Book Description

The sudden and tragic death of Princess Diana caused the world to reflect on how much this singular woman meant to us all. This new edition of her life story -- which includes Diana's personal recollections in her own words, as well as an account of the events surrounding her death -- poignantly strengthens her hold on our hearts.

From her fairy-tale wedding and the births of her two wonderful boys to the stunning collapse of her marriage, Diana's luminous but troubled life transfixed millions. Despite enduring heartbreak, illness, and depression, she never wavered in her commitment to the less fortunate, or in her determination to make a better life for herself and her sons. This revealing book is the closest we will ever come to her autobiography -- a lasting and powerful testament to her courage and spirit.

Diana: Her True Story was originally published in 1992 under the guise of a quasi-authorized biography, with mostly unnamed courtiers and royalty as the accredited sources. It instantly became a sizzling, international bestseller that lanced the boil of Windsor family dysfunction, triggering a chain of events that led to Charles and Diana's divorce. After her tragic death in 1997, Andrew Morton revealed that Diana herself had not only been the main source for the book, but had also edited his original drafts for accuracy. In return for this gold mine of information, Diana wanted complete anonymity for fear of retaliation from the queen. Her True Story in Her Own Words is enhanced by more than 75 full-color photographs of the princess, from her childhood in Althorp to her marriage to Charles at Westminster Abbey to her humanitarian efforts, and finally to her unforgettable funeral service. However, the most poignant portrayal of the princess emerges from the unedited transcriptions of Diana's interviews with Morton: "I think I'm going to cut a very different path from everyone else. I'm going to break away from this setup and go and help the man on the street."

4 out of 5 stars My Review on Diana: Her True Story.......2006-12-12

I sort of liked this book more than some of the other biographies I've read before. To be honest before I read this book I have NEVER heard of Princess Diana. While I read this book I felt sympathetic toward her because she had a real hard life after she became involved with the Prince Charles. Most of the sympathy went into the fact that she received pretty much no help from any one except her mother and father but no help whatsoever from the royal family and was expected to know everything she was supposed to. She had bulimia and no experience at all at being royalty and the somewhat rude expectations from the royal position and the responsibilities that came with it. Not only that but the prince that proposed to Diana (the prince that became her husband) was cheating on her with another woman and everyone was trying to hide the fact that he was seeing the other woman. Along with that problem came the fact that her husband cared more about the other woman than Diane even though she was his wife. An example was that when Diana was still engaged to the prince and the paparazzi were following her and the other woman the prince was seeing, Diana was being followed by like 36 paparazzi the other woman was only being followed by 4 people the prince was sympathetic towards the other woman and didn't even care about the hardships Diana was going through.
So overall I would give the book a good rating since it had a personal interview with Diana and used her own words rather than some facts that could very well be just rumors that were spread.

5 out of 5 stars Diana "The Queen Of Hearts".......2006-11-21

Saint Therese of Lisieux, The Little Flower wrote that she had prayed to discover her true vocation - and that she had found it: "to be love in the heart of the Church"! A novel by Carson McCullers wears the title: "The Heart is A Lonely Hunter". "The heart" is the location of the reality of our life . . .it is where we really dwell . . . and where God dwells with us.

Princess Diana Spencer was indeed a "lonely hunter" searching for herself and for meaning "in her heart" . . . and she found that meaning in the hearts of countless millions throughout the world -- many who encountered her personally and countless millions who never physically met her but DID meet her soul.

Diana's external beauty simply was a radiation outward and visibly of her real true inner beauty - Melanie (Safka) the folk singer wrote a song titled, "Beautiful People", and while Melanie hadn't envisioned "Diana" who probably had just been born about the time she recorded that song, Diana WAS a "beatiful person".

This book by Andrew Morton comes about as close as we might ever come to hearing the voice of Diana speaking for herself. She presents herself to us as she was: frailties included - but "the flaws" are what mark individuals as unique and as the amazing persons that they are - and the faults simply lend contrast to their perfections and more noble character.

The world cried when Diana died . . . and she left us wondrous memories of a "Camelot" that did exist if but for a fleeting moment . . . and she left us an example of how "love" can exist in the heart of the worldfor any other person in need, whatever their need or hurt and wherever they may live. She was a friend of Mother Terese and Mother Terese was a friend to Diana (Diana was buried with rosaries Mother Teresa gave her) - they lived in two different atmospheres but shared that sense of "human pain".

