“I wanted to return to the place where I was born and see it with new eyes. I had no idea where my family was in Somalia. At first it seemed impossible—almost as impossible as a camel girl becoming a fashion model.” The sequel to Waris Dirie’s international best–seller
Desert Flower.

Enlightment.......2007-07-05
This book show me the incredible journey that Ms. Dirie went through. And no matter how she lived throughout her life she could not forget how she was raised. Great book
Another wonderful book by Waris Dirie.......2007-04-02
Waris Dirie is my favority author. I think she writes honestly about her life experiences and gives a different perspective than the average writer does. I would recommend everyone read this book.
Desert Dawn Review.......2005-08-12
This book was most useful to me by showing the life of a tribal family in Somalia from the viewpoint of someone who has experienced western life but is still sensative to the viewpoint of tribal nomadic life. It provides a really interesting insight rarely seen.
Untouchable.......2004-06-15
Once started to read I just couldn't stop. Just so amazing how Waris was caught between her home in somalia and New York. I support her courage
Too much content repeated from Desert Flower.......2004-05-09
Desert Flower was a fantastic book giving insight into a culture that blindly follows old fashioned and cruel rituals. Desert Dawn however repeats most of Desert Flower and just gives a bit of additional information about the further life of Waris. Sadly enough Waris has not learned much from her own mutilation, which she documents in circumcising her own son. Waris seems to forget that women play an important role in culture and rituals through upbringing and education of their own children. Circumcision and mutilation is not in nature's nor in any god's plan, otherwise they would have taken care about it.

Product Description
Description: Follow Brad and the Sandman on their magical journey to the Desert of Lop to learn the secrets of the desert that live in your heart. "When the Sandman comes to visit you tonight, you need to listen closely as you close your eyes and drift off to sleep. It is a tale of the magic that lives in the desert, of buried ancient treasures, vanishing wild camels, forgotten people and the courage of a small unlikely warrior destined to be their guardian. The new line of children's non violent toys and books produced by Wild Heart Ranch empowers children with cancer and brings awareness to the endangered wild Bactrian camel. The wild camels living in the far away Gobi Desert may offer a possible cure for illness based on preliminary research. The book teaches us that, “One small boy with cancer can change the world if you listen."
Customer Reviews:
(RAW Rating: 4.5) - A Brave Journey.......2006-07-26
What does a young boy with cancer have to do with camels in the Desert of Lop? Author Dawn Van Zant answers this question and many more in a story only she could tell. Bradford is a young boy who has spent a good portion of his life bravely fighting cancer. On one special night as he is laying in bed attempting to fall asleep, he feels a presence in the room. It turns out that the sandman, has been searching for thousands of years to find "the one," and it is Bradford. The Sandman takes Bradford on a journey through time and space that eventually leads them to the Gobi where he is greeted by wild camels who will guide him to the Desert of Lop. Along the way, Bradford learns about the camels, the land, and his illness while proving to himself that he too can be a brave hero. The book concludes with information about real life Wild Bactrian Camels and their status as a critically endangered species. The author also notes, how scientists are particularly interested in studying the animal's immune system, especially in light of all the species has overcome to survive over the years, and feel that it will lead to promising discoveries that could help with many human illnesses.
Once again Dawn Van Zant has written a book that clearly shows man's connection with nature. The way that she parallels Bradford's journey in the desert to his real-life battle with cancer, is heartfelt and inspiring. However, I think the book is better suited for children in the 9-12 age range rather than younger readers. BRADFORD AND THE JOURNEY TO THE DESERT OF LOP is a touching story that teaches lessons about courage and the importance of a positive attitude, while encouraging readers to learn more about nature.

It's a far scarier world in 2027. .......2006-01-27
The story takes place in the not too distant future. A time when technology is advanced, maybe too far advanced. The book shows what the reliance of technology can do to humanities existence. One person or the wrong persons having too much power and not putting into place any safeguards, etc...
The female lead character is strong, but not to the point of being another Wonder Woman. She is tough, yet the story shows her weaknesses.
You will find a lot of symbolism and irony throughout the book. The book reads fast, however, you will be thinking about it long after you've read the last page.
It's a mixture of MAD MAX and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK.......2005-10-23
This book is filled with action and danger and in the middle of Newark, New Jersey, the military attacks civilians in order to create a new world and the streets are a battlefield as the soldiers try to overpower the criminals of the state. But one soldier knows the truth behind the chaos. Now Corp.Skye must stop the President's evil deed, but at the same time, she can trust no one. But time is running out, as a highly powerful chemical bomb is about to be launch onto the un-expecting world.
An intense book if you like end of the world stories.

