Book Description
By all appearances, Lizzie Simon was perfect. She had an Ivy League education, lots of friends, a loving family, and a dazzling career as a theater producer by the age of twenty-three. But that wasn't enough: Lizzie still felt alone in the world, and largely misunderstood. Having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as a teenager, she longed to meet others like herself; she wanted to hear the experiences of those who managed to move past their manic-depression and lead normal lives. So Lizzie hits the road, hoping to find "a herd of her own." Along the way she finds romance and madness, survivors and sufferers, and, somewhere between the lanes, herself. Part road trip, part love story, Detour is a fast-paced, enduring memoir that demystifies mental illness while it embraces the universally human struggle to become whole.

"A finely wrought memoir of mental health, Detour takes a genre explored by Susanna Kaysen and Kay Redfield Jamison and propels it in a revelatory and rebellious new direction. Detour is the extraordinary first book by Lizzie Simon, a twenty-three-year-old woman with bipolar disorder. We meet her as she is set to abandon her successful career as a theatrical producer in New York City, with plans to hit the road and find other bipolars like herself -- young, ambitious, opinionated, and truth-seeking. Her goal: to speak with them candidly without judgment, fear, or the slightest trace of anything clinical or jargon-laden. She wants their stories in their words. But after falling in love with her first interviewee, a troubled millionaire, the truth and the path become increasingly difficult to find. She indeed finds inspiring bipolars. Marissa, a twenty-something African-American adoptee; Jan, a popular rock 'n' roll radio deejay and mother of two; Matt, a quiet college student from the South. Each is resilient, wise, healthy, and hopeful. Yet each harbors stories of mania and depression that defy the limits of human experience and survival. But if she's achieving what she set out to do, then why does she feel more alien and alone than ever? Part road trip, part love story, part mystery, Simon has created a heartbreaking narrative of her cross-country quest. With brave humor, Simon writes guilelessly about herself, her past, and her search for ""a herd of her own."" She explores that shifting gray area where illness and identity intersect and blur, with the eye of an insider and the heart and soul of a survivor. Accessible and unique, Detour not only opens an intimate window on the day-to-day condition of living with a mood disorder, it also speaks to our universally human struggle to become whole."

Great Insight.......2007-09-27
I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the summer of 2007, at the age of 41 after being hospitalised. In the years prior, I struggled with depression, extreme emotional turmoil, and a precise feeling of not fitting in, of not feeling normal. After I was discharged from the hospital I sought out books that I knew to be out there regarding others and their experience with bipolar disorder to sort of get a handle on what I might be dealing up against. While Ms. Simon writes from the perspective of an intelligent, beautiful, talented young woman in the glow of her youth, I felt a resonance with her stories and encounters that make up "Detour". She visits with several other people she meets on a sort of mental health road trip and compares notes. Out of that came a dialog of the diffences, similarities, and ultimately the uniqueness of each person's bipolar disorder. If you or someone you love is struggling with an understanding of bipolar disorder, Lizzie Simon's book, "Detour: My Bipolar Road Trip in 4-D" is essential to fascilitating your awareness.
Praise for Lizzie Simon.......2007-09-26
In 'Detour' Lizzie Simon candidly shares details of her inner journey as she travels her personal bipolar road. Brave and honest, 'Detour' gives the reader a glimpse of the turmoil of mental illness and the relative calm of effective treatment.
Bipolar mom on finding you're heard.......2007-09-11
Once a successful young adult myself, I can appreciate the drive to depart one's family to find one's true herd and admire Simon's confidence and ability to take successful creative risks. Although Simon's cross-country travels interviewing successful young bipolar adults ultimately lead her to the conclusion that she has not "found her herd," it is no coincidence that Simon's work is testament to the fact that she does manage to find a strong voice for bipolar creativity and advocacy, "finding that she is heard" after all.
The turning point for Simon occurs when she becomes intimately acquainted with the most potentially destructive and violent aspects of the illness and chooses to distance herself from them, after which she learns how to retreat, relax, recuperate and forgive herself.
Simon's is a voice that does justice to the bipolar experience.
A MUST READ FOR ANY BIPOLAR SUFFERER.......2007-09-08
For me it was like looking into a mirror. Here was a person who suffered tragedies similar to my own for the same extended period. At age 58 my diagnosis came too late to save my legal career. Even so, the book provided assurance that the medications I was then taking weren't just a temporary fix. God bless Lizzie Simon for having the guts to open up about her disease. It is an added bonus to the reader that she does it so well. Her writing skills are up there with the best of them.

