It sounds like a legend out of medieval Tibet: the ascetic who leaves home to join the Buddhist order, then spends 12 years in a cave, 15 hours a day in a meditation box. This is no legend, but you could call Tenzin Palmo legendary in her single-minded pursuit of higher realizations. From the East End of London to halfway up the Himalayas, she is now back in society, attempting to pull medieval Tibetan Buddhism into the modern era--women's rights and all. As biographer Vickie Mackenzie says by way of background, a group of elite women practitioners called "Togdemnas" still existed just decades ago. Tenzin Palmo, having studied with her male counterparts, is now canvassing the planet, welcoming women into full participation in Tibetan Buddhism and building support for an academy of Togdemnas that she plans to establish in the Himalayas. Mackenzie helps raise awareness for women's roles in Tibetan Buddhism by going into some detail about obstacles still faced by women as well as heroines who have overcome those obstacles, such as Yeshe Tsogyel (Sky Dancer) and Machig Lapdron, a mother who started her own lineage. If Mackenzie has it her way, it won't be long before Tenzin Palmo joins that list of heroines. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

This is the incredible story of Tenzin Palmo, a remarkable woman who spent 12 years alone in a cave 13,000 feet up in the Himalayas.
At the age of 20, Diane Perry, looking to fill a void in her life, entered a monastery in India--the only woman amongst hundreds of monks---and began her battle against the prejudice that had excluded women from enlightenment for thousands of years.

Thirteen years later, Diane Perry a.k.a. Tenzin Palmo secluded herself in a remote cave 13,000 feet up in the Himalayas, where she stayed for twelve years. In her mountain retreat, she face unimaginable cold, wild animals, floods, snow and rockfalls, grew her own food and slept in a traditional wooden meditation box, three feet square. She never lay down.

Tenzin emerged from the cave with a determination to build a convent in northern India to revive the Togdenma lineage, a long-forgotten female spiritual elite. She has traveled around the world to find support for her cause, meeting with spiritual leaders from the Pope to Desmond Tutu. She agreed to tell her story only to Vicky Mackenzie and a portion of the royalties from this book will help towards the completion of her convent.

5 out of 5 stars True Tale of a Bodhisattva-to-Be.......2007-06-21

In 1961, a 21 year-old English girl named Diane Perry embarked on an extraordinary journey towards becoming only the second Western woman ever ordained as a Buddhist nun. Adopting the Tibetan name Tenzin Palmo, this young Cockney girl, daughter of a poor single mother working as a cleaning woman in south London, went on to transform herself into a cross-cultural spiritual pioneer, devoting her next 20 years to steeping herself in the rarefied higher teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, and bridging enormous barriers of culture and gender to pursue a deeply felt spiritual calling.

For most of the next two decades, Palmo lived among the exiled Tibetan monastic communities in India, at one point spending twelve years - yes, that's twelve years - in solitary retreat in a Himalayan cave. Since then, she has become a leading advocate for women in Buddhism, and a widely respected teacher leading Buddhist meditation retreats worldwide and working towards completing her convent for Tibetan nuns.

In the years since her long Himalayan solitude, Palmo has also taken a solemn vow - one that non-Buddhists may find outlandish, but that Palmo herself undoubtedly takes quite seriously - to dedicate her current and future lifetimes (as Tibetan Buddhists believe) towards attaining enlightenment in the female form, transforming herself into a full-fledged female bodhisattva.

Mackenzie, a former Times of London journalist, has written a captivating account of this remarkable womanýs life, including fascinating vignettes about her early encounters with Tibetan luminaries such as the great meditation master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a young Dalai Lama, and her lifelong teacher and guru Kamtrul Rinpoche, who recognized her immediately upon their first meeting as a reincarnated Tibetan lama in the Kargyu tradition.

A reluctant biography subject (agreeing to the project only after much heartfelt persuading by Mackenzie, an unabashed admirer), Palmo comes across as a deeply humble, holy figure, possessed of a profound inner wisdom and much practical sense.

This book is that rare find of a biography, in which we meet a remarkable but hitherto uncelebrated figure, whose life story provides an object lesson in moral virtue and grace.

I would recommend this book to men, women, Buddhists, non-Buddhists, and others.

1 out of 5 stars how to destroy a good story.......2007-05-21

This is the story of an extraordinary woman who strives for enlightenment, and in her quest she trundles off to live in a cave for years. Quite amazing.
Unfortunately, despite the fact that the story is fascinating, this book is so staggeringly badly written that every page made me wince and in the end I gave up and haven't finished it. Despite the authors fairly prolific output in matters of buddhism/spirituality I found the content bland, trite, rambling and uninspiring.
I am not normally so critical of a book, and this is my first review, but this book incensed me because it completely mangled a fantastic story.
It's only worth reading if you are particularly interested in Tenzin Palmo, I would never bother reading it for anything other than gleaning the facts.

