Book Description

When naturalist Heinrich sets out for a year in the wilds of Maine accompanied only by his pet raven, Jack, readers everywhere will want to tag along. Looking for the answers to life's questions in the richness of one small place, he settles into a rustic log cabin. There is research to be done - on songbirds, insects, and mosses; but there is also life to be lived - chopping wood, carrying water, and planting a garden. By melding his own life with the life of the Maine wilderness, Heinrich finds meaning within this complex fabric far beyond our ordinary perceptions. Throughout this year where "the subtle matters and the spectacular distracts," he brings us back to the drama in small things, when life is lived consciously.

"Quirky, unassuming, humorous, enlightening, and just a little bizarre." (Washington Post Book World)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A quiet, enjoyable book about living with nature.......2007-01-09

I really enjoyed this book -- it is a quiet, at times poetic, reflection on how one man lived within his environment for four distinct seasons. Heinrich reminds us of how richly varied and fascinating our world is and how much we miss every moment that we are too distracted to really see, smell, hear, and touch the natural world. The book inspired me to try to slow down a bit and take a closer look at the plants, animals, birds, and insects in my own back yard.

4 out of 5 stars A delightful book........2004-09-14

Bernd Heinrich a Zoology Professor at the University of Vermont has written many books on natural history or what is now called nature writing. This is the first I've read and have enjoyed it immensely. His style is a mixture of deep zoological knowledge of the animals and plants of the Maine woods and the pure love of being a human being who can appreciate and really live the surrounding natural world. This is what is needed by all people if they want to appreciate their world. Its a delightful book but does not possess the intensity of Jack Turner's "Abstract Wild" or Doug Peacock's Grisly writing. But it doesn't really need it, it is just a man living in the woods for a year through the beautiful summer pestered by black flies and the stunning autumn into a cold winter and the new life of spring. The book is also full of very well drawn animals and plants. The story starts with him driving to his cabin with his pet raven Jack who, being a raven, is independent minded and eventually leaves. Its too bad Jack was truly fascinating. There is much to do including the chopping of wood for the winter, taking care of his apple trees, raven watching to do. Its amazing how beautiful nature is when someone is watching with all his heart and mind. A delightful book.

4 out of 5 stars Back to Nature.......2004-08-02

Heinrich writes about his observations of Maine's animals and plants from winter silences to spring's new growth. It ranges from lyrical descriptions of wild flowers to more than you want to know about decaying carcasses attracting carrion eaters.
I enjoyed reading it while parked in an RV in a Maine campground. My little window on the woods was so limited, making me appreciate his insights and trained eye. Sometimes he is philosophical, and at other times mundane (justifying why he doesn't wash his dishes more often).

5 out of 5 stars A raven review..........2004-03-07

Not planning to review this book, I changed my mind after perusing the reviews for "A Year in the Maine Woods." Most of them are by people who miss the point of his book (and, dare I say, life) entirely.

Yes, Bernd is foremost a Zoologist, and so does get a bit technical at times, but his over-whelming love of nature--and the sense that he's just a good guy doing what many of us are afraid to do (i.e. kick in our TeeVees and "get back to nature")--is enough for my vote.

In addition to the natural science found in these pages, I very much enjoyed his mundane, day-to-day observations (every time he made coffee or drank a beer, I inwardly smiled). He mixes his love for the woods with a few 21st-century earthly pleasures, as well he should. Of course he's no Thoreau, and I don't think he is in anyway trying to be. Still, he's a damn-sight closer to Nature and the ideas and mind of H.D.T than most.

Truly a pleasurable read. Thanks, Bernd.

4 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected...But Still Okay.......2003-01-31

This is the second book by Heinrich that I have read. The first, Ravens in Winter, I found very enjoyable. (see review)

Based on the title and a review written on the book's back cover, I expected the book to be about Heinrich's year alone, except for his pet raven, Jack. With this in mind I thought we'd learn about his discoveries in nature and also his understanding into his own thoughts as he pondered life in seclusion.

This was not a book about living in the wild woods of Maine in seclusion. Heinrich often went into town and ate, met with neighbors, had family visit, and at one point he had a number of students over for a couple of weeks. Was this bad...no, but not what I expected based on the review on his book's back cover.

Heinrich has a gift in sharing information about nature. His curiosity and excitement for the natural world is contagious. In this respect I wasn't let down. He did go on quite a bit about the various things he noticed, sometimes sharing too much information, but I would just skip the paragraph and move on.

