Book Description
A former welfare father from the ghetto of Detroit, Michael Eric Dyson is today a critic, scholar, and ordained Baptist minister who has forged a unique role: he is a compelling spokesman for the concerns of the black community, and also a leader who has a genuine rapport with that community, particularly with urban youth. In his essays, lectures, sermons, and books, he has emerged as one of the leading African-American voices of our day. Dyson's passion for contemporary black culture informs Between God and Gangsta' Rap, his latest foray into the ongoing debate about African-American identity which embraces the hopes of the church and the cool reality of hip-hop. Bringing together writings on music, religion, politics, and identity, and offering a multi-faceted view of black life, the book charts the progress of Dyson's own soul, from his roots in the Detroit ghetto, to his current status as a Baptist minister, professor, cultural critic, husband, and father. Dyson opens with a letter to his brother, who is serving life in prison on a murder charge. This painful piece reveals a violence in the author's own family that sets the tone for themes that will emerge throughout these writings: violence on the black body and soul; the redemptive power of hope through school, church, and family; sexuality as a source of anguish and of joy; and the struggle with entrenched white racism. There is a section of wonderful profiles Dyson calls "Testimonials"--studies of black men, from O.J. Simpson to Marion Barry, and from Baptist preacher Gardner Taylor to Michael Jordan and Sam Cooke. In "Obsessed with O.J.," Dyson offers an extremely personal and insightful series of reflections on the case. In "Lessons," Dyson takes up the subjects of politics and racial identity. Newt Gingrich and moral panic, Quabiliah Shabazz, Carol Moseley Braun, the NAACP, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X all figure in these insightful and accessible pieces. And "Songs of Celebration" draws from Dyson's writings for the popular press such as Rolling Stone and Vibe, and explores the joys and pitfalls of black expression, from the black vernacular bible to gospel music, R and B, and hip-hop. Dyson concludes with an essay framed as a letter to his wife, which offers a positive counterbalance to the opening address to his brother. The letter serves as a tribute to the redemptive powers of love, the black family, spirit, and change. Arguing that the richness of black culture today can be found in the interstices--between god and gangsta' rap--Dyson charts the progress and pain of African Americans over the past decade, showing that brilliance and beauty, pain and drudgery are components of this changing culture. As a compendium of his thinking about contemporary culture Between God and Gangsta' Rap will find a wide audience among black and white readers.

MICHAEL ERIC DYSON: BETWEEN GOD AND MISOGYNIST CRAP.......2006-02-11
To say that preacher, professor, and hip-hop prophet Michael Eric Dyson is a brilliant scholar and prolific writer is to not only make a gross underassessment of his intellectual acumen, but also belies his impact on the transliterative interpretation of Black, urban vernacular and culture into academic fare. Dyson stands poised to ascend to the position of 21st century nouveau Negro Literati-he's an academician and theologian extraordinaire with his finger acutely on the pulse of the ghetto fabulous, and the not so fabulous. His attempt to bridge the gap between the pulpit and the projects, between the hallowed halls of scholastic academy and the temporal alleyways of municipal despair, is to not only be commended, but also to be acknowledged as groundbreaking scholarship. Dyson has created in himself a new paradigm, the rapping apostle who champions the words of the socially oppressed, economically poor, and melanin-rich youth across Amerikkka.
While I stand in agreement with a great number of Dyson's arguments and commentaries on Black culture, and I respect and revere his ability to render unbiased and unpopular examinations of historical African American icons, I find him dangerously lacking in his self-proclaimed position of feminist. I cannot in good consciousness harshly critique Professor Dyson's intent when it comes to addressing the issue of gender in the African American community but I most assuredly take issue with his content.
