Book Description

In his critically acclaimed bestseller Rain of Gold, Victor Villase-or brought his mother's family vividly to life. In Wild Steps Of Heaven, he turns to his father's family, the Villase-ors. Against a vivid backdrop of love and war, magic and heroism, the author breathes life into his father's people--and in particular, the Villase-or women*Margarita, the indomitable matriarch who was swept away by Don Juan Jesus Villase-or on the eve of the Mexican revolution*their beautiful daughters, who find strength and endurance in their mother's faith, and searing passion amidst the turmoil of war. But it is little Juan, the youngest son, through whose eyes this tumultuous saga unfolds. Juan would learn from his brother Jose, a hero of the revolution, how to be a man; and from his beloved mother, how to live and love con gusto y amor.

A story of madness and miracles, rage and redemption, In Wild Steps Of Heaven creates a riveting portrait of an extraordinary family and the country whose earth gave them roots.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful book........2005-10-24

I first read "Wild Steps of Heaven" while I was in college. I have never been one who was able to finish a full book, but I couldn't get enough of this one. And once I was through with it I had to go out and find more books by Victor Villaseñor. He makes everything seem magical but at the same time believeable. It is like the ultimate adult fairy tale. Each character has so much life. The story is one that you just want to follow, you want it to keep going. Even the sad and painful stories shine with beauty as Villaseñor tells them. This is my absolute favorite book and I highly recommend it. You won't understand until you read it.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Steps of Heaven.......2001-07-04

Read this book before you read "Rain of Gold". "Wild Steps of Heaven" is a short read and actually the paternal part of the family story. I wish Villasenor had included the info in Wild Steps of Heaven" in "Rain of Gold". Both books are a wonderful patchwork of history, and genuine family integrity. Excellent summer read!

5 out of 5 stars Wild steps of heaven is magic.......2000-07-10

This is a wonderful book. This book is about a family living during the Mexican Revolution. His writing just takes into this magical world and even though you know that he has made a little piece of history into this great big piece of fiction, he does it so as a matter-of -fact that you just can't believe that it's not true.

5 out of 5 stars Epic Tale of Family Loyalty, Love, and Making of Heroes.......1998-09-27

In times of hardship heroes are needed and none moreso than in Mexico as revolution rages. The Villasenor family patriarch, an exiled red-haired Spaniard, has married an Indian woman. The first ten years of the marriage are a time of great love and passion, and the children born first are fair and favor Don Juan Villasenor. Later children are dark like their mother. One of the dark ones, Jose, from age 12 must live in the barn because he defied his father and gentled a stallion to rescue his baby brother holding onto the leg rather than shoot the horse. In his exile and solitude a hero begins his training with Grandfather Don Pio Castro who knows Jose understands the power of love and gentleness. This will be the son who defends la familia during the revolution from the soldiers who time and again attach the village. The colonel commanding the troops more particularly desires Jose's true love Mariposa and destroys her. Ultimately, the younger brother Juan (author Villasenor's father) begins to show heroic tendencies himself and will be the one to defend his mother and the remaining family against the colonel. Villasenor moves the tale along with a powerful, songlike cadence. Notable characters are the giant cousins, Basilio and Agustin, who strip naked and race the lightning and then Halley's comet on January 17, 1910, a night of magic and love, the day before el colonel begins shooting up the home village, el paraiso de Los Altos de Jalisco. Each chapter begins with epigrams featuring "Great Father Sun" that provide a sense of power from above, as in "the heavens smile . . . as all around him the gods and serpents did battle." When the final epigram tells us "and out of these children of the earth and of the stars would now come a glorious new gente in all their wonder and fire," we realize that while we have been traveling through an exciting story with more twists and turns than fiction, we also have been participating in something approximating a creation myth. Highly recommended is Villasenor's first tale of the family Villasenor, Rain of Gold.

      Book Description

Back in 2000, Histoire and Collections released two books by Jean Bouchery on the British Soldier in World War 2. Both books have been enormously successful.

