Many books have been written about Ronald Reagan, but this collection of his letters must certainly be among the most varied and revealing about every aspect of the man. Organized by themes such as "Old Friends," "Running for Office," "Core Beliefs," "The Critics," and "Foreign Leaders," the book contains over 1,000 letters stretching from 1922 to 1994. Whether discussing economic policy with a political foe, dispensing marital advice, or sharing a joke with a pen pal, Reagan comes across as gracious, caring, and inquisitive. Even when responding to blistering criticism, he remained fair and thoughtful. As one would expect, many of the letters are addressed to world leaders, well-known American politicians, pundits, and journalists, and these are certainly interesting for their historical relevance and insights into Reagan's diplomatic style. Among the more fascinating notes, however, are those sent to private citizens, some of which are quite long and detailed. That Reagan would spend the time, as both governor of California and President, to respond to the concerns and inquiries of constituents reveals that he never forgot how he got to his positions of leadership in the first place. He even went so far on occasions to help make business connections for people he had never met in person. He also sent many letters to children. In one, he encouraged a young student to turn off the TV and grab a book instead: "Reading is a magic carpet and you can never be lonely if you learn to enjoy a good book." Taken as a whole, these revealing, well-written, and entertaining letters trace the story of Reagan's life and times as well as any standard biography. They also offer further proof of why he was dubbed "The Great Communicator." --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
Ronald Reagan may have been the most prolific correspondent of any American president since Theodore Roosevelt, having likely written more than 10,000 letters in his lifetime to a wide array of friends and family, politicians, private citizens, and children. As vivid a communicator in words as he was in person, Reagan reveals his character and thinking in his writings as nowhere else. In his correspondence, Reagan made candid, considerate, and tough statements that he rarely made in public, and often gave advice and encouragement to family and friends. The letters are also a political and historical treasure trove, revealing Reagan's thoughts on American government and policy from early in his career to his time in the White House and his return to civilian life.
Honest, open, and heartfelt, Ronald Reagan's letters reveal a man who felt most comfortable and natural with pen in hand, and a man who reached out to friend and foe alike throughout his life. Reagan: A Life in Letters is as important as it is astonishing and moving.
Download Description
"Ronald Reagan may have been the most prolific correspondent of any American president since Thomas Jefferson. The total number of letters written over his lifetime probably exceeds 10,000. Their breadth is equally astonishing -- with friends and family, with politicians, children, and other private citizens, Reagan was as dazzling a communicator in letters as he was in person. Collectively, his letters reveal his character and thinking like no other source. He made candid, considerate, and tough statements that he rarely made in a public speech or open forum. He enjoyed responding to citizens, and comforting or giving advice or encouragement to friends. Now, the most astonishing of his writings, culled in Reagan: A Portrait in Letters, finally and fully reveal the true Ronald Reagan. Many of Reagan's handwritten letters are among the most thoughtful, charming, and moving documents he produced. Long letters to his daughter Patti, applauding her honesty, and son Ron Jr., urging him to be the best student he can be, reveal Reagan as a caring parent. Long-running correspondence with old friends, carried on for many decades, reveals the importance of his hometown and college networks. Heartfelt advice on love and marriage, fond memories of famous friends from Hollywood, and rare letters about his early career allow Reagan to tell his own full biography as never before. Running correspondence with young African-American student Ruddy Hines reveals a little-known presidential pen pal. The editors also reveal that another long-running pen-pal relationship, with fan club leader Lorraine Wagner, was initially ghostwritten by his mother, until Reagan began to write to Wagner himself some years later. Reagan's letters are a political and historical treasure trove. Revealed here for the first time is a running correspondence with Richard Nixon, begun in 1959 and continuing until shortly before Nixon's death. Letters to key supporters reveal that Reagan was thinking of the presidency from the mid-1960s; that missile defense was of interest to him as early as the 1970s; and that few details of his campaigns or policies escaped his notice. Dozens of letters to constituents reveal Reagan to have been most comfortable and natural with pen in hand, a man who reached out to friend and foe alike throughout his life. Reagan: A Life in Letters is as important as it is astonishing and moving. "