5 out of 5 stars Alone on a Mountaintop.......2006-06-12

Cave in the Snow is an Intelligent and Insightful book. Tenzin Palmo helps us to Realize that we as Humans are open to unimaginable Possibilities. Her Journey is one of Integrity and Truthfulness. She battles the Elements , a male dominated Faith and her own upbringing in an attempt to find True Enlightenment. Her Cultivation of Higher Values and Moral Essence are a Testament to the Strength and Courage of not only herself but of all Women. I was Deeply moved by the Wisdom and Accomplishment of Tenzin Palmo.

Vicki Mackenzie - the author of this incredible book - should be applauded for presenting such a Fascinating and Balanced book. Tenzin Palmo takes us along a Path of Spiritual Transformation. She is truly in Union with the True Self. I am a Better person for having read this book.

Cave in the snow is a Faciltator of Awareness. We as readers are are Inspred by Tenzin Palmos Knowledge and Confidence. She proves that Divinity is your Birthright. Enhance your Experience of today by reading the Tapestry of the Soul which is Cave in the Snow.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman Apart.......2006-03-19

This book exceeded my high expectations.

First off it is a well told life story of a western woman drawn to Buddhism. That spiritual attraction is not so unusual, but her subseqent move to India, and the related discomforts she overcame long before starting her years of seclusion were truly inspiring.

Then came the chapters on her actual life in her cave. Since "the cave" is in the title of the book one reads with great anticipation until that part of her life begins. And the author does not shortchange you. You get detail and wholeness. Your curiosities are satisfied and you get a feeling for the spiritual evolution she was achieving herself.

The latter chapters of the book were an added bonus. You gain a rich feeling for Tenzin Palmo's inner peace and stand in awe as she travels the globe fulfilling her goal of starting a Buddhist monastery for women.

Let me leave you with a quote of Palmo's that I found very satisfying: '...taking time to be still and think is often a better investment for future productivity than cramming every waking moment with feverish activity."

All in all a book of growth, wisdom, adventure and a bonus of personal reflection.

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2005-11-01

Am I the only person who found this book to be shallow? I actually couldn't finish it! I got about halfway through and got tremendously irritated with two things: the first one is the author's focus on apparently gossipy details - like Tenzin Palmo's early love conquests. It seemed an awful lot like the undertone was "Look at this woman! She became a nun, and it's not because she was socially shunned by men!" This introduced a note of melodrama that really doesn't suit the subject matter.

Now, the second part that really bothered me: The title of the book is "Cave in the Snow" not "Small cottage in the mountains". I had to put the book down when I read the sentence about the DOUBLE GLAZED WINDOWS that were installed in her "cave" COME ON! It is amazing what she did, living in the himilayas on her own (except for those annual shipments of goods to last her the year). I would have been interested to read about that. But the author had to create melodrama and insinuate that Tenzin Palmo lived in a cave - the cave was bricked in, repaved, installed with a window with DOUBLE GLAZING, there was a patio out front, and a terraced garden.
I'm not saying that Tenzin Palmo doesn't deserve all the credit that she has received - she has truly blazed a trail for all women in buddhism, however the author's attempts to create interest border on melodrama and significant inaccuracy.

    Book Description

When is the use of military force by a nation morally justified? How can the tendency toward unrestrained warfare between parties with major cultural differences be controlled? In this timely book, James Turner Johnson refocuses the moral analysis of war on the real problems of contemporary armed conflicts and analyzes the specific problems posed by warfare today.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting perspective on a relevant subject........2003-07-30

To some, the title of this book - Morality and Contemporary Warfare - may seem as much an oxymoron as its subject matter - just war theory. Well, James T. Johnson is out to convince you that your wrong. Somewhere exactly in between hard-line interventionism and soft-line pacifism lies the cool, tempered and thoughtful (if still imperfect) moral approach of just war theory.

According to just war theory, there are seven moral imperatives to be cognizant of before any war can be justified: a just cause, appropriate intent, response is proportioned to the stimulus, their must exist a reasonable hope for success, peace must be the end goal, only those authorized to declare war do, every other option has been exhausted or is infeasible. Similarly, if a nation or alliance decides to go to war, there are two rules, according to just war theory, for combat: first, one must do as little damage to noncombatants as possible, and second, the use of force has to be no greater than is necessary.

Using these guidelines, Johnson takes just war theory (a concet that's been in discussion since Grotius) and applies it to contemporary (1997) situations. He reviews how international law has adopted the just war theory and how the church has embraced it (even as they embraced pacifism, they used its principles as a fall-back plan).