This new book, in the same format, will appeal in the same way as its predecessors. There is an unprecedented amount of color artwork depicting uniforms, variants, insignia, badges and equipment used by Canada's soldiers in the Second World War.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Poor translation and terrible colour corrections.......2004-07-26

My review may be biased; I have published three books on Canadian Army uniforms and insignia myself. I commend Jean Bouchery for his efforts in assembling this book. Much information has not seen print before, and many photos of rare kit are an invaluable resource.

However, there are many errors of fact strewn through the book, indicating Bouchery's lack of direct experience with the Canadian military. The colour corrections to Canadian Battledress also render the book, in my opinion, not worth buying. Hopefully a corrected second edition is published - the publisher should really be raked over the coals for this, as the colour plates have been shifted drastically and are useless as even a general guide to Canadian uniform colours. Why print in colour if you are going to simply colour correct things outside the realm of normalcy?

Just about every page has a small error, but many are due to translation I think. Recommended for the experienced collector or historian, those just starting out are advised to be wary.

Still, much useful information if one can get past the presentation. I recommened buying this used or second-hand, until such time as a correction volume sees print.

      5 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Book!.......2003-12-30

Few military "picture books" have given me as much unexpected pleasure as this one. Having bought it by mail on the basis of its subject matter alone, I was very pleasantly surprised when it not only met - but exceeded - my expectations. Lavishly (dare I say beautifully) illustrated by abundant carefully selected and wonderfully reproduced photos and charts, it exhaustively covers almost all aspects of the Canadian soldier in Northwest Europe in the final year of World War II. The succinct text (written in homage by French authors, but adequately transcribed into English) provides a good outline against which to appreciate this visual material. While the treatment of any individual subject may not be as deep as that found in books dediciated to a specific topic, I can confidently say that no one single volume provides as much useful information as this one does!

      Book Description

The Anti-Federalists, in Herbert J. Storing's view, are somewhat paradoxically entitled to be counted among the Founding Fathers and to share in the honor and study devoted to the founding. "If the foundations of the American polity was laid by the Federalists," he writes, "the Anti-Federalist reservations echo through American history; and it is in the dialogue, not merely in the Federalist victory, that the country's principles are to be discovered." It was largely through their efforts, he reminds us, that the Constitution was so quickly amended to include a bill of rights.

Storing here offers a brilliant introduction to the thought and principles of the Anti-Federalists as they were understood by themselves and by other men and women of their time. His comprehensive exposition restores to our understanding the Anti-Federalist share in the founding its effect on some of the enduring themes and tensions of American political life. The concern with big government and infringement of personal liberty one finds in the writings of these neglected Founders strikes a remarkably timely note.

      4 out of 5 stars A rare source.......2005-11-03

The anti-federalists were really the federalists, they lost, and they're forgotten. Some of them predicted that if the constitution were adopted, even with the Bill of Rights, that the government it created would abuse its power and that there would be no agency to stop it. Imagine that!
Dr. Storing gives the antis a fair hearing, though he (mistakenly in my opinion) believes them wrong. I don't know of many other sources for that.

      5 out of 5 stars Whatever.......2000-11-08

Guy Smith complains that can't understand Herbert Storing's prose (but is this Storing's fault or Mr. Smith's? This was one of the most helpful books I read in graduate school, and I found Storing's writing academic, but accessible) and then makes errors in his critique! Unbelievable. This is an oustanding book by the person almost singularly responsible for recovering the thought of the anti-Federalists.

3 out of 5 stars Good info - poor writing.......2000-07-30

This book is a classic example of a potentially valuable resource nearly destroyed with poor prose. The well-studied Mr. Storing produced an almost unreadable book through the use of awkward sentence structure and the liberal intermixing of his prose and quotes from founding fathers. He main literary abuse is convoluted sentences, such as "In reply to all of these objections, the Anti-Federalists complained, they were told, . . . .". Simple declarative sentences would have made this a wonderful book., and not an exercise in frustration.

