Book Description
The House on Garibaldi Street is the true story of one of this century's most audacious intelligence operations - the kidnapping of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina by the Mossad, Israel's secret intelligence service. In a daring operation which shook the world, a team of elite Mossad agents, under the personal command of the legendary Mossad leader Isser Harel, kidnapped Eichmann and smuggled him to Israel. Eichmann's trial received unparalleled media coverage, and brought home to millions around the world the horror of the Holocaust through its principal co-ordinator. Eichmann was found guilty of genocide and was executed two years later. Harel's account was first published in 1975 and won world acclaim, being translated into more than 20 languages and selling more than a million copies. This new edition has been completely revised and updated. For the first time the real names and details of all Mossad personnel are revealed, as are important diplomatic contacts which shed new light on the political acceptability of the kidnapping, the operation being officially sanctioned not only by Israel, but also by West Germany. Shlomo Shpiro who worked personally with Isser Harel on the preparation of this new edition is an Israeli scholar specialising in intelligence and security issues. The House on Garibaldi Street has all the suspense, action and drama of a classic intelligence story - it is also an engrossing account to rival the best spy fiction.

The best in its class.........2007-09-04
After reading various books on espionage, covert operations and israel intellingence, I haven't found anything so detailed, clearly and methodically narrated. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the holocaust .... The best..
Early days in the snatch and run business? Truth or fiction.......2007-04-21
I agree with Reviewer: Eric Maroney. A lot of it just didn't add up to me. Particularly the timing of the snatch and
some way over the top preparations (eg. teams arriving plane itineraries, the many rental cars, many rental houses, the roving cafe headquarters, the doctors certificate).
I mean reading this, Mr. Harel is talking as tho he's planning on holding off a siege once he gets Eichmann into a safe house (he calls them fortresses).
He talks of constructing hideouts within these rental houses, building secret passages in them, of installing "innocent families" as cover.
He sounds like he's going to stay in Argentina forever! Better safe than sorry, you say? These guys were making spectacles of themselves.
Mr. Harel knew the days when the plane was going to arrive (may 19) and depart (may 21). Yes the days had been postponed twice from the orig. May 11 date, but so what. All they had to do was snatch Eichmann and get em on the plane. KISS
Instead they grabbed him May 11 and held him. for ten days!! Doing so put them in much greater risk. Plus their guys were bitching cuz they had to wash and feed Eichmann and fake out the neighbors.
Where was Eichmann's place of work anyway? They never followed him from his house to his work. Why? Weren't they even curious as to what he did for a living?. Why was Eichmann living in such poverty (no indoor plumbing or electricity)?
It sounded like one big over-the-top disorganized mess.
Some parts lack veracity.......2006-11-30
Most reviews here stress the "true" elements of this book, and there is no doubt that a team of Mossad agents captured Eichmann in Argentina and brought him successfully back to Israel for trial under Harel's direction. But many scholars have doubted some of Harel's assertions. To see some of these, I suggest "Israel's Secret Wars" by Benny Morris and Tom Segev's section on the Eichmann trial in "The Seventh Million: The Israelis and the Holocaust." Both scholars offer illuminating and critical comments on Harel's account.
Two elements which strike me as lacking plausibility is the account Harel gives of his attempts to capture Mengele while holding Eichmann. He continually stresses how time consuming the Eichmann mission is, but then devotes valuable time to hunting down Mengele. This parts seems apologetic: he is responding to (later) criticism of not being able to capture Mengele. In another part, Harel instructs the agent who will be handcuffed to Mengele if the transport to the airport is botched to inform the authorities of Harel's location. This seems the height of implausibility. Would the head of the Mossad offer his head up to the Argentinean authorities? He would be just the man who should NOT be captured in such a mission.
That said, this is an compelling book that is hard to stop reading. The reader just needs to keep aware that a book such as this will often have more motivations than simply telling the "truth."
true intelligence trumps fiction again.......2005-09-14
After months of search, I found and read this thriller. Here is a true story of daring, resourcefulness, dedication, and diligence in bringing to justice a mass murderer.
How the Mossad did this without beepers, cellphones, pagers, walkie-talkies or other "modern" paraphernalia of the espionage trade makes for non-stop fascinating reading. Not to be missed!!
An illuminating book about the world ot espionage.......2001-12-13
This book is a must read for those who are fasinated by the shadowy world of espionage. A magnificant account of the capture of the nazi war criminal Adolf Eichman, by the Mossad. Written by the chief Israeli spy master, Isser Harel, it is an in depth discription of how Eichman was found, tracked, captured, smuggled out of Argentina, and brought to trial. Get your hands on this book, it is truely amazing.

