Enlightening and educational.......2007-07-30

Two sisters with two related stories - the book is not difficult to read, and the stories are eye-opening. Reminds me how thankful I am to have been born and raised in a free society, able to go where I want whenever I want, get an education, have a career (or not ... but I at least have the opportunity).

I can't believe someone considered Sulima to be "pampered" ... I did not get that impression. Yes, abuse of women also happens here in the US, so some of her experiences are not unique in that sense - but the pressure from her family to stay with her abusive husband was reflective of the culture and was clearly not good for Sulima. I just think of her technical talent and skill that was not allowed to grow to full potential - society's loss in the long run... how many other women are also derailed like that.

Hala's story shows how truly oppressive to women life under the Taliban was, something I did not realize at the time.

I am glad that both women were able to leave Afganistan, and I hope they are thriving in the US. I only hope the situation for women in Afganistan and in other similar cultures improves instead of worsening in the future.

A glimpse into two horrific lives.......2005-10-04

I read a negative review on here, that I was unhappy to see. This book focuses on "Salima" and "Hala" two Afghani sisters, both opressed by different wars and regimes at different times in Afghanistan. They are 16 years apart. Reading that Salima had a "pampered life" in one of the reviews was quite disturbing to me. Considering that she fought for women's rights underground in a country that supressed them, that she was house bound and beat by an abusive father, Locked into her room and then threatened with guns by her brother, I would hardly call this a "pampered life". She continued to risk for the women she served. Later the book focuses on her horribly physical abusive relationship with her husband. This is also part of the culture, where it is considered "okay" to beat a woman. Her heroism and story was amazing.
Hala, 16 years younger suffered a completely different type of abuse, under the mujaheedin and then the rule of the Taliban. After being beat and her life threatened she had to flee and claim political assylum in the United States. This book was so heart felt and thought provoking, that for two nights I have stayed up until 4 in the morning reading. I say it is a "must read".

psychologically astute and culturally enlightening.......2005-07-20

I disagree with the last reviewer. I feel that when I read BEHIND THE BURQA, I got an amazing glimpse into Afghan culture. The story went well beyond the individual circumstances of the two sisters but encompassed an entire timeline of Afghan history since the 1950s and also a great deal about Afghan society, practices, customs and beliefs. Hala's story was even more shocking because she was oppressed in our own country! I am sad that the last reviewer didn't understand the true meaning of the book, and its real message. I highly recommend this book as both a great read (lots of others have said this and I totally agree) and as an important educational experience.

I can't understand how this book got such excellent ratings as presented under the guise of Taliban oppression. The older sister, Sulima, was extremely pampered and spoiled by her bizarre father. She seems to have lacked for anything she wanted. Her story is really one about becoming an abused wife. Her unhappy story doesn't relate to her culture as much as her particular circumstances. Abuse of this sort is present within every culture. It is a story about misery, just as all abuse stories are. Her sister, Hala, younger by 20 years has relayed a bit more interesting story, but it takes up less than one third of the book. She touches on the upheavals that led to the ultimate Taliban rule as seen from her exceedingly narrow point of view. Neither of the sisters seems very politically astute. Apparently they lack the erudition to give them a real worldview. Needless to say I was disappointed since I was looking for a book on Afghani culture from a more objective viewpoint. The only thing I gave it stars for is Hala's story of her experiences in detention centers after coming into the US under asylum. After 9/11 we need to be careful about who we let into our country, but I was surprised that detainees were treated like prisoners. After reading "Mayada, Daughter of Iraq", I am sorry to say that Hala's experiences as a prisoner in the US are almost laughable

this is an absolute must read for anyone who is interested in human rights, womens rights, humanity, suppression, faith, courage, and biographies. this book applies to anyone and everyone as we are all human beings and many of us do not know the oppression and suffering of many people outside our own little world. the book is divided in two. the first half is sulimas story, the second half is halas story and both will have you reading straight through without pause. through all the horrific experiences they have been through, in the end they find some peace after long lives of suffering and oppression, whether at the hands of family, society, or culture. a wonderful example of how to keep pushing and not give up. i abolutely recommend this to all who will be appalled at what these two ladies have gone through. this book will make you want to take action, and has recommmendations at the back for ways of doing so.

This is a beautiful book, richly illustrated, so much that it seems at first glance like it belongs in the category of "coffee table" books, with nice pictures but shallow detail. Not so. The illustrations are magnificently assembled and well presented, but they accompany masterful information content. The social, political, and technological backgrounds in which the galley and galleon (and their contemporaries, the carrack, caravel, nau, etc., and successor, the ship of the line) arose and drove their evolution are set out. Examination of naval gun technology, a driving force in this progression, is here. History outside of the famous Mediterranean and English Channel scenes are here: the incursion of the Portuguese into the Indian Ocean, and the campaigns of Korea's great Yi Sun-shin. The brief episode of the Chinese navigations is mentioned, but only briefly, probably because the Chinese fought no serious naval battles and established no lasting maritime empire before their politics stifled and suppressed their fleet. For a view of naval power up to the coming of age of the northern European nation-states, this is a choice work.

