The first autobiography written in English--by a brewery owner, Christian mystic, and mother of 14 named Margery Kempe, who died in the 15th century--is now available in a lively, modern translation by John Skinner. It begins with her stark conversion experience, heralded by a vision of Christ in her bedroom one night. The story follows Margery through pilgrimages across Europe and to the Holy Land, through a heresy trial in England, and her burgeoning mystical life. Similar in many ways to Showings by Julian of Norwich and the Confessions of Augustine, The Book of Margery Kempe is a beautiful description of medieval daily life and religious experience. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Though a familiar name, little was known about the English mystic Margery Kempe (c. 1373-c. 1440) for hundreds of years except that she had an association with the great Julian of Norwich. This all changed in 1934 with the discovery of The Book of Margery Kempe in a library where it had lain hidden for four hundred years. Finding Margery's own story was important not just because of the light it shed on her life, but it also turned out to be the first known autobiography in the English language. Even more intriguing to the experts of the day, this unique document was written by a woman.
But if anyone had expected to find her anything like her cloistered contemporary, Julian, they were in for something of a surprise. Far from being a typical holy woman, Margery Kempe was married and mother of fourteen children. Moreover, she had been a woman of substance, even running a large brewery for a time. After turning to religion, she traveled thousands of miles around the known world on pilgrimages to distant lands.
Beyond the circumstances of her life, what's most compelling about the text is the inner Margery that emerges. Her account of spiritual awakening, far from being a blissful episode is instead full of conflict and recrimination. What good was this new way of life if it caused her such trouble? Was this really the only way to lead a holy life? Margery remained unsure of the answers. But her patience in her struggle is a wonder to behold, and an example for us today.

Inspirational.......2007-09-23
The reason why this book is so inspirational is because Margery is very honest throughout about how difficult she finds her spiritual path and her commitment to God, combining this with marriage, children and the persecution and ridicule she faces on her pilgrimages. It is a very rewarding read because of this and one of my favourite books.
Interesting and valuable, but..........2007-02-21
I read this for my Later Middle Ages history course, and I must admit that I didn't care for it. The book as other reviewers have said, is written over 20 years in hindsight, and Margery herself must have been an insufferable person whether her experience was true or not. It seemed to me that she brought most of her suffering upon herself and later justified it with her visions...but whether I agree with her experience is really not the point.
As the first known English autobiography, and as an insight to one of the forms that faith took in the Middle Ages (not to mention being from the female perspective) this book is invaluable. But had it not been for class I wouldn't have suffered through the 50 pages of weeping and rambling that I did (we didn't even have to read the whole thing!). Though she was a pilgrim to many holy sites, she notates almost nothing of her external experiences in Jeruselam and Rome - so I don't think that it would be particularly useful to those interested in general history.
She's the real thing.......2005-07-26
In Catholic terminology, "a mystic." In Protestant terminology, "a prophetess." Either way, Margery Kempe is the real thing. I stack her right up there with Catherine of Siena and Bridget of Sweden.
Yes, I too got a little tired of all her weeping, but this is an autobiography; she's telling the truth.
The historian side of me loved it, too. The book gives a rare glimpse of the Middle Ages and the passion Christians had in these days to make a journey to the Holy Land, even while it was in Muslim hands.
Margery Kempe was the real deal. Her struggle of faith and the persecution she endured are not far from the reality of many of us.
One word of caution: When reading the writings of a mystic or prophetess like Margery Kempe, we must keep in mind that the person is fallible. For example, at various times Margery deprived her husband of sexual intercourse in her belief that sex is impure. She, in fact, states that the Lord told her to have intercourse with her husband in order to bear more children. HMMM! She wants to deprive her husband but God is telling her to have sex!!! But let this not be a mystery. The Roman Church in the Middle Ages did have a puritanical view against sexual intercouse which was inherited (sadly) from St. Augustine. But the Church Father was wrong. The Bible states that the marriage bed can and should be pure (Hebrews 13:4) and that husbands and wives should not withhold sex from each other or stop having sex (I Corinthians 7:2-5). All this to say that when reading Margery or any other mystic, keep in mind that Scripture is used to test prophecy.