Inspiration for the rest of us.......2007-06-08
After all the sneering put downs from the leftist elitists, we can see the truth of a great man, in his own words. Almost singlehanded, he led the revolt of the common man against the elitists who would steal the common man's liberty for crass political gain. The revolution continues.
The book could have been half as long, and therefore twice as effective........2007-06-04
If you are expecting intricate epistles along the lines of Paul the Apostle or C. S. Lewis Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis - Box Set, forget about it. Sixty percent of this book is small (almost jotted) memos. It is nice to see that Reagan kept in contact with people, and that he nudged his relationships along with these small bundles. But as a presidential source book, we could have done with less. The book could have been half as long, and therefore twice as effective.
If you are looking for sources on Reaganism, then I recommend Speaking My Mind: Selected Speeches and Reagan, In His Own Hand: The Writings of Ronald Reagan That Reveal His Revolutionary Vision for America. We get interesting policy letters about once every 25 pages or so. The gems are his correspondence with Nixon and Brezhnev. Plus we have a lot of material from the Governator years. These are key, since one does not go from GE spokesman to Leader of the Free World in one bound. We see the Reagan we all know love and . . . developing in the California Crucible.
I think the biggest surprise was the section on pen pals. Instead of Ronaldus Magnus, we see Ronnie, all around good egg. Many of these letters are folksy, dealing with human problems, and occasionally we get Reagan's insight into current events--Lt. Calley, Charles Manson, and Sirhan Sirhan. Several letters are personal response to his critics. His firm but gentle way of rebuking a misinformed foe serves for a universal lesson.
Favorite Letter: page 664.
Andy Smith, a seventh-grader in Irmo, S.C., wrote the President in 1984, "Today my mother declared my bedroom a disaster area. I would like to request federal funds to hire a crew to clean up my room."
Dear Andy:
I'm sorry to be so late in answering your letter but as you know I've been in China . . .
Your application for disaster relief has been duly noted but I must point out one technical problem; the authority declaring the disaster is supposed to make the request. In this case your mother.
However setting that aside I'll have to point out the larger problem of available funds. This has been a year of disasters, 539 hurricanes as of May 4th and several more since, numerous floods, forest fires, drought in Texas and a number of earthquakes. What I'm getting at is that funds are dangerously low.
May I make a suggestion? This administration, believing that government has done many things that could better be done by volunteers at the local level, has sponsored a Private Sector Initiative program, calling upon people to practice voluntarism in the solving of a number of local problems.
Your situation appears to be a natural. I'm sure your mother was fully justified in proclaiming your room a disaster. Therefore you are in an excellent position to launch another volunteer program to go along with the more than 3,000 already underway in our nation--congratulations . . .
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan
Priceless!!!

This book should be part of the Essential Reagan Cannon. Along with "Speaking My Mind" and "In His Own Hand," this book should be read with The Reagan Diaries, An American Life, Ronald Reagan: A Life in Politics and In the Words of Ronald Reagan: The Wit, Wisdom, and Eternal Optimism of America's 40th President. I also recommend Reagan: Man of Principle, for insight on the elusive Governator years.
I love that old man.......2006-12-28
This review is not probably going to be what one would think for someone who loved Ronald Reagan, because this book was written for people who ignorantly thought he was "the most dangerous man in America".
That is the focus of this book in being 'Legacy' which was what his family, friends and administration were dealing with in releasing this book. We knew President Reagan was brilliant, wise, caring, God fearing, moral and a world leader who only comes along in a generation to transform the world, but these letters were meant to convince the narrow minded how wrong they were about him.
For someone who adores this gentle man, I found it startling in reading he names Jane Fonda and her husband a traitor, how Democrats lied to gain power while the nation suffered in mirror image of what just happened to Bush 43 and his insight that Jimmy Carter would be a disaster and was a phoney before he even took office. The reason that was startling is Reagan was right about Star Wars, was right about how to topple the Soviet Union without a nuclear war and was right how the key to eastern Europe's freedom was religion, so Reagan being always proven correct has deeper meaning for all of history in his naming people traitors and phoneys.
His greatest warning in his letters today are the dangers of a national health care system which will ruin American health care and how it is only a power grab by socialists to gain more control over America for their rule. It will be the 2008 election and Hillary Clinton as part of her agenda is to implement that national health care. Reagan's voice rings eternal in warning America of what is right and what is wrong.
I would have enjoyed the book more if the letters would have have been his living legacy of God given wisdom more and less of the facts in trying to prove to ignorant people he really was a good soul. I already knew that like most Americans and we didn't require convincing.
The book though proves Reagan was the genuine person on camera or off. He and his lovely wife, Nancy, endured more from their children and petty personalities than anyone ever should have to. Americans owe them an eternal thank you and an even more deeper gratitude to God in guiding this American's life who revolutionized America and the world and whose "shining city on a hill" is still moving the entire world.
That is legacy a generation later and I still love that old man.
Fascinating look at one man's view of history.......2006-02-24
Reading this book, its impossible to escape a few conclusions. First, Reagan was a very warm and cordial man. Regardless of your political views, his decency and civility are very much missed in today's Washington. Next, Reagan was obviously someone who has a grasp of his material. Whether you agreed with him or not, reading this book and others that have reproduced his correspondence, speeches etc. that he drafted personally will forever shatter the mythical "amiable dunce" that his opponents were quick to embrace. Finally, I got a much better sense of the Reagan the man than any biography I've read so far. Interestingly, one gets a MUCH better sense of Reagan the man and the President than from his autobiography, which was fairly mediocre in comparison.