Book Description
Fifteen years ago, the residents of a small Arizona town just north of the Mexican border began to be affected by the criminal acts of a small band of survivalists, encamped approximately 50 miles south of town. Led by by a former U.S. Army officer, named Tom Roberts, dishonorably discharged, near the end of the Vietnam war, this band of survivalists, silently conducted criminal acts, such as drug running, extortion, and white slavery. Although, the local sheriff knows of their criminal acts, he never managed to gain the much needed evidence to convict Roberts and his band of survivalists. For years Roberts kept just ahead of the law in his dealings, until a beautiful district attorney by the name of Jennifer Danials manages to dig up the evidence that would finally put Roberts away. One week later, her dead body was discovered floating in a nearby river. Now, ten years later, the woman''s seventeen- year old daughter, Sheila, leads a very extraordinary life. Raised alone, by her wheelchair-bound older brother, Andrew, since she was just seven, she has excelled from a distraught young girl to a black-belt in the martial arts and an almost genius academically. Meanwhile, after fifteen years Tom Roberts has honed his skills in his shadowy acts of lawlessness. Although, the people of this town suspect him of deeds ranging in murder to abductions, his involvement in any such criminal activities are nearly impossible to prove. But even a crime boss has to retire eventually. Acting on a plan to steal twenty-five million dollars, Roberts pulls out all stops, in order to purchase a retirement refuge for himself and his survivalist companions in Mexico. Sheila Danials, her friends, and family know nothing of Roberts plans as they go about their everyday lives. But every day that brings Tom Roberts closer to his retirement...brings the Danials family closer to a showdown wi
Customer Reviews:
Filled with mystery, intrigue, and action!.......2005-10-16
Desert's Dawn is a novel that kept me in suspense until the end. Mr. Phillips did a great job in grabbing the reader from the very first page.
The well-written story takes place in a small Arizona town that has been plagued with lawless acts of a criminal named, Tom Roberts. For the past fifteen years, he has committed crimes in the region, but has managed to stay one step ahead of the authorities.
The saga begins ten years after the murder of Jennifer Danials, a district attorney from Flagstaff, AZ, who was kidnapped by Roberts. Her kidnapping occurred just as she was close to getting proof of his criminal activities.
Sheila Daniels, the seventeen-year old daughter of Jennifer, has been living for the last ten years in the care of her 44 year old half-brother Andrew. He is a wheelchair bound Army veteran, who was paralyzed for life during his brief duty in the U.S. invasion of Grenada.
When Sheila was first delivered by the police into Andrew's care, the young seven year old was very distraught. Her mother was her whole life. Now that her mother was gone, there was a great void in her life that needed to be filled.
Fortunately, through the love of friends and family, Sheila turned her life around. Now, ten years later, she has excelled from a distraught young girl, to a stable young woman. Sheila is intelligent, creative, independent, and highly skilled in the martial arts(which was a boon to her in several situations.)
Eventually, Sheila and the people of the small town clash with Roberts.
Secrets are revealed throughout the story. The reader will also enjoy the light-hearted humor and bravery. They will be shocked at the cruel acts of lawlessness by Roberts and his cohorts. The ending did surprise me. I think Mr. Phillips has written a thrilling, action packed mystery that will appeal to all who read Desert's Dawn.

Unbelievable, or Misunderstood?.......2003-11-16
Wow! What an incredible story Searchers tells. I wondered after reading it if it was Aliens that had abducted the Hesses or our own military doing desert warfare exercises in the Mojave. Could the "UFOs" be hover aircraft suited to travel above sand? The "red eyes" night vision goggles? And the "Aliens" soldiers in modern warfare, psy ops gas masks? Whatever it was that happened to Steve and Dawn Hess that night, it scared me for weeks.