Kooky Kempe.......2005-07-11
At first, I rather enjoyed this book - Margery Kempe is quite kooky. But reading more and more, Margery just became annoying, especially with all her weeping. Is it any wonder that no one wanted to travel with her? Or that she was arrested so often? Did she really think her activities would win people to God? Or am I just guilty of being another one of her persecutors?
I expected more..........2005-04-12
Another book I read for class. I knew a little about Margery Kempe beforehand, like she had 14 children. I didn't know that the first autobiography ever written in English was so boring. I felt like Margery repeated herself, over and over. I wanted more details about her life- about her husband, her children, and her pilgrimages. I don't think I would pick this up unless you are specifically interested in early Christianity writings.

Book Description
'The Book of Margery Kempe', the earliest surviving autobiography in English (dated 1436-8), is a unique account of the extraordinary life, travels and revelations of a fifteenth-century Norfolk housewife and mother, pilgrim, prophet and visionary; it is one of the most compelling and significant English texts of the middle ages. This volume presents the original text in accessible form for modern readers, with on-page glossing and a glossary of common words. It is accompanied by on-page annotation of and commentary on the 'Book', bringing together scholarship on Kempe and setting her life in the social, political and spiritual context of her time. Book Description
Awareness of the ecclesiastical doctrine of discretio spirituum (the means of testing whether visions were truly of divine origin) was vital for medieval women visionaries. Visions and prophecy offered medieval women one of the few pathways to the religious and, in some cases, the political life of their time, but were subject to stringent checks due to the combination of women (deceitful by nature) and deceiving visions. However, those women visionaries who conformed could effectively fulfil their divine mandate to communicate their revelations. This book explores discretio spirituum in the works of a number of female visionaries: they include St Bridget of Sweden, who was eager to present her experiences as impeccably orthodox and valid; Margery Kempe, whose ambivalent reception is shown to be due to her inconsistent conformity to the doctrine; and Marguerite Porete and Joan of Arc, whose deaths by burning at the stake demonstrate the severe consequences of their failure to conform, their visions being deemed of demonic origin.Dr ROSALYNN VOADEN teaches in the Department of English at Arizona State University.

Interesting medieval spirituality book; bad edition.......2004-05-23
Margery Kempe was an extraordinary and driven woman who lived in a time (1373~1440s) when that was nearly unheard of, and certainly not recorded for the present generation. Her book is generally accorded to be the first autobiography written in English, an amazing feat considering she was a woman, and that she could neither read nor write. In her narration to a scribe, she described her spiritual journey through life and her love of God, and in the process gives us a glimpse of the historical world that she lived in. It is translated from old english and is broken into many small, loosely-chronological chapters, each describing an aspect of some incident or journey.
If you are interested in medieval history, Christianity, mysticism or feminism, this is a great book to try. Its format might be a little hard to get into at first, because it is written in the third person and jumps about from topic to topic, but the introduction should fill you in on most aspects - the only problem is that this introduction is more geared towards sensationalizing Margery's experience, rather than celebrating it. Some readers do feel that Margery was mentally ill because of her wild devotional behaviors and her abnormal lifestyle, but it is equally regarded that her panache, courage and true love of her deity that made her so different.
Margery Kempe was an eccentric wandering pilgrim for most of the time covered in the book, and she shares her exploits such as being tried for heresy before powerful men like the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, fighting and winning the right to a chaste marriage from her husband, going on Pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Rome with a group that despised her, getting chased out of towns and made fun of by monks. It also includes the spiritual side, which include Margery's direct conversations with God, her explanations of her loud, uncontrollable crying fits, her passionate love of Jesus and her knowledge of Catholic and Biblical doctrine.
