We have a heritage.......2006-05-09
Mzee is deep, truly. Too bad I wasn't born early enough to experience him.
I read this book a long time ago-9 years, I was 16 then. It moved me, connected me with a fact of me that I didn't know existed. The tribal ways of the Gikuyu are here in detail-read, make yourself proud.
PS:I have my uncles supervintage copy and I am not selling it
Gikuyu 101.......2005-07-02
A good sample of a typical african traditional government. A historical account of the Agikuyu.
Amazing - Must Read For All Young Kikuyus.......2003-12-11
I got interested in learning more about my culture after listening to incredible stories from the past from a 70 year old Kikuyu woman. I bought the book and it was an intense understanding of my own culture. Its a great shame that not many young Kikuyus know as much about their own rich, beautiful culture. My son has to read it. I wish Kikuyus could recapture some of those traditions.
Dated, but invaluable.......2003-06-13
Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of independent Kenya, wrote this book as a graduate anthropology student in London. As a primary source, this book is invaluable. It gives detailed analysis of many aspects of pre-Mau Mau Gikuyu cultural ceremonies. However, as it is a product of the structuralist school of anthropology, many of its conclusions and findings are problematic, most notably in its opinion of culture as a fixed entity which determines human behavior. For students of colonial Africa, this piece will inevitably be of use. Personally, for a more nuanced view of colonial and post-colonial Kenya, I recommend the fiction of Ngugi wa Thiong'o, who tends to be more sympathetic to the lower ranks of Gikuyu societies, and who also happens to be one of the most important critics of Kenyatta's post-colonial politics. *Facing Mt. Kenya* is necessary, but at times, troublesome.
Reliable source of information on Kikuyu culture........1999-09-26
A most detailed and reliable account on Kikuyu heritage, customs and way of life.

Good understanding of pre-colonial East-African culture.......1999-08-19
A rare, well-researched anthropological view of the disappearing customs & culture of a modern Kenyan tribe. Good reading for anyone seeking to understand pre-colonial African culture. I found this to be a refreshing read of history through the eye of a people (rather than that of the conquering oppresors who could only see a 'Dark Continent'). I especially appreciated learning about the democratic models of leadership that existed long before the colonizers imposed their heirarchical structures that are one of the major causes of the leadership crisis that Africa faces today.
Proud.......1999-08-09
This book talks about the Gikuyu people. To enjoy the reading one must first have respect for cultures, and understand he is writing for his people.
I would not recommend this to anyone........1999-07-28

Book Description
The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Roman Herzog, and four internationally renowned scholars from different cultural backgrounds and academic disciplines argue about ways to prevent the scenario of a clash of civilizations from becoming reality. Recognizing that scenario as an intellectual projection with considerable influence on policy-makers across the world, they agree on the necessity to mobilize ideas of cooperation as countervailing forces against mindsets of conflict and violence; to respect the diversity of cultures, but avoid moral relativism; to recognize the danger of fundamentalist instrumentalization of religion for purposes of political power; to cope with economic and social disequilibria that may lead to eruptions of conflict and violence; and to focus on commonalities between cultures as a strategy of peace in a globalized world.
Customer Reviews:
Sage advice of a President a country can be proud of..........2005-03-15
The title of this book is quite forceful, the subtitle quite hopeful. Although the difficulties of implementing peace strategies for the 21st Century are far more evident today than when Herzog was President, the perspectives elaborated here are significant and necessary. Only through such thoughtful leadership and continuing dialogue is lasting world peace possible.

Book Description
David A. Hamburg--doctor, teacher, hostage negotiator, presidential advisor, and more--has seen a lot in his 77 years and has a message for the 21st century: An ounce of prevention is worth many pounds of cure when it comes to deadly international conflict. To explore how the model of preventive medicine may be practically applied to political violence, Hamburg created the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict. This book is the capstone of the Commission's extensive efforts and covers situations as widely ranging as World War II's Holocaust, terrorist attacks in the U. S., and the War in Iraq.
Customer Reviews:
Now more than ever we NEED this book!.......2003-03-13
Dr. Hamburg shows us the way to resolve conflicts and to prevent them. George Bush, Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice and Tony Blair need to read this book ASAP!!
We need this book NOW.......2002-12-27
...this book is needed now more than ever. Dr. Hamburg shows us how World War II could have been prevented, and how we can prevent future deadly conflicts from occurring. ...
The United Nations, Jimmy Carter, and CNN. ?????.......2002-10-08
Dr. Hamburg, during a TV interview on 10/8/02 thought a good place to begin changing the world on a path toward peace would be through -- The United Nations, Pres. Jimmy Carter & CNN cable news -- Here we go again. We'll just put all the intellectuals together, few of whom have earned dollars in the free competitive market, and have little working knowledge of how the human world functions outdoors of a classroom or library or gov. office, and we'll have them write a book on how to solve the worlds problems. They do this by thinking while their heads are way out of the classroom, and way up in the clouds. Turn everything over to the do nothing UN to get us into deaper trouble - to Jimmy Carter to, well-- - and to Jane Fonda's husband. I quit. P.S. I DO RATE THIS BOOK THREE STARS. I found I just had to pick my way carfully through it.
Give Peace a Chance!.......2002-07-26
This book could not be more timely or needed in the wake of September 11 and the war against terrorism. Dr. Hamburg, who headed the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflicts along with Cyrus Vance, has distilled the wisdom of many experts on preventing wars and conflicts into one volume, along with his own unique insights. The book, which comes with jacket blurbs from such luminaries as Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, Elie Wiesel, Sam Nunn and Warren Christopher, starts by laying out the events leading up to World War 2 and how that tragedy could have been prevented. Read this book to see how we can prevent World War 3 from happening!

