Washington Post correspondent and TV commentator Juan Williams has produced an illuminating look at a true giant of 20th-century American politics. Williams retells the story of Thurgood Marshall's successful desegregation of public schools in the U.S. with his victory in the case of Brown v. Board of Education, followed by his appointment to the Supreme Court in 1967 for a 24-year term. But he also recounts how W.E.B. Du Bois, then the head of the NAACP, gave a cold shoulder to the younger Marshall (who eventually helped oust Du Bois from the organization), and describes the tug of war between Marshall and FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, as well as the mind games Lyndon Johnson played on Marshall before nominating him for the Supreme Court. Readers also learn about Marshall's relationship with his replacement, Clarence Thomas, which was surprisingly civil given their contrary views on affirmative action. Williams has captured many examples of Thurgood Marshall's heroism and humanity in this comprehensive yet readable biography of a complex, combative, and courageous civil rights figure. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars "Reads Like Fiction".......2007-04-30

As a review on the back cover states, this book truly "reads like fiction." It gives a fascinating perspective of his life, and although I've read other technical biographies and his opinions, lectures and decisions, I would recommend this as a "first read" for anyone studying Thurgood. You feel as if you know Thurgood after reading this, and knowing his personal background helps you understand his professional background. His role in black freedom is no less than that of Martin Luther King's. (And quite frankly I think he should be revered as such.) The realities of black history nauseate me, and I can't comprehend how people historically treated blacks -- but Thurgood fought, and he fought legally and intelligently. Our children need to learn more about Thurgood and his overcoming adversity and changing the history of our country.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Infomative Read.......2005-02-09

As a white man from the deep south, it boggles my mind how a totally free republic could twist the best Constitution ever written to deny a class of people their freedom. Civil right, the Vietnam war, the 1960's in general fascinate me.

Mr. Williams book is particularly good at setting up how Justice Marshall came to his way of thinking. He learned early on how to play the game in the other man's (whites) territory. If you want to know how hard it was to operate during these times, with the threats and bigotry, I suggest this book. I think it is paramount for the younger people in today's society to understand the severity of the risk and opposition that people like Justice Marshall had to deal with. I think it would make them realize that even though progress still needs to be made, these individuals put their lives on the line to advance society to where it is today.

4 out of 5 stars An Illuminating Read about an Imporant Historical Figure.......2005-02-09

Juan Williams' biography of Thurgood Marshall is a worthwhile read. Williams has a great sense of the dramatic story in this man's life and he firmly sets him in the historical context of a nation in turmoil. I went away from this book with a better understanding of Marshall's life, personality and importance in American History. Williams also does a very good job with contrasting Marshall's social and political opinions with those of civil rights leaders in the 60s and 70s, with whom he occasionally butted heads. Williams paints him as the feisty individual that he was but he also does not sugar coat his flaws and mistakes. For me, the most interesting aspects of the autobiography were the accounts of Marshall's trials and travels with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and his inexhaustible energy to confront the laws of the times. If you have any interest in learning about this man and his place both in history and in the Civil Rights Movement, defintely pick up this worthwhile book.

2 out of 5 stars Very tedious, superficial.......2004-03-07

Maybe its unfair that I read this book after reading the spectacular autobiography of John Lewis, Walking in the Wind. However, I found that this book was too detached from the man. I did not come away from this book with a better understanding of this man than I did before hand. Thurgood Marshall is one of the most important people of 20th century America but you don't see why in this book.

The major problem with this book is its writing style which makes reading this book tedious. I found myself bored by page 200. Also, I believe the Brown decision is given 20 pages and his solcitor general appointment is given more.

If you want to learn more about this guy, study the cases of the era. Sweatt v. painter, Brown of course, etc. Marshall's personal life really is irrelevant towards understanding this man's accomplishments. I would not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible account of an amazing life.......2001-08-25

This is one of the most wonderful books I ever read. Thurgood Marshall is one of the most dynamic figures of the Civil Rights Movement. Williams not only gives an excellent and engaging account of Marshall's life, he represents the time in a manner that easily imagined. I was not alive during this period of time, but reading Williams' book made me feel as though I had experienced it. So often, when an author truly likes and admires his subject, the work that results is biased and not well-rounded. You can tell when you are reading something that is one-sided and too tributory to be accurate. Williams' admiration for this great man shines through in his book; however, it is by no means a song to Marshall. Williams' is fair in his dedication to not only Marshall's courage and brilliance, but also his fallibility and humanity. This is what brings the history to life. When you finish reading this book, you will feel as though you know Thurgood Marshall.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Manners marries the Military!.......2005-10-01

This book may be dated, however who says we have to live like pack animals? I think we should go back to the time where manners and politness are the standard, not the snickered-at. I read some parts of this book out loud to my husband; Air Force active duty for 15 years, and there were things that he learned.