The Book of Margery Kempe has been translated and introduced by many different authors, and it would be my suggestion to find one other than this if you're interested in Margery - such as the one by Penguin Classics translated by B.A. Windeatt - ones that use research and scholarship rather than sensationalism to bolster the amazing story of this historical figure.
Worth a look for any medievalist.......2000-07-22
This book manages to be of interest to anyone who wishes a travelogue of medieval pilgrimages, a humble recognition that even the oddest among us can have their minds very occupied with the divine, a look at the first autobiography of an English woman, or a case study in obsessive compulsive behaviour. Margery's disjointed recollections, coupled with her constant references to her revelations and retroactive "virginity," admittedly are not a fun pursuit, but her extreme case does seem to place much of the deficiencies inherited from the worst in medieval spirituality (a legacy of the Plague ... even if the best of the era was the finest in history) into perspective. I guarantee that, while one may find Margery as troublesome as did those of her time and place, one will never find her recollections dull.

Book Description
The history of The Book of Margery Kempe from its first production in 1934 is also part of the history of English literary studies. Marea Mitchell traces some of the fascinating stories behind the proliferation of productions since then, including the involvement of Hope Emily Allen and other independent women scholars, popular receptions of the Book in World War II, and current productions that locate it as part of a medieval literary canon. Working from a cultural materialist perspective, Mitchell focuses on the materiality of the text itself and of the bodies of scholarship that have arisen around it.

Book Description
During the course of American history, wrongful events have occurred and certain Americans have stood up and spoken out against these wrongs: Tom Paine, Edward R. Murrow, Daniel Ellsberg. Vincent Bugliosi takes his place in this special pantheon of patriots with his powerful, brilliant, and courageous expose of crime by the highest court in the land. When an article he wrote on this topic appeared in The Nation magazine in February 2001, it drew the largest outpouring of letters and e-mail in the magazine's 136-year history, tapping a deep reservoir of outrage. The original article is now expanded, amended, and backed by amplifications, endnotes, and the relevant Supreme Court documents.
Customer Reviews:
Educational.......2007-08-30
This book packs a lot of information into very few pages. Bugliosi does a good job of supporting his suppositions with law. There are so many points made, most everyone will be unaware of some of them. The biggest drawback for me was that sometimes Bugliosi strays into name-calling which leads one to begin to doubt if some of the scholarship isn't slanted more than is obvious at first blush.
A case Excellently Presented.......2007-08-05
Bugliosi is one of a kind! He makes his points clearly and effectively. I wish he could take all these so called "justices" to court where he would run circles around them with his startlingly clear reasoning and thinking, ending with them all being dragged off to the nearest prison for treason. A great book to get the juices of freedom flowing again from a great man who truly cares about justice.
Right Result, Wrong Reasoning.......2007-06-01
I voted for Al Gore in 2000 and wish that he were finishing his second term as President at this time. However, if you put partisan emotions aside and look at the full legal context of that election, it is clear that Bush was the legally elected President.
Article II of the Constitution gives state legislatures the authority to appoint electors to the electoral college, using whatever criteria each legislature establishes. In the early days of the Republic, most legislatures chose all electors themselves, by majority vote. Over time, other criteria were used, until now all 50 states award electors based on the results of the popular vote. With only one or two exceptions (I forget which states), the candidate with the highest popular vote in a given state gets ALL of that state's electoral votes.
For many decades, Florida has followed this procedure to award its electoral votes. But Florida election laws clearly state that the state legislature has the right to set aside the results of the popular vote totals; the legislature may then directly award, by majority vote of all legislators, the electoral votes to whichever candidate it chooses. In 2000, both Houses of the Florida legislature had solid Republican majorities. The Republican leaders of both bodies (and the Republican governor, Jeb Bush), clearly stated that, if necessary, they would call a special legislative session to award ALL Florida electors to George W. Bush.