A book young people can relate to!.......2007-09-07
At age 18 I walked out of a hospital with the diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder. I searched for a book to relate to on this topic but found nothing. All the books I picked up were written by celebrities with markedly different lifestyles or were so academic they went over my head. Years later I found Detour! Reading Lizzie's story and the others she met on the way, was like breathing huge sigh of relief. Because of stigma not many people wave the bipolar flag and say "look at me I'm bipolar." I look at having bipolar as a gift of heightened senses, and Detour reinforced that belief and gave me pride in knowing others felt the same way. In addition Detour does not shy away from pointing out the extreme dangers that come from not addressing the seriousness of bipolar disorder. I would recommend Detour to anyone interested in mental illness as well as those interested in a story of inspiration!

Wow!.......2007-04-05
I admire the courage Lizzie Simon has to peel away- everything- and show us all the inside of her brain!
This is the memoir of her journey to find other young successful people like herself who suffer from bipolar disorder. She interviews seven different people who have similar stories to tell.
"Everybody has stories about being misdiagnosed, mistreated, misunderstood and disrespected by the medical community.
Everybody has spent long stretches of time as zombies waiting for medicine to work. Most of us have been good sports about humiliating side effects like weight gain, bed-wetting and drooling.
Everybody experienced a time when it didn't look as if they were gonna make it. Everybody did make it."
How brave of her to write this honest and eye opening memoir about the struggle and the stigma associated with mental illness.
I was so impressed by her ability to communicate the sadness but especially the mania. She was so unflinchingly direct with not one word of psychiatric jargon. This was a very real and often raw account of her cross-country adventure.
This was not a scientific study, this is the story of Lizzie's experience, it's a hopefully story. I feel the people she interviewed were very fortunate most of them had good parents who educated themselves and helped their children through their crisis.
Of course this could have been a very different story if Lizzie had chosen to write an objective scientific study about people suffering from bipolar disorder in America. I most likely wouldn't have read that book. I'm thankful she wrote this story, I found it very insightful.
A Deeper, Truer Look At Bipolarity (And A Young Woman's Life).......2006-08-02
I've re-read this book twice since discovering it. I continued to admire its emotional authenticity and intellectual clarity, which wind up allowing the reader to get beyond the wealth of misconceptions that surround bipolarity. This book goes way deeper and further than most personal-experience books on medical/emotional conditions.
Useful Addition to What is Already Out There.......2005-11-03
Detour provides another perspective for those who are bipolar or have a loved one who is bipolar. There are other books out there that cover the science and case studies of the disorder. This is a much more personal book. I certainly don't think it is the only book you should read on the subject. Beware that the focus is on the under 35, college educated, relatively recently diagnosed bipolar person. If you are that person you need to read this book. It is a very quick read and well worth the effort.
Detour.......2005-05-25
I thought that I would be able to relate to Simon's book as I have a few things in common with her. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at nineteen after experiencing a manic episode induced by antidepressants. I too have felt quite lonely at times; I've found myself wishing I had a friend who could relate to my experiences with bipolar disorder. I thought the book would be encouraging, and in a way it is. After reading it you remember that you aren't alone, that other teenagers and young adults have struggled with this disorder and they've survived.
I think that memoirs of this type can be misleading. I've read Jamison's book and Patty Duke's book to name a few and I have the same problem with these books as well. Anybody reading these books might think that the answer to bipolar disorder is simple enough, you need to take Lithium. Don't get me wrong, Lithium is an amazing medication; it brought me out of a manic high in about a week. And I took it for about two years and then it lost its effectiveness. Lithium can save lives but it isn't always the answer and it definitely isn't a perfect solution.
I finished the book feeling that medications are the answer to bipolar. But what about people like me who don't respond to Lithium or who can't tolerate the horrendous side-effects of the other mood stabilizers and antidepressants? There is no answer to this question in her book. And that's fine, I suppose, that isn't what she wanted her book to be about but she doesn't need to put down people who go the alternative route. In one section she is at a support group looking for "successful" bipolars and they are going around the circle describing their personal situations. Simon writes: "Next is this crackpot bipolar nutritionist lady who says that at the Parsons Institute they taught her how to change her diet and do eight million behavioral adjustments so she doesn't need so much medicine. She is fifty-nine, not young enough for my purposes." After I read that I wasn't at all convinced that it was the woman's age that deterred Simon from interviewing her but rather it was her "crackpot" nutrition.
In the same section she describes a woman whose son has bipolar schizoaffective disorder; the woman is there trying to gather information about treatment. Simons writes: "She has no clinical diagnosis herself, but I identify her immediately as a real nut.'. The woman says that her son gets put on all types of different medications and he isn't getting any better, he just sits in his room and does nothing. Simon doesn't verbalize her opinion in the group but thinks to herself: "Maybe he just hates you".
Simon seems quite conflicted. On the one hand she does a good job at expressing her disgust with the stigma surrounding bipolar disorder. On the other hand she is quick to use derogatory language. It's as if by using such language she is contributing to the very stigma that she is trying to fight. I found this particular aspect of the book unsettling.
Anyway, despite my criticisms of the book I would still recommend that you give it a try, it's interesting enough. But here's my warning: please don't feel bad if you find that you don't fit into Simon's definition of a "successful bipolar", she's a hard marker.
Not as good as the reviews say. . . . ........2004-09-12
I picked up this book about 1 1/2 years ago thinking that I'd find something that I could relate to, as I'm a 30 bipolar woman. Unfortunately, I could not relate to Lizzie Simon. She is elitist and she is very self-congratulatory. It is so embarrassing to read about her relationship with Nicholas, and somehow she thinks that she's the only one who could understand him. He can't understand himself!!! Needless to say, I don't understand what all the hype is when reading this book. I think there are plenty of people out there who have written excellent books on their struggles with mental illness (i.e Kay Redfield Jamison, William Styron). This book, though entertaining, is very base.

