5 out of 5 stars Great book, great food.......2001-12-06

I love cookbooks and own a lot of them. I bought this book two years ago and have given many copies as gifts to peple who like to cook. My family loves the recipes. We made some of the recipes for my niece's wedding brunch in Denver last year and the guests raved about the food. The recipes and instructions are well-written and the results are great.

5 out of 5 stars What Can I Bring.......2000-08-02

This is a fantastic book. Lots of great recipes with new adaptions to ones that have been around for awhile. Using a different spice or combining of various ingredients gives news twists to old standbys and favorites. I am an avid reader of cookbooks and don't have that much time to cook now that my family is grown and left the nest, but with this book, I am very anxious to get back in the kitchen and create some new and exciting things. Cookbooks by Jr. Leagues always have some of the very best recipes and this one is certainly no exception. Highly recommend whether just for reading, or looking for something new and different.

5 out of 5 stars I love this Cookbook!.......2000-06-27

Of all the regional cookbooks I own, this is one of my favorites! This cookbook has great suggestions for things to take to different gatherings from Gold Cup Horse Races to Neighborhood Picnics. I especially love the tips and suggestions at the bottom of the recipes. So far, I have tried about 20 recipes and all of them have been fabulous! The recipes are clear and easy to follow. This book is a necessity for delicious homemade treats to impress your friends. It also makes a great bridal shower and teacher gift.

"In this wonderfully evocative volume, following the outstanding success of The Hornet's Nest, Christmas in Plains, and his classic, An Hour Before Daylight, Jimmy Carter writes about the things that matter most, the simple relaxed days and nights that he has enjoyed with family and friends through the years and across generations. Here are lively and witty accounts of exploring the outdoors with his father and with black playmates; making furniture; painting; pursuing new adventures and going places with children, grandchildren, and friends. He describes how he learned to share life with his wife, Rosalynn -- and how they both learned how to grant each other personal space -- and to compete with her on the tennis court, high mountains, trout streams, and ski slopes. These lifetime experiences can be an inspirational guide to anyone desiring to stretch mind and heart and to combine work and pleasure. "

From our greatest living statesman come more pearls of wisdom.
A kind and thoughtful man, husband and father, Jimmy Carter shares insightful stories of his life with friends and family. Learn how love and trust can carry us through the tuff times and reward us in the golden years.

4 out of 5 stars Memorable and defining moments.......2006-11-20

This book is not a biography per se rather a collection of the most pivotal moments in Jimmy Carter's life containing little "work" and much "play". In this collection of short stories we see Jimmy Carter the son, father, grandfather, climber, painter, and outdoorsman. The conspicuous lack of politics, apart from a brief couple of pages, establishes just how human Jimmy Carter really is. His greatest joys are his children and charitable works not the galas he has attended or the dignitaries he has met, making this a refreshing memoir.

4 out of 5 stars Can I just say that I loved this one. .......2006-08-28

This man is a dying breed. You really just wont find too many more Americans with value as true and with priorities leaning toward all of the right places. I just took away so much from this humble little book. I did not expect it. It did not floor me by any means but just spoke gentlty of one mans life as he shares it with the people around him.

At one point as he is campaining or going on a business trip or whatever he says to Rosalynn "Rosalynn I am going out of town, please pack my suitcase and I need pressed shirts blah blah blah. And she says right out of nowhere "pack it yourself". So he says that he was fuming really bad while he was packing his bag but from that day forward it was no longer his show only. They became partners in all of the decision making and even let the children in on it. You really dont see many people possessing such good manners/leadership/practicality/humilty and just real common sense intellegence in life today. And you certainly wont find anyone like that running for president. Please I hope I am proved wrong someday soon.

1 out of 5 stars Pap from the Sap.......2005-11-03

Where do I begin? This is such a dreadful book, full of Jimmy's flawed recollections, rewriting of history, and outright lies. He brags about his close relationship with dictators, like the murderous Kim Il Sung, with whom he conducated negotiations on his own, while President Clinton was trying to run a foreign policy.

