Book Description
Starting in 1902 at a country school that had an enrollment of fourteen, Frank Boyden built an academy that has long since taken its place on a level with Andover and Exeter. Boyden, who died in 1972, was the school’s headmaster for sixty-six years. John McPhee portrays a remarkable man “at the near end of a skein of magnanimous despots who...created enduring schools through their own individual energies, maintained them under their own absolute rule, and left them forever imprinted with their own personalities.” More than simply a portrait of the Headmaster of Deerfield Academy, it is a revealing look at the nature of private school education in America.

The Beginning Of A Saga.......2006-08-05
John McPhee's second work is part of a dynasty that currently stands at twenty-seven works of uncannily good non-fiction. Rarely in the annals of modern literature has such a feat been approached. Stephen Jay Gould's record-breaking essay streak is the only comparable feat of what Richard Rhodes aptly terms "verity". The so-called non-fiction novel was invented during the 60's with Truman Capote's brilliant "In Cold Blood", but the book devoured Capote, leaving John McPhee with a twenty-six book lead and a magnum opus entitled "Annals Of The Former World."
"The Headmaster" is a 1966 profile of a remarkable educator called Frank Boyden and follows McPhee's first work "A Sense Of Where You Are" (1965), a prescient college-basketball biography of Bill Bradley who went on to have a successful pro-basketball and political career. McPhee's third work "Oranges" is the next book in the series. Not only does each and every John McPhee book receive 5 stars over four decades; the majority of McPhee's work is actually about the state of New Jersey, where he resides.
A Special Person...a Special Place.......2005-07-01
I read this book when it was first published in 1966. Not long afterward, I had the privilege as well as pleasure of visiting Deerfield Academy and was given a tour of it by its headmaster, Frank Boyden. At that time, I was a Master of English at Kent School (Kent, CT). I recently re-read this book and another of John McPhee's, A Sense of Where You Are. The title of the latter work correctly describes Boyden's total understanding of his relationship with a once tiny school (founded in 1797) located in what remains a rustic village. Throughout his years as headmaster (1902-1968), he knew exactly where he was as well as where exactly he wanted Deerfield to be (and remain) under his leadership. Just as Mr. Boyden gave me a tour of Deerfield Academy during my visit so many years ago, McPhee enables his reader to take a comprehensive "tour" of the unique and compelling relationship between a remarkable educator and the school community he headed for 66 years.
Of special interest to me is what McPhee reveals about Boyden's style of leadership (autocratic but compassionate) and his obsession with maintaining "proper" appearances (e.g. manicured grounds, only the very best athletic equipment, the most impressive-looking athletes first off the bus). With regard to his relationships with faculty members, "The more you cooperate with the headmaster, the more he imposes on you," according to a teacher who had been at Deerfield for 25 years. "He expects a fantastic commitment. If you give it, he expects more. If you don't give it, he carries you, but you don't exist."
As a father of four and a grandfather of seven, I also found many valuable lessons to be learned from Boyden's relationships with Deerfield's students. For example, his emphasis on courtesy in athletics. "No matter how able a Deerfield player was or how close a game had become, if he showed anger he was benched." For Boyden, athletic competition must demonstrate "a moral force." He played on Deerfield teams until he was about 35, and was head coach of football, basketball, and baseball until he was nearly 80. He loved sports. He often observed that "it's better to lose in a sportsmanlike way than to win and gloat over it." Point made, he would then add, "Now, boys, let's not let up on [the given opponent] for a minute. Let's win this one, if possible, by forty points." Frank Boyden had a sense of where he was as well as of where everyone else associated with Deerfield Academy should always be. The values to which he dedicated his life often require personal sacrifices which -- apparently -- many parents, educators, and young people today are unwilling and/or unable to make.
A good book.......2004-06-20
Being business-oriented, I wish this book had talked more about how he had built up this school and ran it. It does do that but not to the level where this could be considered a business biography. From a business standpoint, this is a book about leadership and how great leadership can do great things for an institution.
Oh, and the drawings spread throughout the book really help convey the man. There's a number of photographs as well, but the drawings add nice touch.