The esteemed professor identifies himself as a benevolent champion to the "fairer" sex while hiding behind a thinly-veiled patriarchal and misogynistic mask. Whatever his public beliefs on misogyny might be, Dr. Dyson clearly isn't averse to the excessive adulation of its most gross perpetrators-nowhere less so than in his iconic homage to gangsta rapper Ice Cube in his book entitled Between God and Gangsta Rap. To read this unblemished critique, one would think that Cube is the ghetto version of Paul Robeson; brilliant, multi-talented, prolific renaissance man driven to rap about blunts and "bitches" due to extenuating circumstances that propel him to compromise his craft with the profane. Dyson states, "Even when Ice Cube misses the mark, the furious intelligence and rhetorical skill of his gangstafronationalist aesthetic manages to provoke and inspire." Literary brilliance aside, inspire whom and to what end is the question. Nowhere within his tribute to Cube does he state that the rapper goes too far or that he is pathological and diseased in his perception and portrayal of Black women in his music. Dr. Dyson mentions that the artist might have some animus towards women but conveniently forgets to include any lyrics that highlight the rapper's sentiments. Took her to the Comfort Inn/Tucked her in/Pulled out the third leg and pumped it in/She said will you call me/Yeah I'll call you a bitch and a hoe after I ball ya. The term "furious intelligence" as used to describe Ice Cube keeps ringing in my ears as I reread those lyrics and wonder how rhyming the word "Inn" with "in" and "in" is either furious or intelligent.
Dyson's continuous failure to criticize Black male rappers is disturbing. It is as if he is giving them carte blanche to degrade Black woman in any vile and disgusting way imaginable and placing his stamp of approval on it to the academic community. Dyson attributes the demise of the political and revolutionary group Public Enemy to their defiant stance against the status quo, yet he failed to mention Flavor Flav's criminal, wife-beating, drug-related activities as contributory in any way. His failure to acknowledge and reprimand rappers smacks of disrespect to the women they vilify and also to the marginalized youth who create this loathsome (c)rap. It says to them that they don't have to have any responsibility for what they say because they are only reflecting their environment. It holds them to no higher standard than their putrid and venomous attacks on women. I do not blame the victims of oppression for their outward manifestations of lyrical enmity, but I also do not condone such behavior either. My one consolation in all of this is that most of the rappers who so egregiously violate the sensibilities of women will never pick up one of Dyson's books to read and comprehend its distortions.
It seems that membership into some sort of secret sect of testosterone prohibits in depth analysis of the pathos of Black men by The Reverend Michael Dyson. In his benedictory tribute to his third wife, Dyson says, ". . .for the most part black men have been unwilling to confront inequities between ourselves and the women in our lives, inequities that we deeply invest in and justify by all sorts of philosophical and rhetorical gyrations." That, in essence, should have been the launching pad for the discussion about the disparity in agendas between Black male/female relationships. Instead, he doesn't even attempt to address what sort of inequities he perceives and gives no attention whatsoever to the topic. He would much rather wax piously about how faultless he was in his failed marriages and how he was justified in his adultery. "The women with whom I was unfaithful were no doubt greatly dissatisfied by my dismal performance," he laments, "and I was profoundly ashamed." I suppose that one is to assume that if he had performed better, and his companions had further enjoyed themselves, that his shame would somehow have been less profound. The entire anecdote seems crafted to assure the reader full comprehension of the fact that he's got skillz in bed, no matter what a few random women might be able to say about him. His declaration of his sexual prowess mirrors the exact same behavior of rappers talking about how much pipe they can lay and how many women they can turn out, he simply didn't have a beat behind his proclamation.
Perhaps he simply forgot to address the issue of Black men choosing to date white women in outrageous numbers, or the propensity for them to revere European standards of beauty in women of color. While he made sure that the reader knew that he was a diligent and loving father, missing was the discussion of single mothers in the African American community and the Black man's role in raising and taking responsibility for their children. Mike Dyson chooses to use his full name publicly, quite possibly to distinguish himself from the convicted rapist/boxer whose name differs by only a single letter, but the discussion of the psychological ramifications of sexual assault in the Black community went unmentioned in his work. The professor states that it is painful for Black women, many of whom have fought valiantly for Black pride, to hear the dissonant chord of disdain carried in the angry epithet "bitch." The true feminist might suggest that it is even more tragic for the generation of young women who have grown up with such vile references daily entertaining them and to not find it offensive at all. As alarming and as disgusting as it may seem, Dyson can be quoted as saying, " Some sisters, ladies, and women might, ironically prefer the rancid, ridiculous, but honest cant of Snoop's undifferentiated demonology: one man's bitch is another man's bitch." Well perhaps the professor wouldn't mind if I called him a dick-sucking, jocking, wanna-be rapper, swinging on the nuts of the fly and the dapper. Hey, put a beat to that and I think I have a platinum selling record there.
