Book Description
At last, in his own words, Bob Dole tells his legendary World War II story –– a personal odyssey of tremendous courage, sacrifice, and faith.
In One Soldier's Story, Bob Dole tells the moving, inspirational story of his harrowing experience in World War II, and how he overcame life–threatening injuries long before rising to the top of the U.S. Senate. As a platoon leader in the famed 10th Mountain Division, twenty–one–year–old Bob Dole was gravely wounded on a hill in the Italian Alps just two weeks before the end of the war. Trying to pull his radioman to safety during a fire–fight against a fortified German position, Dole was hit with shrapnel across his right shoulder and back. Over the next three years, not expected to survive, he lapsed in and out of a coma, lost a kidney, lost the use of his right arm and most of the feeling in his left arm. But he willed himself to live.
Drawing on nearly 300 never–before–seen letters between him and his family during this period, Dole offers a powerful, vivid portrait of one man's struggle to survive in the closing moments of the war. With insight and candour, Dole also focuses on the words, actions, and selfless deeds of countless American heroes with whom he served, including two fellow injured soldiers who later joined him in the Senate, capturing the singular qualities of his generation. He speaks here not as a politician, but as a wounded G.I. who went on to become one of our nation's most respected statesmen. In doing so, he gives us a heartfelt story of uncommon bravery and personal faith –– in himself, his fellow man, and a greater power. This is the World War II chronicle that America has been waiting for.

"
Before he became one of America's most respected statesmen, Bob Dole was an average citizen serving heroically for his country. The bravery he showed after suffering near-fatal injuries in the final days of World War II is the stuff of legend. Now, for the first time in his own words, Dole tells the moving story of his harrowing experience on and off the battlefield, and how it changed his life.
Speaking here not as a politician but as a wounded G.I., Dole recounts his own odyssey of courage and sacrifice, and also honors the fighting spirit of the countless heroes with whom he served. Heartfelt and inspiring,
One Soldier's Story is the World War II chronicle that America has been waiting for.

A true hero.......2007-07-20
What an amazing person with a great story to tell. I was able to track him down and talk with him personnally and he truely is a hero.
A Memoir Worth Reading.......2007-07-04
I knew that Bob Dole was injured in World War II but never knew where or how. I found his Memoir, "One Soldier's Story" interesting to read. Sharing his personal story of his rehabilitation gives one an appreciation for those who are recovering today from injuries that they have received in Iraq or Afghanistan. I'm glad that he didn't give up and took that "longest walk" and later became a U.S. Senator.
My father was stationed not far from where Bob Dole was shot and did not know that Mr. Dole was one of the wounded passing by to the hospital. After my father read this book, his comment was "The 10th Mountain was a Great Division."