I think it would be a nice bridal shower gift for the first-time Air Force wife.

4 out of 5 stars Trailer trash review.......2004-06-11

First let me please start off with addressing the person from Georgia who wrote that horrible review. That particular person paints the picture of swapping of sex, a broken down rank structure, and no special social functions. I don't know if you or your spouse are in the service, but I am guessing you haven't been in long, or haven't accomplished much along the way. My husband has been in the service for 8 years, and I have been married to him for 3. When we decided to get married, he bought this book for me, and I tore through it. I found it very helpful and informing. Through the past 3 years, I have been to half a dozen black tie and other formal ceremonies and parties, not to mention many other functions. I don't know what life you have headed into, but the military i know is still very reliant on rank structure and propriaties. I would recommend this book to any military spouse, new or old. In fact, I am going to a military wedding this weekend, and I found this website for the purpose of finding another copy of this book for the bride! 4 stars!Air Force on an Army base-we are special!

4 out of 5 stars Wish I had been given this book long ago!!!!!.......2004-01-04

In my opinion, I am not sure why there are some readers that would give this book less than 3 stars. Although it may be a bit outdated in a few areas, for the most part It clearly navigates you through all aspects of social functions down to instructing you how to shake hands when meeting people, or even how to be a good neighbor by welcoming a newcomer. I have been married for 9 years to my husband AND the Air Force and I can not emphasize how many times I have referred to this book. It has proven over the years to be one of the most helpful handbooks to have. Basically it directs you to what is proper in certain situations, and what is considered improper (If you need that pointed out). Also what is expected from the military wife which is why I equal this to a Emily Post book for the military spouse. I can honestly say the only reason the reviewers below were negative is that they could not relate to the book itself. My husband has held various positions including two commands and numerous headquarter jobs. That has left me with , trying to meet expectations in entertaning by hosting coffees, meeting general officers,or attending a ball. My position is that while many things change, manners and rank structure stay the same. Believe me its not a free for all!

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful for serious military spouses!.......2002-07-30

This book is a very useful resource for serious military spouses of members of all ranks. It is a bit outdated, but overall is a great reference, especially if your spouse does a joint staff tour. The highly critical reviews I've read about this book are probably from folks who are not military career people. For the new spouse, it's a really good way to learn acronyms and understand some basic protocol. So if you are "lifers", you'll appreciate it! My husband is a Lt Col and I have used this book as a reference for several years now.

3 out of 5 stars Academy graduate and career officer.......2002-01-01

I'm not sure which was funnier to read: this book or the "old age" review. Crossley's guide is written for a time gone by, when the military existed as a good-ol'-boys fraternity funded by the taxpaying public, and women "attached" to the military were wives -- expected to stay at home, rear offspring, and cater to their husbands' every whim. Fortunately, those days of rampant sexism, racism, and misogynism have been replaced by a military concerned with fighting and winning wars versus holding "proper" social functions. "Social etiquette" and the attendant extravagance have, quite appropriately, been replaced with a get-down-to-business attitude tailored to the military mission. Nonetheless, this book is a great read to see how far we've come, but at the same time a frightening example of how some would have us turn back the clock. The book's social implications far, far outstrip any of its nominally helpful information about military life (I haven't found any in the book, yet, but there might be some there).

    Book Description

When Stella Suberman wrote her first memoir, The Jew Store, at the age of seventy-six, she was widely praised for shedding light on a forgotten piece of American history--Jewish life in the rural South. In her new memoir, Suberman reveals yet another overlooked aspect of America's past--the domestic side of war.

Her story begins in the Miami Beach she grew up in, when hotel signs boasted "Always a View, Never a Jew" and where a passenger ship lingered just off shore carrying hundreds of European Jews hoping for--but never finding--sanctuary. It was a time of innocence, before that war in Europe became our war.

