4 out of 5 stars About a boy and his dog... .......2007-01-23

This book is the story of Willie Morris' childhood companion, a dog named Skip. Willie recounts his adolescent years and all the fond memories of his dog and friends as they grew up together in small town Mississippi. The story is heartwarming and the author paints a very clear picture of all the shenanigans, good times and bad that he and his dog had together over the years. I liked this book; but I think a male reader would appreciate the bond between a boy and his dog more than I can.

5 out of 5 stars My Dog Skip.......2007-01-19

This is a wonderful and touching story. It is a good read, and I recommend it to anyone who has ever had a pet. I especially like that it has a jack russell in the story.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book!.......2006-03-18

This was a great book! It was so touching and heartfelt. I love dogs and this book is an example of someone who loves dogs like me so I can connect! Greatly recomended!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best dog stories I have ever read.......2006-03-17

Willie Morris was a truly great author! This story of his childhood with his dog was really heartwarming. It is so simple and warm and humorous, you will just love it. Warning: you will cry your eyes out at the end, but it's worth the pain. One of the best animal stories ever, I hope many kids read this in school. If you loved the movie "A Christmas Story" you will love this book. The movie version of "My Dog Skip" is also quite good, though it is kind of upsetting that in order to create drama the wonderful father of the book is kind of nasty in the movie. Willie Morris was a great author who also wrote a cat book entitled "My Cat Spit McGee" and several books about his life that remind me a little of Russel Baker's memoirs. One is entitled "North Toward Home", another "Good Old Boy" and one is about life in New York City.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Told.......2004-01-06

Willie Morris has recounted the life of not just a boyhood pet, but a dear and close friend.
The Story of Skip's life as told by his owner is full of mythic adventures of childhood. Where every new day was full of joy and wonder. Morris' storytelling brings the dog, his family and the lush southern landscape into full and brilliant view.
When you read My Dog Skip you can just feel how much this young man loved and revered his dog.
Any of us who have had a much loved pet know that the bond between animal and human can reach so much further than just "pet and owner". Willie Morris makes the statement that Skip wasn't just his dog, but his brother... that is a beautiful thing. Morris grew up an only child but did not feel alone by any stretch of the imagination. He was loved deeply by and deeply loved his dog Skip.
Another great point made in this book is how Willie Morris learned so much from his dog Skip. He clearly states that the most lasting lessons he has learned about love and loyalty came from knowing his dog.
This book captures so well the love a boy or any human being can have for a pet... I loved the story and highly recommend it!

The classic tale is told with refreshing new charm and innocence by a man who, 40 years later, still clearly recalls the magic of those golden days spent with his irrepressible fourlegged companion. Willie, nine years old, and Skip, a bright-eyed fox terrier, grow up together in their sleepy Mississippi town. They fish, chase squirrels, fall in love with the same girl, and play endless games of catch. Skip waits for Willie at the end of each school day, and when summer begins, they are inseparable pals. Willie Morris' joyous tale recalls a nostalgic time in America and the optimism following the end of World War II. But Willie's final thoughts about his special relationship with Skip speak of more enduring things. "The dog of your boyhood teaches you a great deal about friendship, and love, and death: Old Skip was my brother." "With true artistry and exquisite writing, Morris portrays an America rich in the tradition of decency and good humor."---Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump, AudioFile praises the narrator: "Muller chearly expresses the deep emotions of a young boy..." Burgess provides information that was unavailable to Paul Brickhill for his 1950 book on the Great Escape. Burgess provides fascinating photos from German sources, now also available online, of the goon towers of Stalag Luft III, Tom's trap, Harry from various angles, etc. Fascinating new details have also come to light. Consider, for instance, the depths of the tunnels. The POWs believed that placing the tunnels thirty feet down put them out of range of the microphone listening devices. It turns out that the devices still were able to pick up the sounds of the tunneling. The Germans thus knew that tunneling was going on, but were enraged at not being able to pinpoint the location of Tom for a long time and Harry up to the breakout of the 76. But the depth of the tunneling evidently made the signal diffuse enough to prevent the listeners from zeroing on the exact site of the tunnel.

Burgess describes the three Polish engineer-pilots who were responsible for the design of the traps for Tom, Dick, and Harry. Each trap had to be completely different from any other so that the Germans could not make a generalization for subsequent searches if they found one or two of them. The challenges were considerable. The initial trapmaking was a noisy operation, requiring cover noise to be made by other POWs. The trap had to be invisible to German eyes yet capable of being closed and sealed in a few tens of seconds. Harry's trap was actually the one underneath a stove. Tom's trap was found by the Germans apparently by accident. A goon reportedly dropped a pipe at or near the trap, causing the fast-drying concrete mask to chip and thus give away the trap. Burgess goes into quite a bit of detail about Dick's trap and its ingenious construction under a shower drain, and suggests that Dick's trap may yet be found by some archeologists. Years later, this is exactly what has happened. In this way, Burgess has been proved prophetic.