This man should have been President........2006-09-21
This is a nice story about one politician's experience in the war. This story shows his real personality behind all the publicity about his presidential runs. I gained new admiration for Dole. He not only has a sense of humor after his life crippling experience in WWII. Dole is shot and the bullet is lodged near his spine. He has difficulty using his hands and feet. Only his willpower prevented him from living a non productive experience the rest of his life. Dole gets some hand and feet motion, goes on to university and law school and represents his native Kansas in Washington. This is indeed a success story.
The book is easily readable. One gets a new admiration for this politician when you read this book. A good read.
Much about the man, little about politics.......2006-09-04
Young people might recognize Bob Dole as a former politician who now occasionally does a few commercials, most of which include some self-deprecating humor. People who are a bit older will recognize him as the man whom Bill Clinton defeated in a Presidential campaign, a long-term Senator, and the Vice Presidential running-mate to former President Gerald Ford. Everyone who sees Bob Dole will likely notice that there is something wrong with his right arm, and some will know that this was a war injury.
There is much more to Bob Dole, the man, than that, and it can be found in this moving, sometimes humorous, always straightforward memoir, that focuses most on his life from early childhood through his recuperation from his injuries in World War Two.
"One Soldier's Story" starts by describing Mr. Dole's childhood and adolescence, growing up in Russell, Kansas. We learn much about his family and his community, with a strong emphasis on the character of the people who had an impact on Bob Dole. The phrase "it takes a village to raise a child" has often been mentioned in recent years, but here is a good description of how the people in one's life affect how a person will turn out. Mr. Dole tells about how many people, through what they said and by how they lived, taught him much, and prepared him to face a challenge bigger than any political campaign could ever be.
Once we know about how Mr. Dole lived into early adulthood, we then learn a lot about how World War Two affected this nation, and how it dramatically affected Mr. Dole. Bob Dole went through a lot of training, both basic and technical, before ever stepping foot on a battlefield in northern Italy, right near the end of the war. Once he reached that battlefield, though, he suffered life-threatening injuries that profoundly affected him physically, and equally profoundly challenged his character. Using the values he learned as a child and young man, and with the support of his family, his friends, and many dedicated professionals, Bob Dole met that challenge.
"One Soldier's Story" is a well-written memoir, that moves along briskly, while giving you a very clear sense of who Bob Dole is, both by what he tells you, and by the very direct, straightforward way in which he tells his story. This is a very tough man, but not "tough" in the sense of being rough or mean, but in the sense of being incredibly resilient, adaptable, steadfast, and determined. Mr. Dole also makes it clear that the credit for his successes belongs to many, many people. He repeatedly makes it clear how much he owes to many people, and ends the book by moving to the bigger picture of how much the people of this nation owe those who serve it, and by how we all have the potential to make a positive effect on those around us.
I am not, in general, a big fan of autobiographies or memoirs, but I really enjoyed this fine book about a good man. There is very little about Bob Dole the politician in the book; as suggested by the title, this book is mainly about how Mr. Dole's military experience impacted his life.
While I have led a very different life from Mr. Dole, I found much in this book that was reinforcing and inspirational. I am a quadriplegic from a diving accident when I was fifteen, and I clearly identify with the challenges that Mr. Dole has faced, and with how the support of family and friends can strongly impact a person's ability to succeed, despite the adversities of life.
I think that this book would be enjoyable and important to many people, regardless of their political beliefs. I strongly recommend it.
One Kansan to Another.......2006-08-23
This book tells a marvelous story about a great American and a wonderful small hometown. Since my husband and I are native Kansans it meant more to us than it would to many people. It puts the heart into 'heartland' and is a story of patriotism as well as overcoming difficulties. The true story is told in a matter of fact way, as if any of us could over come the same odds. Anyway, we found it a very readable book and highly recommend it.

It Can Happen.......2003-12-07
This is a rare find indeed, but alas it can happen. It is not often in my life that I have found a book where the story is told with such integrity and can still hold my interest. This book is the perfect combination of these qualities. This book confirms my belief that honesty is the only policy and that reality is more interesting than fiction.
Coming from a generation behind the author I can truly say I am proud to be the recipient of the legacy that will be left as this generation matures. I hope my generation lives up to this legacy and maintains the respect for this country and its ideals that the author and many like him have.
This is the type of read I long for in my neverending search for good books.Although I have little time to sit with any book this particular one forced me to sit with it until I was at the end.