Book Description
This volume tells the story of the conquest of the Dervish Empire, culminating at Omdurman: one of the great desert battles in the imperial drama of the Victorian era. This dramatic conflict witnessed hordes of native warriors set against British discipline and firepower, gunboats on the Nile, a dramatic cavalry charge and Kitchener, the Sirdar, as conqueror. This book explores the events, weaponry and leaders of both sides, and accompanying illustrations and colourful graphics bring the whole campaign vividly to life.

Well-written account of the Battle.......2005-11-07
The Battle of Omdurman was one of the greatest and bloodiest battles ever fought on African soil, some estimates put the casualties to 40 000 dead and wounded - almost all of them being ansar of the Mahadiyya, whereas the British and Egyptian-Sudanese had only 48 dead. This battle saw a largely tribal army of warriors, despite all their heroic courage, being defeated by a modern army with superiour firepower from quick-firing artillery, machine-guns and repeating rifles, but also an old-fashioned cavalry charge with lance and sword of the 21st lancers.
Donald Featherstone's book is a fascinating account not only of the battle of Omdurman, but also of the entire re-conquest of the Sudan including the battles of Firket, Aby Hamed, Atbara and Umm Diwaykarat. There are numerous good maps and illustrations. Perhaps most interesting are the set of photographs actually shot during the battle, showing the anglo-egyptian army manouvering and firing volleys at the opponents. Very rare and really unique photographs of an authentic 19th century battle! Unfortunatley though there are no artist's illustration as in later Osprey-books, but the photographs and other illustrations make up that.
This was the first Osprey-book I bought, and it still remains one of my favourites among the more than 50 books I own today. Highly recommended!

Crimea: The Great Crimean War, 1854-1856
ASIN: 0850529948 |
Book Description
The death of General Gordon in Khartoum at the hand of the Dervishes, the followers of the fanatical Mahdi, is one of the most celebrated events in the history of the 19th Century. Equally dramatic and colorful, but perhaps less well-known, is the extraordinary battle fourteen years later in which Kitchener avenged the murder of Gordon at Omdurman, just across the Nile from Khartoum.
The story of the battle which followed, a clash between spears, swords and frenzied courage on the one hand and the grim application of rifle and gunboat fire on the other, is breathtaking, bizarre and beautifully handled by the author. Towards the climax came the last great cavalry charge in history, that of the 21st Lancers, made memorable by one of the young officers who led it, Winston Churchill.
Customer Reviews:
Surely, now Gordon is avenged!.......2005-12-30
This is a really well-written account on the battle of Omdurman in 1898, and the preparation leading up to it. There is also a brief description of the unsuccessful relief expedition to rescue Gordon in 1885, as well as the "River War" to which Omdurman was the conclusion. This is no dry-as-dust military history- it reads like a bullet. Nor is it just a recycling of previous information since the author uses personal material from journals and letters that has never before been published.
I never knew that the original start to the campaign was to be brief expedition to drive Mahdist forces from the Egyptian frontier. There was no plan to move on to Omdurman. General Kitchener appears to have talked the British and Egyptian governments into moving farther up the Nile since "he was already there- and it would be cheaper to proceed- now!" In fact Kitchener had been a young engineering officer on the unsuccessful mission to relieve Gordon in 1885 and he had long felt that Gordon's slaughter, and British honour, needed to be avenged.
The character of Kitchener is objectively examined- this is no excercise in nostalgic imperial hero worship. Kitchener really did not seem to have any true concern for the men under his command. They were a means to an end, and disposable if needs be. Nor was he a brilliant strategist. His real strength was as an engineer, which was what made this campaign work. His buillding of a military railway over the Nubian desert in record time was one of the most remarkable engineering feats of the day. His detailed knowlege of logistics was also remarkable (it was said that he knew the exact count of every bullet and biscuit in the expedition.) However, when it came to the actual fighting it was invariably a matter of direct frontal assault with overwhelming force. One officer is recorded as saying that the tactics used were not substantially changed since Waterloo.
There were a couple of notable historic footnotes to this campaign. It was the first use of high-explosive artillery shells in actual combat. Prior to this, high explosives were too unstable to load in shells and tended to explode in the barrel. The incredible effectiveness of the new shells by the gunboats and field artillery even amazed the gunners.
It was also the last major cavalry charge in modern times. While the charge of the 21st Lancers has been glorified from the start, it was actually not ordered by Kitchener and essentially ruined their effectiveness for the recon and screening duties that he really needed them for.
The description of the actual battle reads like you are actually there. Try to imagine taking part in a fight of six brigade strength units (two British and four Sudanese and Egyptian) against perhaps 100,000 Mahdists. The fighting was done in the classic style of the front rank kneeling and the rear standing (with no cover other than a thorn bush barrier or zariba) while pouring on volley after volley. When the brigades advanced on Omdurman after the initial enemy assault they didn't even have that much cover...
This hardcover edition by Knopf is full of military-grade maps, photographs, line drawings, and really glorious full-colour reproductions of paintings and lithographs. There is a bibliography of published references.
The only other book that I have found that describes military operations of the late 19th century this well is _Showdown at Little Big Horn_ by Dee Brown.

