Book Description

Kathie Klarreich, a white Jewish girl from the West Coast, arrived in Haiti as a naïve twenty-something in the late 1980s. There she worked for a fair trade organization. Weeks became months, and months became years, as Klarreich, despite the spiraling political violence, became enthralled by the island, its lifestyle and traditions, to the extent that she started to grow dreads, attend Voodoo masses and started to file reports for the Christian Science Monitor and its attendant radio station.

Klarreich saw civil violence, mass slaughter, coups, and U.S. intervention all up-close, and on a daily basis as a reporter. Often risking life and limb, accused of being a CIA agent by her enemies, she lost a man she loved due to an assassin's bullet—but she established credentials, contacts and developed an unsparing eye that led major news organizations such as The New York Times, ABC, CNN, Fresh Air and Time magazine to regard her as nonpareil throughout the turbulent decade.

This compelling memoir interweaves shattering political events with an intensely personal narrative about the Haitian musician Klarreich eventually marries (and has a child with), who turns out to be as enthralling and complicated as the political events she covered.

Haven't had a chance to read yet but have interest in anything about Haiti and Vodou.

1 out of 5 stars Did not enjoy it.......2006-07-13

After reading many of her articles which used poor fact checking and overt reliance on elites - I felt this book was boring even though it was not as overtly bias in its politics as her newspaper writing.

3 out of 5 stars Good memoir, little depth.......2006-03-19

I read this book hoping to better understand the constant strife in Haiti. I didn't get the understanding I was looking for. The litany of changing leaders is given, but no real examination of why each one fails is provided. For example, Aristide wins the election and then does not follow up by doing anything to improve conditions. He eventually is driven from power, but no details about his lack of action are provided in this book. A good read, but not what I was hoping for.

5 out of 5 stars madame dread.......2006-03-13

i LOVED it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't put the book down!!!!I could visualize each word she wrote!! I have a whole new perspective on Haiti!! Not only did I learn so much about the life, culture, and politics in this country, but about a women's personal journey in a place so foreign to her. Leaving the comforts and safety of the US behind to learn about and try to make a difference in Haiti speaks volumes about this woman!!! And then to face the struggle of what is best for her son, even if her personal choice was not to leave Haiti. This is a great read...i hope to see more from this author!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very colorful book!.......2006-02-17

A nice panorama of one woman's experiences in Haiti over two decades.

5 out of 5 stars Kagan's Inexhaustible Guide to the Peloponnesian War.......2006-11-14

The Peloponnesian War, along with the myriad feuds that latched on to the central conflict between Sparta and Athens in the latter half of the fifth century BCE, can be an exhausting subject. The civil and international politics involved in fostering and perpetuating the war rival even today's most complex conflicts.

In this, the second of four volumes on the subject, Kagan skillfully presents, comments on, and refutes the hypotheses presented by history and historians, while still managing a very approachable narrative. These books come in and out of circulation, so best to get ahold of them while they're available. Again, Kagan's work is superb

For the historian, or avid history buff (however you might self-identify), these works are a necessary addition to your library. The more casual reader might, however, consider purchasing Kagan's abridged work entitled simply "The Peloponnesian War." It includes the main thrust of the narrative, but with markedly less analysis of the political motivations included in these volumes.

4 out of 5 stars very in depth, but..........2003-08-05

there are a lot of typos in this book, such as grammar and spelling (and this is ignoring kagan's (often) refusal of setting off clauses with comas, which is very annoying and at times makes reading more difficult than it should be). considering that it is a reprint, one would expect the typos to be corrected.

so, it is given four stars on this account, which has as much do to the editors (or maybe more) than with kagan himself. his work is very elucidating and his arguments seem to me to be compelling (although i am far from well read in criticism on thucydides, in fact, this is my first).

highly recommended, but one should have a background on the war and greek history before beginning and at least some familiarity with thucydides and some of aristophanes' work.