A thorough and very professional work........2002-03-10

The first time ever I saw a cannon underwater was in Northern Ireland in 1976. At the time, I thought I was looking at something that would have archaeologists jumping to for joy, but it was later dismissed as an old iron demi-culverin of no importance. The following year, however, I was asked to help recover the front 2 feet of a bronze weapon discovered off Gibraltar. It later turned out that an incoming cannonball had hit this cannon at a time when it was hot from repeated use - thus causing it to break. Only last year I was visiting St. Paul Island in Nova Scotia where we came across several remnants from early vessels - including cannon and a large pile of cannonballs.

It is, therefore, with a little experience (and I do mean "little.") but plenty of interest in such matters that I took delivery of "Galleons and Galleys" by John F. Guilmartin - published by Cassell & Co - to be released for general sale on 18 February 2002.

Professor John Guilmartin is a leading authority on military and maritime history specialising on the 16th and 17th Centuries. Whilst many would describe the turn of the 20th Century as a time of revolution in terms of warfare at sea, historians like Guilmartin know how such radical changes happened in an earlier age - albeit on a different scale, at the turn of the 16th Century.

Galleons and Galleys is a hardback book measuring 10½in x 8in and packed with over 220 pages of fascinating historical detail essential to anyone with an interest in this period of maritime history. Beginning with an introduction which explains the age of the Galleon and Galley, Guilmartin then takes the reader on a journey which incorporates Warfare at Sea 1300-1453, Weapons of War 1300-1650, the evolution of European sailing ships - such as the Caravel and Carrack, to the development of the War Galley right through to the heyday of the supreme Galleon.

In a thorough and very professional piece of work, the author includes all the peripheral information such as; Warfare at sea before Gunpowder, World Trade and the emergence of major maritime powers, the gunpowder revolution and the development of naval ordnance, the rise of Swedish sea power, strategies and tactics of the day, Anglo-French confrontations and Anglo-Spanish rivalry - thus giving as complete a portrayal of the subject as one could hope to find.

With numerous famous paintings and portraits reproduced alongside line drawings of everything from the various types of ship to a description of the mould used for making cannon, this is indeed a scholarly work made all the more important because it is so easy to read and follow.

As a result, the countries of Europe spread their influence across the globe and made the world we live in today. But the galleons which carried black powder and European hegemony across the seas did not spring like Athena, full blown from the brow of Zeus. They evolved from oar-driven galleys as a result of a combination of technical and historical factors which historian John F. Guilmartin examines in his latest work, Galleons and Galleys. In concise analytical chapters interspersed with case studies, he traces the history of ships and gunpowder across 350 years from the mid-Atlantic to the South China Sea. I enjoyed the way Professor Guilmartin (Ohio State University) developed his thesis, and I learned a lot about obscure actions like the War of Chioggia and Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea.

The West Highland Galley lives again........2006-01-13

This book is a great cornucopia of information on the Scottish Long ships, Birlinns or Galleys. I love the history of the Scottish Isles and especially the MacDonalds. This book helps explain the origin and history of the once great and common Galleys around the Isles. They were a power to be reckoned with yet also a source of livelihood. Denis Rixson has divided the book into two parts: The first is the history starting with the development and rise to power of the Norwegian or Viking craft and then through the Mediaeval period through the Middle ages and finally to the Decline and Demise. The author explains the manning, numbers and sizes of the different craft and some of the historical battles. In part II the Evidence is given. The Carved stones, heraldic devices, evidence in language and literary sources and basic boat building and navigation seen today. It is amazing that not a single Highland Galley exists today. Only the replica "Aileach" built recently using the resources of today. An amazing story that has just begun to be told.

Rixon's book is a MUST for Gaelic/medieval historians........1999-07-01

Rixon is a no-nonsense historian who conducted impeccable research for this excellent book. The history of the highland galley has received very little attention from historians and Rixon uses the minimal evidence we have to hammer out a scholarly, yet interestingly readable book. This is a well written piece of work and will serve as a primary source for future work on the subject.

My only critic is that many of Rixon's "conclusions" seem to be biased toward Viking superiority and a minimization of possible contributions made by the "gael-gall" clans, namely the island warrior-prince known as Somerled MacGilbride. He stays responsibly loyal to historical method (as he should), however one must entertain the historical "possibilities" of the contributions made by Clan Donald tradition, such as the hinged rudder design attributed to Somerled (he did defeat the Viking longships of Godred Crovan with his highland galleys in 1156). The importance and significance of the galley as an instrument of the Lordship of the Isles could also have received more attention.