Not being content with destroying the reputation of the US during his brief term, Jimmy then dogged Bill Clinton for eight years, travelling around the world courting the Nobel Prize comittee while certifying corrupt elections and similarly making Clinton's job in the international sphere that much more difficult. You won't find any admission of that here. (Nor will you find mention of the cryptically racist campaign he used to win one-term govenorship)

More recently, he's been on the move certifying electrons in dictatorships, in one case- Ethiopea- certifying the election as fair, and leaving the country before the votes were even counted!

Great men rarely write autobiographies; they leave that to historians. Books like these are written by petty men who have little to say aside from their own self-aggrandizement, and are looking to pre-empt historians looking for truth.

For a better, more accurate picture of Jimmy Carter, I'd suggest "The Real Jimmy Carter: How Our Worst Ex-President Undermines American Foreign Policy, Coddles Dictators, and Created the Party of Clinton and Kerry", by Steven F. Hayward.

3 out of 5 stars Lightweight book, but interesting to Carter fans.......2005-05-08

This is probably the most inconsequential of Carter's "mini-memoirs", having little of the timeless insight of, say, "An Hour Before Daylight" and covering some of the same ground. This one looks across Carter's entire life, though, and recounts some particularly memorable occasions he spent, well, sharing good times with friends.

I have to admit, though, that as a fan and admirer of Carter I did find it interesting to learn that he is an avid outdoorsman and hiker well into his later years. He has climbed to Everest base camp in his 60's and climbed Mount Fuji in his 70's. He's not above using the perks of his reputation to get a private tour of a world-famous museum that's closed for renovations, or to get a private nature tour in between overseeing third-world elections. In fact, the man requires that he get a tour from a licensed naturalist every place his visits while doing business for the Carter Center.

You might see the man as egocentric and maybe a bit daffy; I know many folks do. But I found myself dreaming that I was part of his inner circle, and hoping to imitate him in my own later years. I give it an objective three star rating, but add a star if you are a fellow Carter admirer.

          Book Description

Leisure and pleasure may never have been the top priority of prairie women, but the pursuit of joy has always been important. Today, the common perception of western women during the early settlement years is one of an overworked, stoic martyr. In a life filled with household drudgery, there could be no energy left for laughter and fun. That perception is as misleading as the generalizations that women didn't want or have political power in the years before the First World War, that they did not work outside the home or that all women desired marriage and children. The lives of western Canadian women settlers were difficult, it's true, but history has often overlooked the fun, joyfulness and frivolity to be found even in the midst of hardship. Filled with excerpts of the writing of women from 1870 to 1960, interviews, and many archival photos, this book takes a look at the lighter side of prairie women's lives. From love, marriage and family, to community activities, arts and crafts, sports, travel and much more, this book is a lively complement to any history buff's collection.

                  Book Description

As Allied and German armies fought on the ground in the Battle of the Bulge, an equally desperate battle raged in the skies overhead, as enemy air forces fought the weather and each other for supremacy. Acclaimed author Danny Parker completes the narrative begun in his highly successful Battle of the Bulge. He covers the important and previously unexplored air aspect of a famous land battle. Those who thought they were thoroughly familiar with Hitler's last offensive will find a wealth of new information here, including exclusive interviews with war-time airmen, over 100 rare photos, the unknown story of German MIAs, Luftwaffe jets and other secret weapons, losses in men and aircraft for both sides from government archives, aircraft performance comparisons, and the innovations in tactics and technology that made victory for one side possible and defeat for the other side inevitable. Through all the facts and figures, Danny Parker weaves a compelling narrative about the airmen on both sides in the last desperate days of World War II, about their conflicts with the enemy and among themselves as they stood on the brink of victory--and defeat. As the end of the war drew near, Allied leaders were divided between British and Americans, air and ground commanders, and advocates of strategic and tactical air operations. On the German side, Luftwaffe leaders Hermann Göring and Dietrich Peltz sought to obey every order to the bitter end, while Luftwaffe fighter commander Adolf Galland struggled to save his last reserves of young pilots from a final and futile slaughter. Danny S. Parker is a former research consultant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the Battle of the Bulge, and is the author of "Ten Percent Chance of Victory: The Last Operation of the German Airborne," and The Battle of the Bulge. He is highly regarded by veterans, historians, and active-duty military personnel.

