Book Description
"The Long Tail" is a powerful new force in our economy: the rise of the niche. As the cost of reaching consumers drops dramatically, our markets are shifting from a one-size-fits-all model of mass appeal to one of unlimited variety for unique tastes. From supermarket shelves to advertising agencies, the ability to offer vast choice is changing everything, and causing us to rethink where our markets lie and how to get to them. Unlimited selection is revealing truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it, from DVDs at Netflix to songs on iTunes to advertising on Google. However, this is not just a virtue of online marketplaces; it is an example of an entirely new economic model for business, one that is just beginning to show its power. After a century of obsessing over the few products at the head of the demand curve, the new economics of distribution allow us to turn our focus to the many more products in the tail, which collectively can create a new market as big as the one we already know. The Long Tail is really about the economics of abundance. New efficiencies in distribution, manufacturing, and marketing are essentially resetting the definition of whats commercially viable across the board. If the 20th century was about hits, the 21st will be equally about niches.

Good article, stretched out to a padded book.......2007-09-26
This book started off as an article in Wired Magazine, and it was an excellent one. But Anderson must have decided to cash in, because the book doesn't add anything that wasn't covered in the article itself. It's not a complex concept.
Read the article on the Wired website. Then go spend your money on something from a tiny niche market.
One Trick Pony.......2007-09-09
This is one of those books that has one, keen insight and then takes one hundred + pages to say the same thing over and again. The keen point is indeed interesting. It just does not a complete book make. My $.02 !!
Good book for the startup entrepreneur in the 21-century .......2007-08-20
This is an insightful book into the today's world of retail business. Cool examples of how the Internet has leveled the playing field for many small businesses and artist.
Looking at it from the point of view of the producer and not the consumer or the retailer .......2007-08-16
I am not much of a business mind but I think I get the picture here. Instead of twenty percent of the product bringing in eighty percent of the revenue ninety- eight percent of the product is going to bring in all the revenue. Having so much available, and having ready access to it means sales no longer concentrate on a relatively few items. Freedom of choice abounds, niches multiply, Alvin Toffler is happy, future shock is no longer shocking, customization is here forever, and we all can have anything we want as long as we are able to pay for it.
Good. But I think of this in another way. Does this mean that 'value' also will not be centered as we ordinarily center it in the great works, the masterpeices, the few chosen ones? Does it mean our whole conception of valuing cultural goods will change, and a few big things will be less worshipped while many more appreciated? In other words will deTocqueville be happy here because 'equality' is in the saddle and mankind has many little good things, instead of the aristocracy only having a few?
And what does that mean for creators of culture? As a writer can I now happily post my unpublished writings with the thought that perhaps a few will read them, where before none did. In other words a moneyless long- tail is still a long- tail.
I don't know. But I do sense Anderson has hit on to a new truth here which will have all kinds of implications better business people than me will have to see.

Book Description
In October 1985, at age 27, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants--Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes 11 unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?
In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.
Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.
Service with a Smile: Dishing with Danny Meyer
Is the customer always right? According to Danny Meyer, one of America's leading restauranteurs, the answer is no--but "they must always feel heard." Named one of the most influential New Yorkers of 2006 by New York magazine, Meyer, the founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan's most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack, has penned Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality, a business book that reads like food lit and equal part personal memoir. Amazon.com senior editor Brad Thomas Parsons took some time from his daily long-distance day-dreaming of Shake Shack and caught up with the ever-gracious Danny Meyer over e-mail to ask about his new book, the Food Network, his favorite cookbooks, insider tips on dining out, and much more.