The advantage of a book like this is that a.) Johnson is comprehensive in his theoretical discussions and links them to concrete events (Somalia, Iraqi guif war, American civil war). The second advantage is that as it was written in '97, the book is calmer in tone than those written post-Sept. 11th, particularly in his informative and clear-headed discussion of the differences (but not incommensurability) between Western and Islamic culture.

The disadvantages are two: First, Johnson tends to wander into lengthy digressions in his chapters, so much so that occasionally, I found myself wondering if he'd come back to his original argument. He always did but it left me wondering without the digressions, if the book would've been 140 instead of 227 pages. Second, Johnson is not a good writer. His dull prose meant combined with unpredicted digressions left me wandering my mind a bit, so that I would end up reading the same page three times, each time noticing another better way to work the thought he expressed.

All in all, it is a good book that brings up to date a theory of just wars that was last seriously broached by Micheal Walzer in 1977 (in a classic called "Just and Unjust Wars". The dryness and unpredictability of the text, though, keep this from a four or five star ranking.

4 out of 5 stars Solid book, but too reliant.......2000-07-27

Johnson does an excellent book introducing the reader to the development of just war theory. His arguments are clear, well structured, and logical. I highly recommend this book for theorists and policymakers (especially) as a strong introduction into the field of just war thinking and all of its real-world incarnations (e.g., humanitarian intervention, civil wars, international humanitarian law, and peace-building/enforcing).

The only criticism I have is that it is too reliant on only a few sources. Johnson builds almost all of his arguments around Michael Waltzer's "Just and Unjust Wars" and Chirstian thought. If we are to come to a global political consensus on the laws of war, including what a "crime against humanity" is, we need to come to a moral consensus. That moral consensus, as Johnson does admit, will only come through a further understanding of non-Christian thought on the subject.

All in all, it's a strong book and definitely worth reading.

    5 out of 5 stars Gaining perspective.......2000-05-18

Johnson does an outsatnding job in looking at the developement of Just War Theory. Particularly helpful is his noting the recent development of the pacifist presumption which is new developement in modern academic thought. The book goes a long way in bringing the Just War Theory out of its current misuse by both the pacifists and national leaders. I highly recommend this book.

Needed some guides for promotion preparation. This is one of several that I purchased, and I think all helped a little in different areas.

If you have a lot of time to prepare and study (and you always should be preparing for promotion in ANY job) then get as many books & guides as you can. They will help you do better now, and get recognized now. When promotion time comes - you will be ready!

1 out of 5 stars BORING AND UNORGANIZED.......2003-12-23

This book is one of several required reading for the Stanard police supervisor promotion exam. If Stanard is using this to make up their test, it is little wonder people are rising to a level of their own incompetence. This book is boring, poorly organized, and generally full of complicated sentences that even a PHd would have trouble understanding. Although some ideas are good, the book does not flow well and therefore many concepts are lost in this wordy mess. Wake up Stanard, Municiple League, and administrators! A good supervisor should never be picked based on her/his ability to digest this type of ridiculous thrown together nonsense.

IT BRINGS POLICING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY WITH EMPOWERMENT OF SUBORDINATES, EVALUATIONS OF SUPERVISORS BY SUBORDINATES, REALCOMMUNITY POLICING AND AN END TO AUTHORITARIAN LEADERSHIP. A MUST READ FOR ANY POLICE OFFICER LOOKING TO BE A SUPERVISOR OR MANAGER. I PREDICT IT WILL BE THE BIBLE OF POLICE SUPERVISION FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. GOODBY NATHAN IANNONE.

3 out of 5 stars Defective Police Supervision.......1999-12-07

This book is crammed full of good and useful ideas ranging from basic motivational psychology to the latest trend in "Community Policing". Some of the chapters really hit home and spell out clearly the problems and potential solutions facing modern police departments. However, a lot of the material is buried and hard to piece together due to poor wording and chaotic organization of the topics. This is especially annoying since the book is a common source text for many police promotional exams. As a supervisory reference, the book has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, due to the rambling paragraph structure the book falls woefully short as a source text and will leave the reader scratching his head in confusion as he struggles to draw out specific terms, definitions and outlines. Another setback is that the book is almost identical to the earlier 2nd edition. This hardly makes it a worthy purchase unless, like myself, you have to have it for a promotional test. Unless it is required reading, I suggest getting the 2nd edition at a used book store and saving some money. If this is a required test source at your department, consider finding the accompanying study guide to decipher the key concepts.

This book is required reading for my department to take the Sgt's exam. If you have any problems going to sleep, read this and in 10 minutes you'll be out. There are a lot of good theories in this book, if you have any prior military service, you would have seen a lot of this before. It gives you a new insight on management, not leadership.