I don't know..........2005-02-12
This book is filled with Dr. Dyson tackling many subjects, including the O.J Simpson trial, Michael Jordan, Mariah Carey and the issues surrounding her identity in the eyes of the viewing public (black and white), and others as well. It's not necessarily a tough read; the title of the book is simply misleading. While I read it, I could see the link he attempts to make with his audience while he discusses various subjects, but it is pretty difficult to follow. It's "Between God and Gangsta Rap", but it takes a long time to bridge the links together, and that is what frustrated me. I didn't need certain issues in the book to understand others, but it may take that for other people who read it. The one piece I did enjoy was one about a pastor who is revered in the African-American community, Gardner "Wash" Taylor. Besides that, the book didn't do too much for me, and that is unfortunate, because I am a huge Michael Eric Dyson fan. It will really just depend on what type of reader you are as to whether you like or dislike the book, or whether you finish or don't finish it.
not a book, but a "publishing event".......2000-06-15
Dyson has very little to say here, and some of what he says is almost embarrassing. The rationale for this book is not at all clear, beyond the royalties. The whole thing is very poorly edited, and Dyson's writing sputters--a brilliant one-liner followed by a pointless anecdote which the reader can see coming a mile away. This is all style and no substance, and the style is nothing to write home about, either. I get the sense that this book was the brainchild of some literary agent or publishing house--the author just doesn't have anything much to say, and doesn't say it very well. Dyson has gifts, but seems to pour them out without much care. I have read all of his books, and this is the worst one. The consistent and avoidable flaws in Dyson's work is lack of research, reliance on rhetoric, and failure to polish the writing. This one appears to have been written in the airport lounge on the way to his next speaking gig.
Between God and Gangsta Rap: Too much room to cover.......1998-03-18
Dyson has set a big task for this little book. He has staked out alot of ground to cover and that's where this book falls short. Maybe three of the essays are worth pursuing, in particular the piece on African American preaching and some of the personal reflections, especially the story about his brother and family, but other pieces, sound more like snipets that appeared in Vibe and seem better suited to liner notes. And please, no more OJ stuff, this man has become a cultural hang nail - enough already!
Book Description
Panzergrenadier Division "Grossdeutschland" was one of Germany's most celebrated military formations of the Second World War. Formed in 1942 by the expansion of Infantry Regiment (motorized) "Grossdeutschland," the new division quickly earned its reputation on the Eastern Front of being the elite of the German Army. Twice the size of most other divisions, it was an immensely powerful and hard-hitting mechanized formation that cut a large swath through the Red Army, whether in the attack or on the defense. Its carefully selected officer and non-commissioned officer corps ensured that no matter what the odds, the division would always give a good account of itself in battle and would possess an esprit de corps enjoyed by few other comparable divisions, including those of the Waffen-SS.
The thousands of volunteers from every land and province in Germany who fought and died while serving in the ranks of Panzergrenadier Division "Grossdeutschland" represented a cross-section of German society, a radical departure from the manner in which most German divisions of the era were created. Now for the first time, the faces of these men, at rest and in battle, can be seen through the images gleaned from hundreds of photographs taken by the division's war correspondents or Kriegsberichter.