Excerpt from The Spymasters of Israel by Stewart Steven.......2005-02-14
I would like to share this interesting excerpt from the book "The Spymasters of Israel" by Stewart Steven regarding Isser Harel, Abba Eban, and the capture of Eichmann:
Harel persuaded [El Al] directors to make a Britannia available, offically to fly in the Israeli delegation led by Abba Eban, who was then the Israeli Permanent Delegate to the United Nations, but in actuality in order to have transport available to fly Eichmann out after his Capture.
Abba Eban was not told the real purpose behind the special flight, and when he discovered it, angerily denounced those responsible for compromising his own diplomatic status by making it apper that he was an active participant in a breach of international law thus reducing his moral stature at the United Nations. His mood was not helped when an Isser Harel remark drifted back to him to the effect that the only man in Israeli official life who would not for a moment wonder why an El Al Britannia was being made available for him-and, indeed, would regard it simply as showing proper deference to his position-was Abba Eban. Eban, many believe, got his own back when Harel left the service. Harel was anxious to publish his account of the Eichmann capture, but because of Eban's resistance in Cabinet had to wait fifteen years before his book got into print. Amusingly perhaps, though the names of other V.I.P. passengers on the special flight figure in the book, Abba Eban's name appears nowhere. Harel has always had a long memory.
You can't put it down........2003-12-01
This is the fascinating true story of how the Israeli security forces carefully plotted to track down, capture, and return Adolf Eichmann to Israel for trial. It reads like the very best spy fiction, but it's doubly engrossing because it all really happened. You come away with deep appreciation and admiration for the brilliant minds working in the Mossad, as well as with a sense of the banality of evil (Eichmann is a piteous figure). This isn't classic literature or anything, but it is extremely well done and utterly entertaining. Highly recommended!
Best True Life Action/Mystery/Thriller Book in the World.......1999-05-10
Isser Harel (name incorrect above) was Mossad chief during the search for Eichmann. This is a fascinating, gripping, true story.

Book Description
In November of 1964, as Lyndon Johnson celebrated his landslide victory over Barry Goldwater, the government of South Vietnam lay in a shambles. Ambassador Maxwell Taylor described it as a country beset by "chronic factionalism, civilian-military suspicion and distrust, absence of national spirit and motivation, lack of cohesion in the social structure, lack of experience in the conduct of government." Virtually no one in the Johnson Administration believed that Saigon could defeat the communist insurgency--and yet by July of 1965, a mere nine months later, they would lock the United States on a path toward massive military intervention which would ultimately destroy Johnson's presidency and polarize the American people. Into the Quagmire presents a closely rendered, almost day-by-day account of America's deepening involvement in Vietnam during those crucial nine months. Mining a wealth of recently opened material at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and elsewhere, Brian VanDeMark vividly depicts the painful unfolding of a national tragedy. We meet an LBJ forever fearful of a conservative backlash, which he felt would doom his Great Society, an unsure and troubled leader grappling with the unwanted burden of Vietnam; George Ball, a maverick on Vietnam, whose carefully reasoned (and, in retrospect, strikingly prescient) stand against escalation was discounted by Rusk, McNamara, and Bundy; and Clark Clifford, whose last-minute effort at a pivotal meeting at Camp David failed to dissuade Johnson from doubling the number of ground troops in Vietnam. What comes across strongly throughout the book is the deep pessimism of all the major participants as things grew worse--neither LBJ, nor Bundy, nor McNamara, nor Rusk felt confident that things would improve in South Vietnam, that there was any reasonable chance for victory, or that the South had the will or the ability to prevail against the North. And yet deeper into the quagmire they went. Whether describing a tense confrontation between George Ball and Dean Acheson ("You goddamned old bastards," Ball said to Acheson, "you remind me of nothing so much as a bunch of buzzards sitting on a fence and letting the young men die") or corrupt politicians in Saigon, VanDeMark provides readers with the full flavor of national policy in the making. More important, he sheds greater light on why America became entangled in the morass of Vietnam.

Review of Into the Quagmire.......2001-04-24
Very often the American public has tended to view Lyndon Johnosn as the evil villian who escalated America's involvement in the warr in Vietnam. However, few people, including historians, know how the escalation came about. In this book Brian VanDeMark does not try to justify the decisions that were made between 1964 and 1968, but tries and explain how those decisions came about. VanDeMark also shows how Johnson slowly and reluctantly led the United States deeper into what has often been called the "quagmire" of Vietnam. VanDeMark balmes the American Policy maker's ignorance of the culture and politics of Southeast Asia for the slow deepening of the conflict. VanDeMark gives teh reader a very good view of how this happened by carrying the reader through almost every major decision made by the Johnson administration throughout this time period. Writen in a very readable style the near day-to-day account helps to emphasize the snowball effect of the events. The author uses a good range of source material for this book. THere is a strong reliance on government manuscripts and primary sources of the administration. He also includes oral histories and interviews. It is by using these sources and many quotations that VanDeMark is able to carry the reader through the day-to-day accounts of what happened. This book is very important for anyone interested in the VIetnam war or American foreign policy.