IO.......2006-01-31
I had to get this book for a class, and it's a really interesting book. It highlights the many differences between international organizations and their various duties.
not for beginners.......2004-09-02
This book is a compilation of scholarly articles, grouped into seven sections, that cover theoretical and practical aspects of international organizations. The overall question these articles try to answer is whether IOs work or not, how well they work in different areas, and how well they have adjusted to changes in the international system since the end of the Cold War.
Although some of the articles are certainly interesting and well researched, I feel that overall they assume too much prior knowledge about international relations and even statistics to be of much use for either undergraduates or people who are not well-read in the field of political science. My students found the texts hard to understand and "much too dry". In addition, many of the articles are somewhat dated and a bit repetitive. In all fairness, I have to say that an audience of graduate students or scholars are much more likely to benefit from reading this volume.
On a positive note, the book addresses a wide range of issues, such as decision-making, peace and security, economics, social and humanitarian affairs. It also stands out because it addresses many practical concerns about IOs, in addition to theoretical approaches. In doing so, it covers a number of important IGOs and NGOs in great detail (e.g. UN, NATO, WTO, IMF, Amnesty International, etc.).
Overall, the book provides a fairly balanced view of the abilities of IOs today, although it does not provide an actual conclusion regarding the potential of IOs for global governance.

Book Description
Across the United States, diverse groups are turning away from confrontation and toward collaboration in an attempt to tackle some of our nation's most intractable environmental problems. Government agencies, community groups, businesses, and private individuals have begun working together to solve common problems, resolve conflicts, and develop forward-thinking strategies for moving in a more sustainable direction.
Making Collaboration Work examines those promising efforts. With a decade of research behind them, the authors offer an invaluable set of lessons on the role of collaboration in natural resource management and how to make it work. The book:
- explains why collaboration is an essential component of resource management
- describes barriers that must be understood and overcome
- presents eight themes that characterize successful efforts
- details the specific ways that groups can use those themes to achieve success
- provides advice on how to ensure accountability
Drawing on lessons from nearly two hundred cases from around the country, the authors describe the experience in practical terms and offer specific advice for agencies and individuals interested in pursuing a collaborative approach. The images of success offered can provide ideas to those mired in traditional management styles and empower those seeking new approaches. While many of the examples involve natural resource professionals, the lessons hold true in a variety of public policy settings including public health, social services, and environmental protection, among others.
Making Collaboration Work will be an invaluable source of ideas and inspiration for policy makers, managers and staff of government agencies and nongovernmental organizations, and community groups searching for more productive modes of interaction.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough but not persuasive.......2007-07-02
As the title suggests, this book examines success stories in the area of collaborative management of natural resources. The cases vary, but all involve a national forest because of the intellectual history of the two authors.
The book is constructed in outline form with chapters, sections, and subsections. Each subsection essentially consists of its own list of forms of collaboration. Around this outline the authors have built a sort of narrative, using pieces of cases as illustrations for each point in the outline. As a result, a particular issue - - such as collaboration to protect the Kirtland's warbler in the jack pine forests of the northern lower peninsula of Michigan - - may be spread among many different sections instead of being presented coherently in one place.
This structure has its advantages by pulling out analytical points, whereas presenting a bunch of cases would emphasize facts instead of concepts. Yet their stories are so short that the reader never feels that he is getting the full story. Including some fuller, in-depth cases would have helped.
A more important challenge is that looking only at successes is a strong selection bias even in large n or quantitative studies. It's possible that a collection of failures would exhibit the same collection of features that the success stories have. When looking only at successes in a collection of case studies, you don't really know what's driving the successes because you don't know how the successes differ from the failures. Perhaps each success reflects some unobserved luck and there are no lessons to be drawn from anything.
As this suggests, the book is not so useful for improving our understanding of collaborative problems - - the authors haven't systematized their knowledge or tried to explain the pattern of successes and failures. In other words, the book eschews theory.
However, the book would be most useful to people who are involved in practical problems, since you might be able to get some ideas from the successes of others. If that describes you, this book deserves four stars as a kind of checklist when considering community-based collaboration on environmental questions - - "Have we thought of doing X?" Most of the ideas in the book probably won't be relevant for solving your problem, but whatever ideas end up working will be worth the price of admission.
