I was born and bred in Virginia. I didn't like this book. I identified with only about 25 percent of it. For example, all of the women in my family are good housekeepers. Also, for the prospective buyer, there is foul language in it and a pornographic description of a lesbian affair.
It is interesting that most of the reviews that rave over this book are from northerners.

A friend shared this book with me. King's wit is unsurpassed in this day and age. Having found myself being an "honorary southerner" - relocated from the midwest to the deep south - her question throughout the book ("just what IS a lady?") could only have been explored with such humor and insight as this writer. I found myself laughing openly numerous times - not in a Bridget-Jones-Diary-Outrageous way, but in the One-Couldn't-MAKE-THIS-STUFF-Up kind of way.
Having born witness to many similar smelling-salt-scenarios King describes, I found myself fully entwined in this book. Poignant, observant, honest, intelligent, this is one writer you need to have on your bookshelf.

King's book features a quirky mish mash of mismatched family members who, at first glance, seem not to belong together at all. This book examines the various relationships of those characters while simultaneously being a coming of age story regarding young Florence King as she ages throughout this books and faces the many trials and tribulations of her various ages. I've read this book several times and it never fails to get a laugh out of me as Florence moves through her childhood and young adulthood with her brash, tomboy mother who smokes and screams at baseball games on the radio, her father a proper British bartender who works nights and her granny who defines all Southern women as having either problems "down below" or else "in the head." This book will have you holding your side in stitches in places as you laugh yourself silly. A truly great reaad.

I am truly a southerner, and Ms. King's irreverant approach to the traditions and ways of the south in the mid-twentieth century are so on target that it will startle the reader who is not from the south, and will sound all to familiar to the southern reader.
I found her covert feminism during this time in her life very interesting and educational. It almost seemed like the fact that she was a feminist during this time in her life was unknown to even herself.
Her honest talk about her sexual life I found startling.
The way she challenged the cultural norms of that time is educational for anyone who is living under a cloud of opression, real or just real to you.

A Lesson in True Individuality.......2005-10-01
Every once in awhile I have to reread Florence King, beginning with this book. For all the talk about individuality, different drummers and 'being yourself' that we hear endlessly - I need her to remind me what real individuality looks like. Her books make me laugh and cry as hard the fifth time around as I did the first time.
Few characters in either fiction or non-fiction have become as real and as loved to me(with all their foibles) as Granny, Momma, Herb, Jensy and even Tulaplee the quintessential southern belle.

The Gurkhas have a long and distinguished service record. This book examines the uniforms, equipment, history and organisation of the Gurkha rifles. It traces the 19th origins of the now famous Gurkha regiments and also covers their service history during the Great Mutiny and the 3rd Afghan War. During the two World Wars the Gurhah rifles performed countless tours of duty and their regimental battle honours listed in the book bear testimony to their extensive service. A series of full colour illustrations accompany the text.

A Compelling World War II Memoir!.......2007-05-01
I very much enjoyed reading this very well written, interesting, and compelling war memoir!
I initially purchased the book to read about the author's experiences with the American Field Service in North Africa. Manned by mostly-well educated individuals from almost every state in the nation, the AFS consisted of young volunteer ambulance drivers who served with the British Eighth Army in North Africa before the United States entered World War II.
Those volunteers not only drove ambulances but also carried stretchers and served as medics for wounded British, Commonwealth and French soldiers fighting the Germans in North Africa. A few of them, such as Scott Gilmore, the author of the book, volunteered to join the British Army after their one year contract tour with the AFS had ended.
Gilmore went on to fight the Japanese in Burma with the 8th Gurkha Rifles. The author faithfully recorded his impressions of every aspect of military life and especially Great Britain's loyal Gurkha soldiers. The result is an excellent World War II memoir.
This book is recommended for anyone interested in the roles of the British and Indian armies in Burma during World War II and Gurkha troops and formations.
Not enough on Gurkha soldiers.......2001-01-02
I enjoyed the book but had hoped that it would have more of an American perspective on the Gurkha soldiers, with whom I am familiar. Instead, the book presents an interesting narrative of the way in which an American became an officer in the Indian Army, with a Gurkha regiment. (An American officer with Gurkhas was a significant surprise for me, as I'd not assumed it had ever happened.) Additionally, there is a significant portion of the book written on parts of the Burma campaign against the Japanese.
While I had hoped there would be more reflection on the Gurkhas as soldiers and people, and perhaps a different view than that of the typical British officer, I do recommend the book for any with an interest in the India/Burma components of WWII. I'm sure I'd enjoy sharing a cup of coffee and some tales with the author.
Decent Burma Memoir.......2000-05-05
In all the books that have been written on the Burma theatre of operations, this is one is perhaps not so stark and vivid as John Master's, "The Road Past Mandalay" or George Macdonald Fraser's "Quartered Safe Out Here."
It is noteable in two respects: It details the training involved in making one an officer in the Ghurkas and it also gives a good account of some of later fighting around Arakan and final push against the Japanese in Burma. It is a vital memoir but it pales in comparison to, Michael Calvert's "Days of Hope" or Bernard Fergusson's "Beyond the Chindwin."

