5 out of 5 stars To Educate.......2007-04-21

One of the most profound statements in the book was when Mr. Gregory was explaining racism, and I quote "Those old illiterate Negroes were all the White folks had to validate who they were. Could you imagine being a redneck who knew he was an illiterate cracker, and who knew that, as White as he was, he could never be president of the USA? As white as he was, he was never going to drive a Mercedes or go to Paris. So the only thing a redneck had to play with was niggers." and that is why when civil rights workers started educating the black folks about slavery the white rednecks were willing to kill to keep them. Because they were not only taking their niggers they were taking their dignity and self respect.

Dick Gregory's memoir is among the most honest and touching autobiographies available today. From the first page, I was drawn into his experience as if I were actually transitioning through pre-Civil Rights Era, the Movement, and the post-era that has evolved into today. Sometimes the pain of Gregory's experiences was so real that I literally felt the dull pain of sympathy in my gut, the tragic feeling that accompanies love or indignation. Callus On My Soul was a history lesson that will never appear on the pages of American textbooks, and a reality check that I will never forget.

With choices come sacrifice, and in Dick Gregory's book CALLUS ON MY SOUL, he tells the story of his life and shares with readers both the positive things he gained and the things he has had to forego as a result of his decisions. He tells of his childhood, which included a life of poverty, racism, and an absentee father. But more importantly, Gregory shares how he learned as a child to use humor as a way to transcend his difficult life experiences and gain peer acceptance. This would serve as an omen for the important role that comedy would play in his later life. As Gregory tells of his developing career as a comedian, readers quickly see the sacrifices that he and his family made in order to achieve the level of fame that he ultimately became known for. A great portion of the book is dedicated to Gregory's experiences and commitment to social causes. He relates to readers his experiences in the civil rights and human rights struggles, and tells of his personal experiences with both noteworthy and little known social activists. He tells of how he and other activists sacrificed their careers, physical safety, and time with family in order to stand up for what they believe in.

Because Dick Gregory has played such an integral role in so many historical events relating to civil and human rights, this book is so much more than a memoir. Anyone who picks this book up receives a new insight into many of the events that shaped the history of the United States. In addition, Gregory shares his own political views and opinions with a boldness and clarity that makes it evident that he is indeed an activist at heart. He also tells of the unwavering support of his wife and ten children as he fasted, went on cross country marathons, and even traveled the world leaving them at home. CALLUS ON MY SOUL is a political, historical, and personal account of a man who has dedicated much of his life to a number of worthy causes.

Brother Greg believes O.J. is innocent. That is hard to believe, and there is some paranoia with his thinking. Conspiracy theories make for good fiction, but some of it is enlightening and believable. Mr. Gregory is a great man, and has a lot of knowledge. He is very smart. He is very funny, but he is also obsessed. If he calms down, he would do better. I love him. He is trying so hard to stop world hunger, and wants people to be slim and trim, and not fat as a pig. He wants justice. If people were more like Mr. Gregory, the world would be a much better place.

3 out of 5 stars The Nimitz Class.......2007-02-19

As a middle school teacher and having naval expertise, I would recommend this book for those kids in middle school who have some interest in such ships. A short book about that class ship, only, very little info about the planes or specific ship of that class. Book talks about certain spaces on the ship, but not of engineering, few photos on planes, and talks about some of the people responsibilities. But short for 30 page book with pictures, a picture book.

Amazon.com

At least one Amazon.com customer has found several errors of naval rank and military history in the first few pages of Patrick Robinson's blockbuster about a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier suddenly vaporized by a terrorist submarine. But if you're a plain, old-fashioned thrill seeker like me, you'll probably zip right past them as you try to keep up with the Tom Clancy-like explosion of technical trivia and plot twists. This is one of those books you pick up right after X-Files, planning to read for an hour before bed. Next thing you know it's 5 a.m., you've still got 50 pages to go--and you keep on reading.