4 out of 5 stars A book by an american to americans.......2002-09-03

This book offers very detailed information about american and allied operations, it starts in a very interesting way but the central part of the book is almost impossible to read. And why? Because it's an hipnotic list of allied bombardments and easy air victories, there's no references to german successes, all victories of the german fighter squadrons seem like never had taken place and its pilots were flying ducks. In this very american perspective, and the way in which the writer puts it, the comparison of losses is highly doubtful or incorrect.
Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to your collection and also, that you go investigate and buy more books about the air war in europe to form your oppinion.

5 out of 5 stars Air action above the Battle of the Bulge.......2002-01-02

Parker is a dedicated historian. He has researched the records of the USAAF and RAF squadrons, and of the Luftwaffe Staffels involved in the last German offensive of World War II. In TO WIN THE WINTER SKY Parker faithfully reports their many actions. The book is rich with maps and photographs of the planes and personnel whose battles Parker chronicles. The text describes the many difficulties presented by that tough winter, as well as the uncertainties of operating from Belgian bases only a few miles from advancing German divisions. The battle was a brutal slugfest, in the air as on the ground.

I know no better history of the crucial roles played by the air forces throughout the 1944-45 winter battle over the Ardennes. Its detail answers many questions. For instance, I have long wondered whether the new Douglas A-26 Invader had been involved in the Battle of the Bulge. In "Winter Sky," I found my answer. The A-26 was employed by the 409th and, if a caption is correct on p. 274, the 416th Bomber Groups of the 97th Combat Bomb Wing. (I was curious because of my admiration for that great airplane, which went on to serve in the Korean and Vietnam wars.)

My only criticism is that Parker's approach to writing history is almost too thorough for me. Parker sacrifices readability for consistency, being careful to pay attention to all involved squadrons, and the book becomes monotonous as it chronicles so many daily actions, as taken from so many squadron reports. Hence, as a reviewer I am torn between four stars and five. I have decided to rate the book on its contribution to the history of WWII. As such, "Winter Sky" earns top marks.

                  5 out of 5 stars A master-writer piece of work !.......1999-07-27

I bought this book in 1995. Mr.Parker wrote an outstanding book that relates the air and ground aspects of the Battle of the Bulge, of course giving enphase to the former. He deals with both American and German air units involved in the operation, placing the action under chapters according to the date of the events (for example, December, 16th, 1994), and makes a high opinion of Ninth Air Force units who really helped to stall the German advance through the Ardennes.

                  5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2004-10-20

This is comparative history writing at its best. I am in awe.
I picked up this thick book thinking I'd just poke around at a few of the chapters but I found myself so drawn by it that I had to go back and read it from start to end (all 550+ pages). Anderson isn't just interested in historical detail, he's interested in trying to shed understanding on big fundamental questions such as why was serfdom re-imposed in the East at the same time that it was collapsing in the West, why absolutism arose at the time it did and took different shapes in different regions. Solidly argued and authoritative, I can say without exageration that this is one of the most important history books I have ever read (scratch that, this is simply one of the most important BOOKS I've ever read). It changed the way I think about economic development, absolutism and nation states.
It is also well written. I found myself reading the book almost like a novel. No sooner had I finished a chapter on say Prussia that I found myself unable to put the book down because I wanted to find out what was similar but different in Poland, or Russia. Anderson has framed the questions so nicely that you just keep begging for more.