Stella was nineteen when America entered the fighting. By the time she was twenty-three, the war was over. She married Jack Suberman the week he enlisted and set out alone to join him in California. She was kicked off trains to make room for soldiers, her luggage was stolen, she was arrested for soliciting, but she was determined to follow her husband. And she did so for the next four years as he was sent from air base to air base, first training to be a bombardier and then training others. It wasn't until he was sent overseas to fly combat missions that she finally went back home to wait, as did so many other soldier's wives.

This remarkable memoir renders a double understanding of war--of how it matured a young woman and how it matured a country. By personalizing the patriotism of the 1940s, Stella Suberman's story becomes the story of all military wives and serves as a powerful reminder of how differently many Americans feel about war sixty years later.

5 out of 5 stars A young wife learns of the world.......2006-06-01

I read The Jew Store and was actually looking to see if she had written another book. Thankfully, she did! I read this before getting married, which turned out to be an appropriate time. This was a transistory period for the writer becoming of age, married and realizing how different her image of people were in comparison to the likeness all people share. I have used this in my classes with high school age children.

She has a gentle way of making us laugh at her mistakes and cry at her pain and teaching us that it is okay if we have not gotten to perfect at the ripe age of 20-something, as long as we are still trying to attain it.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Piece of WWII History.......2005-02-27

When It Was Our War is so informative. It describes many aspects of WWII and the American culture at that time. It is extremely enjoyable because the author adds a humanistic aspect by telling her own story of following her husband around the country as he trains to become a bombardier, and by describing the people she meets along the way.
People come in and out of Stella's life, and some make a great impact on her. Truths are revealed and her eyes are opened. Suberman's whole perception of the world changes.
War has a way of making people come face to face with reality. Suberman's writing is a window into the realities of WWII, and what was happening at the home front. She draws vivid pictures of the time period.
I was captivated by how touchingly personal she got when she described the persevering love her and her husband had for each other. It didn't matter that they were far apart. It didn't matter what was happening in their lives. Their love never faltered.

5 out of 5 stars If you haven't discovered the GEM.......2004-10-20

that is Stella Suberman, you must read her books. Absolutely delightful writer--the kind of person you wish was a personal friend. Flawless, seamless, writing that will wrap you into her narratives. Glorious.

    5 out of 5 stars Hubba Hubba!!!.......2004-09-02

Earlier reviews are all excellent! Stella Suberman and her family were prolific letter-writers; their contemporary correspondence obviously provided vivid details linking her journey into marriage and her growing insights into the social patterns existing in our country to her account. Suberman's book provides a vivid historic backdrop of American lives and attitudes during the war. She is unflinching in her honesty! I recommend this book for anyone interested in the home front, women's history, or vivid pictures of how Americans viewed the war, including reactions to the Doolittle raids, the songs sung, the experience of traveling by train and car. It is an incredible social history. And, as the guys said when a pretty girl walked by,''HUBBA HUBBA!"

5 out of 5 stars I entered the world of World War II.......2004-03-25

For all of us who have wondered how Americans dealt with World War II, this is a book that tells all. It is an unusual book in that nothing is sacred. It is not just a feel-good Greatest Generation book (even though it is written by someone from that generation), but one that recounts with penetrating clarity the the good things and the bad. There is a surprising amount of actual war activity information included along with a timeline that is fascinating. There is also much that is light-hearted - the songs, the reunitings, and so forth -that make the book warm and inviting. I highly recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Publisher's Information:.......2003-12-27

    About the Book:

"A retrospective look at Anita Hamilton's late husband's outstanding career in the Air Force during the fifties and sixties. Recounts in depth the inner workings of a military family, from the vantage point of the wife, who was responsible for raising the children and 'keeping the home fires burning' during the long combat tours and frequent temporary absences of the husband and father. Her experiences, from the first efforts to solo up to the day-to-day dangers and emergencies encountered in proficiency flying and even combat. This spunky lady takes it all in stride and seems to have thrived on the vagabond lifestyle imposed upon her. Reveling in the newfound joys of traveling, both stateside and abroad, this family survived the inevitable hardships and disadvantages of their Gypsy life-style - not only survived them, but turned them into growing experiences. Shows how, although admittedly difficult, it is not impossible to maintain one's integrity and moral standards in a worldly career field, and how, far from causing them to lose their faith in God, they were actually made stronger by their experiences."