Customer Reviews:
Hibbert the Storyteller.......2003-07-01
Perhaps you can't put much stock in my opinion because I am an unrepentant History buff and a long-time fan of Christopher Hibbert, but if you want a quick summer read about a fascinating man of a now almost mythological period in North American history, give this book a try. As I read it, I kept thinking to myself, "Reads like a novel", not only because Wolfe was one of those larger-than-life characters whose short time on earth makes the rest of us look like hapless slackers, but also because a good novel is nothing but an interesting story told well, and no one does it better than the prolific Mr. Hibbert. Sheer enjoyment.
Wolfe WON the War?!?.......2000-08-25
A nice little piece of work that dedicates the majority of it's 208 pages to the details surrounding the decisive Battle on the Plains of Abraham, I enjoyed Mr. Hibbert's book. Although well written, I gave it a lower rating due to an early statement in the book that I just do not believe to be true (although I'm willing to admit I could be wrong). On page 26 the author states that the Swiss mercenary Col. Bouquet of the 60th Royal Americans learned his bush-fighting skills under the tutelage of Robert Rogers. I seriously doubt that. This early dubious statement caused me to doubt the author's research, so the rest of the book was read with some misgivings. I also had a hard time buying the title of Wolfe as the man who won the war. From the author's own statements I might bestow this same title on Brig. Monckton, or Admiral Saunders. All in all an enjoyable book though.
wolfe at quebec.......1999-12-22
This is a outstanding book on General James Wolfe and his victory over the French General Montcalm at Quebec. After you read the book you will understand how this battle played a large part in shaping the destiny of this continent. Would their have been a American Revolution if the British lost the battle and the war? If you want to know about this great battle and a great commander who was o.k.- an ill, ambitious, neurotic, mother-riden greneral. But one who knows how to win. Read this book.

Book Description
A fascinating profile of two generals who shaped history.
In 1759, after the battle on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec City, the English general James Wolfe and the French general, Louis-Joseph Montcalm lay mortally wounded, each hit by a sniper's bullet. Neither could know that the outcome on the Plains of Abraham would shape the history of both the United States and Canada.
After researching letters and journals and reading dozens of books, Joy Carroll has written a compelling account of the lives and times of the two generals which is both intimate and entertaining while maintaining the highest standards of historical accuracy. The generals shed their stuffy textbook images and emerge as real people who were brave, ambitious and colorful and coped with trials that would have broken the spirits of lesser men.
Wolfe and Montcalm is packed with fascinating accounts of the generals' mothers, lovers, friends, enemies, kings and moments of consuming passion, and the events that led up to the battle that changed the course of history. Find out what these men were really like. Read the true story of how they ended up in the French colony. How the British government failed Wolfe and the rulers of France abandoned Montcalm and how Wolfe won. Although the battle on the Plains of Abraham is the centerpiece of this work, the book also presents a rich tapestry of eighteenth century North America, France and England.
Customer Reviews:
Good for those who would just like to get a feel for history.......2005-09-04
While not the best book to use for research, Wolfe and Montcalm is a good read for those who would like to get a general feel for these two gentlemen and the Seven Years War in Canada.
There are indeed several factual mistakes in the book (ie: Wolfe was 32, not 31 during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham) but none of these really take away from the overall picture. The book reads more like a novel than a textbook and is relatively short; perfect for those who just want to get a feel for the subject.
Entertaining but Lacks Accuracy.......2004-10-05
Despite being a labour of love, 'Wolfe and Montcalm,' recently published by Firefly Books, has its noticeable downfalls. The main errors lie within the historical description. For example, Carroll states throughout the text that Major-General Wolfe was thirty-one years of age during the Seige. This is more of a simple math problem than anything else. Wolfe was born January 2, 1727 and died September 13, 1759, making him thirty-two rather than thirty-one. Additionally, in the preface, Carroll remarks on the dress of the two generals at the Plains of Abraham. She incorrectly presumes that "Wolfe wouldn't be caught dead in gaiters" (p. 8) whereupon close examination of the sketch made by Captain Hervey Smyth (Wolfe's aide-de-camp) during the Seige clearly shows him wearing the above-mentioned articles with the tops turned down. The book, in its entirety, is readable and entertaining, but as a work of non-fiction it lacks the accuracy and depth of research required.
For those interested in the lives of the two commanders, 'Le Marquis de Montcalm' by Thomas Chapais is the primary work regarding the career of Louis-Joseph de Montcalm. 'General Wolfe' by Richard Garrett provides a concise, to-the-point account of his subject, while Robert Wright's 'Life of Major-General James Wolfe' published in 1864 remains the definitive Wolfe biography.

