Other Books.......2007-09-03
Not as interesting as Papillon, but that is probably also partly because you know what to expect, and it is also not the same setting. Less smuggling gear up the date, that sort of thing. After the nastiness of a prison island, I suppose this is not that surprising that it does not girp you in the same way.
Banco - Disappointing after the success of "Papillon".......2004-10-24
Usually I'm not very critical about books, but I feel like I have to make an exception. I STRONGLY advise to just read "Papillon" and keep it with that. Papillon is such a strong, adventurous and exciting story that you just want it to continue after you've turned the last page.
The first thing I did after reading Papillon, was going to the bookstore to buy Banco, expecting interesting details about his further life and adventures. Most of all I wondered if he would return to Lali and Zoraïma.
I regret to say that I have never read such a disappointing "sequel" before. Although the life of Henri Charrière is probably more adventurous than most of ours, the story really never gained my attention. The power of "Papillon" was that the story was enormously strong and it had an obvious focus. In "Banco" there isn't a focus at all, it just consists of a bunch of hardly interesting anecdotes. There isn't really ANY decent link between the story from "Papillon" and the life of Charrière as portraied in Banco.
For those who are interested if Charrière returns to lali and Zoraïma, I'll only give the hint that there are probably two lines spent on them in Banco. Let's make it clear, I am a HUGE fan of "Papillon", but that is exactly the reason that I would'nt advise anybody to buy Banco, unless they have sleeping problems.
A Magical Finale.......2004-08-18
didn't papillon leave you wishing he stayed with the pearl diver's in paradise, instead of being tempted back to civilization by its siren song? Well it turns out there is a lot more to this tale than the first book would have you guess, but surely papillon has many adventures before him, and good ones too, if i may be the judge. it seems everyone knows about the first book, because of the movie, and no one ever seems to realize there is more. if you made it this far to read my review, you just got to give banco a read. how papillon comes to peace with himself and his world IS THE STORY! i would rate this book higher than five if i could!
The Evolution of a Man.......2003-07-01
Unlike some of the other reviewers who did not care much for "BANCO", I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Now, I confess not to have yet read "PAPILLON". So, my critique of "BANCO" is not reflective of what "PAPILLON" was about.
"BANCO" takes up from where "PAPILLON" left off. The author has escaped into Venezuela. He is deeply embittered and finds it difficult at first to readjust to life on the outside. He is set on revenge for he feels that he was framed for a crime he did not commit. As a way of working out his anger, the author becomes involved in an elaborate plan to stage a big robbery so that he can not only enrich himself, but also return to Europe and exact his revenge. While set on his plans for revenge, however, the author finds love and peace of mind.
"BANCO" stands as a fine example of what a person is capable of achieving in terms of self-improvement and spiritual renewal. When I finished reading this book, I felt very happy for the author, who had learned to cast aside the anger and rage he had bottled up inside himself during his imprisonment on Devil's Island, and find an inner peace for himself.
'Papillon part deux' disappoints.........2003-04-21
Everyone who reads 'Banco' does so because he/she was completely enthralled with 'Papillon' and are curious as to what happens to Monsieur Charriere. But this reader was foolish enough to think 'Banco' would be as good as 'Papillon'. Sadly, this sequel is a mere shadow of the original.
Why? Firstly, the book is poorly structured. The author bounces around quite a bit leaving discarding characters in its wake. He is also too selective on what he wants to say about his life. For example he does not tell us at all about his French wife even upon returning to France to meet with the rest of his family. And the final fifty pages are an over-blown flashback to his original trial where he claims emphatically that he was framed, perjured against, etc. After so many cries of "I'm innocent, really!!!" I'm beginning to wonder.
Still, overall I do recommend 'Banco' to those who have just finished 'Papillon'. Just don't expect so much and you won't be disappointed.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent wrap up of all his adventures!.......2007-03-01
I love this book! This is all what I expected, because it tells all his adventures after he was able to be free, and how he went back to France, got married... anyway, this is an excellent book! And all his adventures are true stories!

Book Description
In the aftermath of the tragedy of 9/11, journalist, teacher, and peace advocate Samar Jarrah found herself called upon by her small Florida community, as well as impelled from within, to dispel stereotypes of Arabs and Muslims. After three years of speaking to audiences of up to 800 Americansin churches, at events of professional associations and other organizations, and at peace rallies, Ms. Jarrah had a vision. If governments would do nothing to combat misunderstanding between Americans and Arabs, then she would open a direct dialogue between these peoples.
Thus, Arab Voices Speak to American Hearts was conceived. But how? A second inspiration prompted Ms. Jarrah to email a great variety of friends, family, and professional contacts in the U.S. and assemble over 100 questions that Americans wanted to ask Arabs and Muslims. A naturalized American citizen herself since 1994, Jarrah then spent the month of October 2004 in Egypt, Jordan, and Kuwait asking these questions.
The remarkable result is found in these pages. Important themes recur throughout the 12 interviews. First, most of those interviewed liked Americanssome even had relatives married to Americans. Many of those interviewed had studied in America and admired Americans as a friendly and enterprising people. Most of these also admired the American form of government.
Yet nearly all of the interviewees disliked current American polices toward the Middle East, especially those of the Bush administration, as well as long-standing American foreign policy toward the problem of Palestine. These two issues, along with the Iraqi war, mostly angered the Arab men and women interviewed. Yet, viewpoints varied. Some thought that American efforts to bring democracy to the Middle East were good, while others said that democracy in Arab countries could only come from within. Some thought that American troops should remain in Iraq and some did not. One theme flows throughout the bookall those interviewed were delighted to be asked to describe their lives and views to Americansand to ask similar questions of Americans.
Thus, Arab Voices Speak to American Hearts provides a cross-section of Arab society in thoughtas well as in gender, age, and even religion. Of the 4 women and 8 men who speak in the book, ages range from 19 to 66, and 9 are Muslim and 3 Christian. The interviews were conducted randomly. All but one are "average" peopleordinary citizens of their countries, although most are well-educated. One is a well-known woman film director Jarrah's follow-up to Arab Voices Speak will be a book based on the questions that her Arabic interviewees and others in the Arab world wanted to ask the American people directly. Ms. Jarrah also has several other books planned.