Introduced in 1962, silicone breast implants had been used by between one and two million women by the time they were virtually banned in 1992 by David A. Kessler of the Food and Drug Administration. While the ban came about because manufacturers had failed to demonstrate the safety of the devices, Marcia Angell, executive editor of The New England Journal of Medicine, argues that there actually was no medical consensus to support the contention that implants could cause widespread illness. Science on Trial examines the silicone debate and argues for the reliance on scientific evidence "to curb the greed, fear and self-indulgence" of such disputes.
Book Description
In the early 1990s, sympathetic juries awarded huge damages to women claiming injury from silicone breast implants, leading to a $4.25 billion class-action settlement that still wasn't large enough to cover all the claims. Shockingly, rigorous scientific studies of breast implants have now shown that there is no significant link between breast implants and disease. Why were the courts and the public so certain that breast implants were dangerous when medical researchers were not? The answer to this question reveals important differences in the way science, the law, and the public regard evidence--and not just in the breast implant controversy.
Customer Reviews:
Science Triumphs.......2004-01-12
I read this book back in 1996 before the issue of implant safety was settled. I recall the impression it made on me with regard to the widespread ignorance that surrounds us, not only on specific scientific principles but also on the whole idea of the scientific method. This book illustrates why hypotheses and theories can never be evaluated by a court of law. It also illustrates why in any critical review of data one must have a control. If the incidence of a disorder is the same in a group getting implants as it is in a group that does not get implants then it is impossible to reasonably argue that there is any connection between implants and the disorder. Silicone is one of the most inert materials around and people are exposed to it all the time. I strongly recommend this book for anyone looking for further proof that our schools do not teach science adequately.
Medical evidence vs court testimony vs belief.......2003-02-03
Please note that the more or less average "average ratings" come from reviewers who either rate this one star or four to five stars. In my opinion this illustrates the main point of the book, i.e. that people either evaluate things based on medical evidence, on the opinion of experts, or on their personal belief based on personal life experience/expectations. The different ways of evaluation produce conflicting perceptions, conflicting world views which we see played out many aspect of life. I think that Dr. Angell is gutsy to even take on an issue which generates tremendous controversy. I believe that she presents the arguments for medical evidence very well. Chapter 5 is the best brief and understandable description of what medical evidence is (and is not) that I have ever read. I recommend the book on that alone. I hope that some day Dr. Angell will update the book to include more recent research.
Biases Aplenty.......1999-12-16
For the true story behind implants, one's time is better spent reading John Byrne's "Informed Consent". He was in charge of Dow's "ethics" program and his wife also had implants. Contrary to what Dr. Angell writes in her book, there are many studies showing immunological responses to silicone oils (most recently a study by researchers at the FDA - June 1999). The Institute of Medicine in their recent report termed the FDA study "interesting", choosing to rely on previous, and seriously flawed, studies purporting to show no link between silicone and disease (the same studies quoted in Dr. Angell's book). One of the studies looked at women who had implants for only one month (!), which is as ludicrous as determing smoking doesn't cause cancer after studying a person who smoked for only a brief time. There are thousands of court documents proving fraud on the part of the implant manufacturers. Reading through them makes one realize how powerful corporations are and how the bottom line is far more important than the health and safety of the consumer. Breast implants (saline and silicone) have NEVER been approved for safety by the FDA. They only have pre-market approval, which means they can be on the market pending the manufacturers submission of safety data. To date, the manufacturers have been UNABLE to prove implants safe. Unfortunately, the medical community and the corporate community are oftentimes inextricably intertwined. Money is the motivator. When Dr. Angell speaks of greed, I'm sure that's at least one thing she knows a lot about.
Finally, a rational argument!.......1999-06-03
People have a tendency to let their emotions rule their mind, or in this case, their breasts. Luckily, this book chooses the mind.
a paid expert for dow corning-biased.......1999-04-18
this woman is a front for the plastic surgeons and the chemical cos. who are responsible for the largest cover-up of facts in the history of plastic surgery--the media pr and the cruel slap at sick women and children is disgusting--she also came out against agent orange problems (also a DOW product--if the public ever gets the real story in this silicone disaster it wont be thru drs and health persons like her--she is so tainted by dow et/al money that this book reeks --its smells of corporate cover-up and misinformation--GET THE FACTS ON THIS WOMAN AND HER BACKERS!

Book Description
Hippos are unusual in being genuinely amphibious and this has a fundamental effect on their physiology and way of life. Following a general introduction, there is a detailed description of hippo anatomy and physiology, including many fascinating and little known facts about their skin structure and physiology. The complex question of hippo stomach anatomy, and its impact on their diet and nutrition, is critically reviewed. Hippos have a four-chambered stomach similar to ruminants although, unlike them, they do not chew the cud. Hence they are often called "pseudoruminants." The fossil history of hippos is then considered and the recently claimed relationship with whales is examined. Subsequent chapters are devoted to their social biology and ecology, including descriptions of their breeding and feeding ecology. Several extraordinary instances of carnivory, including an instance of cannibalism, are described. A chapter on diseases and parasites also discusses the relations between hippos and other species, including crocodiles, to which they appear to be dominant. A consideration of the hippo's relationships with its human neighbors and the prospects for its long-term conservation gives an important view of current conservation concerns. The book closes with three chapters devoted to the results of the author's recent survey on the distribution and abundance of the common hippo throughout Africa. This is the first such estimate to have been made on a continent-wide basis and the total population of about 170,000 was so much smaller than many people had expected, that it resulted in the common hippo being given special protection under the CITES convention.