This volume lets Diana linger with us a while longer . . . and the photographs bring her back once again and remind us of why we all fell under her spell.

And beneath the surface of her image . . . between the lines of her words, we can also find hints as to how we can live a more compassionate and understanding and caring life of "love" ourselves.

Diana is missed . . . and she should be . . . but the world was blessed that she walked among us even for so brief a time. Her smile is now eternal.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD READ BUT NOT ENTIRELY TRUTHFUL.......2004-12-02

I first read this book when it came out in 1992. Like everyone else, I was shocked and blamed Prince Charles for the marriage falling apart.

Since she died, there's been a number of credible stories come out that shows Diana to be manipulative, emotionally immature, stubborn and just plain bizarre. While her devotion to her children is unquestionable, and her charity work obviously came right from her heart, there were too many other aspects of her character that were not so glossy.

I mean come on, if your wife was pregnant and threw herself down the stairs to get your attention, would you not seriously question her mental stability? Anyone who can cut themselves with a lemon peeler or smash themselves against a glass cabinet is obviously a few bricks short of a load and in serious need of help. When she did the Panorama interview in 1995, she declared that she felt "betrayed" when her former lover James Hewitt did a tell-all book.............uh, well didn't she do the exact same thing to her husband when she told Andrew Morton all the dirty details of their marriage?

While I despised Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles for their affair, I understand now (a decade later) why he would turn to her: for some NORMALCY in his life.

Be that as it may, the one fasinating thing about Diana is her uncanny ability to predict things. In this book, it tells of her conversations when she was young that she was going to marry someone "in the public eye". She also apparently predicted her father's stroke in 1975. But what was fasinating to read in 1992 was Diana's belief that "while she knows that William will one day be King, she is firm in her belief that she will never become Queen" and "I am performing my duty as Princess of Wales, but I can't see it for much longer than 15 years." As we all know, she was Princess of Wales for 16 years. She made these statements 6 years before she died.....

1 out of 5 stars Spin, from the Mistress thereof.......2004-11-17

Andrew Morton's book, written in collusion with the late Diana, is a well-written, cleverly confected polemic designed to undo the very people who made her what she was (or, as some in the UK were wont to say, "After all, she's just a royal by injection"). Purportedly the daughter of a famous alcoholic (Lord Spencer), she exhibited all the classic symptoms of an adult child of an alcoholic; low self-esteem, poor boundaries, poor impulse control, chronic depression, a pattern of blaming others for her problems, etc. Of course, one can add on bulemia (from which she suffered before she married her poor husband), and other deep-seated psychiatric disorders. All this is clearly shown in the book to any critical reader. My daughter's godmother, the late Ouida Huxley, used to regale us with stories told her by one of the Queen's closest confidants, who herself witnessed how during the height of her omnipotence Diana would disparage her husband to his face, in front of the family, on his lack of charisma compared to her. She pulled cute pranks like screaming and rolling about on the floor when she didn't get what she wanted (in this particular case, to go to Majorca instead of Balmoral) in a fine impression of a grand mal epileptic seizure, in front of the Queen at a family meeting. For some reason (and it wasn't Camilla, who re-entered the scene only after all efforts at marital repair were exhausted), Diana felt as if the ungrateful royals needed to be paid back for her psychic pain, not realizing that the source of her suffering was in her own head. Andrew Morton's book is the result. It's as one-sided as an autobiography by a narcissist. Morton was either duped, or a willing collaborator in the tearing down of Britain's primary civic institution, the Monarchy. This work (if such it may be called) is about as accurate as Soviet propaganda. It is a fantasy woven from scraps of truth. If Diana had lived, and married the dreadful Dodie Fayed, she would have lost her titular "Princess" title, and reverted to merely the (alleged) daughter of an earl, and would have once again been "Lady Di". Dodie's dad was planning to lugubriously install the two love-birds in the Windsors' old place in the Bois de Boulogne. Eventually, no doubt, she would have tried out one of her famous emotionally wracking "turns" on Dodie (an Egyptian man, mind you) and would have infallibly been kicked out on her coutured posterior. During that time anyone who knew her, even from a distance, could see that Diana's life was on an inexorable and endless downward cycle (remember, even her brother, who so "courageously" dissed his own godmother, the Queen, on international television, refused to have Christmas dinner with D the last year of her life). Andrew Morton's book is a classic celebrity bio. Poor Diana. She was never happy, she would never be happy, and she was going to sow chaos and destruction wherever she went. Death, however, mercifully came for Diana before her life got even worse.