Book Description
James Wolfe, who died at age 32 while winning North America for the English Crown at Quebec, has been immortalized far more in art than in literature. This first biography of Wolfe in over 50 years fills that gap. It follows the young hero's career from Culloden, where the Highlanders were smashed to the Continent during the Seven Years War, and finally to America where he wins the climactic battle against the French at Quebec, the victory that claimed his life. This book also provides an insightful look at the British Army of the mid-1700s, the formidable "Redcoats" the Americans themselves were soon to face. It has often been noted that the Revolution was fortunate to have occurred in between the careers of Wellington and Wolfe; this compelling new work informs us why.
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre.......2007-07-13
Although this book includes extensive and interesting information on the inner workings of the British military of the mid-18th century, it is lacking in information on Wolfe himself. A good book for general information it only rates mediocre as a biography.
Will written book on the General.......2001-01-05
The author has a great understanding of the British army of the 18th century and how one would purchased his rank and then hope for a promotion. Or would work the social system of the army and goverment for a promotion. James Wolfe played the system and was all so a great officer. This is the best book I have read on the James Wolfe. I have tried to read all the books I can find on him. He is one of those outstanding military leaders in history. And yes he was sickly and a mothers boy. Yet he could win battles. Because over his victory at Quebec. We have are nation and our freedom. With the French out of Canada, the Americas did not need the British army and the King any more. You all know what happened to them in the in a few years. Great book on James Wolfe well worth the cost and a good read. I hope the author will keep on writing.