Had that scenario occurred, here is what would likely have played out. On the day that Congress was scheduled to count the electoral votes, the Gore operatives would have challenged the Florida electoral count. Existing FEDERAL election laws would then have become operative. The Republican U.S. House majority would have awarded the electoral votes to Bush. The U.S. Senate would have voted 51-50 to award the electoral votes to Gore, with then Vice President Gore casting the tiebreaking vote in his favor. Federal law states that if the Senate and House award electors to different candidates, the governor of the state in question has the right to break the tie and award the electors to the candidate he so chooses. The Florida governor in 2000...Jeb Bush, George W.'s brother. In a last ditch effort to salvage the election for Gore, the Florida Supreme Court would probably have tried to use their powers of judicial review to thwart this scenario, by claiming that a state Supreme Court has authority to review all acts of its own legislature. However, the U.S. Supreme Court would certainly have ruled that the U.S. Constitution unequivocally gives the power to select electors (by whichever method it chooses) to state legislatures, outside the scope of state court judicial review - and by more than a 5-4 vote.
So there you have it, folks. Lament all you want over what federal election laws should be, bash the electoral college, lambaste the confusing "butterfly" ballots in south Florida, criticize the flimsy equal protection arguments of the 5 or 7 justices, etc. But all partisan feelings aside, George W. Bush was the legitimately, constitutionally elected winner of the 2000 Presidential election. All other legal reasonings in this book make for nice academic discussions, but are beside the point in any practical sense.
Doesn't mince any words.......2007-05-30
Bugliosi turns a prosecutor's eye to Bush v. Gore and finds the decision not just lacking substance, but a criminal act.
First he deals with motive. All of the 5 justices who chose Bush as president came up through partisan Republican politics. While that's expected (since they come to their positions through the political process), integrity in upholding their oath to support the Consitition has been expected to take precedence. Beyond their partisan pasts and connections, 3 of the 5 had immediate and direct interest in a Bush presidency. Justice O'Connor publically said that if Gore won she'd have to postpone her retirement at least 4 years (so as not to have a Democratic President apppoint her successor.) Justice Thomas's wife, through her Heritage Foundation position was poised to serve on the Bush transition team and Justice Scalia's two sons work for a law firm that handles Bush's legal business.
Bugliosi doesn't say what would happen if we, the non-elite, helped out friends or worked things to our interest through service on a jury, but I'm sure something would.
Next Bugliosi deals with the legal issues. How could the court accept Bush's argument that Bush needed "equal protection" from Gore? That is... the court assumed that Bush won the election and that by counting the votes Gore could take it away from him. Votes, 60,000 in this case, the sacred element of our democracy... the very core of what people fight and die for... were negated as the Court ignored its own entrenched states right biases and regarded time frames as inflexible when complete past practice and case law showed recounts and seating delegates, (with disputes always decided by states and state courts), to be viewed as target dates and not rigid dealines.
On p. 155 Bugliosi has a hypothetical script. He suggests the dialog of the justices and how they came to "reason out" their unsigned opinion that allowed them to pick the president over 50 million voting Americans.
In the early part of the book (written in 2001) he likens this decision to the "preposterous" idea that Republican prosecutors would prosecute only Democrats and vice versa. It was strange that he would mention it, because it was this exact thing that piqued my current interest in this 2001 book.
Supreme Court Betrayal.......2007-05-12
Mr. Bugliosi's excellent book brings into question the entire operation and philosophy of the supreme court. Perhaps the supreme court should be simply the highest appellate court and leave questions of constitutionality to the judicial committees of Congress. As Mr. Bugliosi points out, there is nothing in the Consitution that gives the Supreme Court the right to strike down federal and state laws as unconstitutional.