Book Description
In this unique eyewitness record, James Pettifer gives a startling and evocative portrayal of the terror and fear in Kosova under the Miloševic regime. As a writer for the London Times, he witnessed major events spanning from the emergence of the Kosova Liberation Army in May 1996 to the massive refugee movements of 1998 and 1999. He recorded the ground war between the KLA and the Serbs, the NATO bombing campaign, and subsequent liberation of Kosova. Pettifer offers new insight into hitherto undisclosed links between several European governments and the Miloševic regime.
Pettifer outlines the interplay between the reality on the ground and the perceptions promoted by the international media. He graphically describes the region’s bleakly harsh yet beautiful landscapes. Kosova Express evokes the nightmare of Miloševic’s police state and illustrates the complexities of the lives of foreign correspondents.

Book Description
From the Enron scandal to global warming, from the war on terrorism to the war on drugs, a growing number of people are unhappy with the status quo. Yet those genuinely interested in reading about the issues find that few contemporary theorists are seriously committed to accessible, clear writing. Furthermore, the mainstream media rarely represents social movements, and the theories associated with them, without distortion or bias.
Written in an engaging and accessible style, Ideas for Action gives activists the intellectual tools to turn discontent into a plan of action. Exploring a wide range of political traditions-including Marxism, anarchism, anti-imperialism, poststructualism, feminism, critical race theory, and environmentalism-Cynthia Kaufman acknowledges the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of political movements and the ideologies inspired by or -generated through them.Kaufman incorporates elements of her own activist experiences, and offers a coherent analysis without pretending to offer "the final word" on complex issues. Instead, she encourages inquiry and further investigation, offering readers the information to orient a critical understanding of the social world and a glimpse of the excitement and rewards of serious intellectual engagement with political ideas. Ideas for Action examines the work of diverse thinkers such as Adam Smith, Paulo Freire, Stuart Hall, and Ronald Takaki. Kaufman's insights break the chains of cynicism and lay a foundation for more effective organizing.
Cynthia Kaufman lives in Oakland, CA, where she has been involved in the tenant's rights movement. She has a doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and teaches Philosophy and Women's Studies at De Anza College in Cupertino.
Customer Reviews:
political ideas in practice.......2004-06-09
Cynthia Kaufman's IDEAS FOR ACTION is a sophisticated but highly readable analyis of key political issues and ideas. Drawing on a wide range of historical sources, Ms. Kaufman cuts through theoretical abstractions with intelligence and grace. Her real-life examples make complex issues concrete. Far more valuable than the superficial, ahistorical commentary of most television and print journalism, this book is a delight to read and an inspiration for social action.
What a book!.......2004-01-30
What a book! Ideas for Action is probably the best book I've read this decade; it's a precious instrument of serious activists. As an activist, I see myself as a practitioner more than an academian. And usually I find no time, no interest and no pleasure reading theoretical books. I usually find them to be too much at a distance from the real world, from reality. It's the famous between the position on a podium and the people down there in the room to whom one is giving a lecture; this book is not imposing that distance. This book is purposely written in solidarity for a better society. It is the work of an academian who also happens to be a practitioner. Ms. Kaufman released Ideas with the " . . . hopes that you will find some way to use it in your work. I wrote the book to help people new to radical politics to gain some orientations to radical thought and history, and to encourage a deepening to reflection on the part of experienced social justice activists." And let me tell you, her hopes are bearing fruit.
Sharp presentation of progressive politics and analysis.......2003-08-01
I definitely recommend Cynthia Kaufman's Ideas for Action : Relevant Theory for Radical Change.
I'd particularly recommend it to anyone interested in activism or progressive politics. The book is designed as a way for activists to get a grasp of a broad range of progressive topics quickly and coherently, and it's a clear description of globalization, capitalism, racism, sexism, Gramsci, activism. But in the process, she writing the clearest statement of left activists beliefs I've seen. More experienced activists and intellectuals are likely to get a nice "aha" moment as they recognize ideas they use, but hadn't related to each other, presented concisely and convincingly. She also does a great job of presenting the diversity of progressive positions and beliefs without partisanship that would prevent a reader from taking their own sides. Useful in a bunch of ways.