This outstanding selection of photographs, which until recently remained unseen for decades in a European archive, have been recovered and painstakingly researched by authors Remy Spezzano and Thomas McGuirl. Together with the assistance of the division's Veterans' association, they identified hundreds of men, living and dead, as well as dozens of combat vehicles, items of equipment, and specific engagements the division took part in from April 1942 to September 1944. Accompanied by a detailed narrative that ties each of the photos within the context of the war on the Eastern Front, "God, Honor, Fatherland" represents a milestone in the study of the war in the East and shows the face of the German soldier as he has never been shown before.

The Best of the GD Picture Histories.......2006-08-07
Having purchased many Grossdeutschland photo histories over the years, I was pleasantly surprised to find this outstanding RZM product at a used bookstore. Yep...that doesn't happen every day. Naturally I snapped this gem up and am still amazed at the quality of pictures and narrative.
This volume follows the GD from 1942-1944, which are the years focused on the Soviet front. The pictures cover all aspects of the division from the maintenance and logistics elements to the Infantry, Panzer, and Reconnaissance units. As earlier reviews indicated, the captions are very well done and specific attention is paid to naming the individuals pictured. Another great plus is the large format size of many pictures. For modellers these are a window into details often missed in smaller format photos.
So if you already think you already have enough volumes of GD related history...think again. This volume is one that you don't want to be without.
Another first rate job by RZM.
Unbelievably good captions.......2002-02-15
Not just another mundane collection of photos, this book is perhaps one of the best volumes in English regarding German soldiers, and especially the GD Division. The captions cast light on many arcance areas of study - uniforms, organization, history, tactics - and all the details are consistently correct and well researched. The only minor nit I was able to find is the mis-captioning of an NCO equivalent beamten as a "Hauptmann" - (p. 114)
Overall, a thoroughly excellent photographic record, with emphasis on naming photo subjects (a very nice touch). Of course, as with any collection of WW II photos, most of the pictures in this book are obviously posed, and there is nothing in the way of "real action" shots. This is not a drawback, and few "real action" shots were taken during the war by any of the combatants.
There are also some excellent biographical sketches of Knight' Cross winners and unit commanders.
Well done picture history of an elite German division........1999-09-08
God, Honor, Fatherland is an excellent pictoral study of one of the Whermacht's truly elite divisions. The author covers "GD" from 1942 to 1944. Although I have a fairly extensive collection of books covering the German Army on the Eastern front, most photos in this book were new to me. The author made contact with numerous "GD" veterans and got many previously unpublished photos, many of which the people in them are listed by name and sub-unit. The author also gives 1 to 2 page narratives of the various major battles GD participated in during this time frame. As well as descriptions of the various sub-units that made up GD, including rarely covered support/maitenance units.
My favorite part of the book were the biographical sketches of various GD personalities. These include not only senior and company grade officers, but several NCO's as well. I recomend this book to anyone interested in German units or the Eastern front of WW2, particularly armor buffs and modelers.

a picture is worth a thousand words.......2002-03-19
This is a great compilation of photos from the German-Soviet front. It shows the tremendous heroism and sacrifice of Soviet people in bringing hitlerite Germany to its knees. Probably no other nation would have enough will and courage to stop the biggest terrorists of our times.
Definetly a waste of money and shelf space.......2001-09-20
Sadly I got myself talked into buying this book from a WWII forum and I did so without the benefit of shifting through its pages.
One must end up thinking that a campaing as massive as the eastern front would show more fotographic evidence from the russian side than the so often seen images of the eastern front aficionado. I thought that by now more photos would emerge but nothing alike.
Believe me, if you have three decent books about the eastern front you aren't missing much here. Maybe a 10% of rare non-common photos. Because folks, this book is about photos and nothing more. Captions are miserable and openly wage if not straightforward missused to the author's storyline. Photos you have seen with other captions in other books, also clear inventions easily uncovered by the readed and well informed peruser. Photos clearly of 43-45 with 41 captions, mismatched geographic areas...
I don't want even begin with the clear agenda of this author. It barely deviates from Ehrenburg's propaganda diatrabes of the 40's. Overly inflated German casuality figures that seem Saddam Husseins claims of western losses during the Gulf war.
It was a waste of money and those "dead" photos everybody talks about that made this book so "interesting" you have already seen, believe me.