Book Review: Bury Me With Soldiers
Author: C. W. Standiford

From the Valley of the Shadow... by Bob Gray
I've spent the last thirty-five years avoiding books and movies about Vietnam. The few I was exposed to infuriated me for their absolute refusal to see any good in what we did, or to appreciate the sacrifice our soldiers made. It never mattered to me who ran the country, nor did I buy into the Domino Theory - a McNamara creation that proved to be, like the man, a lie. What mattered to me were the American lives lost in a half-hearted pursuit of - not victory - peace. Then I discovered the book by Wayne Standiford; Bury Me With Soldiers.
This is the story of how one average guy - average size, average intelligence, average outlook, life, and concerns - grew up and grew old in a few months of combat. The hopeless numbness that sets in after days of going from boredom to terror in one word - "incoming!" - is chilling in it's dissection of warfare on the human spirit. We watch as a callus grows over the author's heart, and his soul goes into remission to await the all-clear siren. And mail call.
We meet Standiford as a high school senior. A friend of his who had graduated the year before dies in Vietnam. From the universal frustrations of high school (the drudgery of studying subjects you know you'll never use, to sex - and the lack thereof) to the middle-class values still prevalent but losing ground in the 1960's, author Standiford's life and choices mirror the particulars of millions of men caught on one side or another of the Vietnam war dilemma.
Beset by the normal doubts and aspirations of any American teenager, he stands at his personal crossroads and wonders aloud what to do. The sixties were, as has been described by an endless array of social scientists, a disaffecting time for those of us then reaching adulthood. The old parameters of "America, Mom, and Apple Pie" were no longer enough. Not merely not enough - they were openly ridiculed. Jingoism was often the appellation applied. Bedrock beliefs were overturned with nothing to replace them. As someone else wrote about that period, America was ripe for a dictator. Free love played into the hands of every teenage boy who wanted to get laid more than anything else on earth. The beckoning hedonism was hard to resist.
But some did. In a seamless progression Standiford shows us that some took seriously the idea that America was worth fighting for - even if the reasoning behind the fight might be flawed. The author was such a man. Standiford joined the Marines, went through Recon training and scuba diving school, and set off to destroy the enemy to the best of his ability. He did so without reservation. Then.
In a recent email from Mr. Standiford, he told me the following: "I wouldn't take a million dollars for the experience - and I wouldn't do it over again for two million." Besides dating him (when a million dollars was big money), the statement describes my own attitude and that of most of the vets I know.
The story he tells called up memories without being predictable. Several times the unexpected sentence made me laugh out loud - a tough row to hoe when discussing mortar round-amputated limbs and burned bodies. And the honesty of this work is mesmerizing. Standiford's early loss of heart and how he dealt with it tells us what we need most desperately to know about any author: Can I trust his word? We find that, indeed, we must. No one would admit to the things he does and lie about lesser things.
His description of real people, men whose names should be engraved on our hearts, is riveting. The men with whom he served, Meatball, Tut, Ernie, Mac, and Doc, will always be a part of Wayne Standiford. The pain of seeing a friend lose an arm, a leg, life; the exhilaration of returning from the bush as a whole person one more time; the devastation experienced when the fickle love back home sends a Dear John letter; the unreasoning fear that becomes commonplace while sitting in a hole in the ground half-filled with water as mortar rounds creep ever closer; these too will always be a part of him. They become a part of us when we read his story.
The acceptance of the simple but horrific fact that man-hunting is suddenly legal can be discouraging (which means, literally, to lose one's courage). That so many American boys became men while undergoing this terrifying experience says much for this country and the values we continue to hold dear. That they did it despite attempts, by those Americans who hate America, to convince them they were all criminals for being there says much for the integrity and courage of the individual men. To this day the prevalent notion (and an awful lie) that all our military men came back junkies and killers continues to blacken the sacrifice they made.
So to all those men and women who survived and those who died trying to save a tiny country from the communist dictatorship that eventually did engulf and murder those with the temerity to stand against the Stalinist horde - I've never had the opportunity to say this before: Thank you.
That our faint-hearted politicians wasted your efforts, and many of your lives, does not reflect badly upon you - only on them. You stood up when your country asked you to. And I appreciate it, even if I prove to be the only one. You hear the complaint repeated endlessly nowadays: Where are our heroes? The answer is that they are all around us - many of us just don't want to admit it.