If this man was really as good as the book portrays him, this won't be the last book about him and, if so, I look forward to reading those as well.
While not a great book, I would recommend it. It is a thin book of nice light reading.
Insightful into Deerfield's school culture.......2003-01-20
McPhee has written a highly readable account of the impact of a single individual on one of New England's important boarding schools. This work is particularly interesting when juxtaposed against similar works on the history of Groton School, St. Paul's School, or Exeter/Andover when viewing how one person can cause an entire school culture to take root. Found most often in schools where strong headmasters have either founded the school or contributed a life of service, Deerfield Academy comes across in McPhee's work as the true child of Boyden whose various quirks in no way detracted from his personal mission of making a difference in boys' lives. While by no means a critical work, "Headmaster" is nevertheless an important document in understanding the history of an important boarding school.
A Teacher for the generations.......2002-01-09
From 1902 to 1968, Frank Boyden was the Headmaster of Deerfield, a private boy's school in the countryside of Massachusetts. When Boyden arrived, the school had 14 students, transportation was by foot or horse drawn wagon, and he intended to stay only long enough to get enough money. 66 years later, Deerfield was one of the leading prep schools in America, the equal to Exeter and Andover. Best of all, the school wasn't an imitation of British schools, as so many prep schools of the first half of the 20th century were. Boyden had turned Deerfield into an outstanding educational institution while keeping it uniquely American. Demanding, even a bit of a despot, Boyden shaped the school and its students into something special, a school where the students come first, then the faculty.
Only John McPhee could tell the story as it deserves. Boyden and all the other residents of Deerfield come alive under McPhee's pen. The little touches, like the Headmaster's rejuvenating midday naps, followed by letter writing and inspections tours, make it seem as if the reader is there.
I doubt you'll be able to read this book, and not wish you could have been a student under Boyden. For several generations, Deerfield under his leadership was what a school should be.

Real world experience. Better than fiction........2002-09-11
This is a great account of the Gulf War. The most fought part of the ground war, yet the least covered. Everyone hears about 73 easting (2ACR) and the 7th Cav debacle with 1 Cavalry Division, but this unit (1AD) fought the largest tank battle since World War II without combat losses. Yes I was there.
iron soldiers.......2002-01-12
was with 6-6 inf. as a brad. commander in c. co. found the book very accurate, right down to the detail of the falling out between iron mike and col. meigs who is now the cinc in usaeur. very good book and very accurate as to the battles we fought.
Not bad.......2000-09-07
While I was looking for a story on ground combat during the Gulf War, I was a bit dissapointed to see much of the book spent on the preparations in Germany before the division shipped out. Not a bad book, but not what I was looking for.
Iron Soldiers is hard hitting, very true with accurate facts.......1999-01-19
Iron soldiers is intersting reading that tells the true story of the First Armored Division in combat with Iraq's Republican Guards. Tom Carhart writes as if he was there during the combat misssions. He has exact information and details that describe many personal events about the prepration, deployment, and battles. He highlights and explains the fear and concerns of some of the leaders as they prepare to leave Germany. I almost relive the Gulf War when I read Iron Soldiers. I was a First Sergeant with the Alpha Company 54th Engineer Bn at Wildflecken Germany and my company was attached to the 2nd Brigade 1AD during the Gulf war. Any soldier who was in the ground war should read this book. I believe that they will relate to it and get satisfaction in knowing that we did our job well. First Sergeant William E. Miller (Retired)
Informative, especially for the novice.......1998-08-01
Considering the price, this book is a great buy that provides a good overview of life in a tank battalion. Tactics, training and armaments are well covered, though there is too much time spent on the familes back home. Some of the stories may be embellished, but they are accurate enough for the average reader.

Customer Reviews:
A Unique Insight Into A Shadowy World.......2007-01-27
I've long acknowledged the Mossad as one of the best, if not the best, intelligence agencies in the world. They have a reputation as being both ruthless and resourceful. Even more unusual is that they have achieved this status with a relatively small organization, compared with, say, the CIA. Ostrovsky explains how this is possible, and details the recruitment and training of prospective agents at great length.