Book Description
His hard-hitting critiques of Democrat and Republican administrations in The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Newsweek, and other national publications have made him a "bipartisan scourge." Now, James Bovard launches a blistering attack on the Bush administration that will add new fuel to the fires of Bush opponents while giving presidential supporters much to think about. In a series of cogently argued allegations, Bovard shows how the campaign promises of 2000 have betrayed not only the electorate, but the Constitution itself: from the erosion of civil liberties, massive debt, and the arrogance of federal agencies, to economic policies that favor the wealthy, and the deceptive maneuvers that led to war in Iraq and the alienation of former allies. For every American, The Bush Betrayal will be required reading in this election year.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Work, Mr. Bovard.......2007-05-09
Reading "The Bush Betrayal" was unusual for me because for many years I have considered myself a basic liberal. It is a natural fit for me because of the benefits I have personally received from New Deal liberalism. So, while reading a highly critical book about Bush was nothing new, the source was. The book is written from a definite Libertarian point of view from a clever guy: Jim Bovard.
I found Jim Bovard through flipping past the C-Span one day. I stopped to hear this guy Bovard. He was speaking at some National Review for College Kids affair and discussing the the Bush administration. I stopped and checked him out. I remembered that speech and googled him, reading some of his articles, which pointed out the hypocrisies of: first, Bill Clinton and then George W. Bush. So, I decided to get a couple of his books. "The Bush Betrayal" was the first one I read. The second one is an anti-Clinton book called "Feeling Your Pain."
Before reading "The Bush Betrayal" I had put away a few anti-Bush treaties. I do think "Bush Betrayal" stacks up well against them. Bovard is witty and the sarcasm in the book is perfectly done. Also, there is a broader seriousness to the book especially in that Bovard's thoughts on Bush's domestic disasters.
The book was especially relevant for me because I am disgruntled with the Democratic party right now. Bovard's writing opened my eyes to a different perspective than the usual Bush bashing you get from the tiresome Kos fanatics. Believe it or not, there are principled conservative minded people who love their country and constitution enough to know and understand how dangerous Bush is. Bovard, to me, expresses their view like no other.
This is the most useful shredding of Bush I have seen, and will likely serve as the groundwork for future historians to describe this dysfunctional presidency. He makes a clear case about John Ashcroft, and his heavy handed dismemberment of freedoms, you find a full account of the lies and deception behind the attack on Iraq, the fear mongering, warrantless searches, etc..It is a stunning chapter by chapter indictment of the whole sorry state of affairs we have drifted into since 9-11 and before.
In closing the book, Bovard brought home a point I had never mulled over before. In Bush's eyes, the "War on Terror" is an absolute power struggle between good and evil. There is no neutral ground. Every person who opposes Bush is the equivalent of a hijacker (some of his more gullible minions can be seen writing this kind of drivel all over the internet). If this is so, then Bush must be seen as the ultimate instrument of pure good, and hence, must consider himself the "hand of God." Bovard has convinced me the man has a messiah complex.
The next challenge for me, one I relish, is reading Bovard's similar treatment of the Clinton administration, written in 2000, around the time a flood of cartoon like tabloid books were coming out. As I have stated before, I have a small collection of books about Clinton, and this will definitely be a treat.
I'll be reading more from Jim in the future.
another good book by bovard.......2007-04-11
This is what we expect from Bovard, a great compilation of facts, but sadly, in his zealousness, he keeps making the same mistakes.
1. Piling on top of a list of already convincing facts, he has to add questionable editorial opinions from obscure sources and his own quips.
2. Instead of being happy to present "the other side" of the argument, he has to make conclusions that this view is the complete picture.
He should be happy with making us nervous and question Bush heavily, which he does very well.
One of his more obvious excesses is when he quotes a lefty Michigan History professor making outrageous statements about Israel's assassination of Sheik Yassin, which advances no point about anything, and suggests that he could have been 'arrested' instead of killed, as if this would have made the terrorists less outraged and as if arresting a heavily guarded terrorist leader is 'easy' compared to killing him. And as if Israel has a choice about letting the leader of one of the biggest terrorist organizations in the world just do nothing...and then to link all this to Iraq. It's a real stretch.
There are two sides to this story as with any story, as with his story about Bush. There have been successes in Bush's war on terror and presidency in general. Bovard isn't interested in these, which is fine. Critique has its place, but he has to remember he is presenting critique, not the whole story.