This book brings together Carlos Fuentes' reflections on the North American and global political crisis developed under the George W. Bush administration. It compiles articles that the author has published in newspapers and magazines from around the world between August 2000 and July 2004, plus a never before published prologue and a final reflection. The articles go as far back as the vote-count conflict during the 2000 Gore/Bush elections until the current war in Iraq. In interviews, Fuentes has stated that he decided to publish this book in hopes of giving Latino voters a light into the country's situations.
In these articles, Carlos Fuentes tries to make clear the need to recover an international, multilateral and reliable world order, with the purpose of trying to solve political conflicts by means of diplomatic negotiation and social conflicts by means of international solidarity. Terrorism does not only have religious fundamentalism as its origin, but also economic misery, political oppression, and the distorted perception, at times accurate, that the weak can take from the strong. It is the duty of the strong to promote constructive policies that eliminate centers of tensions, which is what attracts those unsatisfied and fanatic groups. This is the great problem of our time; George W. Bush has not contributed towards eliminating these tensions, but instead he has intensified it.

El magnifico Mexicano autor Carlos Fuentes nos ofrece sus opiniones sobre el Presidente Bush y como afecta Los Estados Unidos y el mundo en general. Mas bien el libro es como una seria de reflexiones como un diario sobre importante datos entre los anos Agosto de 2000 y Junio 2004. Es muy interestante,leer sus opiniones anos despues de varios asuntos que han pasado y ya podendo entender el afecto sobre el politico y economias del mundo. En realidad son opiniones y por eso no pueden ser corecto ni falso, son eso y nada mas, opiniones pero por refexiones de un intelectual internacional con capaz de hacer te pensar sobre sus ideas. Yo no estaba de acuerdo con todo lo que dice el senor Fuentes pero como tengo mucho respecto por Carlos Fuentes queria entender sus opiniones. Tambien tengo respecto para el Presidente Bush y el asunto en que nos encontramos . Aungue las ideas son generalmente como el titulo del libre, contra Bush, puedes leer este libro con una mente abrierto y ser mejor por el. Las ideas sobre el petropoder y la guerra tienen una linea transversal que es deficil disputar pero tambien hay otras razones que no estan explorado. Fuentes no dice nada nuevo pero siempre tiene un modo de presentar sus ideas con color y pensamiento. Las nociones de Fuentes son contra mis ideas pero sin embargo los entiendo y algunos hasta tienen merito. Te recomendo este libro y despues de leer usted puedes tener tu propia opinion sobre sus analysis.

Estoy de acuerdo que este libro realmente no tiene nada "nuevo" a decir sobre la presidencia de George W. Bush. Sin embargo, es una obra mas filosofica que pone el presidente en el contexto del mundo y de la historia (hay muchos libros contraBushistas que enfocan solamente en el pueblo de los Estados Unidos, o que contienen paginas de especulaciones sin raices: estas cosas no encontrarás en Contra Bush). Por eso, vale la pena leerlo y tenerlo en tu coleccion.

Este libro es muy importante y tiene que ser leído por todos los latinos que viven en los Estados Unidos. Ahora bajo la administración de Bush todo ha sido hecho un caos de nuestra economía y de las pólizas internacionales con otros países, empezando con la guerra y las armas de "terrorismo". Fuentes es muy atrevido en escribir un libro con un tema llamado Contra Bush pero se supone que en este país uno tiene libertad de decir lo que uno quiera. Pero no me sorprendería si eso cambia también porque ahora hasta están cambiando la constitución bajo esta administración. Lo que es frustrante es que libros come este y películas como del Sr. Moore no hicieron ninguna diferencia en la ultima elección en Noviembre. He recibido comentarios de personas americanas de que como alguien que no nacio ni vive en los Estados Unidos puede escribir un libro criticando al gobierno de Washington D.C.
Primero, me parece excelente que un intelectual mexicano haga una sintesis tan completa de ideas que le han surgido a lo largo del gobierno de W. Bush. El compendio de pensamientos del autor a lo largo de este desastroso gobierno americano sintetiza la frustracion de todos los que hemos tenido el tiempo de pensar cada paso que ha dado la administracion actual.
Segundo, los americanos tienden a meter sus narices en cada rincon de nuestros paises e incluso a hablar con supuesta propiedad y conocimiento de todos los temas e.g. el alegado alcoholismo de Lula puesto al "descubierto" por un periodista yanqui. Da gusto leer un libro tan critico al gobierno americano escrito con tanto conocimiento del tema y entendimiento del entorno completo.
Tercero, no se necesita ser adivino ni pensador de tiempo completo para darse cuenta de los atropellos al orden mundial que se hacen todos los dias por el gobierno de W. Bush. Fuentes hace alusion de los mejores momentos de esta administracion en el ambito de destruir tratados, acuerdos y relaciones internacionales para el unico objetivo de permanecer y enriquecerse.
Este libro no dice nada nuevo, los que hemos seguido el curso de la administracion Bush y sobretodo hemos dedicado el tiempo a pensar y reflexionar cada movimiento de su gobierno nos hemos dado cuentas de lo que se incluye y mas; pero es muy valioso el trabajo de Fuentes al atreverse a escribir lo que escribe y sobretodo al opinar tan abiertamente del desastre ideologico, politico e intelectual de W. Bush y su grupo nefasto en el poder.
Hoy dia para W. Bush es prioridad su bolsillo y el fundamentalismo neoconservador en el que vive Washington D.C. El mundo entero le grita en su cara otro tipo de prioridades: libertad, democracia, justicia, salud, alimentacion, investigaciones, entre muchisimas mas.
