Reading his wife's lyrical yet frank memoir of their turbulent marriage, it's easy to see why Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) depicted her as the prince's beloved, difficult Rose in his most famous book, The Little Prince. The French writer's feelings for his Salvadoran wife were passionate from the moment they met in Buenos Aires. On that very first day in 1930, he cajoled her aboard his airplane, even though she was afraid of flying, and extorted a kiss by cutting the engine and threatening to drown them both in the waters below. He proposed marriage just a few days later, and the revolution roiling Argentina was hardly more unsettling for Consuelo than the emotions aroused by her swashbuckling aviator-author. "For you I am nothing but a dream," she explains. "But I want you to know I am not an object or a doll; I don't change faces on command." Blending the everyday with the abstract in a style reminiscent of The Little Prince's elliptical prose, Consuelo limns a man who loved her yet couldn't resist the adulation of other women or sit still long enough to build a life together. "You're the kind of man who is constantly in need of struggle, conquest," she tells him. "Leave, then. Leave." So off he went, on flights that often ended in crashes while she waited anxiously (but seldom patiently)--until he vanished for good during a wartime reconnaissance mission in 1944. Written a year later but unpublished until 2000, when it became a bestseller in France, Consuelo's portrait reveals a Saint-Exupéry far more human than the tragic, mythical hero constructed by his worshipful countrymen. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Consuelo and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry met in Buenos Aires in 1930—she a seductive young widow, he a brave pioneer of early aviation, decorated for his acts of heroism in the deserts of North Africa. He was large in his passions, a fierce loner with a childlike appetite for danger. She was frail and voluble, exotic and capricious. Within hours of their first encounter, he knew he would have her as his wife.
Their love affair and marriage would take them from Buenos Aires to Paris to Casablanca to New York. It would take them through periods of betrayal and infidelity, pain and intense passion, devastating abandonment and tender, poetic love. The Tale of the Rose is the story of a man of extravagant dreams and of the woman who was his muse, the inspiration for the Little Prince’s beloved rose—unique in all the world—whom he could not live with and could not live without.

love.......2007-08-28
You ,Amazon, recommended it to me . It told me so much more of the writer of "Little Prince ". nana --- It arrived on time and was in great condition.
Don't put too much faith in the subtitle.......2007-05-24
Consuelo de Saint-Exupery writes with a unique voice and offers a glimpse into the life of her husband, Antoine, and her own life in his shadow. It is not an autobiography of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, nor should one expect the presence of the Little Prince throughout the entirety of her account. There is a build-up and a myriad of experiences behind the "love story" and Consuelo does a fantastic job of documenting the significant events.
It was very interesting to read her account of the time she spent alone, both during the time she was stationed in the desert and World War Two.
Dissenting view.......2007-03-02
As American Idol judge Randy Jackson would say: "You want me to keep this real, don't you?" Well, the reality is that anyone coming to Consuelo de Saint Exupery's THE TALE OF THE ROSE is arriving by way of THE LITTLE PRINCE, and any interest there is in what this woman has to say is directly related to her role as her husband's muse and as his inspiration for the Rose in his classic tale. Sadly, the reality is also that THE LITTLE PRINCE is mentioned here exactly once, on page 293 (hardcover edition), a betrayal of the promise implied by the book's subtitle, THE PASSION THAT INSPIRED THE LITTLE PRINCE.
The remaining 307 pages are the disjointed ramblings of a meritless opportunist. It's hard to know where to lay the blame in matters of style and tone (awful and awfuler) in a translated work such as this, but blame for the excruciatingly dull content can safely be laid at the author's feet. This is a long slog through the tedious facts of a dysfunctional relationship with no insight whatsoever into her own or her husband's actions. She is self-centered and self-serving. More disheartening, however, is the depiction of Antoine de Saint Exupery. I think it is natural while reading THE LITTLE PRINCE to equate the author with the Pilot and therefore to romanticize him. How disappointing to discover he is a deceitful lout.
Of course this is only one side of the story, and at some point in the future I will seek out an objective biography of Antoine. Sadly, this memoir has done nothing to enhance my appreciation of his great work. In fact just the opposite is true, and so for now the Little Prince's star is shining a little less brightly.
Words from a beautiful heart.......2006-02-24
Indeed, she was a true admirer of beauty trying her best to find happiness in small small things around her. Written with honesty, passion and for herself.
Great read... not such a great lady.......2006-01-23
I have pretty mixed feelings about this whole book. The book itself is a super-fast paced read. I couldn't put it down and read the whole thing in a day. The writing stays interesting, maybe because it's like a 60-year old tabloid story involving Antoine de St. Exupery... I mean, come on, what's not to like?
But all the reviews talk about Consuelo as some kind of great woman who was incredibly strong, and even with her self-aggrandizing way of writing, I can't buy that.
In my opinion she was a 1930's Paris Hilton, living off the celebrity of the people around her and never doing anything constructive herself. She even had a little Pekinese dog! But Antoine, or as she calls him, Tonio, hardly gives her any attention throughout their 13 year marriage, and when he does, it's just to lie to her so that she won't leave. He continuously "breaks her heart" until she faints or cries or "something breaks inside her", which just makes me wonder, how often can the same person do the same thing to you before everyone around you stops feeling sorry for you and tells you to get over it and leave?
She knows he has mistresses, she knows he doesn't love her, and she follows him around and complains about how miserable he makes her. But, anyway, maybe that's just me being middle-class and I don't understand how the rich and their relationships work... I guess providing her with the last name de St. Exupery and making sure she never had to work is what real love is about...
Anyway, but regardless of how I feel about her, the book itself is a great read and will really make you feel differently about The Little Prince. It's a different side of Mr. Antoine de St. Exupery that you never knew about. So, check it out.