A Love Letter To America.......2006-05-18

When I left England to live in the United States for one year last August, there was only one book I took with me - Alistair Cooke's `Letter From America'. What else could I have taken? Cooke saw into America like no other Brit (or no other non-American, for that matter).

Starting at the mid 1940s, the book winds its way through post-war America nearly right up until the authors death in 2004, picking out the best of his weekly broadcasts. The subject matters range from politics, history, current affairs, entertainment and the topics from the New England fall, jazz, Robert Kennedy's assassination and O.J Simpson.

But it is not the subject matter that makes this book so special (for we already know about most of them anyway) it is none other than Cooke's insight and writing style. The articles flow like the finest novel or poem (which is probably attributed to Cooke's background in theatre). Each time you come back to read the book again it feels as though you are receiving the opinions of a familiar friend, and not some distant journalist.

There are drawbacks. Cooke was often criticised, and quite rightly so, for ignoring the darker side of the American dream. The other possible drawback, depending on your viewpoint, is that Cooke was a committed conservative, especially in the latter half of his career. Many of the final articles from the late 90's and early 00's lament the current position of America and (what he saw as) the sliding standards of journalism. Maybe, but you also can't help feel that he was by this point slightly out of touch.

These minor quibbles, however, cannot undermine Cooke's overall achievement of helping us better understand this important nation, which could be described as love letters to America.

Alistair Cooke's 15 Letter from America broadcasts were heard world-wide and were an institution for close to 60 years. In that time, Cooke - UK born but for most of his life a resident of New York City - sought through his thoughtful pieces to convey the complexity of life, of society and of politics in the United States.

In this collection of essays, organised chronologically, Cooke takes us from post-war America through to mid 2005, and his subject matter ranges from the specific relatively "small" topics (for example McLaren's dogged creation of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park) through to large, world-changing subjects including the Vietnam question and the assassinations of both John and Robert Kennedy. The latter is a riveting account because Cooke was there when it happened and his journalistic and observational skills come through as finely honed, dispassionate yet all the more powerful.

What gives this volume real richness are two things in particular.

First; Cooke has an unfailing grasp of history. In writing each week's snapshot of a changing nation, he manages to contextualise what he sees, and to draw upon both his enormous grasp of history and his unparalled contact with top politicians, writers and artists over 60 years. In today's age of soundbyte editorializing and glib simplifications (history seen through the eyes of Forrest Gump, if you will), Cooke's essays are thoughtful, well researched and highly reasoned. As a reader I'm struck by how prescient his comments are, and I'm also struck at how relevant his thought provoking comments about previous political events resonate in today's unfolding history.

The second facet of this rich gem is Cooke's beautifully crafted writing style. He wrote these essays for radio and perhaps this is why they read so beautifully. In his portrait of Charles Lindbergh, for example, he talks about the man for 500 words - creating a vivid, recognisable picture before he even mentions the name of his subject. In so doing, Cooke furnishes the reader (or listener) with the frisson of a delightful guessing game (he's talking about Lindbergh, right?) that allows us to hear more about the subject matter without letting us backfill the story with our own preconceptions. His humour is delightfully wry, and his ability to choose surprising and sometimes quite earthy quotes from the history makers of the past 60 years provides additional pleasure. Cooke clearly laboured over each and every essay to ensure their seamless recipe of wit, fact and observation.

This volume is a remarkable collection of essays: a format that encourages thoughtful, enjoyable bedside reading. In devouring this marvellous book, you are taken to the heart of a complex nation. An easy 5 stars; I'd add that this book makes an excellent gift, regardless of which way your friends vote.

The Masters at Augusta and the Kentucky Derby too .......2005-06-29

For many years I listened to Alistair Cooke's ' Letters from America'. The calm, erudite voice , the super- civilized tone , the suggestion of great intelligence somehow always promised to provide insight into America that no one else had. The British Tocqueville of the airways who knew more about the Americans than the Americans knew about themselves.
Yet somehow I more often than not felt a certain disappointment in the communications. Reading them without the Cooke tone and pause, without his special emphasis diminishes them further. There is it seems to me a great deal of observation and color , and not enough striving for deep general understanding.
And there is too in the calm of Cooke's tone something strange and distant.The many rich voices of America, its ways of shouting and making itself felt are not transmitted strongly here.
Nonetheless in close to sixty years of reporting there are numerous insights and observations and much that entertains.
I think of Cooke's elegy for his old friend Isaiah Berlin. I think of reports made from all kinds of whistle stops on Presidential campaigns. I think too of his capacity for friendship, and how that does move through these letters and give them a warmer feeling of comraderie.
I think also of Cooke's basic real affection for America, his interest and appreciation of much what is good and beautiful in it.
I think too of how many listeners he delighted with his wit, and dry humor and clear - cut language.
This is a lifetime work of special meaning and value for the many thousands who waited each week for those fifteen minutes of his often most delightful and insightful talk.