Book Description

The unthinkable has happened. The nuclear-powered Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier Thomas Jefferson, the most powerful warship in the world, home to a crew of 6,000 sailors and navy fliers, has been vaporized at sea in what appears to be a nuclear accident. The loss of life is devastating. It is the greatest peacetime disaster in U.S. history, and the shockwaves reverberate around the world.

Yet even as America grieves, Lt. Commander Bill Baldridge of Naval Intelligence, brother of one of the victims, begins to piece together reports that suggest something sinister lurks beneath the surface of this tragedy. A rogue submarine armed with a nuclear torpedo is on the loose, no one knows who commands it, who is on board or how it managed to reach striking range of the Thomas Jefferson. Worse yet, no one knows where it is now. Will it strike again? Baldridge will not rest until he brings his brother's killers to justice, and as one clue leads to another, the deadly chase is on.

Every technical detail in Nimitz Class has been authenticated by Admiral Sir John Woodward, the senior British task group commander in the Falklands War, to ensure that every naval maneuver, every harrowing plot twist could really happen. Chilling, compelling, completely authentic and supplemented with detailed maps and technical illustrations, this white-knuckle, read-through-the-night thriller heralds the astonishing debut of a new master of suspense.

Download Description

The U.S.S. Thomas Jefferson is one of the most powerful warships in the world. A nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, it is believed to be impregnable. But when the Thomas Jefferson suddenly disappears at sea, the Pentagon is stunned. There was no warning. No apparent attack. And no survivors. All signs point to a nuclear accident. But subsequent reports suggest that a rogue submarine, armed with nuclear warheads, may be on the loose. Where did it come from? How could it get within striking distance of the Thomas Jefferson? Worse yet, where is it now? The deadly chase begins.

1 out of 5 stars Really Boring Supermilitaristic.......2007-10-16

This is a book for right-wing people who never met a military person who didn't cause them to think, "What a man!!" (There aren't that many military women in this book.) And people who think that the US military goes all over the world making it safe for us and others. And people who think it's fine to talk about shutting down a newspaper that prints things disagreeable to the military. One might wonder why someone like me kept listening to this book. I can only answer that I was promised excitement and many twists and turns. But there were hardly any of these. I skipped many tracks and followed the story just fine. And exciting??? The protagonist can't drink a cup of coffee without your having to hear how it tasted. If you think this is exciting, have at it.

1 out of 5 stars Post 9/11 Howler.......2007-06-11

Nimitz Class is so bad it's funny. It's like a fairy tale or cartoon, with the Red State conservative supermen-- always handsome, brilliant, with piercing blue eyes, and much given to remarks about the "goddamn towel heads"-- strutting around the stage being manly and admirable. You get hilarious combinations like dashing naval officers who are also MIT Ph.D.'s in physics, who are also cowboys, who are also 'American royalty' who love opera and know their wines, whose mother lives on a cattle ranch but went to Wellesley...and on and on. It get pretty silly.

But the real howlers come from comparing the book with the reality of the Bush Presidency and the disaster he has fashioned post 9/11. The President is depicted as a man from the Southwest, who was a brilliant success at Harvard Law. Well-- LOL!-- mediocrity at Yale, undistinguished at Harvard Business School, but anyway you can tell it's supposed to be Bush. The best line is where someone says that the best thing about a Republican White House is that it's so crowded with competent, erudite people. LOL!!!!

All I can say is, Brownie you're doing a heck of a job. I mean Robinson.