Disturbing yet factual look at the horrors of Eastern Front.......2001-06-14
Many people still don't realize the brutality of the Eastern Front, for them this book is the reminder of the sacrifice of the Soviet people to defeat the hated Germans who invaded their country. Definitely not for the squeamish.
Difficult images from a troubled past.......2001-06-09
If you're reading this, you probably know who professor John Erickson is, and what "Eastern Front" does mean. But let's suppose you've just stumbled here, and you're wondering what it's all about. Well: you can buy "The Eastern Front In Photographs" for two reasons. The first is to have a quick overview of what happened in those fateful 4 years of war between the German surprise assault on Russia (operation "Barbarossa", 22nd June 1941) and the fall of Berlin in May 1945: the so called Russian (or Eastern) Front of WWII, also known - in the former Soviet Union - as the Great Patriotic War. Or you could be interested in the pictures themselves. In both cases, "The Eastern Front In Photographs" is something you should buy.
Professor John Erickson (here helped by his wife Lubjica) is the world most renowned expert on the Russian Front. His two-volume history on the war ("The Road To Stalingrad" and "The Road To Berlin") are nothing short of a true (and voluminous!) bible on the argument. When I say "voluminous", I don't exaggerate - a complete cover-to-cover reading of these books takes an inordinate amount of time and some serious commitment. The beginner or causal reader could be frightened away by the table of contents alone. So, in the recent years, Prof. Erickson has devoted himself to digest a bit his own phenomenal knowledge of the subject, first appearing in the great "The Russian Front" documentary - available both on video and DVD - and then with this well edited collection of images, the majority of which never previously published.
A word of caution is here necessary - most of the pics collected in this book aren't "nice", at least, not in the current meaning of the words. Not only not titillating exploitative in the modern sense (the kind of flashy images of wartime horrors and wartime action we've been used to) but the majority doesn't deal even with any action at all. And this tells much about the honesty of Prof. Erickson's approach - because, even more than a war fought, the Eastern Front (that, it's now sensible to remind, it was the 80% of the entire WWII in Europe) was a war endured, by civilian and combatant alike. And no one endured it more than the Russian people: the overwhelming majority of the pictures are images of suffering, physical and psychological. Some - as those related to the horrors of anti-partisan warfare - are truly appalling, but awfully true nevertheless. If you still see war simply as a sequence of military operations, exciting heroics and unrelenting action, this book is a bitter cure.
There's, however, the other side of the coin: the propaganda (still propaganda but less blatantly "false" as one could imagine, thanks to the proverbial Russian understatement), the daily life, the countless pictures of children, the occasional humorous bits (like the sunbathing couples among Sevastopol ruins), and, of course, the military machine in action. And although the majority of pictures are Russian, the German side gets some kind of exposure, albeit limited. As I mentioned before, "The Eastern Front In Photographs" work well to as an introductory text. And it's here, of course, that professor Erickson skill does really shine. Skilfully ordered by chapters echoing the structure of the two "Roads", the text gives a comprehensive chronicle of what happened, when it happened, and why it did happen that way. Recently discovered or still sensitive topics (as the origins of the conflict, Operation Mars or the Warsaw Revolt) are given an authoritative treatment accordingly to the most recent findings. Conversely, you'll not find the same gross exaggerations and distortions still so habitual in this kind of literature. If you're new to the subject, is should probably look no further.
To sum it up: not a breakthrough but a great visual and textual account by a leading authority on a murderous conflict, one of the most important event in recent history, still neglected in the West ten years after the end of the Cold War.

Book Description
With a postscript describing SEAL efforts in Afghanistan, The Warrior Elite takes you into the toughest, longest, and most relentless military
training in the world.
What does it take to become a Navy SEAL? What makes talented, intelligent young men volunteer for physical punishment, cold water, and days without sleep? In The Warrior Elite, former Navy SEAL Dick Couch documents the process that transforms young men into warriors. SEAL training is the distillation of the human spirit, a tradition-bound ordeal that seeks to find men with character, courage, and the burning desire to win at all costs, men who would rather die than quit.