3 out of 5 stars The SAS effort in Bosnia, more thoughts then action........2003-08-27

Spence travels to Bosnia as part of the SAS effort in the war torn area. He explains in detail their particular mission and its very interesting to see what these guys actually did over there. We don't hear much about the things these guys so we don't give them the respect and honour they deserve. All Brits know about the SAS but we don't know what they do everyday to protect us and people around the world. Spence gives us a taste of a typical SAS mission outside of the Middle East.

I found this book to be very detailed, an insight into the emotions and humour of the SAS. Its lacking in the action department so hardcore action fans will get a little tired after a while. What action parts it does have are superbly detailed and thorough in giving the reader a good understanding of the events.

The book gives a good interpretation of the SAS missions over in Bosnia, not the whole UN effort; it's a good educational read from that aspect.

Spence writes how its impossible not to become emotionally attached to the situation in Bosnia, you can't maintain your moral objectivity while serving there and he gives a good account of why.

I highly recommend Spence as an author if not for the action just for the insight into the SAS he provides.

3 stars (in comparison to his other book its not as good but his writing style deserves a 4.5 star rating)

3 out of 5 stars Good account of Baltic trouble.......2002-11-09

This is the only book about covert ops in the former yugoslavia that I have read. It is fast paced and very descriptive. For other great reads on the SAS try Andy McNab and Chris Ryan.

3 out of 5 stars More Background Needed.......2002-04-06

The author does a good job of describing the British effort. I would have liked a more detailed review of the political and social situation that brought the country into the civil war. I also think more could have been done to develop the overall desperate state that the whole country fell into. I would look at this book as a good start to finding out more about the conflict but not the only book one would want to read.

        5 out of 5 stars A fascinating read.......2001-07-26

Spence gives a good account of the hazards of peacekeeping and the horrors of civil war.

4 out of 5 stars You can feel the realistic thrill - very interesting.......2000-03-25

If you liked his first book (Sabre Squadron) you love this one. As a soldier who also served in bosnia only 1 1/2 years later, this is a very good review of the situation. You can imagine, what`s going on in kosovo. A very good book an guidance, not only for soldiers. For all who love action, thrill and realistic stories. See and feel what it mean to be a soldier at the frontier to hell - for peace and himanity.

                Book Description

Hillary's Secret War is the true story of how a group of renegade journalists fought to expose America's darkest scandals through the Internet-and how the most powerful woman in the world tried to stop them.

From her own "war room" in the White House, Hillary Clinton commanded a secret police operation dedicated to silencing dissent, muzzling media critics, intimidating political foes, whitewashing Clinton scandals, and obstructing justice. Hillary's operatives infiltrated every level of the news media, federal law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and the federal court system.

They looked upon the "unregulated" datastream of cyberspace as a threat to their power, potentially devastating in its ability to bypass the controlled, corporate media. For that reason, Hillary's secret police persecuted Internet dissidents with special ferocity.

Mainstream news media spiked the story of Hillary's secret war-and of the scandals she sought to conceal. But the courageous new journalists of the Internet underground defied the odds and exposed the shocking truth about history's most corrupt presidency. This is their story.

Written with all the drama and tension of a gripping novel, this carefully researched book gives the inside story of how these modern-day patriots endured Hillary's attacks, and emerged from the battlefield to become a sprawling, innovative news source reaching tens of millions each day. Hillary's Secret War presents a tale of dogged courage and sacrifice, one of the greatest untold stories in the annals of journalism.

"Hillary's Shadow Team," says Poe, "will no doubt play a crucial role in smoothing the way for her planned return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Likewise, the Internet will figure prominently in the effort to stop her."

                1 out of 5 stars Another good-right-bad-left propaganda book.......2007-09-15

What we have here is an apparently hard-hitting, gloves-off book that exposes the depths of the corruption of Bill and Hillary Clinton. It's real purpose, though, is to preach to the choir of those who already dislike the Clintons intensely, while cleverly covering up the deeper, broader corruption that envelopes both major political parties and all the nation's major opinion molders. The proof of the pudding is in the following long passage in the book describing how Kenneth Starr's "investigators" shrugged off the frightening harassment of an inconvenient witness in the Vince Foster death case:

No one knows who ordered the harassment team to begin its operation against Patrick Knowlton on October 26, 1995. However, someone close to the Starr investigation must have tipped them off that Knowlton had received a subpoena.