Each day at least 10,000 people worldwide die from disease-infected water. This is just one of the startling statistics contained in this collection of 13 essays, which address a wide variety of water-related issues, including global scarcity, pollution, privatization, poor distribution, and desalinization. In many parts of the world, useable fresh water (about 1% of the planet's total) is a resource more valuable than oil and even more essential to life. This book makes clear the sobering connection between inadequate clean water and poverty and the potential for increasing international conflicts (especially in parched places such as Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa), as well as some of the steps that might be taken to alleviate these problems: conservation, technological innovation, and effective cross-boundary water management. Its contributors--scientists, professors, journalists, and politicians--pile on one grim statistic after another, often repeating material from earlier chapters, which tends to dull what ultimately is a very compelling argument: that we use too much water, waste it foolishly, and degrade the environment by draining underground aquifers faster than they can be replenished.
By 2015, some 3 billion people will live in countries where fresh water is in short supply; by 2050, the number could be as high as 7 billion. Numbers this large are difficult to comprehend, which is why the most specific examples are the most horrifying. Consider the Taliban's unauthorized construction of a dam on the Helmand River in eastern Afghanistan in the 1990s and its effect on neighboring Iran, where a 4,000-square-kilometer lake has been sucked bone-dry. All fish have disappeared and so has the village that until recently depended on catching them. What remains is an exposed lakebed, rapidly being covered by dunes from frequent sandstorms. A modest example maybe, but a particularly haunting symbol for a growing global problem. --Keith Moerer
Book Description
In 2025, the United Nations expects more than half the world's population to lack sufficient water to cover basic needs. As demand continues to increase, this natural resource is used at a rate faster than it can be replenished. With less than one percent available for drinking, irrigation, and industrial use, the effects of water loss are global. This provocative book examines threats to the world's water: Asia's Aral Sea, once one of the largest inland bodies of water, is now a salty desert; 90 percent of California's wetlands have disappeared; the once-mighty Nile, Ganges, and Colorado Rivers barely reach the sea in dry seasons. And as the rate of climate change and airborne pollution quickens, the quantity and quality of available water is becoming more compromised. Conflicts over the ownership and use of that water compounds the manifold problems.
With a focus on prospects for the next 20 years, Whose Water Is It? puts a vivid and compelling face on this subject, from polar icefields facing threats from pollutants, to the water-starved regions of the Middle East, to the desert of the American Southwest. Its authors include world-renowned scientists, advocates, authors, and water managerspeople whose expertise and commitment to clean and sufficient water for the 21st century has translated into creative endeavors, scientific research, and action. Whose Water Is It? presents the most important issues facing the world's water supply today and provides suggestions for aiding its future.

A Problem Looming on the Horizon.......2006-02-12
After oil, then food, then water? The problems with distributing water are explored in an anthology fashion. This is an excellent book with surprising technical detail. Described herein is what will eventually lead to the downfall of the Chinese, the Indians, and yes, eventually the United States. Put simply: oil supplies fuel to run the pumps that withdraw water from unreplenished aquifers which supply the crops that feed an ever-growing population. Back in the early 70's I remember Playboy published a (Rand?) study showing what will happen when rising population meet limiting resources. This book would be a good follow-up to this study. I strongly recommend this book to everyone, especially, political leaders, business leaders, and others. This is a must read for everyone on the planet.

