Book Description
This is the first volume of 9 volumes that comprise the collected works of Swami Vivekananda. Much of the material was given as lectures during his visits to the West.
Customer Reviews:
Good Historical Value.......2007-05-06
Vivekananda was one of Ramakrishna's students. These books mostly depict the Swami's trips in behalf of Vedanta, in America and other countries. He writes beautifully and has simple, clear exposition. He does briefly describe the various types of Yoga. I did not find the books highly inspiring, and certainly not at the spiritual level of Autobiography of a Yogi.
excellent work.......2007-03-09
This is an excellent work of Swami. I cannot express it in my words how great the work is. I think, everyone in the world must own a copy of this book.
Life Changing.......2006-12-22
I first read about 3 volumes of this set when I was in HighSchool, and to say the least it has changed my life since. For many years I have turned to these pages for inspiration and solid reference on Hinduism.
One cannot help but wonder how inspiring it must have been to listen to those lectures from Swami Vivekananda himself!
A spiritual encyclopedia.......2006-10-28
This set comes in eight volumes (the latest volume, IX, is sold separately). The first volume itself blew my mind away. This volume shows the reader the intellectual greatness of the swami and his spiritual wisdom. The swami also explores in depth the hidden meaning of Hindu philosophy in the other volumes. If a non-Hindu were to read this spiritual encyclopedia, he/she would have a greater understanding of the real meaning of Hinduism. A must read for all souls seeking spiritual truth.
A wealth of wisdom.......2005-11-19
The first volume, alone, changed my outlook on life, religion, and spirituality. The volumes contain deep, practical wisdom on all aspects of life. The presentation of the material will appeal to westerners and easterners alike (and northerners and southerners :).

Book Description
Robert Scheinaâs latest book, drawn upon years of research, lecturing, and teaching in the field, is a groundbreaking and definitive study of Latin American military history. Despite the pivotal role of wars in U.S. history, few in the United States understand their effect elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere. This volume examines the various wars for independence in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Latin America and the areaâs conflicts with the United States. Scheina concludes with the beginnings of overt U.S. political intervention in the region. He focuses on operational history in the context of war as an instrument of politics and society, including insightful analyses of the military as an institution and its relations with civilian government. Latin America's Wars fills a void in the literature, broadens U.S. readersâ understanding of their neighbors, and serves as a launching point for new scholarship.

Latin America's Wars Volume I: The Age of the Caudillo, 1791-1899.......2007-08-17
This book allows you to understand the similarities and differences of the emerging latin americans countries. Many leaders (caudillos), few government ideals (liberal/federalist, royalist, etc.), lack of consensus, betrayals, etc. I have enjoyed every minute of reading, specially learning about their differences and how these citizens and soldiers forged themselves through war and evolved into nations. Many animosities still persist amongst citizens of neighboring nations. On these last Panamerican Games in July and August 2007, even though it is supposed to be a big sport celebration, these regional fervors could erupt in the arenas, events, and within the general public assisting to the Games.
This book is required reading for History and Military History buffs, it could also do wonders for people in the diplomatic services and business, because if you know the idiosincracy of the citizens of each of these nations and their feelings toward neighboring nations, you will be far ahead of the pack, without stumbling. I also bought Latin America's Wars Volume II.
Essentail book for Latin American military history.......2006-12-18
The idea of the Caudillo is interesting and has been uniquely Latin American. This book tries to look at how Caudillo's operated and the wars they started from the independence movement to the start of modernization. It includes Rosas in Argentina and his efforts to consolidate the country as well as the War of the Triple Alliance. The book is set up very well as a reference guide and I use it whenever I am about to talk about a war in Latin America. This is an essential addition to any Latin American history library.
The best basic reference work.......2006-05-24
Robert Scheina has written a much-needed reference work to provide the basics for the casual historian and a launching pad for serious students of Latin American military history. The layout of each chapter is logical and helpful -- setting out the causes of the various conflicts, describing the forces involved, describing the action and summarizing the results. The footnotes are a gold mine of references and, as a bonus, have some great thumbnail biorgraphies of most of the cast of characters.
As has been pointed out in other reviews, this is not a work for hard core battle junkies or wargamers. It is for those who are interested in a woefully underrepresented (in English) area both historically and geographically.
One minor quibble, however. The book could have benefited from better editing. Those pesky English homophones pop up with depressing regularity, causing such unfortunate situations as individuals seizing the "reigns" of power, when "reins" would be so much better. Also, there are too many exclamaion points. When the president of Peru dies leading a cavalry charge, I don't need an exclamation point to tell me it is important. A good editor could have prevented things like that from interrupting what is otherwise a cracking good read.
And yes, I am going to buy the second volume.
Fills in a great gap in history.......2004-04-21
This wonderful new publication tells the complete story of all of Latin America's Wars. The premise behind this work is simple, no volume exists that documents every conflict in Latin America. Although many books exist on the liberation struggle and a few books exist on the war of the pacific, no thorough scholararly account exists chronicling Latin Americas heretofore unnoticed violent history.
From the independence struggle to the early border wars and the breakup of the unified northern countries. Little, or perhaps simply inadequate, coverage is given to the Indian wars, but this is mostly due to the fact that most of the Indians issues had been resolved by the 1810s. The book covers every war from the Mexican American wars and interventions to the wars between Uruguay and Argentina and the war of the triple alliance which almost led to the extinction of Paraguay. A wonderful text that quickly navigates the struggles. This is not pure military history so although battles are covered this book does not lend itself to studying tactics and strategy, rather this book looks at the causes and affects and high points of the struggles. If you are looking for a blow by blow account of which regiment went where and who turned whose flank, this is not the book. But this is a thorough account and it documents even the smallest conflicts. A must read for anyone interested in Latin America, many people think Latin America has always been peaceful since independence but the truth is the opposite.