I think what appeals to me most are the times he is in seclusion and reflects on nature and his own life. He endures an amazing amount of cold...below zero, doesn't have running water, and the inside temperature in his cabin dips down below freezing on several occasions. I would enjoy many of the aspects of living in the location he speaks of but I would do it with a few extras...insulation in the walls, and electricity are two that come to mind!

Overall I did enjoy the book and I hope you do too!

5 out of 5 stars Nine Miles Bridge : Three Years in the Maine Woods.......2005-09-18

Helen Hamlin's shared experiences in the Maine woods brought me back to my childhood. I spent most of my youth in and around the Allagash and St. John Rivers and many summers in the Chamberlin waters; Churchill, Eagle Lake, etc.
Helen's writing is authentic, amusing, and filled with typical Maine philosphy. Loved it!!

I almost hate to share one of the best kept secrets regarding a piece of heaven here on Earth, that being the North Maine Woods. Luckily I have found this place! Many of my friends know that I have enjoyed this amazing spot so for Christmas this past year I received a first edition copy of Nine Mile Bridge. In it, Helen Hamlim writes such a wonderful narrative of her three years living in these woods.

As a reader it was so good to be able to visualize what she wrote about as I have experienced, albeit in a VERY small way, some of it too. Her writing is folksy, campy, but most importantly genuine. What a gutsy woman she must have been!

I know that my next trip into the "woods" will be even more profound having read this novel.

READ IT TOO-- and don't be afraid to visit the "woods". I know you'll feel the same way I do about them-- a piece of heaven here on Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Very Important Book for my own history..........2003-03-03

This is a time capsule of life in the Northern Maine woods through the 1920's-30's and into the early 1940's. My grandparents (briefly mentioned in the book) were French Canadian lumber workers who lived and worked the woods in the operations based around Jackman, Maine. (The Jeans and the Veillieuxs, respectively, my grandfather and grandmothers family).

A great read for people curious about the lives of those who worked in the lumber camps of Northern Maine in the early 20th Century. I've heard countless stories my late grandmother told of those days, and this book adds immensely to that rich experience.

This is a part of American History that will never occur again, the way of life in such remote locations, the teamwork, effort and work ethic and fun ethic of these folks was astounding. A true Gem worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling story of life in the wilderness by new authorl.......1997-10-11

Living in the 'wilderness' early in this century was a daily adventure. Much different from 'backpacking' as we know it. Folks like Helen Hamlin set up camp and lived and worked miles from any sizable town, with only a small number of neighbors, if any. Life was difficult and hard, but never dangerous, if you prepared properly. Ms. Hamlin is a first time author and, as such, is not to be compared with modern, well practiced authors of our time. Still, her story is fascinating reading of a life and times that is part of the wonderful fabric of our country. Highly recommended for those with a bent for real-life perspectives of a different America.

Incredible book . The story of 1,262 men who served in the Civil War. Complete roster, including home towns. This is most of all a personal book, the lives of over 1,000 men who almost all came from Northern Indiana, about Peru through South Bend. If you are in Indiana, you can visualize the towns they were from, many whom exist today. You'll see the units all recruited from the same town, dozens or even close to a hundred all from the same area. You can imgine when one third never came home and sometimes a whole town's men disappeared. A vicious war, fought by men of honor and belief on both sides.

The historical roots of contemporary America's foreign policy, by today's leading scholars.

"The vast ambition of the geostrategic rulers around George Bush the Younger to achieve global domination . . . is already running afoul of its own systemic preconditions. —Anders Stephanson in The New American Empire

In in The New American Empire, leading authorities on U.S. foreign policy examine the historical underpinnings of the new American unilateralism. Offering an accessible, critical overview of U.S. policy in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, they assess both the distinct continuities between past and present U.S. policy, as well as what makes the current administration's policies dramatically different. The essays also reveal how those policies serve the ends of favored groups for whom imperialism pays both ideologically and materially.

Both an essential historical primer on America's new imperial role and a thorough dissection of the Bush administration's foreign policy objectives, in The New American Empire is sure to become a touchstone for understanding America's role in the twenty-first-century world.

In his chapter Thomas McCormick notes during the Cold War, Europe subordinated itself to American political and military leadership against anti-capitalist currents. America got rid of nuisances for Europe in the form of Saddam's threat to the ME oil supply on which Europe is so dependent and in the form of Milosevic. They subordinated themselves to Clinton's leadership in advancing corporate globaliztion. However the ever increasing American military activity in the ME since the late Clinton years and the blatantly imperialist NSS of the Bush Republicans has many European elites vocally criticizing the U.S. The U.S., has tried to use the periphery of the EU (Italy and Spain) and the weak pliable govts of East Europe against its critics in the rich EU Franco-German core. However, the population in the former two sets of countries tended to be against the Iraq war and favor orientation towards the EU and not the U.S. so their govts. couldn't give much practical help to the Americans.