And my most profound thanks to Wayne Standiford for sharing his story with me and all who care to know what really happened there. If I can't occupy the plot next to yours, then I ask the same thing you do: please, Bury Me with Soldiers.
Bury Me With Soldiers: One Grunt's Honest Story ..................2003-08-22
I read an awful lot of books about the Vietnam war and those who survived it- I have my own little library in fact. Some books are good, some are not so good. Some are filled with so much tactical jargon or language that an average person cannot even get through to decide if they like the book! Some just sounds like one person pounding their chest real hard!
This is not one of those books. It is hands down one of the best books I have ever read on any subject. I am not sure I can explain why his words touched me so. But I think it is because he wrote not from a researcher's point of view, but a survivors point of view. Not from second hand- but from his own memories, his own heart, sadness, joys, anger, hate and sometimes humor. You can't make that up. No matter your talent, you were either there, or you were not and people know the difference. He is the real McCoy.
When I read his book it felt like he was sitting right there in my living room- as if he was my old friend come back from a long stay away from my home. And he sat there in my oldest most comfortable chair, kicked off his shoes and told me about everything that had happened since last we met. Some of his story made me laugh so hard I couldn't not stop- like when he got to boot camp. There were times when I thought my heart would break, and there were times, like when I closed that book, that I wondered how in the world did any man or woman ever survive that war, not just physically, but mentally, spiritually- for that, he is my hero. Yes he did some powerful things as a soldier no question, he was decorated for that more than once. But more than that, he is my hero because he wrote personally about things that we all need to read if we will ever, ever begin to understand how Vietnam was different for our soldiers. It is not easy to put everything you own personally in your heart on paper for other people to dissect. He is brave and I think this book should be read by every American.
A glimpse I couldn't have gotten otherwise,..........2003-06-18
As the editor and publisher of our county newspaper, I must read a great deal, and have gotten very particular about what I really enjoy reading- and I LOVED this book.
With a son in the military, three brothers who served in the military in the Vietnam era, and with a Dad who served in WWII, I have never really known what they faced, what they struggled with, and what a shock it must have been to be taken from "Hometown" to defending our country halfway around the world. The author skillfully walks us through his time in 'Nam, and I feel I've gotten a glimpse of thoughts and feelings, fears and emotions, that I could never have gotten otherwise.
I sent the book to my son and his wife, and they both love it also- (and my daughter-in-law finished it before my son!) We have compared notes, and decided we truly LOVE the way this author writes. I intend to check and see if Mr. Standiford has written other books, because if he has, I'm sold.
I've purchased books before, dug into them, and then struggled to even WANT to finish them because I was disappointed in the quality, and didn't feel the author delivered what he promised. Standiford delivers MORE than he promises- I was never disappointed and I found myself arranging my schedule so I could hurry up and get back to the book!
In short- this is a great book.
This Book Should Be Required Reading!.......2003-05-07
I loved this book! Thank you to the author Wayne Standiford for not only serving his country, but for sharing the experience in an honest, straightforward, and also sometimes hilarious way.
A true story, this book is a study in character of a 19 year-old who chose to serve his country in an unpopular war. Along the way, he is confronted by a myriad of decisions, from something simple like refusing to cheat to help a fellow soldier pass basic to leading his men in battle. He somehow manages to volunteer for everything, including joining recon and extending his tour of duty in the war zone.
By nature or instincts or upbringing, the young soldier makes the right choices when confronted with difficult decisions. He enters the marines a boy out of high school and leaves the war a man who has earned the respect of his fellow soldiers and his countrymen.
This is an enjoyable book that makes you proud to live in a country where a man's character can be so tested and that man can shine so brightly in those moments.
I think this book should be required reading in high school. It would help prepare kids for the challenges they face and give them a bit of a compass. The book also has a way of putting things in perspective. When I think about the problems in my life versus what this soldier faced, they seem pretty trivial.
I wish everyone could read this book. They would be proud of the author and of our country.