This is the second volume of the two part work. The first volume is ¡®Passages from Antiquity to Feudalism¡¯. On a review of the first volume, I explained the purpose of the work. So I¡¯ll go directly to the content of the second volume.
This volume deals with the absolute monarchies. Absolute monarchies emerged from the crisis of feudalism which was tackled in the first volume. Anderson begins with the conventional consensus: Absolute monarchies are the reconstruction of feudal state to defend the interest of ruling class. Anderson overviews the path various countries like Spain, France, England, Italy, Sweden, Prussia, Poland, Austria, Russia, Islamic world, and Japan followed from the 16th century to the emergence of modern nation-states. The reason he covered Eastern Europe is the same one as he does in the first volume: comparative study. he argues that Western absolutism are different from Eastern absolutism. They follow different lineages. The aim of this volume is to answer the question, why the capitalism emerged in Western Europe just like the first volume. But the main point of the second volume lies in comparing Western Europe and Eastern Europe. Why did seemingly the same absolutism diverged?

                            Book Description

Across America and around the world, people are

working to help nature heal itself. In Bermuda, a man

single-handedly grows thousands of trees on a small

island to restore nesting habitat for a rare seabird. In

Illinois, legions of volunteers replant prairies in the

shadows of freeways. In Virginia, a farmer works to

bring back the mighty American chestnut.

What drives these individuals? How did their passions

come about, and what are the implications for

restoring the environment? NatureÂ's Restoration: People and Places on the

Front Lines of Conservation is a lyrical look at these and other examples

of ordinary citizens aiming to return sizable tracts of the American

landscape to nature, and to health. TheyÂ've found success in preserving

rare species, reversing negative ecological trends, and promoting

                            greater intimacy with nature.

Yet the work is far from simple. Restoration projects are often in the

news not only because of the promise they hold, but also because of

the controversy they provoke. Based on detailed reporting and numerous

interviews, NatureÂ's Restoration puts us on the front lines of

restoration to learn how this burgeoning national movement shapes

                            both places and people.

Let's face it, picking up most environmental books, with their relentless message of doom and gloom, seems to require a talent for masochism or depression. And it's only gotten worse: in the 1970s environmentalists worried about polluted rivers or violated public lands, but now its planetary disasters like global warming, resource depletion, or mass extincitons; and the human race hasn't been showing much talent at facing these realities. How refreshing, then, to come upon a book that inspires environmental hope. The concept of environmental restoration, the idea that humans can nurse damaged landscapes back into health, has been quietly gathering momentum for years, and this book finally brings its thinking and its leaders and its dramas into full view. Peter Friederici is uniquely placed to write this story, since he has been involved in two of the leading restoration efforts in America, the efforts to restore prairies in Illinois and ponderosa pine forests in the Southwest. In addition to these places this book offers an even greater variety of landscapes, from an Hawaiian island long used for military target practice to a Bermuda invaded by luxury developments to ghost chestnut forests in Virginia to a flooded canyon in the Southwest. That such a variety of landscapes can be addressed by the same concept of restoration is a testimony to its value. Friederici also comes up with an amazing cast of characters who are involved in restoration efforts, people deeply in love with their land, dreamers enough to take on a major challenge yet practical enough to maneuver through complicated politicial realities. Restoration involves some philosophical challenges to our usual sense of nature, including challenges to environmentalists. Here in northern Arizona environmentalists will walk through a grotesquely unnatural forest, the product of a century of logging and fire suppression, a forest almost groomed to produce catastrophic fires, and yet they will feel a naive, book-induced sense of oneness with primordial nature and will oppose any interventions in the forest. Environmental restoration includes the paradox that the only way to return the land to pre-pioneer "naturalness" is through further human intervention. Thus restoration efforts have been opposed both by developers and by environmentalists. The political complexities faced by restoration efforts are also explored in this book. But amid all the complexities, Friederici maintains a poetic feel for the land and offers graceful philosophical musings on the place of humans in nature.