Book Description
This book describes the world's most ancient homeland defense from the Vedic tradition of India (the source of Yoga). This secret knowledge of the Himalayas has been revived by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. This is not merely a theoretical approach. Numerous small-scale studies show these technologies of consciousness can provide a shield of protection against violence and terrorist acts.

Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Challenges.......2005-09-29
Finally someone with an alternative to WAR. In this book Modern Science meets Ancient Vedic Science producing a unique and powerful solution to current human challenges. Anyone who wants to be a part of the solution should read this book.
Is the World really ready for Peace?.......2005-08-02
This book to say the least is revolutionary! Anyone who feels the enormity of the situation we face in the world today with increased violence, slaughter on a scale never before witnessed of men, women, and children and the potential for nuclear holocaust, needs to read this book because the answer for real Peace is contained within it. The randomness of killing and destruction is addressed as to cause and cure, the cause malfunction of the human brain, the cure a technology that brings about coherence to brain functioning and thus creates functioning on the highest levels in human beings. How does this work and how far does it extend? It works on everything from our environment to the economics of living on this seemingly crowded and fragile planet. If you remember the TM technique from the 1970's, you will be amazed at the strides made by the TM movement since then, the ability to catapault the success of teaching individuals how to meditate and lower their stress level, to creating large groups of mediators performing such advanced techniques as "yogic flying" in order to lower the violent tendencies in society will positively stun you. When you read "Victory Before War," you will realize it can be done! World Peace is doable. Read it and see for yourself.
Awsome Explanation!.......2005-07-28
This book is a great Explanation to what Scientists call the "Maharishi Effect" and the practice of the peace creating Yagyas of Vedic Science. Victory Before War also has many explanations on the experiments conducted throughout the years on Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying, to verify the individual experiance during these activities. Great book for anybody interested in peace, and for those already oriented with the TM movement!

Book Description
Parliamentary obstruction, popularly known as the "filibuster," has been a defining feature of the U.S. Senate throughout its history. In this book, Gregory J. Wawro and Eric Schickler explain how the Senate managed to satisfy its lawmaking role during the nineteenth and early twentieth century, when it lacked seemingly essential formal rules for governing debate.
What prevented the Senate from self-destructing during this time? The authors argue that in a system where filibusters played out as wars of attrition, the threat of rule changes prevented the institution from devolving into parliamentary chaos. They show that institutional patterns of behavior induced by inherited rules did not render Senate rules immune from fundamental changes.
The authors' theoretical arguments are supported through a combination of extensive quantitative and case-study analysis, which spans a broad swath of history. They consider how changes in the larger institutional and political context--such as the expansion of the country and the move to direct election of senators--led to changes in the Senate regarding debate rules. They further investigate the impact these changes had on the functioning of the Senate. The book concludes with a discussion relating battles over obstruction in the Senate's past to recent conflicts over judicial nominations.

Book Description
The authors, all of whom are Ukrainian and Russian scientists involved with Chornobyl nuclear power plant since the April 1986 accident, present a comprehensive review of the accident. In addition, they present a risk assessment of the remains of the destroyed reactor and its surrounding shelter, Chornobyl radioactive waste storage and disposal sites, and environmental contamination in the region. The authors explore such questions as the risks posed by a collapse of the shelter, radionuclide migration from storage and disposal facilities in the exclusion zone, and transfer from soil to vegetation and its potential regional impact. The answers to these questions provide a scientific basis for the development of countermeasures against the Chornobyl accident in particular and the mitigation of environmental radioactive contamination in general. They also provide an important basis for understanding the human health and ecological risks posed by the accident.