Product Description
In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Sudan. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within Sudan and the extent to which Omdurman might be used as a point of distribution within Africa. From an economic perspective, however, Omdurman does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Omdurman over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Omdurman when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Omdurman used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Omdurman. Without Omdurman, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Sudan, Africa, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Africa and Omdurman. The data presented are the result of various spatial econometric and time-series forecasting models which, for each category presented, are applied to forecast and allocate demand across all countries of the world and major distribution centers or centers of dominant influence within each country. This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one city to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Omdurman as an area of dominant influence in Sudan and, potentially, Africa. Important Caveat. Category definitions may overlap. The sum of multiple categories, therefore, may double count.

Book Description
Exploring the challenge of rehabilitating countries after civil wars, this study finds that attempting to transform war-shattered states into liberal democracies with market economies can backfire badly. Roland Paris contends that the rapid introduction of democracy and capitalism in the absence of effective institutions can increase rather than decrease the danger of renewed fighting. A more effective approach to post-conflict peacebuilding would be to introduce political and economic reform in a gradual and controlled manner.
Customer Reviews:
Provocative but off the mark.......2007-06-21
This is a provocative and useful book. Besides making a case that the attempt to impose a liberal political and economic order on states recovering from civil war often fails and is sometimes a disaster, Paris provides a nice introduction to several of the most important recent attempts at international post-conflict reconstruction.
But Paris' argument is oversimplified, and sometimes just plain wrong. He paints the international effort as ideologically unified around a liberal order, when in fact those carrying out the economic program (neoliberalism) scarcely talk to those carrying out the political reforms and reconstruction. In fact, the complaint that the two work at cross purposes -- with World Bank and IMF reformers insisting on economic austerity ("fiscal stability"), liberalization, and privatization policies that undermine efforts to provide people with a "peace payoff" -- has become common among those who work and write in this area.
Paris also worries that, in failing to address the poverty and inequality that lay at the root of civil conflicts, the international community has laid the groundwork for future conflicts even in success cases like El Salvador. In fact, the evidence is that political reforms that incorporate dissident elites into the political system satisfied the central "root cause" of civil war. There is lots of inequality and poverty around the world, but it rarely leads to civil war without a political leadership determined to mobilize people against what they see as a repressive and exclusionary regime.
Finally, Paris proposes an alternative model that would have the international community playing a more directive role, taking over the civil administration of countries recovering from civil conflict until institutions are strong enough to manage democracy and economic liberalization. But he ignores the fact that most civil conflicts leave governments standing that are strong enough -- and determined enough -- to resist international meddling. Even in Cambodia, where the UN was given sweeping powers to oversee the civil administration, the Hun Sen government was determined to maintain control and there was not much UNTAC could do to stop it. The illusion that "we" can just step in and impose our agenda is widespread in this country and accounts for the notion that the United States could (and, for some, still can) bring peace and democracy to Iraq if we could just commit enough time and troops to the effort. Paris should ground his recommendations in the real world and not in American fantasies of omnipotence.
This Book Deserves More Attention.......2006-07-21
It is stunning that so little attention has been given to reviewing this book yet. This volume is one that advances preconditions for successful democratic nation building, based upon a series of recent case studies (such as Angola, Rwanda, Cambodia, Liberia, Bosnia, Croatia, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Namibia, and Mozambique). This is one of a series of works (such as The RAND volume, America's Role in Nation-Building;Fukuyama's State-Building; etc.) that address what it takes to create new democratic states that will ensure.
Roland Paris addresses an issue that initially seems far afield--peacebuilding. However, his analysis ends up very much on the mark for better understanding democratic nation building. For Paris, peacebuilding represents ". . .postconflict missions". . .with ". . .the goal of preventing a recurrence of violence" (Paris, 2004: 2). What does this have to do with nation building? As he explains (2004: 5):
Peacebuilding missions in the 1990s were guided by a
generally unstated but widely accepted theory of conflict
management: the notion that promoting "liberalization" in
countries that had recently experienced civil war would
help to create the conditions for a stable and lasting
peace. In the political realm, liberalization means
democratization, or the promotion of periodic and genuine
elections, constitutional limitations on the exercise of
government power, and respect for basic civil
liberties. . . .
On the economic side, liberalization refers, according to Paris, to the movement toward a market economy model. His study of a series of postconflict situations finds this liberal economic democracy model a common end goal of peacebuilders. In effect, what he terms peacebuilding looks very much like what others call democratic nation building.
Paris argues that the most promising strategy is IBL---Institutionalization Before Liberalization, that is, that peacebuilders should not immediately move toward economic and political liberalization. Rather, they should first (re)build institutions so that there is a stable base. Among the steps in this process are:
1. Wait until conditions are conducive for elections to
take place.
2. Design electoral systems to reward moderate parties
and candidates.
3. Work to develop a stable civil society.
4. Head off the emergence of "hate" speech.
5. Develop conflict-reducing economic policies.
6. In short, rebuild effective state institutions.
For Paris, there needs to be a two-step process: first, build institutions as a foundation; second, construct liberal structures on that foundation.
This means time and hard work. For successful democratic nation-building, patience is needed--and understanding thast the process must be carefully managed with uncertain outcomes. In short, this is a must read on the subject of what it takes to produce successful nation-building.