Customer Reviews:
Seal Mom.......2007-10-09
Wow! I can not imagine how these young men go though this. They are truly inspiring. Couch's detailed descriptions allow you join these warriors in the making on their journey that forges our elite warriors; the navy seals.
I had no idea........2007-09-26
What does it take to be one of the few? A true Warrior in the skeptical face of a modern world and a people who often find the idea more fantasy or idealistic than reality.
Take a cultural, personal and life-changing journey with Seal Class 228 as they go through the long process of becoming Navy Seals. What do they have to do, why these men, what is the cost, what are these men willing to do to receive the coveted title of Navy Seal?
Dick Couch, a former Seal himself, gives an intimate look at what these men must go through: from physical training, the most difficult in the world, to more advanced techniques such as combat and sharp-shooting skills. By telling the stories of these men, from the students to the teachers, Couch gives us a unique perspective of Seal ideals that began decades ago, based on the honor, blood and sweat, dedication and bravery of Navy frogmen before them and tenants that remain true to this day.
I had no previous knowledge or understanding of the Navy or the military in general, so I was initially worried about jargon and how in-depth the history would be. As it turns out, while Couch does give a brief outline of how the Seals were created and the divisions of the teams and history of the training, it is not so overdone in technical descriptions but enough for the general reader to get a grasp of the organization of such a force. It is not a historical description of the Navy or of Navy Seals, but the human element of a special forces team. The wonderful element is the personalization of the men that Couch is allowed to interview and interact with. Real men, real stories, nothing but.
It's obvious that Couch is very proud of the trade and of the men who have the strength and mental determination to bear through the physical pain. His enthusiasm, detailed, well-written and subjective perspective is why I enjoyed this book so much. Some parts drag on but it's well worth the read, a book that everyone should read...
I Love This Book.......2007-05-18
I think one of Dick Couch's great strengths as an author is his ability to put us in there and help us get to know the people in his pages. Warrior Elite was exceptional for that reason. I have a huge amount of respect for SOF and seeing what these guys go through to be selected and prepared for their work only deepens that respect. Couch's style is not overly "military." The book is easy to read and truly enjoyable. You don't have to have a lot of knowledge going into it, but people who really know their stuff will appreciate the attention to detail shown by the author.
Awesome, couldn't put it down........2007-01-30
This book is a very interesting description of the beginning of some of the best warriors in the world. The heart and dedication of the young men who put themselves through BUD/s training is unbelievable. Dick Couch captures the essence of the training better than any other book I have read on the Navy SEALs. Highly recommended.
Awesome book. Reality check for SEAL wannabees.......2007-01-07
This book is no joke. A SEAL wannabee myself, I found myself questioning whether I had the pure guts it takes to finish this thing. If you haven't fallen flat on your face from exhaustion and your not dead, then you haven't given it your all. That's the most important point I took away from this book. I would suggest the follow up book to this one, "The finishing school". It's about the SQT following BUD/s. It's dry if your not interested in becoming a SEAL, but informative if you are.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing else compares..........2000-08-31
I used both editions of Laws's book, Aquatic Pollution, throughout my Master's studies as an introductory text to environmental problems of the hydrosphere. I have found no other book to be equally informative. I recommend it to my undergrad class as a primary reference. The material covered is also suitable for beginning MS students, and the conceptual approach used is quite effective especially for those with no technical science exposure. Easy reading to be supplemented as needed with the more technical books like Stumm and Morgan's Aquatic Chemistry. Very adequate for introductory courses. I'm glad that the 3rd edition is due soon.
a must-own.......1998-11-07
I used this book for a college course and not only found it easy to read and understand, but also enjoyable. The author's style of writing is unmatched among science textbook writers. The book covers an overview of all relevent issues in aquatic pollution for both marine and freshwater environments. Each topic is covered with enough detail and background information to provide a clear understanding of the problems within the field of aquatic pollution.
