The Dalai Lama's mother was illiterate but was a natural storyteller. When her granddaughter asked her to talk about her life, the stories began to roll out. She told of her wedding at the age of 16, her state of virtual servitude as a married woman, murderous ghosts, and her two dead sons left for the birds. Then, after a three-year drought and other strange events preceding the birth of her fifth child, the lamas came from Lhasa, and her Cinderella future was cinched. With her son the Dalai Lama ensconced in his palace, this nondescript peasant woman whose 16 children yielded three incarnate lamas, strolled her garden estate and hobnobbed with the aristocracy. And yet the intrigue, the perils of domestic and international politics, would soon take her husband's life, drive her remaining children into exile, and have her yearning for the quiet drudgery of her former life. Diki Tsering speaks with the unadorned simplicity of an ordinary country girl about a life that was anything but ordinary. --Brian Bruya

4 out of 5 stars Long Ago and Far Away.......2005-07-07

This book relates some of the details of the life of Diki Tsering, the mother of the Dalai Lama. It begins with her childhood in early Twentieth Century Tibet, where she was born into a peasant family. She tells stories of her life as a child, explaining the special relationship she had with her grandparents, and describing the festivals in great detail. She describes her wedding ceremony as a 17-year-old bride, and her new life as stranger and household worker in her husband's family home. As a peasant, Diki Tsering was not rich, but she also was not from the bottom rungs of society, since her family always had a few servants or paid laborers working for them. When one of her children, Lhamo Dhondup, was recognized as the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, her life changed dramatically. The family was moved to Lhasa, were they became acquainted with aristocratic society and were given large land holdings and servants. As the mother of the Dalai Lama, she was then able to live the life of an aristocrat and travel widely. However, she was also subject to the dangers of Tibetan and international politics, which eventually led to her flight from Tibet in 1958.

The beginning of the book is quite fascinating, with its descriptions of customs and peasant practices in rural Tibet. Her later descriptions of life in Lhasa and travels are not quite as detailed or engaging, but they do provide interesting documentation of Tibetan history at a crucial point in time.

5 out of 5 stars Dalai Lama, My Son.......2003-11-17

A serious, yet interesting audio book about the story of the Dalai Lama as told from his mother's perspective. Only 4 cassettes long, this unabridged version of the book drew me into the unique culture of Tibet in the early 20th century. The music was peaceful as well as the voice of the reader. In addition, I recommend the breath-taking video "Kandu"; also about the upbringing of the Dalai Lama.

I beleave this book was insightful. It was fairly simple to read, and was worded well. however, reading this, and several other books for an honors project, i must say that it takes a different reader to enjoy. i also read invading tibet, which i thought was much more fun to read. Dalai lama my son is a good book, but to me it seemed flat.

5 out of 5 stars Tibet in a Different Light.......2001-02-01

This is a magnificent autobigraphy. Also, a very upsetting one. The "Tibet in Exile" website claims that Tibet had women's rights. This book by the Dalai Lama's mother claims otherwise. In Amdo, which is Eastern Tibet, they had a custom that seemed to work for adultery. But not for women. The family of the woman who was the offender were required to kill her. Dike Tsering goes into more detail. Also, if a man died leaving his wife alone, she was required not to marry for three years. Then the family would conduct "secret negotiations" for profit. This caused many Tibetan women to commit suicide. The book also displays the tremendous impact of astrology. How you got married, who you married, and so forth. The astrologer was consulted on all matters of importance in the family. And there were ghosts. One ghost was resposible for the deaths of four of her children. In Lhasa, there were tremendous class distinctions! And Diki Tsering displays them simply as horrible snobs. This applys to the aristocrats who lived off their "bonded laborers". And wouldn't even call them by name. They also acted like Diki Tsering was nothing but "a farm hand". The two regents who controlled Tibet while the Dalai Lama was growing up were Reting Rinpoche and Taktra Rinpoche. Reting was the first regent, until he was supposedly assasinated by Taktra Rinpoche. The author also believes, as did the people of Tibet, that Taktra Rinpoche poinsoned her husband, the father of the Dalai Lama, because he was friends with Reting Rinpoche. Nevertheless, Reting Rinpoche was not without violence. A Tsipan Lungshar led a movemovement for reform. Reting Rinpoche had his eyes goughed out as punishment. I find the testimony of Diki Tsering very good. She is really strong and seems to speak with great truth. I believe her about the ghosts and the astrology. But about the other issues, and as a follower of Tibetan Buddhism, I am more depressed than usual! But I do feel that this is a must read for people who do want to save Tibet. We have to know our "weakspots" so that they don't come back later to haunt us. And I don't mean ghosts! Please buy and read the book. Thank you very much.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting and honest (except title) account........2000-11-19

If you're looking for an in-depth portrait of the Dalai Lama as a child, you will probably be disappointed here. This is not the story of "Dalai Lama, My Son," but of the mother. The first almost half of the book tells of her youth and married life in Ambo, or Qinghai Province. A few pages in the middle do describe the Dalai Lama's early character leading to his selection. From there on, his mother refers to him as "His Holiness" and says little about him, but tells her personal and family story after fate plunged them into politics.