The most disturbing element of the book is the way it conveys the omnipresent yet totally autonomous organization that is the Mossad. Highlighted in this book is the way in which the Mossad operates primarily for its own goals and agendas, and not necessarily in Israel's best interests. Indeed, some of its actions have run against that of Israel's interests, including the jeopardization of the peace process. While many might say he wrote this with Claire Hoy purely for financial gain, I'm convinced that Victor did it out of concern for what he was seeing. It's like that old saying goes "absolute power corrupts absolutely".
In truth, I'm not a great fan of non-fiction, but I made an exception for this book based on the subject matter, and was not disappointed. I would recommend this book.
Very Exciting.......2007-01-04
If you have ever wondered about the Mossad and how they came about this will answer all your questions. A really good book.
Some good spy stories amidst a lot of complaining.......2006-06-23
If this was a collection of short stories it would be great. The disgruntled angle detracts from the stories, and is unsatisfying on its own merits.
First, the good. I won't spoil the stories by repeating them. I'll just say that they are satisfying, and intriguing. Some of the stories have been duplicated -- e.g. in Spy Games -- but the author goes through them in much greater detail here.
Now, the bad. The complaints sound more like whining, and the allegations sound conspiratorial. That Israel has banned this book makes it sexier, but on its merits, it is difficult to believe the parochialism, narrow-mindedness, and short-sightedness that the author extrapolates from a few select (questionable) incidents. E.g. the Israelis keeping their mouths shut about the Beirut bombings. I'm only surprised there wasn't more discussing of the Liberty Incident.
As long as you don't expect the wrong things, this book is a good read.
One sided view........2006-05-31
As expected, anything coming from Victor Ostrovsky will be negative and against Israel. The book is filled with real events, which the author dramatically changed and turned Israel responsible for them. No wonder this book is banned in Israel. In fact, because of the ban, many people believe that this book has true accounts of Mossad activities. True, the book gets interesting, but the author's motive to run down the Israel for everything happening around the world spoils it. This book is a perfect example of blaming a country and its intelligence agency for your own mistakes. I absolutely agree with J. A Magill's review, this book has no credible source of information, except the fact that Ostrovsky once worked for Mossad.
Vindictiveness is the word behind this book. Absolutely one sided, and nothing to prove what author says. All I can say is that I want my money and most importantly my time back. I doubt if I can have either.
Highly recommended.......2006-05-08
This book is best read along with its followup, The Other Side of Deception. The author is/was a true patriot who was honored to serve his country. He reveals many thrilling tales of derring-do, the grinding routine of spycraft and his shock and disillusionment with the personal corruption and immorality of many fellow agents.
According to the author, the Mossad nominally answers only to the Prime Minister but often acts on its own agenda and in many cases against the interests of Israel and any prospects for peace. The assassination arm conducts killings authorized by secret Star Chamber-like hearings. Illegal arms sales to unsavory regimes fund operations. A tiny staff conducts worldwide operations with the assistance of local Jews. He refers to staff by their first names only which made it amusing when "Ephraim" wrote his own book, reviewed and panned by Ostrovsky.

THE BEST KEPT SECRET THAT NEEDS TO BE TOLD!.......2007-04-11
It's been three weeks since I met Mr. Grace in a raw food cafe in NYC. His energy was undeniable, and his smile was contagious. I knew he was on to something when I listened to him talk about simple solutions to health. I picked up his book and read it quickly, all while gradually shifting to an all raw diet. It's been two weeks since I've been 100% raw, and I feel like I've won the lottery. My energy is through the roof. I feel euphoric. I've lost 10 pounds. I wake up before my alarm. I have no cravings. I have complete control of my appetite for the first time in my life. Before going raw, I was feeling down about career path and life choices--now I feel consistently positive, centered and focused about what I want, and how I am going to go after it.
Mr. Grace's views needs to reach everyone. I will share this with everyone I care about, and how drastically it has changed my life in such a short amount of time. It doesn't have to be hard, people! We are the only ones that make it hard for ourselves. Live the way nature intended, and you will feel happier and more energetic, you will be in control of your body and emotions, and you'll never worry about disease again.