Throughout Knowlton's ordeal, Starr's team treated the beleaguered witness with extraordinary contempt.

When the street harassment began, Knowlton called the FBI and requested witness protection. Nothing happened for two days. Finally, Agent Russell Bransford--the same FBI agent who had delivered Starr's subpoena--showed up. "He had this smirk on his face, as if he thought the whole thing was amusing," says Knowlton. "I told him to get the hell out of my house."

At the same time Knowlton was calling the FBI, Ruddy and Evans-Pritchard called Deputy Independent Counsel John Bates to report the intimidation of a grand jury witness. Bates's secretary jotted down some notes. "An hour later I called again," says Evans-Pritchard. "She let out an audible laugh and said that her boss had received the message...Bates never called back.

What did Starr's people find so funny about the situation?

As a last resort, Knowlton prepared a "Report of Witness Tampering" and took it personally to the Office of the Independent Counsel. "It was their responsibility, at the very least, to find out who leaked word of his subpoena," notes Evans-Pritchard. According to Evans-Pritchard, John Bates responded by calling security and having Knowlton removed from the building.

Perhaps the most telling indication of Starr's attitude toward Knowlton is the humiliating cross-examination to which this brave man was subjected before the grand jury. Knowlton says that he was "treated like a suspect." Prosecutor Brett Kavanaugh appeared to be trying to imply that Knowlton was a homosexual who was cruising Fort Marcy Park for sex. Regarding the suspicious Hispanic-looking man he had seen guarding the park entrance, Kavanaugh asked, Did he "pass you a note?" Did he "touch your genitals?"

Knowlton flew into a rage at Kavanaugh's insinuations. Evans-Pritchard writes that several African American jurors burst into laughter at the spectacle, rocking "back and forth as if they were at a Baptist revival meeting. Kavanaugh was unable to reassert his authority. The grand jury was laughing at him. The proceedings were out of control."

It was at that point, reports [British reporter and author Ambrose] Evans-Pritchard, that Patrick Knowlton was finally compelled to confront the obvious: "the Office of the Independent Counsel was itself corrupt." (pp. 106-107)

Note carefully the names of those two Starr underlings involved in the harassment of the witness, Knowlton. They are John Bates and Brett Kavanaugh. On page 143 Poe says, not surprisingly, "Like most Americans I support George W. Bush and his War on Terror." But Poe conveniently neglects to tell his readers that this president, whom he praises as a "decent, God-fearing man," has made federal judges--with the approval of the United States Senate--of these two accomplices after the fact of a high-level murder. He even leaves their names out of his extensive index. You will never find this connection made anywhere in the mainstream media, either.

                I rest my case.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting history of an alternative media.......2006-09-08

This book does give a concise and to the point overview of scandals and cover-ups that have ties with Hillary, with documentation for further research. However, as far as this book is specifically concerned, I would describe it as a very interesting history of the new Internet journalists, especially as regards their rocky relationship with Hillary Clinton when she was first lady. In addition to this, it also documents the failure, in many cases, of the mainstream "Big" media (sometimes purposely, according to the author) to report the facts as they are, so as not to offend certain power structures in the country.

I do not believe anyone in their right mind, (Hillary is in her wrong mind :-) reading this wonderful chronology of Internet journalism, could pin the term "vast, right wing conspiracy" on the expository news released by the more conservative Internet journalists. After all, politically speaking, it has been the left wing, and less the right wing (with some exceptions), in recent history, that has resorted to more surreptitious and psychologically deliberate forms of persuasion. Either way, I do agree with Anne Coulter's observation, as quoted in this book, that "Liberals fail in any media realm where there is competition. In the three media where success is determined on the free market--radio, books, and the Internet--conservatives rule....Only a monopoly could produce a Dan Rather." (p. 56)

                4 out of 5 stars Interesting study.......2005-04-27

Richard Poe provides an interesting take on the emergence of the conservative internet as a response to the liberal slanted mainstream media (New York Times, Washington Times, LA Times, CNN and the big three networks). Poe discusses how some of the powers behind such sites as the Drudge Report, NewsMax and FreeRepublic (for example) were ostracized by the mainstream media and turned to the internet to voice their opinions. They were quickly joined by hundreds of thousands of like minded net surfers and what started as a very large discussion forum grew into political action. It was the conservative internet that exposed the falsified documents used as the basis of the CBS "60 Minutes" report on President Bush's National Guard service. Liberals tried unsuccessfully to answer back with their own web sites. When she found she couldn't control them Hillary unleashed her dogs; suddenly people were being audited, sued and some lost funding (when donors were threatened). Through it all they preserved and, in so doing, flourished.