I did enjoy the book, though, especially the first part. I've lived and traveled in the Himilayan foothills of southern China. Reading the author's description of her familie's life style -- celebrations, marriage, story telling, being snowed in during winter -- made me want to go back and see more.

A famous missionary doctor, Dr. Paul Brand, once said his ideal lifestyle, apart from a need for modern medicine, would be that of an Indian villager. This account of the Tibetan lifestyle, and my own travels through the minority areas of Yunnan Province, confirm how much that is human and natural we lose in our surrender to technology: rhythms of the seasons, traditions, the hard pleasure of sowing and reaping, and what it means to depend on family and community.

The later part of the book is interesting sometimes, but is a bit like the story of a pawn who wanders onto a chessboard by mistake and gets moved around by both sides without quite knowing what is going on.

Despite the quarrel below, there is little about what Westerners call Buddhism in this book. What most Asians call Buddhism is a mixture of polytheism, various superstitions, practical concern about evil spirits, and a cycle of annual festivals, with priests occupying a respected but mostly ceremonial position. One of the most surprising things about this very open and simple account is that the Dalai Lama's mother is allowed to speak as a typical Asian in this respect.

In fact, there may be more about ghosts here than about the author's most famous son. Tsering blamed them for the loss of four of her children (out of sixteen), and did not seem embarrassed by the odd character of the stories she told. Her stories set me thinking. One of the foundational myths of Tibetan Buddhism is the tale of how the monk Phadmasambhava conquered the demons of Tibet, and having conquered them, put them to work for the forces of good. Tsering's experiences with ghosts might cause some to reconsider the relative merits of the "tolerant" Buddhist approach and the more confrontational Christian approach to powers and principalities. One also wonders, of course, what relationship these spirits bare to the diseases that marred the lifestyle of such peasants.

5 out of 5 stars Opens a New Aspect of the Civil War.......2005-03-25

At the end of the Civil War Grant was critized for having given Lee surrender terms that were far less harsh than the people of the Union felt should have been imposed.

Grant, however, was afraid that Lee would disperse his army to continue the war as a guerrilla army. It may be that he also wanted to save something of the union rather than creating unending hatred on the part of the south.

During the war the South had created several of what would now be called irregular forces. The varied from the Gray Ghost, John Mosby in Virginia to Fortest and Morgan in Kentucky/Tennessee, to a range of groups in Arkansas/Missouri that included William Quantrill, Frank and Jesse James, Cole Younger and others that were little more than bandits.

The Union was able to defeat these units, but only at great cost in people, money, and equipment. Building a blockhouse to defend every railroad bridge is a major effort. (The Union blockhouses looked a great deal like the blockhouses used by the British to defeat the Boors in South Africa forty years later.)

This book brings this new story to the accumulated literature of the Civil War in an organized and complete manner that hasn't been done before. This is an area of the war that can no longer be neglected in our histories.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Recommendation, Interesting perspective on Irregular .......2005-02-17

The book is focused on irregular war in the upper South during the period 1862 to 1865 it is a scholarly work that is based on primary source documents from the official records of the National Archive and provides a clarity and understanding that dispels current myths.

The author begins his work by explaining the differences between partisan war, guerrilla war and raiding and he sets this stage by explaining the historical theory and practice of the time. Although it may appear that this definitional distinction is semantics, it is not and the 3 types of warfare are distinct. The author uses Jomini as the basis for defining these types of operations. This author takes his analysis another step by placing the definitions and doctrine within the context of the time and does not compare it with modern notions. This is an important aspect of methodology in which he rests both his thesis and the book. This author places both the success and failure of irregular war during the civil war into context within the period. Lastly, "Contrary to many historians he argues that the confederacy overtly organized and fought an irregular war and lost....that this unconventional war existed not as a separate conflict from the conventional conflict but formed and integral part of the overall war strategy" (from page 21 of the book)

In order to get a better understanding of this thesis and theory it would be extremely beneficial if one obtained the book "Compound Warfare That Fatal Knot". This is a product of the US Army War Command and General Staff College and you can download this from there web site in a pdf format or order this online from the US Government Printing Office.