Book Description
Nominated several times for the Noble Peace Prize, world-renowned Palestinian priest Elias Chacour narrates the gripping story of his life spent working to achieve peace and reconciliation among Israeli Jews, Christians, and Muslims. From the destruction of his boyhood village and his work as a priest in Galilee to his efforts to build schools, libraries, and summer camps for children of all religions, this peacemaker's moving story brings hope to one of the most complex struggles of our time.
Customer Reviews:
The Massacre in Gish.......2006-07-08
In Blood Brothers, Abuna mentions the massacre/mass grave in Gish very briefly. Abuna's motivation has been, and continues to be the search (and work) for peace. Yet there are those who dispute him because the truth is too hard to swallow. Abuna does not write a polemic and is not apologetic in his views. He simply and deeply wants peace. I am not a religious person at all, but I am from Gish. Members of my family in 1948 were instructed by jewish soldiers to collect the dead bodies from roof tops and narrow alleys and move them to the mass burial place in Gish. All of us kids [of Gish] knew where that spot was and we never played near it. Some people will accept the truth only when it fits their beliefs. But unless we learn from history and come to terms with certain atrocities (both palestinian and israeli), peace has no chance.
An excellent book by a man of peace.......2005-03-02
Elias Chacour is a man of peace and a man of God. He has been awarded the World Methodist Peace Prize for his efforts, as well as many other accolades. He has brought together people of many faiths and races and broken down barriers of hate and discrimination without himself succumbing to these forces. At the same time, he has told the story of Palestine's tragedy just as it is. I am a Palestinian Christian and I can attest to the accuracy of his facts. His Web site (look under Mar Elias College) tells of the great things he and his supporters around the world have done to educate Palestinian youth who were denied the opportunity to learn by the Israeli school system. The review by Lars399 is stilted, particularly as it is influenced by Maronite Christians whose allegiance to Israel and hatred for Palestinians is a well known fact. Lars was duped. This book is a great eye-opener and a useful starting point for understanding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, especially for American Christians who are so influenced by the one-sided media blitz after 9/11 and the Iraq war.
If you want to see the Truth for what it really is........2002-12-14
If all people thought and lived like Abuna Chacour war would not exsist. A true follower of Jesus Christ, Abuna truly walks the walk and talks the talk. How can anyone Not read these books and how can anyone having read them not believed every word as gospel? American Christians especially supporters of Zionism need to wake up and realize what they are really supporting. How silly to think that we can hurry the return of Christ by blindly supporting Isreal (the Zionist and their supporters) and their ungodly actions. REALLY humans hurrying the RETURN of Christ? How silly. One must also know that not all Jews in the Middle East support Zionism. One question that needs to be asked is where have all the Christians gone that once lived in the land where Christ walked? People do your research. Are we not told to question/test all things?
Lars399 is misinformed and pushing a faulty agenda.......2002-07-31
The response written by "lars399" reveals to the educated reader that he is misinformed and pushing a (theologically questionable) Zionist agenda.
The facts related in Father Chacour's literature are not only truthful, but mild in comparison to the full facts facing the myths that Israel propogates about its inception. I am very displeased to find that so many people found his review helpful. If one takes a look at his previous record, he also very boldly refutes other scholarly work on the subject, particularly that of Israeli New Historian Tom Segev.
Before taking "lars399"'s word as gospel truth, the reader of this review should spend sometime having a brief history lesson of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as the theological underpinnings of Christian Zionism (based in dispensational theology). As a Palestinian (Protestant) Christian who has visited and studied this area, I can attest to the truth of Father Chacour's historical analysis. If you hoping to free yourself from propoganda and theological error, challenging the perceptions that American (Christian Zionists) blindly hold on this issue, Fr. Chacour is a good place to start. Most respected academians and states around the world have recognized this truth-including Israel. It's time Americans started thinking critically and challenging the bias that is so ill-informed.
peace.......2002-01-09
Love. If anyone can express the idea, emotion and action of the word it is Elias Chacour. I too, have had the honor of meeting this man, who is truly the most normal of peole who has mad ehis life into one giving peace and love to people through hard work. This book expresses the little hope I have to the Palestinian Israeli (pardon my spelling) conflict, and really or the people all over the worl who cannot live together in peace. Hearbreaking and vivid, meaningful more than just literature.

Hiking Big Bend National Park, 2nd (Regional Hiking Series)
ASIN: 0292740425 |
Book Description
A breathtaking country of rugged mountain peaks, uninhabited desert, and spectacular river canyons, Big Bend is one of the United States' most remote national parks and among Texas' most popular tourist attractions. Located in the great bend of the Rio Grande that separates Texas and Mexico, the park comprises some 800,000 acres, an area larger than the state of Rhode Island, and draws over 300,000 visitors each year.
The Story of Big Bend National Park offers a comprehensive, highly readable history of the park from before its founding in 1944 up to the present. John Jameson opens with a fascinating look at the mighty efforts involved in persuading Washington officials and local landowners that such a park was needed. He details how money was raised and land acquired, as well as how the park was publicized and developed for visitors. Moving into the present, he discusses such issues as natural resource management, predator protection in the park, and challenges to land, water, and air. Along the way, he paints colorful portraits of many individuals, from area residents to park rangers to Lady Bird Johnson, whose 1966 float trip down the Rio Grande brought the park to national attention.
This history will be required reading for all visitors and prospective visitors to Big Bend National Park. For everyone concerned about our national parks, it makes a persuasive case for continued funding and wise stewardship of the parks as they face the twin pressures of skyrocketing attendance and declining budgets.

Book Description
The Big Bend of the Rio Grande - what a land of contrast! Desolate badlands, forested mountains, a long island of green supported by the river's flow, sun-baked hillsides, and canyons so deep the direct sunlight barely penetrates - these are desert lands burgeoning with life!
Big Bend National Park, located on the Texas/Mexico border on the great bend of the Rio Grande, was established in 1944 to preserve the great canyons, mountains, and desert.