Don't go through life only feeling mediocre. Your life DOES NOT HAVE TO END in cancer, diabetes, obesity, fatigue, daily meds, heart attacks etc etc etc....choose to live the life you deserve! What do you have to lose? It is never too late to get healthy! Let the body heal itself without the toxins of the standard American diet getting in the way. Try this for one month of your life, and I guarantee you will feel the best you've ever felt. You will feel blessed to have been open to something so simple and so life-changing.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU MR. GRACE. I am the luckiest person to have met you that afternoon. You saved my life.
Inspiring.......2006-11-14
The first book I read in my journey towards raw. I found this to be much more helpful as an inspirational story of how a raw lifestyle can heal and allpw one to reach their optimal life. However, as a course of study it is more drastic than anything else I've read. However, it is understandable because his situation was extreme.
A Way Out is the way out!!!!.......2006-06-15
Matthew Grace has brought light into a world of darkness for anyone willing to follow his wisdom. I am grateful that he made it available for me in a time of need. It is a road map to read, study and absorb. YOU WILL benefit, I have. With much gratitude...thank you Matthew.
This Book Changed my Life.......2005-11-04
Remember when the entire world believed the world was flat? Well, get ready - this book finally exposes the terrible myths of the "healthy" modern diet and opens your eyes to the truth of what we are actually eating. The key to REAL health is explained - backed by simple endless facts - a superb jolt to the old system of disease-causing diet beliefs. After reading this book, I'd be shocked if anyone could joyfully grab another bacon cheesburger ever again! Seriously, read this book and decide for yourself!
And by the way - I used LOVE cheesburgers and I AM NEVER GOING BACK!!
The book changed the way I LIVE! .......2005-10-29
Vegan? Me? No way!! I could NEVER give up my cheese, yogurt, or a nice juicy medium-rare steak au poivre! TRUST me, after reading this book, this is over with. Another thing you gonna be done with is migraines, weird rashes, acne, strange discharge, fatigue, and medical bills. Well, I considered myself pretty healthy to begin with - turns out, I have been going half speed. All of the above, and more - GONE! Not only do I feel better, I have so much more energy, I don't need "the necessary eight hours" of sleep any more!! 5-6 will do it for me, and nope, I am not burning out! I get so much more done because my day is longer. My body doesn't need all this sleep that it used to require when I was eating all this crap we are all used to eating! Just like Matthew says, "You don't have to believe me, just try it out." You will feel the results in DAYS. I am so grateful, I can't express it. In fact, I now feel obligated to recommend this book to everybody I know and don't know, and I don't care if people think I am weird - if it changes the life of one out of ten of them, it has paid off. Why do you think you are reading all these headlines, "the healthcare costs have soared over the past decade, bla bla bla". This is not just because the population is getting older - it is also because it is getting sicker, and at a younger age. Genetically modified produce, sugar and sugar substitute overload, more soda varieties every day, the entire coffee culture, babies on formula - does it ring a bell??? PEOPLE, THIS BOOK IS A MUST in our society! If something brought you as far as reading this - you NEED it! p.s. Best part: I will be working on a translation of this book, because my parents need to read it - 1) I want them around for a loooong time, and, call it selfish, keeping their healthcare expenses to a minimum ;) 2) Folks in Germany need it, too!

Book Description
"White-collar criminals continue to pick our pockets to the tune of $300 billion every year. These 'socially acceptable' criminals rob more from companies and individuals with a pen or key stroke than a street thug can plunder with a high-powered pistol." —from the Introduction
In Masters of Deception, former special agent and intelligence officer Louis Mizell addresses the growing problem of white-collar crime in America. Using actual cases, Mizell exposes scores of perpetrators and their modus operandi, and offers invaluable advice on what to look for, how to avoid being a victim, and how to fight back.