A must-read. This book is very important for every American to read. I truly wish there was a follow-up book written since the last elections. This is a thoughtful and enlightening book.
TRUE COLORS.......2006-01-30
How fortunate we are to have someone who is actually ABLE to go to the Middle Eastern countries and initiate candid dialogue with normal (under the circumstances) every day people. Reading this book with an open mind and heart can accomplish nothing but - GOOD - in a country so evidently full of evil, ignorance, chicanery, and greed. Would that this were required reading in every American school. Then perhaps those so blinded or tricked by corporate-based propaganda would open their eyes and see what is right in front of them. If the poor grammar, MISspelling, and illiteracy evidenced in the gutless, negative reviews herein are examples of the typical American - the world is in worse shape than I thought. Be VERY afraid. But at least our illustrious author - is NOT
A Comprehensive Analysis.......2006-01-29
Having worked with Arab and Arab Americans it seems that Samar through her interviews has portrayed the most realistic representation of Arab opinions I have seen from an American author. The diveristy of Arab perspectives, and the commonalities of American and Arab feelings have been very well covered. The idea of dialogue for understanding is so simple yet we still rely on our public leaders to do the learning for us. This book is a great first step for any American to begin understanding who this culture is, that we often times choose to call the enemy.

totally adorable...........2001-10-25
This beautifully illustrated book is about a frog that is concerned with his diet. Every page is filled with action and adventure for this little guy who asks the question, "Do you know what I can eat?" He asks every animal that he meets and they send him on a wild goose chase. He starts off by asking a Long-eared bat, who sends him to ask the owl, who sends him to ask the opossums, then the deer, then the egret, and so on. The final animal that the frog talks to is the alligator that tries to eat him. This book was full of action and it introduces the young reader to the different types of animals that can be found in the Okefenokee Swamp. Another book that I had to read repeatedly to my daughter.
Fun Filled Educational Frog Tale.......2000-07-17
School age children will be introduced to obscure Okefenokee Swamp animals and their diets, as they travel through lush swamplands with "The Wide-Mouthed Frog". Young & old readers will be enchanted with this magnificent tale and its surprise ending.

Got this for a Gator fan "mom-to-be" as part of a shower gift. Big hit!

/Deep in the Swamp/ is comprised of two parts. In the first part, charming rhymes introduce young children to the flora and fauna of a swamp. Each animal has a different number of babies, which allows children to practice counting as they move through the book. The second part is comprised of more expository discussions of the animals and plants from the first part, which should keep the attention of older children. The whole book is beautifully illustrated and captivated my two-year old.

Customer Reviews:
This is really a nature photography book, not an art book........2006-11-27
Okefenokee by Lucian Niemeyer (164 pages) contains about 115 nature photographs and about 15 photos of people or of swamp dwellings. There are at least two photographs of artistic note. The photo on page 24 features an egret in the middle with a dramatic cypress to one side, its trunk resembling a swirling woman's dress. The photo on page 30 shows the exquisite greens of foliage, reddish browns of a row of cypress, and the deep forest blues of the water.
Nearly all of the photos in the Okefenokee book are straight nature photography, with little attempt at doing "art." Many of the photos are close-ups of plants and insects, for those interested in that sort of thing. The reproductions are a bit too large, resulting a lack of quality and focus in some of the images. The camera's aperture was too wide in some of the photos, again result in deterioration of focus. For example, an out-of-focus twig ruins the alligator photo on page 120, while out-of-focus foreground foliage ruins one or two other photos. The author seems to believe that there is some virtue to taking alligator photographs in the wild (where the pictures quality will usually be poor because of the difficulty of getting close to the animal, that is, because of intervening branches, and lack of depth of field). This type of virtue, arguably, does not even exist. The author should have taken the alligator photographs in a controlled natural preserve, or in a zoo featuring a natural-looking habitat (especially for close-ups of an alligator head, for example).
All of the photos are in brilliant color, and none of these has a monochromatic quality. TWO STARS as an "art book." But perhaps FOUR STARS as a "nature book."
The Okefenokee swamp book might be contrasted with the following Atchfalaya swamp book. Seasons of Light by Greg Guirard is a 142 page hardcover book. It contains about 70 nature photographs, which are mostly medium range photographs of the Atchafalaya Swamp, and about 20 photographs of fisherman, swamp homes, and the like. Most of the photographs take up the entire page. The emphasis of the nature photographs is on different qualities of light, for example, sifting through cypress trees, the golden morning light, or the fiery evening light. Some of the photographs are truly glorious, for example a picture of an egret in the distant center surrounded by cypress stumps resembling a king's crown (page 16); stripes in the water's surface and hovering mist (page 28); an egret flying low over the water with an angled branch providing a strong anchor point (page 30); and a parallel array of four tree trunks with an array of parallel sunrays (page 33). The colors in all of the photographs are of a subdued quality, and the color tends to be monochromatic. The artist, Greg Guirard, does a good job at developing the subject matter, and refrains from hopping from topic to topic. Developing the topic means, for example, showing the same scene in early morning and also at twilight, or showing the same scene during a wet season and also during a dry season. FIVE STARS for Seasons of Light.