This book is a valuable contribution to understanding the important lessons learned in counter-insurgency. At times the book is slow, but, all in all it is a good book and warrants serious consideration by any student of warfare. I strongly recommend this book

4 out of 5 stars A war in the shadows ..........2004-12-26

The Upper South--Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas--was the scene of the most destructive war ever fought in the Western hemisphere. It included, among even more bloody encounters such as Gettysburg and Antietam, the battles of Manassas, Shiloh, Perryville, and Pea Ridge.

In The Uncivil War, Robert Mackey writes a dissertation about the unconventional warfare in the Upper South during the American Civil War. He points out that, alongside conventional warfare, where soldiers confronted one another in opposing lines of battle, there existed a "shadow war" employing irregular strategies--hit-and-run, behind-the-lines, create-havoc-and-confusion "guerrilla" attacks.

Examining the entire spectrum of irregular warfare during the Civil War: Mackey makes a distinction between three types of tactics: guerrilla (or people's war), partisan warfare, and raiding warfare. His thesis is that, whereas such maneuvers had limited success, they were ultimately unsuccessful, and often counterproductive, in their results.

Contrary to many historians, Mackey argues that the Confederacy overtly organized and fought an irregular conflict but lost. Also in contrast to previous scholars, he argues that this unconventional war existed not as a separate conflict from the conventional conflict but as an integral but subordinate part of the overall Confederate conduct of the war.

Mackey zeroes in on such leaders as Thomas C. Hindman in Arkansas, John Singleton Mosby in Virginia, John Hunt Morgan in Kentucky (and also in Tennessee, Indiana, and Ohio), and Nathan Bedford Forrest in Tennessee."

In his description of Mosby, "the Gray Ghost of the Confederacy," Mackey writes, "Mosby was larger than life, a monster that would spring out of the darkness to attack isolated outposts and sentries and steal horses, supplies, and weapons, before fading back into the countryside."

One should remember that such encounters were often bloody and fatal; all was not swashbuckling adventure, fun and games. "War loses a great deal of romance," said Mosby, "after a soldier has seen his first battle."

Nathan Bedford Forrest (who, by the way, was born in Chapel Hill, Tenn.) was so elusive and persistent in his attack-and-destroy tactics, that the Union Army referred to him as "that devil Forrest." When asked was the secret of military success, Forrest replied, "War means killing, and the way to kill is to get there first with the most men."

Whereas most of the books written about the Civil War deal with conventional warfare fought by "regular" forces, The Uncivil War brings a fascinating perspective on "the war fought in the shadows." Mackey shows why such irregular warfare, while often annoying and sometimes highly disruptive and destructive, was ultimately a failure.

Major Robert R. Mackey, Ph.D., is a career Army officer currently working as a Strategic Plans and Policy specialist at the Pentagon. A graduate of Arkansas State University and Texas A&M University, he is a decorated veteran of Panama, Desert Storm, and Iraqi Freedom, and he taught military history at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He is a member of the Society for Military History, the Southern Historical Society, and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and Staff College and the School of Advanced Military Studies. He devotes his free time to volunteer work at the Manassas National Battlefield and Civil War reenactments portraying a soldier of the 5th New York Infantry, "Duryee's Zouaves." His dissertation, from which The Uncivil War developed, was the top-selling dissertation in the U.S. for 2002.

              Book Description

In this second edition of The Congressional Experience, which has been revised and updated to cover events that have occurred over the past six years, Congressman David Price proves he is uniquely qualified to guide us through the labyrinth of rules, roles, and representatives that is Congress, and to show us how the institution can and does solve some of the most pressing social problems on the national political agenda today. Price combines an engaging, enlightening narrative with photos, figures, maps, and tables to tell the story of his odyssey from the ivory tower of Duke University to the citadel of Capitol Hill. Along the way, we get a clear sense of the challenges, disappointments, elation, and deep concerns implicit in serving as a member of Congress-especially the kind of member David Price has chosen to be.

Everyone blames Congress; no one explains it. But, in this second edition of The Congressional Experience, which has been revised and updated to cover events that have occurred over the past six years, Congressman David Price proves he is uniquely qualified to guide us through the labyrinth of rules, roles, and representatives that is Congress, and to show us how the institution solves some of the most pressing social problems on the national political agenda today. Price combines an engaging, enlightening narrative with photos, figures, maps, and tables to tell the story of his odyssey from the ivory tower of Duke University to the citadel of Capitol Hill. In an election year filled with name-calling, teeth-gnashing, and Congress-bashing, it is refreshing to hear Price discuss what it means to simultaneously serve his constituency, his country, and his strong personal convictions about good government.