5 out of 5 stars War and Peace, 5th Century B.C........2002-08-04

This is perhaps the most important of Kagan's four books, because it contains the central plank of his thesis. Even though the Archidamian War closed with a tactical victory for the Athenians, as Kagan shows, the war (the opening conflict in the thirty year Pelopponesian wars) left the city-state economically crushed and strategically vulnerable. In this respect, the thesis in this book reminds me of Tolstoy's thesis in War and Peace concerning the Battle of Borodino. Tolstoy had argued that the outcome of this conflict (a nominal win for Napoleon) was in fact a strategic catastrophe for the French. Similarly, Pericles, for all his brilliance, fixed upon a strategy throughout this war which bled Athens white and left it utterly unprepared for another long-term struggle. A powerful history indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great History.......2001-01-02

I agree with Mr. Lafianza's review except for his criticism. At first the analysis may be annoying, but one should quickly see its benefits. By looking at several different explanations and pointing out their failings, Kagan reiterates his main themes, strengthens his own point, underlines the importance of certain events, and makes understanding these events clearer for the layman by slowly moving through the events and never going so fast that a given situation does not make sense.

The book is wonderful and if the subject interests you, there is none better.

4 out of 5 stars The Relevance of Greek History.......2000-08-20

By the rank, subject, and age of this book, I doubt many, if anyone, will read this review. Thus, if you are reading these words, you are probably one of the few who already enjoys reading about ancient history and are just trying to decide which book in this area you will read next. If this is you, read this book.

Personally I knew some things, but not much about this war. Kagan discusses, in detail, the views of three of four historians on the causes and origins of the war, how the war could of been avoided, and how it was fought. What is maddening is that he often repeats what two or three people say, and then tells you why they are are wrong.

If you are not familiar with the war, this approach can be confusing. However, if you have time or already familiar with the "Archidamian War", this book is very satisfying. After reading this book, you will have a clearer understanding about the war and the people who fought it.

Personally, I am a political junkie. I found myself so fascinated with the stunning details about the passions and politics of these people that they seemed as clear and as relevent to me as any story in the news today.

This is Kagan's gift. With marvelous use of analogies plucked from every time and corner of history, he shows how Thuclyides was right, events repeat themselves. The form is always a little different, but often almost the same as some past drama. This 2500 years old war is relevent today, not just for drama or historians, but for both moderen politicians and military stratigists. If we choose to listen.

My only concern for this book is that, with the gaps in the records, much of Kagan work is as much fiction as history. He tells us what he believes to be the most probable reasons why this event occured or why something else happened. But, in the end, those are only educated deductions from the record, not what actually happened. Kagan, in particular, sees man as more rational creature then, in my view, he actually is. Men and women often do things for no reasons or, for very bad ones. Kagan assumes city-states were more rational then men, when a city-state is just a collection of men. Men who are very irrational at times.

Still, this is a small criticism. The book is great. Read it and remember, it is easier to learn from other's mistakes then to make them yourself. Thank you Mr. Kagan.

5 out of 5 stars Outbreak of the Peloponesian War.......2002-05-06

This book is the first in a series of four covering the massive confrontation that destroyed the greek world. The subject matter is Thucydides Peloponesian War which Kagan manages to give many new insights into. With his thourough analysis he looks at the archealogical evidence as well as the literature in a way that gives pause to those judging Thucydides to be the first "unbiased" historian. Thucydides used the facts for his own purposes and left out important details about the epic conflict that would leave a blemish on his side of the story.
In the series Kagan wonders at some of the details of the Peloponesian War that remain unexplained, for example, how Pericles expected Sparta to wear itself out invading the Attic country side.
Some of these questions leave inexplicable holes in Thucydides narrative.
Overall an excellent comapnion to the Peloponesian War that throws a critical light on all that is said in that tomb.

          1 out of 5 stars Idiotic.......2007-03-10

Terrible writing and terrible plot. I guess if you are a right-wing vigilante you may enjoy this book, but failing that stay as far away from this book as possible.

3 out of 5 stars the case for vigilantes and a blueprint.......2006-10-02

A man who broke into Tom and Judy's house and raped her is released from prison by a judge due to "overcrowding", overcrowding being regarded as cruel and unusual punishment. The governor blames the legislature for not appropriating funds for more prisons. The legislature blames the governor for refusing to raise taxes to pay for the prisons. The judge had imposed the minimum sentence even though the criminal had been out on parole for another rape conviction.

"But I never needed a gun before. . . . No, you did need one. You just didn't realize it." "The time to buy a gun is before you need it." (p. 13)

The new police chief never issues gun permits. "His college professors stuffed his head full of nonsense about . . . how we got to be nice to [the criminals] cause it really our fault." (p. 19-20) (If you wonder why all the college professors' heads are stuffed with nonsense these days and what happened to the sensible, scholarly ones, read The Rape of Alma Mater, another book "they" hope you'll never read.)