2 out of 5 stars Little redeeming value.......2005-07-23

The author of the review "Bad" could not have been more on-target. (And now I will proceed to be similarly lambasted by those of you who deem my articulate review "unhelpful" simply because I don't agree with you that this book will solve all of the world's problems. Thus, since I write negative reviews AS WELL AS positive ones, I will certainly never challenge anyone's "Top 100 reviewer" status.... but that's another story; I digress...)

This book is a jumbled cacophony of lists, adages, and "how-to" advice; all with no inherent interconnection, and limited usefulness in practical terms. I, like other reviewers, was only reading it as it was required reading for an online law enforcement course I was taking (I am a cop). Therefore I felt the need to warn those of you who are actually contemplating the voluntary reading of this book for purposes of enhancing your career.

I notice of course the flowery praise from other reviewers. This is somewhat unexplainable to me. All I can think of is that we as a people (admirably) are more likely to comment on something we feel positive about, than the opposite. And don't get me wrong, if this book helps you in some way, or you feel it has effective information to suit your needs, then by all means, I am not knocking your experience. Certainly there is SOME amount of helpful info to be gleaned here (thus the 2 stars instead of one!). It just seemed like overall, you are just being given an "information dump", with little coherence or style to speak of.

Additionally, many of the concepts and actual phrases are taken DIRECTLY from US military doctrine, as well as the actual leadership publications. At times this is appropriately noted and referenced, but other times it is not. (I spent 9 years in the Army, and some of the terms and phrases the author uses are VERY familiar, believe me!)

The real-world examples and anecdotes are few, and lackluster, and the author is quick to jump back into his ingrained style of dumping on you more maxims and formulas (some of these are so clicheed as to be almost PAINFUL to read, especially if you have read a few self-development books in the past). In the end one is left with the impression, "I could have written this book!"

Also the review would not be complete without noting the gratuitous and sometimes ghastly grammatical errors. They are all there folks: misspellings, syntax errors, usage issues, incomplete sentences, the works. I am not an English major, but come on, isn't someone supposed to review this stuff before publication? If you have read a few books in your life (not saying you need to be Einstein) you will surely find all the grammatical flaws distracting- and, admittedly, a bit disheartening from a man trying to "teach" me something.

Like I said, if you get something out of this book, my hat's off to you. Personally I found it dry, formulaic, and almost completely UN-helpful. There HAS to be better books on leadership out there! Wait... I'll recommend one right of the bat: try to get your hands on Army Field Manual 22-100, "Military Leadership". You'll find great historical examples, practical applications (to the military, though, not police work), and you may be surprised to find some of the same information as in Baker's book! (Minus all the grammatical errors though).

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Police Managers.......2004-03-04

I was a little hesitant in purchasing this book since it was written by a military leader who likely operated in an environment where authoritarian leadership is the norm. My concern was unfounded. It is written for police leaders and in language that is easily understood. The author has some great insight into what it takes to be an effective leader. More importantly though, he gives some concrete examples and ideas on how to act as a leader. The case histories are based in hard reality with examples most police officers will be able to relate to. I really can't say enough good things about this book. It should be required reading for all police brass.

5 out of 5 stars The best study guide for police leadership!!!!.......2003-09-27

This book is such a great leadership review!
Anyone who reads this book should get a better understanding of how to become a great leader. The text is clear and to the point. After reading Baker's leadership book there is NO excuse for poor performance. It was nice to read a book that had all the information on this topic and was actually easy to comprehend.
If you don't get the principles of leadership after reading this book, you never will. I recommend it to my friends as the best study guide out there.
Grab a copy and see for yourself.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-09-26

I give this police leadership book a 5-star rating. All the fundamentals are there in an easy-to-read format. This book makes a contribution to the field of law enforcement and I am glad that I had the opportunity to read it. The book encourages ethical police leadership and a sense of duty and honor.

This should be a college book to teach non real word Police Supervison. The supplement should be the book. Simple and to the point

5 out of 5 stars Seven essays by experienced professionals concerning practical approaches to re-integrating former prisoners into society.......2005-08-14

What Works and Why: Effective Approaches to Reentry is an anthology of seven essays by experienced professionals concerning practical approaches to re-integrating former prisoners into society. The essays are "Social Learning, Social Capital, and Correctional Theories"; "Models of Supervision Relevant to the Delivery of Effective Correctional Service"; "Evidence-Based Programming Today"; "Using an Integrated Model to Implement Evidence-based Practices in Corrections"; "Public Safety and the Search for a Strategic Converter"; "Meeting the Challenges of Prisoner Reentry"; and "Revisiting Responsibility". Published jointly by the American Correctional Association and the International Community Corrections Association, What Works and Why dismisses extended philosophical concerns for a focus on common problems that need immediate solutions. Written in plain terms, the essays highlight what is most needed for the sake of benefiting society as surely as the former prison inmates. Strongly recommended for anyone working in corrections, criminal law, associated politics, and potentially of use to even former prisoners themselves.