A Goldmine for Military History Buffs.......2003-07-26
This book covers the 19th century wars of Latin America at the campaign level--there are few if any combat experiences of the common soldier included. This is the kind of military history that I like, so it was fine with me. Within this parameter, each chapter gives a clear narrative overview of the war under discussion. The book gives the best short description (about 20 pages worth) of the Mexican-American War that I have ever come across. And I now have an understanding of the Paraguyan War and the War of the Pacific, wars that I had only seen outline accounts of before that were too brief to really get a sense of their flow. In this book there are enough maps and geographical descriptions to go along with the narrative that I got a feeling of almost "being there".
The author follows the same format for each chapter. He begins with a sentence or two on what sparked the war, followed by a paragraph or so on necessary background. Then follows the bulk of the chapter and heart of the book--the narrative description of the war. Each chapter concludes with a short section of the author's observations on what the war meant in a broader context.
Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in Latin America or warfare in general.

Book Description
Although the rational choice approach toward political behavior has been severely criticized, its adherents claim that competing models have failed to offer a more scientific model of political decisionmaking. This measured but provocative book offers precisely that: an alternative way of understanding political behavior based on cognitive research.
The authors draw on research in neuroscience, physiology, and experimental psychology to conceptualize habit and reason as two mental states that interact in a delicate, highly functional balance controlled by emotion. Applying this approach to more than fifteen years of election results, they shed light on a wide range of political behavior, including party identification, symbolic politics, and negative campaigning.
Remarkably accessible, Affective Intelligence and Political Judgment urges social scientists to move beyond the idealistic notion of the purely rational citizen to form a more complete, realistic model that includes the emotional side of human judgment.
Customer Reviews:
Building a case that political judgement is both emotive and rational........2007-03-07
This is an informative, thoughtful, academic presentation of a model of political judgement that may compete with the rational choice model that has dominated political science.
The authors present a model whereby two domains or process facilitate decision making, a rational deliberative domain and a threat surveilance domain. Politicians must appeal to both domains when conducting a campaign. In the area of the rational deliverative domain, the politician must build enthusiams for their leadership while reducing the enthusiams for the leadership of their opponent. At the same time, the threat surveilance domain must be activated, creating anxiety. Thus a successful campaign must ensure that anxiety about the candidate is kept at a minimum while raising anxiety about the other candidate. This model would explain why negative campaigns work and have become a standard operating procedure in political life.
The model also explains that whereas the deliberative logical rational aspect of measuring political opponents may be appropriate for a subset of our society, that other subsets in the society will not respond to political stimuli and information unless it is formulated in a way to raise anxiety.
This approach would indicate that we can not divorce emotion from reason and that successful political campaigns recognize this and develop a multiple strategy approach to influence the processes of voter enthusiasm or lack thereof or of anxiety or lack thereof.
Why Emotion Improves Political Participation........2006-06-08
For many generations, both academia in various disciplines and journalism in the news and editorial departments have widely adhered to the idea that the ideal citizen is detached, disinterested, and well-informed. This ideal has persisted despite the generally observable phenomenon that people who are detached or disinterested very frequently lack the motivation to become well-informed.
The authors of this book--two professors of political science and one professor of communications--seek to rehabilitate the reputation of those political actors who are motivated in significant part by an emotional commitment to one vision or another of significant societal improvement. They succeed admirably. No one who reads and studies this book will look at the politically passionate the same way again.
"So when do we think about politics?" the authors ask. "When our emotions tell us to," they answer. "We posit that individuals monitor political affairs by responding habitually, and for the most part unthinkingly, to familiar and expected political symbols, that is, by relying on past thought, calculation, and evaluation. But the central claim of our theory is that when citizens encounter a novel or threatening actor, event or issue on the political horizon, a process of fresh evaluation and political judgment is required."
The authors revise the traditional research paradigm. Political attentiveness, generally thought to be static in frequency, is seen as dynamic, along with affect, or feeling. Concepts of attitudes and party affiliation--traditionally thought of as having both thoughtful and habitual elements--are seen instead as being merely dominated by habitual behavior. Opposition between affect (feeling) and cognition is replaced by interaction between affect and cognition.
The "intrumental orientation to political behavior" is replaced by a "mix of thoughtless reliance on habit and explicit calculation of interest." The "idealized notion of citizenship" is replaced by "political ideals and institutions informed by realism about psychological dynamics."
Political issues, traditionally considered equivalent, are now considered a variable by issue type. Similarly, attentiveness and self-interest are no longer assumed to be considered contstansts but are considered variables.
"Our research leads us to conceptualize affect and reason as two complementary mental states in a delicate, interactive, and highly functional dynamic balance," the authors state. "We...argue that affective systems manage both our response to novelty and our reliance on established habits. More importantly, our work suggests that in addition to managing our emotional reactions to things that are novel, threatening, and familiar, affect also influences when and how we think about such things."