Book Description
This is the story of a seventeen year old boy who ran away from home to join the Canadian Army at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. It describes the fateful adventures of two regiments dispatched to the Pacific to face the Japanese, and the courage of two thousand young soldiers who, when faced with an impossible task thousands of miles from home, behaved with honour and distinction. Though they lost the battle of Hong Kong, they succeeded in showing the world the mettle of which they were made.
Customer Reviews:
An unforgettable memoir.......2003-03-31
It is a story about a Canadian soldier, George MacDonell who was sent to Hong Kong and fought with the Japanese during the World War II. In this book MacDonell started with how he became a Canadian soldier and then described how he was sent to the Pacific War zone during the World War II. When the Canadian army lost the battery in Hong Kong, he became the prisoner of War. He depicted how the Japanese in the Prison of War camp in Hong Kong, then Japan treated him and other soldiers. After years in the prison, he was eventually released in the year of 1945. He then described how he struggled through and became a successful businessman. It is an excellent memoir. The only minor "mistake" is the inconsistent of the names of the place. For instance, the Hong Kong Tai Tam Reservoir sometimes is romanized as "Ty Tam Reservoir." Other than that, the book is well written and organized.

Book Description
This is the second of three books chronicling the author's life during his three-year enlistment in the US Army. This book describes the author's Army experiences from August, 1967, when he left electronics school at Fort Gordon, Georgia, through December, 1968, when he was transferred to Vietnam from an aviation maintenance center at Mannheim, West Germany. Repairing helicopter electronic communication and navigation systems, repairing airborne navigation radios and serving as a lieutenant colonel's aide are thoroughly described. Included are extensive descriptions of an Army soldier's lifestyle while stationed in Europe in that era as are the author's numerous travel experiences.
Customer Reviews:
Thinking about the Army?.......2004-04-15
Anyone who is thinking about enlisting in the service should read Richard Stahl's book about his experiences in the Army. This is an interesting account of the year that the author spent in Europe while serving at various duty stations in Germany. The book also relates the author's experiences during his free time spent in Spain. A well written documentation of a year in the life of Mr. Stahl. I enjoyed the fact that the story was real and written for people like me to read.

Book Description
William Hudson's critical and provocative text urges students not just to think about how American democracy functions, but also to examine why American democracy has become what it is today. Hudson identifies eight major challenges to the strength of the political system, directly laying out the ways in which these developments erode the very foundations of American democracy: Does judicial activism eliminate the voice of the people in American policymaking? To what extent should Americans sacrifice their civil liberties in the interest of national security? Does the "American Dream" still exist given the degree of inequality in the United States?
Ever challenging students' apathy or antipathy of politics, Hudson provides critical, but balanced recommendations for reform, while emphasizing that the strength of the U.S. political system rests on the ability to respond successfully to these pressing issues. Important new coverage in this fifth edition includes:
- The disparity between low- and high-income residents of the Gulf Coast that was thrown into vivid relief after Hurricane Katrina, revealing deeply embedded social, economic, and political inequality in the United States.
- Judicial appointment politics that allow the president to promote ideological values in an undemocratic manner.
- Stunted "sound bite" media coverage and candidate-centered campaigning that discourage Americans from deliberating and exercising their voices on national policy concerns.
- The Bush administration's approaches to fighting terror and upholding democracy in the world that may, in fact, jeopardize democratic values.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading Propaganda.......2006-12-23
This book is well written -- it is easy to read and in many senses incredibly engaging. The book is well organized, argued, and paced to fit the interested college reader.
It in unfortunate, then, that the entire premise of the book is misleading, and that the arguments are appallingly and unblinkingly one-sided. The title, American Democracy in Peril, should immediately hint at a major problem: Though working on many principles of democracy, America is not and has never been a true and direct democracy, nor was it ever meant to be. Hudson ignores this simple fact available in any grade school Social Studies textbook to make his point.
Hudson's points are, as well, virtually entirely one sided. All but a few of his arguments are completely liberal, and some, especially the section on Radical Individualism, are communist. Such a position would be all fine and good if Hudson ever acknowledged that the other side might have a few good arguments. Instead, Hudson mercilessly attacks conservative and (especially) libertarian viewpoints, in many cases arguing for the case of argument, even when the other case does have merit.
Such a book would be fine for personal reading -- the Republicans and Libertarians have sold millions of copies of similar books -- but being as it is a textbook, such flaws are inexcusable. To present undergraduate students with a work that is written using specific knowledge and layers of defensive argumentation, especially when presented as background material or well-grounded scholarly opinions is dangerously pushing open minds into a corner where they are not permitted to be open, but rather constrained to one viewpoint that does not even begin to acknowledge any others.
In sum, William Hudson's American Democracy in Peril is, though well written, a non-scholarly, one-sided, often hostile work that should be viewed as one-side of the argument, and not the entire argument itself.
Well thought out and persuasive.......2006-01-03
I am a college student at Temple University and I had to read this book for my political science class. I thought this book was very well thought out and persuasive. In the book, Hudson explains eight reasons why America falls short of being a true democracy.
I learned very much from this book and I suggest it to somebody who wants to learn about the United States' democratic system and how it could work better!