Burgess discusses in considerable detail the postwar search for the German criminals responsible for the murder of 50 of the 73 recaptured airmen. It is amazing how quickly suspected individuals informed on their colleagues once questioned. They kept justifying their action by referring to the Allied airmen as "terror-fliers". Burgess should have provided the proper context for this German propaganda. In fact, the very first "terror-fliers" were none other than the Germans themselves. Within hours of the beginning of World War II (the German-Soviet conquest of Poland in September-October 1939), German bombers were killing tens of thousands of Polish civilians (including those in marked hospitals) through indiscriminate bombing of unmistakable civilian targets!

5 out of 5 stars The true story behind the movie "The Great escape".......2004-11-12

The Longest Tunnel: The True Story Of World War II's Great Escape is an amazing historical chronicle of the true story behind the popular and classic World War II movie "The Great Escape", which is in turn based on the book "The Great Escape" by Paul Brickhill. Author Alan Burgess, a RAF flyer in WW II, draws upon sources that even Brickhill did not have access to, explaining how seventy-six allied POW's traveled through a 350-foot tunnel to make their mark on history. Exciting, highly readable, dramatic, and narrated in express detail.

                  4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2000-03-31

This book tells the fascinating story of a mass breakout from a WWII German POW camp (also told in the movie "The Great Escape".) However, the story is told more interestingly by someone who was there in "The Great Escape" by Paul Brickhill. I would recommend this one only if you're interested in really researching the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Another look at the Great Escape.......1995-08-25

Mr. Burgess takes us on another look at 'The Great Escape'.You may have seen the movie, you might have read PaulBrickhill's original work on the subject, but Mr. Burgess digs deep into the story for us readers. Mr. Brickhills original work suffered a bit in my opinion from the time it was publised (early 50's). People didn't want to know the full horror of the great escape. Mr. Burgess tracks down every detail to tell this story, and there is no softening of the impact nor is there any detail missing. An excellent work.

                      Book Description

"It was strangely like war. They attacked the forest as if it were an enemy to be pushed back from the beachheads, driven into the hills, broken into patches, and wiped out. Many operators thought they were not only making lumber but liberating the land from the trees. . ." from The Last Wilderness, by Murray Morgan, 1976

Derrick Jensen, prize-winning author of A Language Older than Words and The Culture of Make Believe, and George Draffan, activist, researcher, and co-author with Jensen of Railroads & Clearcuts, collaborate again to expose the escalating global war on trees. Ever since Gilgamesh cut down the ancient cedar forests of Mesopotamia, civilizations and empires have foundered and collapsed in the wake of widespread deforestation. Today, with three quarters of the world's original forests gone and the pace of cutting, clearing, processing, and pulping ever accelerating, Jensen and Draffan lay bare the stark scenario we face—we being not only people, but the nonhuman fabric of life itself—unless deforestation is slowed and stopped. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand the relationship between deforestation and our ecological crisis as well as an essential "handbook" for forest and anti-globalization activists.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ--Strangely Like War: The Global Assault on Forests.......2007-01-03

This book is a must read for anyone who has believed that the timber industry(ies) OR forest services have the forests best interests in mind. I never truly realized how timber industries throughout the world (US included) integrate themselves into the governmental structure just to get their way. It was also a shocking realization about the destruction of forests and will change your definition of what a forest really means, i.e. a forest is not a stand of monoculture planted trees but a living multitude of tree species and interwoven plant and animal life.

5 out of 5 stars A tragic story of a war happening right here........2006-12-18

This unassuming little paperbook book manages to pack a wealth of heart-wrenching, powerful facts about the terrorist massacre of our forests in under 200 pages. This wanton carnage is happening right now, yet you won't find it reported on the front page (or even the twentieth page) of the New York Times. Please read this book, and then agitate to halt these assaults if you feel compelled to do so.

