Book Description
In the annals of sports, no individual rivalry matches the intensity, longevity, and emotional resonance of the one between two extraordinary women: Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.
Over sixteen years, Evert and Navratilova met on the tennis court a record eighty times—sixty times in finals. At their first match in Akron, Ohio, in 1973, Chris was an eighteen-year-old star and Martina, two years her junior, was an unknown Czech making her first trip to the United States. It would be two years before Martina finally beat Chris, and another year—after Navratilova had dropped twenty pounds and improved her game—before Evert publicly betrayed her first hint of concern. By then, the women were already friends and sometimes doubles partners, and the colorful story that would captivate the world was under way.
The Rivals is the first book to examine the intertwined journey of these legendary champions, based on extensive interviews with each. Taking readers on and off the courts with vivid, never-before-published material, award-winning sportswriter Johnette Howard shows how Evert and Navratilova came of age during the rambunctious golden age of tennis in the 1970s, and how—together—they redefined women’s athletics during a time of volcanic change in sports and society. Their epic careers unfolded against the backdrop of the fight for Title IX, the gay rights movement, the women's movement and the fall of the iron curtain. Howard draws entertaining, intimate, and myth-shattering portraits of Evert and Navratilova, describing the personal migrations each woman made, and showing how enmeshed their lives became.
Navratilova and Evert’s ability to forge and maintain a friendship during sixteen years of often-cutthroat competition has always provoked wonder and admiration. They were a study in contrasts, a collision of politics and style and looks. Chris was the crowd darling while Martina, her greatest foil, was often cast as the villain. Chris was the imperturbable champion who proved toughness and femininity weren’t mutually exclusive; Martina was portrayed as both emotionally fragile and some fearsome Amazon. Chris’s off-court life was presumed to be bedrock solid, the stuff of Main Street America; Martina’s was derided as outrageous and sometimes chaotic, even during her invincible years. Yet, through it all, the two remained friends who lifted each other to heights that each says she couldn’t have reached without the other.
Women’s tennis now is more popular than ever, thanks in large part to the trailblazing of Evert and Navratilova. A rivalry like theirs, filled with so many grace notes, is unique in sports history.

ICE PRINCESS VS NAVRAT.......2007-04-22
THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK ABOUT THE TENNIS RIVALRY CONCERNING CHRIS EVERT AND MARTINA NAVRATILOVA. THERE MATCHES WERE LEGEND DURING THE 1980'S. THE BOOK COVERS ALOT MORE THAN JUST THIS. IT GIVES A LOOK AT THE PRIVATE LIVES OF CHRISSIE AND MARTINA. CHRISSIE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MARRIED LIFE. MARTINA ADMITTED TO BE BEING GAY AND ALSO DEFECTED FROM HER HOME COUNTRY OF CZECHOLSLOVAKIA TO ESCAPE COMMUNISM. THEY BOTH ARE LEGENDS IN THE TENNIS WORLD AND HELPED THE GROWTH OF TENNIS TO THE VERY POPULAR SPORT IT IS TODAY. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT FOR ALL SPORTS FANS. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB SHOWING US THE HUMAN SIDE OF BOTH RIVALS
Game, Set and Match.......2007-01-20
This book offers an insightful look into the lives of Martina and Chris.
If you're a fan of either you'll enjoy their perspectives individually.
If you're a fan of both...all the better for you. You will read how each supported, coaxed, teased, fought, encouraged and ultimately validated each other and each other's career.
I think this book de-mythologizes much of what we've heard before about Chris and Martina's relationship. At the same time, it re-inforces things we already knew, but adds a little more depth: incredible friends, incredible rivals...A friendship that transcends their rivalry and a rivalry that transcended sport.
A Literary Second Serve.......2006-09-04
In The Rivals, a middling addition to the tennis book industry, Johnette Howard argues that the Evert-Navratilova rivalry both reflected and changed women's tennis and women's role in professional sports. Fair enough. She also portrays the rivals as two intelligent, highly skilled and articulate women whose friendship was tested and strengthened by their on-court competition. Fair enough again. Also, the book is a quick, good read, albeit in the style of a 270 page sports column, where everybody always talks in the present tense. When all that is conceded though, what new perspective or insight does The Rivals bring to the party? In my view, not much, if anything, that couldn't be found by reading the autobiographies of the two champions, which Howard generously cites frequently. As for the writing on tennis here, there is nothing that can come close to John McPhee's classic Levels of the Game in recreating the context, tension, and skill of tennis at the highest levels.
Times Have Changed.......2006-04-20
Given the high octane, big-money state of womens' tennis today, this book is a quaint look back at how things used to be in the 70s and 80s when tennis was more popular, but still much less sophisticated, than today's game.
The writing is high quality. The author spoke with Evert and Navratilova at length, including many of Martina's ex's, but not Jimmy Connors, Evert's most famous flame.
While their rivalry makes great history, watching it unfold was not the drama this book would like to recall it as. Most matches were boringly lopsided, especially when Evert was dominating the early years.
Women's tennis today is much more a game of equals where anything can happen. When Chrissie and Martina ruled, the only question was what time was their final because they were usually in it.
Still, the book pays homage to a nostalgic era, and recounts with great drama the slow build of a female rivalry and friendship for the sports ages.
Great read for tennis fans.......2005-10-03
I loved this book because it reminded me of when I used to actually watch tennis and especially women's tennis. I was in love with Chris Evert and loved the detail that is put into telling her story. I was also surprised at how much I enjoyed the information I learned about Martina. A great read for anyone that grew up watching these two great athletes.