Praise for Louis Mizell and Masters of Deception
"Mizell stands out as a true expert in crime and terrorism who earned his title fighting the bad guys in back alleys, courts, corporate suites, and the new global economy. No one else out there can match his knowledge of what the bad guys are doing and how." —James Grady, author of Six Days of the Condor and White Flame
"Masters of Deception exposes little known facts that should be revealed to the unsuspecting public. Mizell may well be the next Ralph Nader in exposing the many ways innocent people are victimized by white-collar crime." —Dr. Richard Ward, Associate Chancellor and Professor of Criminal Justice, University of Chicago at Illinois
White-collar crime is an alarming epidemic that has reached every big city and small town in America. Invading all sectors, from health care and religion to law and education, it claims millions of victims, and bilks taxpayers out of billions of dollars every year. In Masters of Deception, top crime expert Louis Mizell addresses this serious—and costly—problem, exposing some of the most notorious offenders, and providing precautionary measures everyone should take to avoid being "taken to the cleaners."
Leaving no get-rich-quick stone unturned, white-collar criminals strike from every angle. Whether they're doctors overbilling patients, charity workers pocketing donations, or lawyers abusing powers of attorney, their fraudulent practices cost individuals, companies, and institutions billions of dollars. Consider the following:
- Every year an average of $160 million is stolen or embezzled from schools and colleges all over the country
- Insurance fraud—property, casualty, and health—is a $95 billion-a-year scam
- Credit card fraud costs taxpayers nearly $3 billion per year
- Dishonest lawyers pocket more than $14 billion annually
- More than $21 billion is being stolen from charities each year
In Masters of Deception, Mizell explores the full spectrum of white-collar crime and the misuse of power by professionals we trust, including health care, business, education, and religion. He reveals hundreds of actual cases, from local crimes to such highly publicized incidents as the PTL scandal. With his experienced analytical eye, Mizell is able to spot new and emerging trends and pinpoint signs to look for in identifying potential cons. Sharing his expertise and insight as a former special agent and intelligence officer, Mizell also offers proven tips for fighting back—specific to each sector—as well as an extensive list of contacts for receiving further information, getting help, or reporting a crime.
And anyone who believes that white- collar crime is nonviolent will be shocked to learn that crime in the suites causes as much death and injury as crime in the streets.
Masters of Deception is a timely and authoritative book that will not only raise awareness about white-collar crime, but also allow readers "to empower themselves with enough knowledge to never be a victim."
Customer Reviews:
Masters of Deception Deceives the unwary buyer.......1998-03-13
This book is little more than a brief summary of newspaper clippings. The author (Louis Mizell) achieves the same ends as the crooks about whom he writes. The unfortunate person who purchases this book believing that it may contain useful information about white collar crime or solid strategies to combat white collar crime becomes a victim of the author's own deception.

Inside the Mossad.......2002-12-08
One of the most corrupt and dangerous organizations in the world today is the Mossad. "By Way of Deception" and "The Other Side of Deception" pretty well sums up the processes that are used to conduct warfare against Israel's enemies. One of the favored techniques is to attack some one, blame it on an enemy of Israel, then sit back and watch as the "innocent enemy" recieves their punishment.
Back in 1967, the USS Liberty was "mistakenly" attacked by Israeli jet fighters with rockets and cannon, bombers dropping explosives, PT boats firing five torpedos and machine gunning crewmen waving American flags and the life boats as they were lowered into the water. If there had been no survivors, the attack could have been blamed on the Egyptians, who the US public would have wanted punished. Our good ally, the Israeli goverment would have been on our side as we killed Egyptians for them. Please also read "Assault on the Liberty" and see how far the cover-up went.
As an added concern, the only country to benefit from the 9/11 World Trade Center attack was Israel. After the Muslims crashed the airplanes into the towers, Americans no longer cared about the slaughter of Palestinian people by Israel. I sometimes wonder if the Israeli Mossad was involved in the planning of the WTC attack. Reading this book only adds to my concern.

Customer Reviews:
Packed full of information.......2001-11-14
I have been told this is the leading book on wildland watershed management. I do have a complaint though, I believe with a little creative thought any book can be made to be interesting or atleast bearable. This book tends toward the extreme side of dry. It does have the information needed, but the graphs are very dull, nothing here to break the tedium of this book. For the cost of this book (...) there should be colored graphs, if for know other reason than to stop the strain on the eyes, bigger font, to help with not falling asleep and if you HAVE to read it like I did. ANYTHING would have helped.
But like I said it had the information you need, just not in a good format.