My dad was a WWII submariner in the Pacific and spent thirty years in Naval Intel. I'm sorry he's gone...he'd laugh himself silly with this absurd book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-09

I enjoyed reading the book. It was hard to put down, you were constantly trying to figure out what was going to happen next. The book makes you want to go out and buy the next one in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Super story for submarine fans.......2006-05-18

That was one of the best books I have read on modern submarine warfare and the story was also very good. The elimination of a US supercarrier by a single nuclear-tipped torpedo was presented in an exciting way, as was the hunting of the renegade submarine that followed. The episode of the British sub passing through the Bosporus Straights was absolutely marvellous and I wish Robinson had devoted some more pages to the hunting of the enemy sub, instead of discovering it by chance.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and exciting read!.......2005-07-29

This book was an excellent read. Undoubtedly the best of Robinson's works to date. He develops the story intelligently, carefully and with a lot of suspense, which contrasts somewhat with popular submarine novels from other authors, who tend to drown the story in techno-details and over-imaginative plots, and a lot of explosions! Through the story, we travel to some fascinating locations and meet well-developed and diverse characters. I particularly enjoyed the playful banter between Morgan and Rankin, although Morgan's is somewhat overdone in places. I heartily recommend this book to anybody What's more, the sequel, Kilo Class, is just as entertaining!

    Product Description

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A349033. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis addresses Nimitz class aircraft carrier tank and void maintenance. It contributes to the solution of current maintenance problems in four ways. First, it stratifies Nimitz class aircraft carrier tanks and voids into ten groups and assigns a criticality factor to each group. These groups and criticality factors can be extended to other classes of ships. Second, it demonstrates methods to estimate the survival function of tank and void coating lifetimes based on inspection data. Actual estimates of the survival function for each group are given, but are based on current data of questionable quality. Third, it develops a decision tool to plan inspections and budget maintenance costs over multiyear periods. Preliminary application of this tool demonstrates the cost effectiveness of driving maintenance by inspection. Finally, sampling plans provided to AIRLANT for CVN 71 1997 EDSRA and CVN 73 1997 SRA are discussed. These sampling plans were developed to obtain unbiased estimates of the current proportion of failed tanks within each group. By using plans such as these, unbiased estimates of the survival function for each group can be computed. This thesis provides a framework for developing a long term inspection and maintenance program.

At what point can it be said that a state has collapsed? This volume, after the editor Zartman's inieial essay on the nature and causes of state collapse, proivides individual essays by other specialists that examine the nature of state collapse in different countries. Mist of these, given the nature of the phenomenon uner examination, are in Africa. There are remarkaple similarities in the almost mechanical processes that take place when a state is about to fall into anarchy. This is an excvellent volume to understand Somalia, Algeria, Congo Chad and others. It also attempts to examine the signs of imminent collapse. This volume is indispensable , i find, despite its mid 90's publication in understanding what happened in Afghanistan if only by conjecture. The coming Anarchy, and The Ends of the Earth by Robert Kaplan are also excellent complementary volumes even if they are not written in the academic tomne of the Zaertman volume.

      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

        Book Description

Fundamentals of Building Energy Dynamics assesses how and why buildings use energy, and how energy use and peak demand can be reduced. It provides a basis for integrating energy efficiency and solar approaches in ways that will allow building owners and designers to balance the need to minimize initial costs, operating costs, and life-cycle costs with need to maintain reliable building operations and enhance environmental quality both inside and outside the building. Chapters trace the development of building energy systems and analyze the demand side of solar applications as a means for determining what portion of a building's energy requirements can potentially be met by solar energy.

Following the introduction, the book provides an overview of energy use patterns in the aggregate U.S. building population. Chapter 3 surveys work on the energy flows in an individual building and shows how these flows interact to influence overall energy use. Chapter 4 presents the analytical methods, techniques, and tools developed to calculate and analyze energy use in buildings, while chapter 5 provides an extensive survey of the energy conservation and management strategies developed in the post-energy crisis period.

The approach taken is a commonsensical one, starting with the proposition that the purpose of buildings is to house human activities, and that conservation measures that negatively affect such activities are based on false economies. The goal is to determine rational strategies for the design of new buildings, and the retrofit of existing buildings to bring them up to modern standards of energy use. The energy flows examined are both large scale (heating systems) and small scale (choices among appliances).