Description:
Two low-cost and user-friendly models were developed in an effort to allow small Mediterranean municipalities to evaluate the water resources availability and wastewater reuse importance in their municipal districts. The Water Resources Balance Model (WRBM) ranks each municipal district in four categories according to an innovating scoring methodology based on the adequacy of the existing water resources for potable and irrigation needs. The Wastewater Reuse Importance Model (WRIM) was then used to evaluate the importance of wastewater reuse in water resources balance based on a scoring procedure in which the amount of reusable wastewater was compared with various scenarios of irrigation shortages and needs. The models were applied to 82 municipal districts from the prefecture of Heraklion in the island of Crete. WRBM evaluated eight districts as water scarce while 72% of the districts are water adequate. WRIM evaluated that in 67% of the districts, wastewater reuse is incapable of playing any role of any importance since either water is adequate or the shortage is so great and/or the produced wastewater volume is insignificant by comparison. In total, in only 11 of the districts could wastewater reuse be considered as an important alternative water resource.

Description:
Alcohol distilleries are highly water intensive units generating large volumes of high strength wastewater that poses a serious environmental concern. This study aimed at identifying options for improved water use in this sector through a case study in a local distillery. It emerged that optimization of cooling tower operation, innovative ways to reuse wastewater streams like spent lees and spentwash and employing semi-continuous/continuous fermentation could reduce water use in distilleries.

Description:
This study primarily assesses rainwater supply and demand for Taipei City elementary school to develop a method to derive the rainwater reuse system. This work will help planners build water reuse systems for the sites, and facilitate the water demand of school. This study also analyzes rainfall records from fifteen weather stations in Taipei City to evaluate the rainfall changes in the region's morphology, and measures the rainfall supply in the sub-district of Taipei. The effect of water demand factors is also analyzed with linear regressions applied to estimate the change in monthly water demand for Taipei elementary schools. This work assumes that 35% of total water demand can replaced with rainwater. This work creates an active model for comparisons of each Taipei elementary site rainwater supply trend, demand drift, and maximum rainwater use percentage based on the rainwater reuse system. The efficacy of implementing rainwater reuse in Taipei is identified.

Description:
With water conservation efforts accelerating in arid environments, industrial wastewater is considered a candidate for reuse. We investigated the possibility of using high-TDS (total dissolved solids) blowdown water from cooling towers to irrigate common landscape plants in a desert, urban environment. Nine species (three desert legume trees, three xeric-adapted shrubs and three groundcovers) were planted in a replicate block design on a 0.2ha site. Each plant was irrigated according to water demand determined by the soil moisture deficit, with one of three water treatments: blowdown water (3.65dSm^-^1, 2340mgl^-^1), well water (0.52dSm^-^1, 335mgl^-^1) and a 1:1 blend (2.09dSm^-^1, 1340mgl^-^1). Water uptake, plant growth rates and soil salinity were monitored over a 27 month period. Irrigation rates were reduced for the final 12 months of the study to more closely match standard landscape practices. All plants grew well over the study and irrigation salinity did not have a significant effect (p>0.05) on growth or water use. Soil salinities were higher in basins irrigated with blowdown water compared to those irrigated with well water, but soil salinities did not increase significantly over time for any treatment. Soil solution salinities on the blowdown treatment were in the range of 6400-15,000mgl^-^1, showing that these species have considerable tolerance. The overall feasibility of reusing industrial brines to irrigate urban landscapes is discussed in light of the results.