Book Description
"O Christ, whose voice the waters heard and hushed their raging at thy wordâ¦" -from "The Navy Hymn"
This second WWII novel from decorated veteran, Robert Vaughan, has the same appeal as Touch the Face of God-painstaking research of military strategy, geography, and equipment-and a new set of intriguing, realistic characters. Patrick and Diane's first meeting is anything but fanciful. In December 1941, Pat and his parents are returning from a holiday in Asia as conditions between Japan and the United States are deteriorating into certain conflict. Diane and her father, a missionary, are fleeing Japan at the heeding of their mission board. Providence has these young people on the same Pan Am Clipper that somehow manages to safely take off when the attacks on Wake Island and Pearl Harbor occur.
Flash forward. Both stationed in Pearl Harbor, Pat-now an officer on the USS ANGELFISH-and Diane-a translator for the Navy-rekindle their relationship and plan to marry. Unfortunate events, including the death of Diane's father and of Pat's ship steward, Choirboy, deepen their relationship, and the two are wed. But upon returning to his ship, Pat faces a crisis as a torpedo mis-launches, and he attempts to dislodge it alone. Sealed in the watertight room, Pat has an encounter with God-and with an old friend-that will save his life and the lives of countless others.

GREAT BOOK!!.......2007-08-27
This is an awesome book!well writen.I have read Robert Vaughns two other books TOUCH THE FACE OF GOD and HIS TRUTH IS MARCHING ON and they were just as good.He describes every thing so well.I definatley recomend this book!
Disappointing.......2005-07-16
The book is billed as a submarine story, but unfortunately, less than a third of the novel actually takes place onboard submarines. Instead, Vaughan tries to cover the entire war in less than three hundred pages, leaving a very thin read. The material that is present is subpar, the author describing three hours of depth charging in a single sentence. Read _Das Boot_ if you want a real submarine novel.
The Christian angle of the book is also unexpected and detracts greatly from the story. There is, literally, more material written about church and faith than there is about submarines. Several times there are acts of divine intervention that take away any notion of seriousness the book might have had.
If you want a religious fantasy set in the period 1941-1945, this might be the book for you. If you want a real war novel, stay away.
ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS WRITTEN.......2004-01-26
THE FIRST GOOD WAR STORY I READ WAS "TO HELL AND BACK". I was about 15 yrs. old and very impressed with Mr. Murphy. This book, "Whose Voice the Waters Heard", all though not the same type of war story never the less is very heart felt for those involved in one way or another. If you like some emotion in your reading then find a copy of "Whose Voice the Waters Heard". Do not start reading it until you have time to finish, before going to bed. You might not want to stop reading. You will definitely want more of his books. Normally I read only Westerns, and Mr. Vaughan has some very good ones out there.
AN OUTSTANDING INSPIRATIONAL STORY!!!!!!!!.......2003-07-14
WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD is a story of courage of the men who went in harm's way aboard submarines in WW2.
A story of the friendship between an American Diane Slayton and Miko Saito, the daughter of a Japanese officer and the fate that awaits their two fathers as the clouds of war grow ever thicker. The love that developopes between Diane and Patrick Hanifan as the clouds of war grow ever thicker. Most of all, WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD is an inspirational story that will touch the reader. For those with faith, make their faith stronger. For those who may have lost faith, WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD may hopefully help restore their faith. WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD is an OUTSTANDING & EXCELLENT book.
Jones, Wouk, Griffen, and now Vaughan.......2003-06-14
After I read his book, Touch The Face of God, I knew I would have to get Robert Vaughan's next WWII novel, WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD. I had my name in at the bookstore and when it came out, I got the first one. It was well worth the wait. With these two magnificent novels; WHOSE VOICE THE WATERS HEARD, and his earlier,Touch The Face of God, Vaughan has put himself in the same league with James Jones, Herman Wouk, and WEB Griffen. The characters are compelling; Patrick Hannifan who leaves a lucrative musical career to become a submariner, his fiancee, Diane Slayton, and Choirboy, a young black steward who proves his bravery in battle, and his humanity under stress. But one of the most fascinating characters is Commander Yutake Saito, a Japanese officer who gives the readers a unique look at the war from the Japanese perspective.
The only thing wrong with this book is that it did not debut on the best seller list. It is that good, believe me.

Powerful!.......1998-12-29
This is an amazingly stirring book for meditation or prayer, or simply to understand the reality of the 1980s in El Salvador. It captures the struggles of the Salvadoran people through the period of their civil war through their own stories.