Other examples are his quoting of editorial opinion columns in newspapers. You can find an editorial to say anything.
He should stick to the facts.
If you have the ability to sift through his books for the information he gets, and the timelines he puts together, and separate out the extra flab, you'll be a more knowledgeable person.
Prime Beef, but it is past its date.......2007-03-07
James Bovard writes excellently and keeps the readers attention, which is sometimes a challenge in a current affairs or political tome. The majority of the things covered in this book have morphed into uglier monsters in the closet, thus making this book dated sadly. When it was written Bovard was cutting edge and deserves kudos for saying things that were not popular with the mainstream media. All too much still is not popular with the mainstream media, or else George W. Bush would not be still president - rather he would have been impeached, or potentially being tried for war crimes at the World Court.
Now a bit out of date, but still a good read........2007-01-19
Since this book was published in 2004, it now reads a little bit stale. However it does provide a good catalogue of the hypocrisies and malfeasances of the Bush administration from a libertarian perspective. The book is a good one to pass around and share with all different kinds of people to show that the only consistent thing about the Bush adminstration is how consistently disingenuous it is.
scathing indictment of corrupt presidency.......2006-03-27
Bovard has assembled 278 pages of damning condemnation of a dishonest president who has broken promises, betrayed his oath of office, broken the law, and engaged in deception as a matter of daily practice.
It is an overwhelming book, with detail after detail showing that George W. Bush is neither consistently conservative, libertarian, nor liberal in his actions. He has engaged in actions that will cost Americans trillions of dollars--from steel tariffs to farm subsidies to the Medicare prescription boondoggles that amounted to a blank check to the pharmaceutical industry. He has engaged in actions in the name of national security that have done nothing to actually improve security (in many cases making things worse), while restricting civil liberties and giving the government unprecedented powers to take actions against people without any judicial oversight.
And he's done all these things in just his first term as President.
Bovard's book covers Bush's actions in his first four years in office, describing his dishonesty on trade, education, agriculture, national security, the war on terror, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He writes from a libertarian/conservative perspective, arguing that Bush has betrayed the conservative principles he's claimed to advocate at every turn.
This is an excellent book to give to conservative friends who think Bush is a good or mostly good president. It is extensively documented, though unfortunately relies almost entirely on secondary sources (newspaper and magazine accounts) rather than primary sources. Another minor peeve is Bovard's overuse of the word "vivifies," which appears numerous times through the text. But those detract only slightly from what is a powerful indictment of a corrupt presidency.

Book Description
While most efforts at biodiversity conservation have focused primarily on protected areas and reserves, the unprotected lands surrounding those area?the "matrix"?are equally important to preserving global biodiversity and maintaining forest health. In Conserving Forest Biodiversity, leading forest scientists David B. Lindenmayer and Jerry F. Franklin argue that the conservation of forest biodiversity requires a comprehensive and multiscaled approach that includes both reserve and nonreserve areas. They lay the foundations for such a strategy, bringing together the latest scientific information on landscape ecology, forestry, conservation biology, and related disciplines as they examine:
- the importance of the matrix in key areas of ecology such as metapopulation dynamics, habitat fragmentation, and landscape connectivity
- general principles for matrix management
- using natural disturbance regimes to guide human disturbance
- landscape-level and stand-level elements of matrix management
- the role of adaptive management and monitoring
- social dimensions and tensions in implementing matrix-based forest management
In addition, they present five case studies that illustrate aspects and elements of applied matrix management in forests. The case studies cover a wide variety of conservation planning and management issues from North America, South America, and Australia, ranging from relatively intact forest ecosystems to an intensively managed plantation.
Conserving Forest Biodiversity presents strategies for enhancing matrix management that can play a vital role in the development of more effective approaches to maintaining forest biodiversity. It examines the key issues and gives practical guidelines for sustained forest management, highlighting the critical role of the matrix for scientists, managers, decisionmakers, and other stakeholders involved in efforts to sustain biodiversity and ecosystem processes in forest landscapes.