    From the Jacket:

"Anita Hamilton credits her twenty years as an Air Force wife for opening her eyes to worlds beyond her own comfort zone. Married for forty-nine years to the late Ike Hamilton, she gamely accepted the challenges his vagabond lifestyle imposed upon her, living in seven states--some multiple times--and two foreign countries. A firm believer in the mantra 'Freedom Isn't Free,' she saw her husband, an Air Force fighter pilot, participate in two combat tours, while she maintained the family home."

          5 out of 5 stars Marci ý The Patience of a Saint!.......2002-10-30

The book is called "Marci: Tale of an Air Force Wife" but that barely scratches the surface. The title character, Marci, tells us her life story in the form of a very lengthy flashback that spans the middle two-thirds of the book. She has so many trials and tribulations in her childhood that it's hard to believe she didn't run away from home and spend the remainder of her life lamenting her "dysfunctional" childhood surroundings!

Anyone like me, who grew up in greater Boston, will appreciate Marci's working class upbringing in Lynn, Massachusetts. This is not the New England of Boston Brahmins who have high tea at the Parker House. Marci begins life in an aging city populated by blue collar workers at shoe factories and the General Electric ship yards. The Boston of Bruins fans who eat Fenway Franks with B&M beans every Saturday night. In this hardscrabble environment, the always optimistic Marci stands out in contrast as a 20th Century Pollyanna.

Always fun-loving, Marci enjoys going to dances at military bases and marries an Air Force sergeant, hence the title. We follow her to bases in England, New Jersey, and Japan.

But beneath the perfect world of an Air Force wife raising four children is a dark secret. This will have to remain a surprise, since no one wants the ending of their book spoiled!

As mentioned, much of the book is a flashback. When the book opens, Marci is widowed and working for U.S. Customs on assignment at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, still looking for the love of her life. She meets a man on a train while touring Japan and they strike up a series of conversations, during which Marci tells the man (and us) the awful secrets of her life.

Marci is not high literature. It is written in a simple, unpretentious, easy-to-read style.

Though it's appeal is probably mainly for women (don't be surprised to see Marci eventually turn up as a movie on the Lifetime Network), anyone with a shred of sensitivity will find the title character endearing.

I'm giving Marci to all of the women in my life who love romance novels.

Awesome book is a must read if more people in DC thought this way we would still be a republic instead of on our way of being a socialist government like the old USSR

5 out of 5 stars Do the Right Thing - Read This Book!.......2002-10-20

This book is a compilation of columns by America's strongest voice of liberty, Dr. Walter E. Williams. In this book Dr. Williams offers his common sense, freedom-loving take on the vital issues of the day. He fearlessly confronts the many liberal fallacies responsible for eroding our precious liberties. A must read for anyone wanting to expand their base of knowledge and unafraid to confront stark truths. A great antidote to the toxic political propaganda many of our universities dispense. And, a great book for Blacks brave enough to challenge the ethnic grievance industry (Jackson-Sharpton).

This is a collection of Prof. Walter Williams's newspaper columns. It's in his usual plainspoken, tough minded style. A must for the Prof. Williams fan.

5 out of 5 stars He's the best at what he does........1999-12-19

Over the past 15 years I have read numerous works by many libertarian writers. Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Ayn Rand, Charles Murray, P.J. O'Rourke, Dave Barry, Henry Hazlitt, F.A. Hayek, Ludwig Von Mises, Milton Friedman, Murray Rothbard, Julian Simon, and many others. Walter Williams is my definite favorite libertarian writer. He tells the plain, simple truth in a way that is very easy to understand. He presents the facts in such a way that only a fool could read him and then walk away without becoming a libertarian. This book is pretty much on par with his others. Which is to say, it is excellent. Mr Williams is a true supporter of individual liberty, freedom, private property rights, and strict limits on the size of government. Good for him!

                5 out of 5 stars Superb Essays.......1999-07-12

Everything Walter Williams writes is worth reading. His amazing capacity to convey economic truths combines with his wisdom, humor, eloquence, and keen powers of observation to make him one of America's top pundits. Williams is that rare bird: a truly courageous pundit who is also a genuine scholar.