                      3 out of 5 stars Need a better context.......2006-02-11

Strangely Like War is a polemic on modern mankind's habit of clearing away forests and replacing it with cities, suburbs, farms, and in the extreme cases of negligence; desert. Focusing on the USA, the authors portray the US government, specifically the US Forest Service and the US Bureau of Land Management, as complicit with the logging and paper industry in the transfer of public, forested land, over to corporations who cut the trees down. All this is true enough, though the authors could have stated their points in a more objective and less biting manner. On the other hand, the authors should have placed this trend with that manifested by the other large terrestrial mammals. For example, elephants are notorious for destroying forests tree by tree to make room for themselves. Other large mammals such as bears, giraffes, and deer manifest behavior that clears forests. Therefore, we humans are not unnaturally bad. And America specifically does a fairly good job of replacing cut trees by planting new ones; though the reduced biodiversity in the new forests is deplorable. Also, humans, especially Americans, have shown the interesting habit of converting desert landscape into green land; just look at Southern California and the four corners states. Overall, this book is quite biased though its viewpoints are worth understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Do you remember the forests?.......2004-12-12

I am struck by the other reviews of this important book: The reviewers from the West coast (who are watching the forests fall) give it high marks, while the mid-west reviewers (where the forests fell long ago) are more concerned with the tone of the book. I invite those midwesterners to come visit their western woods while some still remain. Then reread this book and see if you can share some of that anger.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook for forest education!!!.......2004-01-29

I am impressed with how concise, clear, and well researched this book is. I have bought it for all of my friends and I recommend it to forest activists everywhere. This book covers the worldwide forest crisis and how that impacts everyone from the most endangered species to the drinking water in your home. It also covers the entire history of deforestation from the rise of civilization in the Middle East through the present day. The authors' directness and honesty are refreshing. Most writers who pretend to be confronting these problems shy away from spelling out the connections between the corporations and those in government that not only allow but also encourage the destruction to continue. Thank you Jensen and Draffan for this beautifully written tool for forest education!

                          Book Description

Forces of Change takes readers on an unforgettable tour of truly global proportions. In this single volume, more than 20 of the world's most innovative and visionary scientists, writers, and scholars -- including Stephen Jay Gould, John McPhee, Lynn Margulis, Daniel Botkin, and David Quammen -- illuminate the forces that define and continue to profoundly transform our planet and all of its inhabitants. Taken together, these essays represent a dramatic range of new views and understandings about nature that have emerged over the last century. Developed by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Geographic Society, Forces of Change brings together for the first time the matchless resources of two world-renowned institutions in order to present a bold new vision of the world, which stresses the diversity, interrelatedness, and interdependence of all natural phenomena. In this vision the Earth can be viewed as a grand network of life-supporting forces operating within a single dynamic system.

Powerfully punctuated by epic photographs, eloquent illustrations, and a wonderfully dynamic design, Forces of Change is at once highly accessible and deeply thought-provoking. Full of sidebars that lucidly unpack the latest field research, the essays take readers around the world -- from the peaks of the Himalaya to the mysterious depths of the sea, and from the Ladakh cultures of northern India to the A'ani and Assiniboine tribes of Montana.

Published in conjunction with a new permanent exhibit program at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, Forces of Change is a timely and vitally important consideration of science and fate at the dawn of the 21st century.

4 out of 5 stars The pleasures of change.......2004-08-03

The joy of this book is the variety of views presented. Daniel Botkin starts with an exposition on the rate of change, and what would be considered benign. Stephen Jay Gould made a career at promoting a view of "quirky, punctuated change" of evolution that is not a gentle process. Sometimes the long view present a different view on our environmental problems as William Meson essay on Global Synergies, and the coming together of continents of Pangaea, are warnings to us of the role of exotic species. The human role in the change on earth is also discussed and perhaps the article on the Masia on Kenya's wildlife highlighted the need to not always take a western view. Some of the articles border on the profane, and perhaps the study of change is the purview of Buddhist, and the essay on learning from the Ladahk people of Tibetan plateau may be the most explicit of that.

The photographs are striking, and not always beautiful (as a burying beetle on the chest of a dead mourning dove). . The stone carving of the giraffe in the Sahara recall a distant lush past. The photographs of ritual of earth, are some of the most touching.

I received this book as a gift. I loved it & recognized that others could benefit from reading it. So I am requiring my university environmental students to use the book.

The photos are great, the writing insightful & thought-provoking, and content is great. It will warn you of some environmental problems, but will also give you hope for our future.

Georgeous photos! It's a collection of really very thought provoking essays. Cutler's, Overpecks, and Quammens were especially interesting. The sum total of the intelligence here is astounding. If tomorrow's leaders could take the time to even glance at this collection we'd all benefit. Not necessarily because solutions are offered but because one can't read these essays without taking the planets past, present and future much more seriously.