As students of the political process, we are instructed in campaign strategy and finance, the advantages and disadvantages of incumbency, how to get a legislative project off the ground, the intricate House committee and subcommittee system, the tortuous route a bill must travel to become law, and the strong role of parties in Congress. As voters and constituents, we are treated to firsthand accounts of election campaigns fraught with negative ads, town meetings on Medicare, fierce budget battles on the floor of the House, and persistent efforts on behalf of individual North Carolinians. As citizen-philosophers, we are drawn into an extended consideration of the complex interrelationships among politics, religion, and ethics. In this context, Congressman David Price looks at a variety of issues through an introspective lens of moral concern.

Price shares invaluable insights into debates on such topics as campaign finance reform, congressional term limits, and controlling the federal deficit. At the same time, he imparts a personal glimpse into life "on the Hill" and its impacts on family, friends, and constituents.

4 out of 5 stars Congress from the Inside.......2001-08-05

Price tells the real story of how the Congress works. What happens to a new member upon arrival to the Capitol Hill? Many people have a picture in their mind that gives a simple, mechanical explanation of how the Congress works: a representative is elected and works for his/her constituency. Price show the inner power dynamic of Congress, with its system of seniority and committee assignments. This is a valuable, readable, and very informative contribution.

                                Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This is why everyone hates environmentalists...........2004-02-03

Sanctimonious, pompous, preachy - divides the world into two groups: those who are "biocentric" (that is, they share certain religious views, like the "all animals are our brothers and have inherent rights equal to humans"), and those who are contemptuously labelled as part of the problem. In one highly insulting (and highly illogical) passage, they even purport to prove "scientifically" (?) that "biocentric" people are at a higher state of evolution than everyone else. Apparently it has never occurred to these people that evaluating one's motives for wanting a cleaner environment is not the way to get everyone working together for the common good. The first rule of negotiation is "separate people from the problem" - but this book isn't interested in the problem, it's interested in blaming people. That's my first complaint - the pages and pages of whining because humankind is the way it is. (Imagine a criminal justice or sociology or any other kind of text spending two chapters on why the problem proves that people are bad and how we're all responsible and how the problem will go away when we all voluntarily start behaving the way we ought!)

My second complaint is that its solutions are stupid, counterproductive, and don't work. If everyone wants a clean environment but nobody wants to make huge changes to their lifestyle, it seems illogical to focus one's energy on trying to get people to stop driving and stop having children. There are only two ways to get people to do something (regardless of the nature of the problem): overwhelming force or persuasion. Guilt trips don't work and environmentalists haven't GOT overwhelming force, so they need to stop preaching and start looking for solutions. The San Diego Trolley works, on its tiny scale - find out how to make it work on a great big scale. Want to save a tree? Figure out how to get people to buy flooring and paper made with bamboo - stuff grows like a weed. Sustainable farming is a dead end: I've done it, and there are a million problems they don't talk about - but hydroponics gets pesticides (and bioengineering) out of the environment, can feed the world, and has the potential to do so at a PROFIT. In other words, stop these stupid, dead-end techniques that haven't worked and try applying the same problem-solving models that all other sciences and industries use to brainstorm new ideas.

The environment is too important for this sort of bull. We don't need (and most people do NOT want) preaching and religious dogma. We need to come together to ask, what new ideas can we come up with? How can we work WITH, instead of AGAINST, human interests? How can we embrace economic and political and social behavior as the natural part of nature that it is, instead of treating it like a disease that can be eradicated? People don't really want to repeal the Industrial Revolution. They want new solutions, not to be told to go back to the way things were. We gave up farming by hand for a reason. This book is a big part of the problem, because where it should be talking about how to create "options for mutual gain", instead it's talking about everyone outside of their own narrow interest as a potential enemy, rather than a potential ally.

By the way, the business model language I used comes from "Negotiating A Complex World" (Starkey, Boyer, Wilkenfield). They also talk about why nobody really wanted from the start to implement Kyoto but everyone wanted to LOOK like they were serious about Kyoto, to shut up the environmentalists. Pressure tactics and guilt trips and moralizing ain't gonna work, you guys. Time to figure out what will....

5 out of 5 stars optimal environmental education.......2000-09-15

I feel lucky to have been a student of Dr. Kaufman's Environmental Biology class at Miami University. This textbook was the first and perhaps only in which I was excited to get to the basement of Brill Science Library in order to bury my nose in its every page. Dr. Kaufman and his Biosphere 2000 have forever altered the course of my life and I feel it can, if taught right, have the same impact on any truth seeking student of the world. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars A very well written textbook for environmental educators........1997-10-08

This book is one of many environmentl education books I've looked through and it appears to be the best of the lot. The book is well thought out including fascinating pieces written by students. If you're teaching an environmental science class you must review this book.