                Book Description

The rapidly disappearing wetlands that once spread so abundantly across the American continent serve an essential and irreplaceable ecological function. Yet for centuries, Americans have viewed them with disdain. Beginning with the first European settlers, we have thought of them as sinkholes of disease and death, as landscapes that were worse than useless unless they could be drained, filled, paved or otherwise "improved." As neither dry land, which can be owned and controlled by individuals, nor bodies of water, which are considered a public resource, wetlands have in recent years been at the center of controversy over issues of environmental protection and property rights.

The confusion and contention that surround wetland issues today are the products of a long and convoluted history. In Discovering the Unknown Landscape, Anne Vileisis presents a fascinating look at that history, exploring how Americans have thought about and used wetlands from Colonial times through the present day. She discusses the many factors that influence patterns of land use-ideology, economics, law, perception, art-and examines the complicated interactions among those factors that have resulted in our contemporary landscape. As well as chronicling the march of destruction, she considers our seemingly contradictory tradition of appreciating wetlands: artistic and literary representations, conservation during the Progressive Era, and recent legislation aimed at slowing or stopping losses.

Discovering the Unknown Landscape is an intriguing synthesis of social and environmental history, and a valuable examination of how cultural attitudes shape the physical world that surrounds us. It provides important context to current debates, and clearly illustrates the stark contrast between centuries of beliefs and policies and recent attempts to turn those longstanding beliefs and policies around. Vileisis's clear and engaging prose provides a new and compelling understanding of modern-day environmental conflicts.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific historical overview of wetlands..........1998-08-24

This is a great primer for anyone interested in the history of our wetland ecosystems- from armchair ecologists to the PhDs. It helped me enormously in understanding how our wetlands came to be what they are today. Vileisis' style is engaging and clear, making this a real page turner. I didn't want to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for those interested in wetland protection.......1998-02-06

We've all heard the statistics. As Vileisis puts it, "Overall, 221 million acres of wetlands once graced our nation's lower forty-eight states with a rich mosaic of life. More than half of these important landscapes no longer exist." This book traces a history of loss and chronicles the changing attitudes of the settlers from Europe and their descendants about wetlands. Caught up as we frequently are in controversies about how to identify wetlands, how to preserve them and mitigate their loss, this book provides a long perspective and calls for no less than a change in culture if we are to stop the inexorable downward trend.

Vileisis describes how, to the first European settlers, what we call wetlands were "dismal swamps," linked by images such as Pilgrim Progress' "slough of despond" to whatever is dark and evil. Later wetlands represented opportunity: drain them and make a lot of money, whether selling real estate in Florida or planting more and more crops.

This is more than a book about wetlands, however. It is a history of water policy in the United States. It tells the history of the great American institutions that grew up to deal with wetlands issues: the Soil Conservation Service, the U.S. Corps of Army Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and others. She also tells of the federal legislation that shapes our current ways of dealing with wetlands; how these laws got passed and how they have been enforced. Anyone attempting to understand the changing role of the Corp of Engineers in wetland protection, for example, should read this book.

The book is also gracefully written and filled with great stories about entrepreneurs and dreamers who saw opportunities in controlling the rivers and draining the swamps, and how their plans almost always went awry. It also tells of those who helped change the cultural attitude toward wetlands, people like Mrs. Augustus Hemenway of Boston, who, with William Brewster, founded the Audubon Society and groups like Ducks Unlimited, who saw dramatic decreases of wildlife in their favorite hunting areas. When scientists began to understand the values of wetlands in the early 20th century, long-entrenched attitudes began to change.

Vileisis points to the essential difficulty for understanding and dealing with wetlands: land is property, and our thinking is guided by concepts of "property rights." The waters of the country, on the other hand, have been understood as belonging to all of us. But wetlands are both land -- we can put a fence around it -- and water -- it flows and knows no boundaries. This is the key to why it has been so hard to shape public policy and attitudes about wetlands. As Vileisis puts it, "Americans were stuck somewhere between the conventional view of wetlands as property and the ecological view of wetlands as a life-support system."

Vileisis takes heart from the resiliency of nature, but in her closing chapter she says, "...while there have been changes in attitudes, policies, and laws, and marked decrease in the rate of wetlands loss, the destruction of wetlands continues because powerful interests cling to the status quo that calculates its profits in the ledger of short-term private gain with little concern for the common good." For those of us who work to change this cultural attitude, this book extends our sense of interconnectedness to those who lived before us. Vileisis says, "Informed by history, we can remember the trade-offs already made and turn away from the mistakes and misunderstandings of a time when we knew no better."