The U.S. killed hundreds of thousands of Filipinos at the turn of the 20th century, Prof. Young notes in Ch.2, with such a mentality as evinced by the old Indian butcher General Jakob Smith, who ordered his boys to kill everyone they saw over the age of ten and to make Samar province a "howling wilderness." Michael Adas in Chapter Seven gives an instructive overview of the American occupation of the Philippines. American officials praised themselves to the skies for their pure humanitarian motives towards the Filipinos. They introduced agricultural programs creating hybrid seeds, new fertilizers, etc. The vast majority of the people were oppressed tenant farmers, wage slaves on sugar plantations, etc, who had no use for such expensive innovations, while the landlord minority reaped the overwhelming profit from increases in productivity, improved ports and transportation facilities.

Prof. Young in Chapter 2 quotes Colonel Nathan Sassaman as saying "With a heavy dose of fear and violence, and a lot of money for projects," the Iraqis can be convinced that the Americans are out for their best interest. U.S. soldiers do things like shoot at Iraqis who when meeting U.S. troops cannot understand their English commands and arrest family members as hostages against suspected insurgents and blow up the houses of such suspects. Whole towns and villages are surrounded by miles long barbed wire fences.. Young quotes the mayor of pro-American Husayba as saying as saying the nature of the occupation was making the townspeople anti-U.S. . Lt. Col. John Nagl explained that brutal American counterinsurgency methods in civilian areas would continue and that they would worry about cultivating pro-Americanism in Iraq later. The Arab mind only understands force, one officer explained. Meanwhile, as Prof. McCormick notes, Proconsul Bremer imposed a radical program of neoliberal "shock therapy" that will perhaps wreck more destruction on Iraq than it has on the rest of the third world.

In Central America, the U.S. has always blocked attempts to decrease the exploitation of the poor, after WWII the pretext often being fighting commies.. In 1968, Greg Grandin quotes in the book's best chapter, the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Guatemala City, Viron Vaky, warned his superiors that the torture and mutilation practiced by the CIA trained and funded death squads was breaking down any semblance of law and order and everyone in Guatemala to the left of Hitler was turning against the U.S. During the years 1981-83 alone, the Guatemalan army killed about 100,000 Mayan peasants, destroyed 400 villages, etc. In a Nov. 1982 meeting with the dictator General Rios Montt, Reagan's handlers had him say that the General was being unfairly attacked for his human rights record, though the Inter-American affairs officer at the State Dept, had reported a month earlier that the military was regularly massacring people. In El Salvador, U.S. backed forces killed 60,000. In Nicaragua, the Contras did similar things. Reagan asst. Sec/State Thomas Enders suggested that the barbaric nature of U.S. allies in the region was hurting U.S. interests.

Now, in Central America, the poverty is worse than ever and the old oligarchs are still very much in control Democratic elections are held for the masses to choose between such elites. Such top down "democracy" is what at best the necons have in mind for their future projects in the Middle East. El Salvador has a murder rate of 120 per 1000 and horrible gang violence. The military in Guatemala terrorizes its enemies with shadowy gangs that are involved in drugs and racketeering. Thirty labor and peasant activists were murdered in the run-up to Guatemala's 2004 election. The U.S. forced its client govt. in Nicaragua after 1990 to more or less give up its claim to the 1986 World Court ruling which ordered the U.S. to pay billions in reparations for Contra terror. Grandin compares the poor social indicators in U.S. dominated Central America to those of Iran and Syria, two countries outside of U.S. domination (but maybe not for long!). He notes the similarity between the Bush administration manipulation of public opinion for going to war in Iraq and the Reagan administration's illegal Office of Public Diplomacy. Trying to stimulate a public largely not supportive of direct military intervention in Central America, the Reaganites through the OPD threw out a large number of false stories to the media about the Sandinista's running drugs, formenting terror in Costa Rica, etc. Meanwhile, mild COINTELPRO style operations, were launched against anti-intervention organizations and Oliver North drew up plans to intern anti-war activists.

Grandin notes apropos Central American death squads that the U.S. seems to have formed death squads in Iraq with selected Kurds, Shia and ex-Saddam agents converted to the Wolfowitz idealism. This probably includes the Wolf brigade as well new interior ministry commandos made up of ex Saddamists who seem to be responsible for some of the dead bodies lying on the roads and rivers in Baghdad. The new Iraqi Human rights minister recently estimated, confirmed by the State Dept, that about half of all detainees in prison in Iraq, have been beaten or tortured or other maltreatments.