Book Description
Synonymous with such infamous battleships as the Bismarck, Scharnhorst and Tirpitz, the German Navy (or Reichsmarine) was renamed the Kriegsmarine in 1935, shortly after the emergence of the Nazi State, and went through a major re-organization in 1939. During World War II, it became a much-feared adversary both on and beneath the high seas, with its marauding U-boat wolf packs coming close to defeating Britain in the Battle of the Atlantic. The author of this text examines the different roles of the Fleet, and its organization and training activities during the war years. Incidents and operations are described, together with technical data for ships, U-boats and their weaponry. A guide to German Navy uniforms and insignia is included, together with full details of rank structure and specialist trades.

German Navy - Great!.......2001-02-15
This is the best account thus far in my reading experiences on the Germany Navy. This book not only describes how the German navy evolved throughout the course of World War II but how it evolved in the post-World War I world leading up and into WWII. This is a great buy even though the amount of money is a little steep.

Book Description
Reichmarschall Hermann Goring's Luftwaffe was the most pro-Nazi of the three services. As well as aviation units, the Luftwaffe included airborne forces and units of ground troops. The Luftwaffe was at the forefront of the dramatic German Blitzkrieg successes of the early part of the war, with dive-bombers working in close cooperation with armored units on the ground. As the tide of the war turned, the Luftwaffe was unsuccessful in preventing the destruction of German cities and industry by Allied bombers, despite the development of a highly effective night-fighter force. The latter years of the war saw the development of new, technologically advanced aircraft that were light years ahead of anything the Allies were considering, such as jet fighters, rocket-propelled aircraft, 'flying wings' and many others. As well as examining the Luftwaffe's organization and command structure, strategy, tactics, research and development, Gordon Williamson provides brief biographies of its most important figures, from field marshals to individual fighter pilots. He also surveys key aircraft types, uniforms and insignia to provide a comprehensive summary of the Luftwaffe in action between 1935 and 1945.

Handbook on German Military Forces.......2007-01-23
If you're looking for the nuts and bolts of what made the WW2 German army, this is the book. A very nice overview of the entire military machine. As a historian and WW2 German reenactor I liked the coverage of military tactics from army to platoon, as well as the coverage from tanks and airplanes to individual field gear. Weapons, boots, bread bags, radios and all the field gear are covered along with lesser known machines like field kitchens and bread makers! Highly recommended.
WWII Enthusiast Heaven.......2005-08-12
Totally comprehensive review of everything about the Wehrmacht from their biggest guns down to their canteens. Massive review of the organizational structure of all elements from the leadership down to breakdowns of divisions, tactics, etc...The claim on the back that Marshall might have known more about the Wehrmacht than Hitler seems plausible. This is a real gem.
Excellent fact book of the German Army........2001-10-13
This an outstanding book of facts and data whose main scope is the German Army. Although the name of the book refers to the whole German armed forces in reality the coverage is wide for the Army, light for the Air Force and almost non-existent for the Navy. The information it contains is extremely detailed (in particular in tables of organization and equipment of many divisions) and on the whole very accurate (although not without the ocassional flaw: a schwärme is referred as a tactical unit of 5 airplanes but in reality was a 4 airplane unit).
Although it provides information from 1939 to 1945 the information relating to the tables of organization, tactics, equipment and uniforms refers mainly to the period 1944-45.
For example, you can find the TO&E of an army and SS panzerdivision in 1944 but not in 1939 or 1940.
Also, it is important to note that due to the nature of the book it is mainly a WHAT and HOW book (provides data and factual information )but is not a WHY book. That is, you will notice that a motorized infantry battalion differs organizationaly from a regular infantry battalion but it is not explained WHY. Other books give the explanation. This is not a problem with the book, it is just its scope. Overall it is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in the details that are not covered in most WW2 books.
The Authority.......2000-12-07
An absolute must have for anyone interested in the German military of World War II. A very technical guide that does not waste time with flowery documentation.
This is the ultimate guide........1999-10-18
This is the ultimate guide to German forces in the Second World War. Although produced late in the war, it covers the old type of infantry division. I thought that was a nice touch. This book teaches us not only about Germans, but what their contemporary counterparts were thinking. Want to crawl around indide the heads of American Intelligence Officers from another era? This is the book.

