Bought as a companion to Patti Boyd's autobiography to get the girlfriend/wife's side of the 60/70s pop music era, Marianne's book is quite depressing. After her childhood she leads the charmed life of an early singer touring and bedding many famous stars such as Bob Dylan and then is thrown together with the Rolling Stones. Most view her as Mick Jagger's girlfriend, and she was, but she also was intimately involved with Keith Richards and Brian Jones. Most readers will want to know how Mick and Keith come across and I must say, they both are treated kindly by Marianne as great people. Mick actually comes across as quite normal, not as in to drugs and drink and Marianne, Keith or Brian.
After the early history and historic drug bust of the Stones including the "girl in the fur rug", this book moves back to Marianne as she breaks up with Mick and descends into a drug hell with suicide attempts and eventually living on the street. Unfortunately, Marianne, when you are out of the public eye, your life will not be as interesting to most people and it plays out here quite depressing including her loss of parental rights to her son.
This is an excellent book to read if you have an interest in the 60s and pop music. Otherwise, I'd take a pass as it is the story of a semi-famous person who threw away much of her life. For me it was interesting as I have interests in these issues. But overall, an average book.

Hey Marianne, Now What's Your Game.......2007-07-26
The Hollies, British rock group, wrote their 1960's hit song "Hey Carrie Ann, Now What's Your Game" about Marianne Faithfull, changing the name only slightly to protect the not-so-innocent. If there's one thing for sure, she was at the heart of London during its swinging sixties, the beautiful teenaged girlfriend of Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. As they say, men wanted her, women wanted to be her: though, let's face it, quite a few women probably wanted her too. But, between her sweet teenaged hit, "As Tears Go By," written for her by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, and the present day, quite a few tears have gone by for Faithfull, convent-educated daughter of an Austrian countess. She descended into homeless drug addiction, and stayed there for a long time before she was able to pull herself out. But she has come roaring back as an iconic punk rock diva, and sometime actress: you've only got to hear her fully-adult version of "As Tears Go By," to realize just how difficult a journey it was for her.
These days, you might catch Faithfull as the feminist God in the British television comedy series, "Ab Fab." She's producing a lot of music; and she tours, backed by her edgy, punk band. I've been lucky enough to catch her several times, most memorably as she did famed German composer Bertolt Brecht's "Seven Deadly Sins"in New York: at Brooklyn's historic Brooklyn Academy of Music. And as she introduced "Blazing Away," also in Brooklyn, at Saint Ann's.
In this autobiography, co-written with rock writer David Dalton, she's more honest and open about the supposedly good years, as a Rolling Stones mascot, and the bad years, of addiction and poverty, than anyone can expect her to be. The book is full of interesting, glamorous facts and insight on the golden, Rolling Stones years of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. In addition, she's moving on the subject of how her son encouraged her to find her way back, and deeply moving in discussion of "her wall," an actual wall where she lived while homeless. You'd better check your pulse if she doesn't reach you on some level.

This book finds her at ease and at peace with her past.
intriguing.
She is very candid here.
Admitting to numerous mistakes, her faults and endless regrets.(even mentioning some episodes of temporary lunacy)and drug problems.
Almost like reading one's personal diary
It's also very comical at times. It is great in that nothing is too taboo to be included in these writings.
I read the original when it came out more than a decade ago. I must have been impressed as I remember it very well.
It's too bad my copy didn't have that lovely picture on the cover.

Marianne lifts another corner of the veil that romanticizing the sixties, and the Stones, has draped over the history and shenanigans of this Great Band.
She also has a LOT to tell about other artists, and goings-on.
On top of that, she is a keen observer and a witty writer.
I've read a lot about the Stones and their contemporaries, and Marianne's book blew me away.
If you buy just one, buy this and of course Stanley Booth's great book! Umm...

"How Could They, They Had Their Own Fish to Fry".......2005-09-07
Gloria Vanderbilt has done a fantastic job of recreating the memory book of Starr Faithfull. She's an imaginative writer who has a beautiful way with words. At first it was difficult for me to imagine the words as coming from Starr, as they seemed more to come from Gloria - no father, a neglectful mother, looking for love in all the wrong places, but then the writing drew me in so well that it didn't matter. The one part she does not explain, is why did Starr have a breakdown after her cousin Andrew raped her, since it appeared she had well-tolerated everything else he had done to her, and even sought out his company. Perhaps Starr didn't even know herself why...but there is definitely a change in tone in the book once that happens, and Ms. Vanderbilt handles it wonderfully, taking the reader into the disordered mind of young Starr, so confused and depressed, yet hopeful. But ultimately unable to find her way to the better life that she deserved.

I got chills when I read this book, and this is based on a true story. I felt like I was deeply absorbed in this world of Starr Faithfull. A seemingly perfect world with torrid secrets and emotional pain of a young woman is certainly good novel fodder for any writer. Gloria V certainly writes this story with a great quality of talent and this book is definitely a well worth read over iced tea and chocolate. Perhaps even pizza with pineapple topping and extra sauce...

The Memory Book of Starr Faithfull is entrancing and heartrending- we watch through her words to her diary, Mem, as her young life is tainted by an older man and she is led to a world of hald-madness, allowing herself to be raped and used over and over again. We teeter on the brink with her, until she takes the final step that leads to her own death.

"Private Ireland" is a wonderful book that is full of beautiful photos and information about a fascinating country, namely Ireland. Not only do you get history, you get today's furnishings with lots of information. Planning a trip to Ireland? Read this book. Want information? Read this book. It is not a travelor's book, rather, it is a wonderful way to get a romantic view of different spaces and decorating. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a glimpse of real-life Ireland.

I just could not get through this book.......2001-07-12
I was recommended this book by Amazon because of other purchases, and I thought, great: true crime, glamour, high society---all good stuff. I couldn't get more than a third of the way through this book, though, because of the author's rambling style. His run-on sentences can make you dizzy, and he'll go off on tangents in footnotes about the most irrelevant things. For example, there was a foot note that took up *half a page* about one detective marginally involved in the investigation: who his father was, how he'd joined the force, and a story about some big time gangster he'd busted---none of which had anything to do with the story of Starr Faithfull. I hope one day to be able to plow through the whole book, but for now I just set it aside.

This book is a wonderful collection of quotations that showcase the good in soceity and human nature. While there are a few pages devoted to poking at the far right, most of the book is filled with positive, uplifting thoughts. If you're a liberal, you're sure to feel a sense of pride regarding your beliefs, if you're a Conservative, it will help you to understand the REAL meaning of what it is to be a Liberal. I have been searching for a compact book of quotes to use in opening and closing arguments in court - this book is perfect! It is not so long that hours are spent searching and not so short that only the most familiar quotes are included. Instead, it has many qulates which we may have heard at one time, but they are not so cliche'ridden that we know the end of every one. Instead, it reminds us of quotes which we would like to remember, and will either buy the book to keep, or spend time "borrowing" it from friends to copy the quotes we want.
The book is loaded with quotations appropriate to issues of justice, human rights, equity, honesty, fairness and a multitude of other positive liberal American virtues. It is good reading by itself but is also invaluable for anyone who does any issue writing in any field!

This book is full of great views pertaining to both sides of global issues. By having both opinions and views and facts used in this book you can make your own choices on what you belive to be fact and what our future holds concering overpopulation, global warming, and shortages of food. It is making my global class easier to follow and helps me define my opinions before discussion in class.

This book is an amazing book on many of todays top environmental issues. One could see an issue one way before reading this book, and after that certain issue is read, and one sees the point on both sides, it could actually change ones mind. My way of thinking was changed on a few of those issues. Good book.