        Book Description

Why do Americans work so hard? Are the long hours spent at work really necessary to increase organizational productivity? Leslie A. Perlow documents the worklife of employees who assume that for their own success and the success of their organization they must put in extended hours on the job. Perlow doesn't buy it. She challenges the basic assumption that the more employees work, the better the corporation will do. For nine months, Perlow studied the work practices of a product development team of software engineers at a Fortune 500 corporation. She reports her findings in detailed stories about individual employees and in more analytic chapters. Perlow first describes the individual heroics necessary to succeed in the existing work culture. She then explains how the system of rewards perpetuates crises and continuous interruptions, while discouraging cooperation. Finally, she shows how the resulting work practices damage both organizational productivity and the quality of individuals' lives outside of work. Perlow initiated a collaborative effort to restructure the way team members worked. Managers who were involved credit the project for the rare and important on-time launch of the product the engineers were developing. In the end, "Finding Time" shows that it is possible to create new work practices that enable individuals to have more personal and family time while also improving the corporation's productivity.

5 out of 5 stars So true, its almost scary........2006-11-17

I work for a Tech company in Silicon Valley. It's been about 10 years since this book was written and it's amazing to me how little has changed since then. The work culture in Silicon Valley corporations mirrors that of "Ditto" corporation. People feel obligated to work long hours while sacrificing their personal lives. To me, reading this book has been an eye-opening experience. I am now aware of the havoc that the work/life balance equation can unleash on people's lives. I see shades of the characters covered in the book in my colleagues and friends. Awareness of these issues is the first step in defining your personal values at work.

        Good job, Leslie!

4 out of 5 stars Practical Techniques of Time Management.......2003-07-29

Time Management skills are essential for successful people the book deals with practical techniques, which have helped the leading people in business reach the pinnacles of their careers. The skills explained in the book helps you to become reliable and effective and show you how to identify and focus on the activities that give you the greatest returns by explaining goal setting, which is a vitally important skill for achieving what you want to achieve with your life. It is neatly summed up in the Pareto Principle, or the "80:20 Rule". This argues that typically 80% of unfocussed effort generates only 20% of results. The remaining 80% of results are achieved with only 20% of the effort. While the ratio is not always 80:20, this broad pattern of a small proportion of activity generating non-scalar returns recurs so frequently as to be the norm in many areas. It also talks about issues like learn to say no, learn to prioritize, combine several activities, doing subordinate's work, doing the work of others, scheduling projects, monitoring staff, and setting long-term objectives. The absence of personal time management is characterized by last minute rushes to meet deadlines, days, which seem somehow to slip unproductively by, crises, which loom unexpected from nowhere. This sort of environment leads to inordinate stress and degradation of performance. Poor time management is often a symptom of over confidence: techniques, which used to work with small projects and workloads, are simply reused with large ones. However, inefficiencies, which were insignificant in the small role, are ludicrous in the large. You cannot drive a motor bike like a bicycle, nor can you manage a supermarket-chain like a market stall. The demands, the problems, and the payoffs for increased efficiency are all larger as your responsibility grows; you must learn to apply proper techniques, or be bettered by those who do. Possibly, the reason Time Management is poorly practiced is that it so seldom forms a measured part of appraisal and performance review; what many fail to foresee, however, is how intimately it is connected to aspects, which do. Leslie Parlow's, excellent practical application of Time Management.By Vivek Dixit, Stanford.edu.

5 out of 5 stars Contains Constructive Ideas for Work Process Improvement.......2000-05-16

While this book explores work-family issues, it also gives concrete suggestions about how to improve management processes and allow workers more personal time without decreasing productivity. Essentially, the thesis of the book is that workers that can work uninterrupted for a significant period each day are more productive and efficient. This thesis is supported by a study done by the author at a Fortune 500 company named "Ditto" (probably Xerox in real life).

However, a depressing aspect of the book is that once higher productivity is achieved, Ditto Corp just piles on more work! Anyone who has worked in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment will be able to identify with the situations in this book.

In terms of action orientation, I found this book better than "Time Bind" by Arlie Hochschild. It also leaves out the liberal politics. Give it as an anonymous gift to the the CEO of your company!