The authors invade the field of psychology and the neurosciences to present detailed findings. They discuss the brain's limbic region, which "governs behavior by monitoring primarily positive reinforcers and establishing dispositions."
These dispositions are "attached to previous experiences (which) governs people's behavioral repertoires....The disposition system relies on emotional assignment to control the execution of habits: we sustain those habits about which we feel enthusiastic and we abandon those that cause us despair."
The disposition system is contrasted with the surveillance system, "which acts to scan the environment for novelty and sudden intrusion of threat. It serves to warn us when we cannot rely on past learnings to handle what now confronts us and to warn us that some things and some people are powerful and dangerous. This system uses emotion to signal the consequences of its ongoing analyses. It generates moods of calmness, on the one hand, and anxiety, on the other...."
After a detailed foray into the neurosciences to document these conclusions, the authors return to more traditional political science, analyzing in depth the detailed survey data in the 1980-1996 American National Election Studies, which focus on the attitudes of the American people towards the various Presidential candidates during this time period.
They focus on the fluctuating levels of enthusiasm and anxiety towards various Presidential candidates, and find that as the level of anxiety towards a candidate that the voter would traditionally support on the basis of partisan affiliation rises, the voter searches the candidate's character and issue positions in far greater detail to see if the candidate is worthy of support. This provides a theoretical explanation for the power of negative campaigning, despite the fact that it is so very widely detested.
The affective intelligence theory is contrasted with the normal vote model and the rational choice model. Under the affective intelligence theory, the attentive voters are those who are either "habitually attentive" or those who are "anxious" about a candidate they would otherwise be inclined to support. "Those for whom new information generates anxiety" are "receptive to new information."
In short, the decision on who to vote for is based on "either reliance on habituated cues or reasoned considerations when unfamiliar or threatening situations preclude routine reliance on habit."
These conclusions are backed by statistical data from the ANES studies. Complacent voters place a 44% reliance on partisan cues, the find, while an anxious voter places only an 8% reliance on partisan cues. An anxious voter places almost twice as a great a share on reliance on candidate qualities than a complacent voter (35% to 19%), and almost twice as a great a share on policy preferences (57% to 35%).
After their research was completed, I believe President Clinton helped prove that this intense focus on candidate qualities and policy preferences can ultimately work to benefit a candidate who makes voters anxious: the Democrats broke a long historical pattern and scored net gains of Congressional seats in the aftermath of the Monica Lewinsky scandals.
This book is well worth reading and intensely studying by anyone who is active in political campaigns, by any journalist covering political campaigns, or by anyone studying political survey data. The authors seem to recognize the difficulties of penetrating the jargon they employ, and deal with the problem by frequent repetitions of the points they are making. A better written book would have been clearer and shorter. But the book is neither impenetrable or of excessive length, and the time it takes to master the points the authors are making is well worth the effort.
The authors deserve credit for their success in both conceptualization and research design. Integrating the neurosciences with political science and communications is a useful innovation. The combing and combining of twenty years of Presidential polling data is also a useful and rather rare accomplishment. It will be difficult to find a more substantive and profound book on the creation and monitoring of public opinion than this one.

Book Description
American environmental policy is not just a product of late twentieth-century concerns, says Richard Andrews in this important book. Instead, it is rooted in nearly four hundred years of government action to promote or control human uses of nature. This book tells that rich history, shows how it affects environmental issues today, and poses the central policy challenges for the future.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful, Informative and Approachable.......2004-11-30
First, I must confess that I'm an oceanographer, not a policy expert. So my review is from the point of view of an informed and interested reader, not an expert in the field of environmental management. I took an Envirnmental Management and Policy graduate class from Andrews, and notes for the book formed the basis of the class reading.
The point of view of the book, following from the historical context of European colonialization to the modern enforcement of laws based upon primarily English and Spanish precedents, allows for an in depth understanding of how and why environmental policies are debated and put into practice. Due to it's focus on historical precedence, the reader is lead to understand why and how policy decisions are made today.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is frustrated (either pro or con) by our current environmental policies. You will gain a wealth of insight into how and why environmental management polices are enacted. You may not like the current environmental policies, but this book will help you understand why our system works the ways it does.

offers perspective on US govt policies.......2006-10-24
Andrews offers a long look, across over a century of US government policies for the environment. Many links are made to other related topics in US history. From urban sanitation and public health to pollution control. He traces land policies all the way back to English colonial times, and the acts of entities like the Virginia Company and Hudson's Bay Company.
In the 20th century, the book describes the establishment and running of many national parks. As well as much rural development, epitomised by the TVA. We also see the rise of the BLM, and how it has to mediate between conflicting demands for rural land usage, from farmers to miners to tourists.