Not worth the paper it was written on!.......1998-09-29
I found this book very dramatic and as a soldier in the SAS very unrealistic. The writer, Leroy Thompson should take a good hard look at himself. Us readers don't want to read fairy tails, we want to hear the facts. An insight into the real life drama's of war from which readers can learn and prepare would be most welcomed.
Book Description
In 1970 the SAS were called in to support the Sultan of Oman's armed forces in their fierce campaign against a communist armed insurrection. This was first and last a war about people. The task in hand was not to obliterate the enemy but to persuade them to join the government's side and at the same time win the support of the civilians of the Jebel Dhofar. This is the gripping story of the part played in the conflict by squadrons of the 22nd Special Air Service Regiment, the first full SAS squadron in the region. Written by the man who commanded that unit and who successfully raised the first bands of Dhofari irregulars to fight for the Sultan, SAS: Operation Storm provides a unique and personal insight into what was to become one of the most successful counter-insurgency campaigns of the 20th century.
Book Description
This riveting history of the formation of Britain’s Special Air Services (SAS)—and its activities through the last battles of World War II—reads like a novel. Written by a distinguished war journalist, it is the first account of the SAS officially sanctioned by the veterans and based on their unique first-hand testimony. More than 60 men who were there at the start provided personal documents on founder David Stirling and the organization he turned into the stuff of legend.

Book Description
From 1963 to 1966 Britain successfully waged a secret war to keep the Federation of Malaya free from domination by Soekarno's Indonesia and by Chinese Communists. At the forefront of the campaign was the SAS, an elite branch of the British army whose essence is secrecy and whose tools are bold initiative, surprise and skill. Working in four man patrols, the SAS teams first befriended the head-hunting border tribes and even trained some of them as an irregular militia force. As the conflict continued, SAS teams went beyond the borders into Indonesia where they tracked down enemy camps, destroyed supply routes and attacked the soldiers in the riverboats. By talking to those who were there, Peter Dickens has recreated what it was really like to fight in the dense jungle and rainforest of Malaysia. In telling this dramatic story, he captures the bravery and relentless pursuit of excellence that make the SAS the elite and prestigious unit it is.

Tough to get thru.......2003-02-08
An interesting topic for SAS fans but this book is as dry as a popcorn you know what. Pictures are grainy and/or poor quality.
Rather disappointing considering who the author's ancestor was (Charles Dickens!)
Recommend this book if you are doing a research paper and need the info anyway you can get it otherwise look for some other excellent SAS books elsewhere.

Book Description
Roy Close's wartime experiences make breathtaking reading. Mobilized in 1939 he became part of the BEF and was fortunate to avoid death or captivity during the German blitzkrieg and escape through Dunkirk. Sent to North Africa, he joined the Paras and, from there, to the SAS. In 1944 he operated behind enemy lines with the Maquis in France, who were in open insurrection against the German occupiers.
The scene then shifts to Holland and the advance through Germany. He witnessed Paris and Berlin in very early post-war years and was part of the Quadripartite Government of the former German capital.

Book Description
This work covers how the British devised techniques for fighting guerrillas and terrorists. It shows how traditional policies were supplemented by lessons from World War II, not least the use of special forces, such as the SOE, SIS and SAS. The role of the Special Air Service is covered in detail. The study reveals how key players in the Foreign Office, Colonial Office, War Office, The Cabinet, the Intelligence Services, Colonial Police, RAF and the Army made the advances that produced methods which are used around the globe to this day.

Book Description
Shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Congress passed a complex, 342-page bill-the USA PATRIOT Act-to help the government fight its war on terrorism. Since the bill was signed on October 26, 2001, the Patriot Act has become the subject of intense controversy. The authors in this anthology present differing views on whether the Patriot Act protects national security, violates civil liberties, and whether it should or should not be expanded.

Book Description
Landscape Ecology and Resource Management bridges the gap between the science of landscape ecology and on-the-ground land and resource management, relating the theory and empirical research within landscape ecology to the practical needs of resource managers. It offers both a conceptual foundation of applicable and operational theory and case-study examples that address ways in which political, economic, and social factors influence the use of landscape ecology and other data-based science around the world.
Contributors focus on links between theory and practice, between small-scale and large-scale, and between humans and nature. Specific linkages examined include:
- landscape patterns and biological reality
- top-down effects and organisms
- the indicator species concept and conservation efforts
- the concept of fitness landscapes and the behavior and distribution of animals
- body mass patterns and wildlife conservation
Chapters feature examples of interactions between people and landscapes in boreal, central, and Mediterranean Europe; northern Australia; and Eastern Africa; along with case studies from central Europe, North America, and South America that show how theory and application can be linked in a variety of situations with varying management constraints.
Landscape Ecology and Resource Management is the first book of its kind to focus on the linkages between the theory of landscape ecology and the practice of resource management, and will play an important role both in advancing landscape ecology as a science and in incorporating its ideas into management efforts.

Considering scientific environmental conservation matters.......2003-03-10
Collaboratively compiled and edited by John A. Bissonette (Research Scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey; Professor in the College of Natural Resources, Utah State University; and head of the Utah Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit) and Ilse Storch (Research Scientist and Lecturer, Weilhenstephan Center of Life Sciences, Techniische Universitat Munchen, Munich Germany; Research Associate, Max Planck Research Center for Ornithology, Radolfzell, Germany; and Chair, IUCN Grouse Specialist Group), Landscape, Ecology And Resource Management: Linking Theory With Practice is a scholarly collection of informed and informative essays by a variety of learned authors and contributors considering scientific environmental conservation matters ranging from landscape theory and population dynamics; to problems with linking scales in the use of indicator species; to the implications of body mass patterns; to connecting landscape management with conservation of Wisconsin grassland birds, and much, much more. Landscape, Ecology And Resource Management is strongly recommended as an invaluable, core addition to Environmental Studies and Resource Management Studies reference collections and reading lists.