While I have no doubt that liberals would like nothing more than to silence the conservative voice (which threatens their monopoly on news, opinions and, hence, threatens their agenda), I think Poe sometimes sees conspiracies where there may not be any (however, if I went through what some of these folks did I'm not sure I would see conspiracies everywhere also). I also think he goes a bit overboard with his praise of Matt Drudge (and his website).

But those reservations aside I recommend this book for two reasons. First, for anyone coming a bit late to the internet party this book is good at catching you up to what's gone into getting things where they are today. Second I found the discussions of the Vince Foster and Ron Brown cases fascinating. It lays bare the lengths the Clintons, their minions and accomplices within the media will go to obfuscate the truth in pursuit of their goals (power and a return to the White House). Will the internet be powerful enough to stop them? Poe seems to think so. I hope he's right.

5 out of 5 stars An Insider's Guide to the New Underground.......2005-03-14

Poe plays Virgil and Hillary is the Debbil on this fascinating tour of the nether regions of trans millennial political intrigue. It would be hard to find a better spirit guide than Poe. He speaks with a reliable precision when delving the personalities and policies that make up the current American debate. This came forth on an episode of the O'Reily Factor when the host categorized George Soros as a "Leftist." Poe responded that Soros is not a doctrinal leftist and, in fact, is not doctrinaire. He merely wants to rule the World.

Read Secret War and learn about Hillary's collusion with the major media to deflect and divert public attention from the scandals of the Clinton Administration. Get the details on Whitewater, Chinagate, and the Arkancide body count. Find out who really invented the Internet. Read about the New Underground- when it became self aware, who are the major players and what influence it will have on Hillary's aspirations- and what she is willing to do to stop them.

Hillary's Secret War had taken on even greater importance with the implosion of the mainline media that took place shortly after publication. The events of Rathergate read like the next chapter in "..Secret War", highlighting Poe's perspicacity and underlining the credibility and importance of this book.

                5 out of 5 stars Be informed....read this book...........2005-03-04

This is one of the most frightening books I have ever read. Others have reviewed the content very well, so my only message is...If Hillary is on the ballot, please do not go to the polls until you have read this book and understand who she really is. Then make your decision.

Many Americans, concerned about the environment, willingly dig deep in their pockets when asked for a donation by a group with a green-sounding name. Unfortunately, there are many such groups that are fronts for ecologically destructive industries. In this brief but to-the-point book, Deal unmasks more than fifty of them, telling you who's behind them. Make sure your charitable dollars will actually support your principles -- read this book before you donate!

                Book Description

Responding to broad-based concerns about the environment, many ecologically destructive industries have created green facades. This book unmasks more than 50 front groups.

4 out of 5 stars An environmentalist's guide to wolves in sheep's clothing.......2001-03-08

If you want to help sea lions do you turn to the Sea Lion Defense Fund? If you're disturbed about our nation's vanishing wetlands, do you send contributions to the National Wetlands Coalition? And if you're doing a project on global warming, do you turn to the Global Climate Coalition for information?

Then this handy little guide is for you. In an age when so many pro-industry groups have taken on the protective coloration of environmental groups with names indicating ecological concern or scientific objectivity, it's necessary to find out who's REALLY who. This guide is more like a dictionary for translating Orwellian, corporate Newspeak into plain English.

Thus, the Sea Lion Defense Fund aims to "thin out" the sea lion population; the National Wetlands Coalition is a coalition made up chiefly of oil and gas companies who want to limit preservation of wetlands; and the Global Climate Coalition consists of 50 US trade associations who are opposed to many air quality regs.

P.S.: You'll also find Gale Norton's organization in here: the Mountain States Legal Fund.

From the supplier: Greenpeace has proven its ability to bring environmental matters to the public's attention. One example is the group's videotaping of the French Navy's attack against two Greenpeace ships, which were protesting France's planned nuclear testing in the South Pacific.
