are rotten. Every American citizen should read this brief but incendiary work which speaks truth to power unflinchingly. If we do not quickly institute major changes which make our leaders and representatives truly responsible for telling the truth to the American public, however unpleasant, we may be facing the end of American democracy as we have known it and believed in it.

Where are the Thomas Paines and Thomas Jeffersons of the twenty-first century? We desperately need your voices and leadership!

5 out of 5 stars The FBI Failed Us Before 9/11; The EPA Failed Us Afterwards.......2002-06-26

I live 5 blocks north of Ground Zero and have attended hearings and forums and read hundreds of articles, studies memos and reports about the post 9/11 environmental issues in Lower Manhattan. But my jaw dropped when I read Juan Gonzalez' book - here are the missing pieces, the things I'd heard but was never able to find in print - and lots of insider information that only someone as dedicated to this story as he was could have. It is a clear, readable summary of the case against the EPA, OSHA, NYC DEP - and, de facto, an indictment of all those newspapers whose reportage consistently minimized the issue. Not since the Vietnam War has there been so much media "disinformation."

If you live or work in lower Manhattan and/or have any interest in the true story of how our government knowingly and intentionally jepordized the lives and health of the rescue workers, residents and workers downtown after 9/11 while ensuring that their own health was well protected, this book is a "must read."

Juan Gonzalez is to be commended for his courage in bucking his editors to continue to cover this story.