Highly Insightful.......2006-07-14
This highly insigtful reprint of war department intelligence on Germany's WWII militery is really quite helpful for those interested in German militery things of WWII. Covers as much as the US could learn about Germany's armed forces down to the most trivial of things such as field kitchens and rations. And will provide the reader insights into the mindset of the American militery intelligence of the period.
Covers weapons uniforms ranks and decorations, unit formations in some detail, as well as background in regards to Training and mindset. One can feel the respect American Intelligence Officers felt for their enemy as well as their pride in the intelligence they had assembled for allied officers to defeat them.
It has some mistakes in regards to German navy warrent officers, (Actual rank titles Deckofficer and Oberdeckofficer) and a few other areas but otherwise pretty good.
A must have for anyone interested in WWII.
Blitzkrieg.......2001-10-10
The book is very useful on the basic knowledge of german military force. The book has much emphasis on the development of what is to come, and less on what has been utilized. It is a great resource for wwii history buffs and/or wwiionline game players.
Nazi army organization & weapons, & how the latter were used.......1998-04-02
Far as I can tell, this is the same book as the one published in '95 which still appears to be in print. I found this book to contain a wealth of information about the WWII German army's organization and weapons, and how (some of) these weapons (e.g., mines) were employed. The only drawback was that it was originally published in '43 or '44 such that most of the details were for what the U.S. Army might still face, and less on equipment that was used earlier in the war. For my purposes (wargame design and development) it is a very useful book.

Book Description
From the opening shots of World War II in Poland in September 1939, through the blitzkrieg to the fall of France and the Low Countries, the German Army was at the forefront of battle. It remained in the thick of the action right up until the last desperate shots were fired over the ruins of a crumbling Third Reich in May 1945. The German Army was at the cutting edge of 20th-century military technology. Before the emergence of the US Army as a force to be reckoned with later in World War II, the German Army was the most powerful, efficient and well-equipped fighting force in the world. This text takes a look at the German Army, as it origins in the post-Versailles Treaty era and its resurgence under the Nazi regime; training and organization during the war years; equipment, vehicles and weapons; uniforms, rank and insignia.

very disappointing.......2001-10-25
Ah, this book was a big disappointment. I owned Steve Zaloga's Soviet Army Handbook of the same series and I though it to be excelelnt, well researched and detailed. This one is not.
It is very superficial, contains inaccuracies and lacks the organisationsl details needed for any book of this series.
I would not advice anyone to but this book, I will try to sell mine. sorry.
German Army NoteBook!.......2001-09-18
To short in many points.
Mr Lucas should have left to other the review of the small arms and tanks (there is so many anyway).
The Doctrine of the Nazi party is not inlight by a german vision of the "Volks" (people) of the time, but by a analysis of a contemporaty Britannic Vision.
I could sound desapointed or even more betray by the title of this book, because I've read and I owned many military books of the subject (Wehrmacht und Heer und Waffen SS Deutsh Armee)I did'nt expect to see author writing truncated version of Order of Battles that much.
The book is intended to neophyte of the World War II period. Serious reader and poeple seaching for details aspect of the German Army should look somewhere else, like for Order of Battles it would be the much sought-after series of Goerges F. Nafziger, or for Small Arms and Tanks the Arms & Armour series and for Campains the Opsrey Series

Holy resource!.......2001-02-12
This book is incredible. It gives you all the logistical information you can handle. It covers what weapons were produced when, the specs on army equipment, and better yet it includes a great forward by Mr. Ambrose! This book will tell you how many panzers made up a tank batallion in 1939 and 1945. It goes far beyond that in depth. A tremendous resource.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in the breakdown of the Wehrmacht before and during the Second World War.

Less dry and harsh than most texts books. Not a bad read, full of good, unbiased info, and presents imporatant info well. The text is presented in a way that makes since and the fluff really only backs up the main points well rather than adding so much to the mix its hard to understand. However, as good as it is, its still a text book!!

Ask any resident of a rural area about hunting season in their community and you're sure to get their favorite stories: the malamute that was mistaken for a wolf and shot by that fellow from New York, or the guy driving back to Boston with a goat strapped to his fender, convinced he'd bagged a deer. The tensions and prejudices between country and city are never more evident than during hunting season, and in The Hunter's Game, Louis S. Warren provides an interesting historical perspective to the subject. According to Warren, until the turn of the century, hunting was unregulated, and for many working-class people it was a way to supplement their family's diet. Then the government intervened, designating wildlife as a community resource that had to be managed, and a kind of war broke out between mostly immigrant communities and the wildlife officers sent to enforce new regulations.
What makes The Hunter's Game more than just an interesting anecdote about a historical event is Warren's persuasive argument that hunter's rights and the government's ability to regulate them is emblematic of the sometimes uneasy relationship between individuals and their government. Nearly 100 years later, balancing the individual's rights with the greater good of society is still a contentious issue on many fronts, and the story Louis S. Warren tells is more relevant than ever.
Book Description
This provocative book takes a new look at the angry struggles between American conservationists and local hunters since the rise of wildlife conservation at the end of the 1800s.