Customer Reviews:
Most comprehensive guide you'll ever own.......2004-10-14
I am a huge fish enthusiat and this book is the most informative and useful guide to fresh water fishes I have ever seen. I've seen other books from other states and have countless field guides, but Fishes of Tennesse wins hands down. The pictures and illustrations really help you figure out what you may have collected. This book is a must for native fishes enthusiats.
Simply the best........2002-08-23
Whether you are an professional ichthyologist, a collector of native fishes or just someone who is curious about the aquatic fauna found in Tennessee, this is the book for you. Tennessee has more species of fishes found within its borders than any other state. This book is extremely well written and should prove an excellent value. It is simply the best available.
Excellent!.......1999-08-09
One of the most detailed and comprehensive regional ichthyofaunal guides available. A must for the freshwater fisheries biologist.
Easy to read, color photographs, detailed life histories.......1997-05-16
Anyone interested in the waters and fish fauna of Tennessee will HAVE to procure this book. With complete species and taxonomic descriptions of all native and exotic fish, this book also provides intimate details concerning ecology, behavior, and evolution of the class Osteichthyes. Beautiful color photos of living specimens make identification a pleasant experience using the detailed keying information. Though not inexpensive, its price is less than most other books in its class. For a technical taxonomic work it is very easy to read. I highly recommend it for any naturalist interested in aquatic fauna of the region

Description:
Variations of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) concentrations in a southern reservoir lake (Cane Creek Lake, Cookeville, TN, USA) in relation to solar radiation were investigated consecutively from June 2003 to May 2004. The daytime DGM levels in the lake exhibited a two-phase diurnal trend; the DGM concentrations rose in the morning, peaked around noontime and then fell in the afternoon through the evening; these trends followed the general pattern of diurnal solar radiation variations. The morning and afternoon phases appeared to be asymmetrical with the former relatively steep and the latter gradual. A variety of daytime DGM level variations other than the typical two-phase diurnal patterns were also observed. For the time spans studied, the daytime mean DGM concentrations of the lake ranged from 12 to 68 pg L^-^1 (60-340 fM). The daytime mean DGM levels in the summertime (June, July, August) showed values above 30 pg L^-^1 (150 fM) in most cases and a large number of peak DGM concentrations above 50 pg L^-^1 (250 fM). The summer DGM levels in the lake appear to be comparable to those observed in the large northern lakes for the summertime. The daytime DGM levels in the lake were found to correlate with solar radiation to various degrees (cases of r values above 0.8: ~12% and ~18% of the total sampling days for correlation with global solar radiation and UVA radiation, respectively). Correlating trends are recognizable between the daytime mean DGM concentration and the corresponding mean global solar radiation (r=0.66, p
<0.0005) and between the daytime mean DGM concentration and the corresponding mean UVA radiation (r=0.62, p
<0.0005).