If you shoot your assailant in self-defense, "the cops' job is to assume that you committed a crime. . . . You'll end up telling [your story] to the prosecutor." ( p. 38) If [the bad guy] isn't dead, things could be even worse. . . . You might end up in civil court. The bad guy's lawyer will point at you, in perfect health and . . . tell the jury you used excessive force." ... "You may have to deal with the press. . . . They don't own guns, they don't like guns, and they don't like gun-owners. . . . They'll twist anything you say." (p. 39)

The story is fairly good, but the writing is atrocious. I never expected to see writing this amateurish in print. If Martino intends to do another book, he should either learn how to write fiction or hire a ghost.

Still, Martino has hit squarely at a serious problem in our society. This problem has implications for other serious problems which we all know we are facing. To get the whole story in one book, read While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within.

5 out of 5 stars Feels 'REAL'!! .......2005-08-23

This is not a thick novel with a convoluted plot. It is a moderately small book with a straight-forward, exciting, & gut-wrenching story. You quickly understand & identify with the central characters and emotionally accompany them on their journey. The character-development is outstanding, as is the sharing of their evolving thinking. It is well-written, with a storyline based on current situations & common fears: attacks, stalking, defense, wrong-track government, etc. Unlike the great majority of books, even it's 'action' has a realistic feel. This is a book that will be recommended & passed to friends & family, followed by discussions. I think the only slight flaw in the book is too nit-picky to mention.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Second Amendment Novel!.......2004-05-02

I'm happy to see that the Second Amendment seems to be forging its own niche as a unique genre. The first and most well-known is "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross, written in 1996. At 861 pages, UC is quite a hefty read, but it has developed a strong cult following because of its excellence. My own 2003 novel "Enemies Foreign and Domestic" is no featherweight either at 568 pages. Now we have the newest novel in the genre, "The Justice Cooperative" by Joe Martino. At 292 pages, is by far the most accessible of the three.

"The Justice Cooperative" covers the nightmarish problem of one young married couple in a town in America. A few years earlier, they had been the victims of a home invasion by a violent criminal predator. The husband was knocked almost unconscious in the surprise attack, and his pretty wife was raped in front of him after he was tied up. The criminal was later arrested, and based on their testimony he was put in prison for an all-too-short plea-bargained sentence.

As the novel opens, the governor of the state is commuting the sentences of all prisoners who have served more than one half of their time, due to prison overcrowding. Their tormenter is freed, and begins a crafty stalking campaign, threatening to repay them for their court testimony.

The police are unwilling or unable to help the couple, because the freed criminal hasn't committed an actionable offense...yet.

In desperation, the couple purchases a pair of handguns, and takes instructional courses to learn to shoot them effectively. During this instruction, they come to realize the crucial importance of the right to keep and bear arms spelled out (not "granted") in the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights. They learn how the law is effectively stacked against the innocent citizen, in favor of criminals. (The reader will also get a tremendous education in self-defense theory, practice and law simply by reading this book.)

The "Justice Cooperative" of the title refers to a shadowy group which works to provide terminal justice to dangerous criminals the police can't-or won't-deal with, before they rape or kill even more victims. With an anonymous note, the faceless and nameless cooperative contacts the couple at a shooting range, where they have mentioned their struggle to defend themselves. The husband agrees to help the cooperative to target other violent felons, in return for later help with his own stalker. I don't want to say anything more about the plot, but I will say that "The Justice Cooperative" raises some very intriguing ideas for a covert form of vigilantism.

Along the way, "The Justice Cooperative" makes a powerful case for the continuing importance of the Second Amendment in today's society. I highly recommend this book to anyone who owns a gun for self-defense, or who has ever considered owning a gun. Because it's much shorter than "Unintended Consequences" or "Enemies Foreign and Domestic," it may make a better initial "educational gift" for that liberal-leaning friend or relative who might be open-minded about guns for self-defense.

          Matthew Bracken
Author of "Enemies Foreign And Domestic" and "Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista"

5 out of 5 stars WHERE GUN LAWS MEET THE ROAD.......2004-03-31

The Congress just extended the meaningless "Assault Weapon Ban" as everyone knew they would. Do you feel safer? In the real world, gun laws affect only those who obey laws. But what about lawbreakers?

The answer, of course, is that they ignore laws. So how do we defend ourselves from them once the politicians take our guns? This novel explores this problem in a forceful, believable way.

Better written than other attempts at the genre, this novel takes the problem down to one man doing what he must to defend his wife from another man who wants to hurt her. And the small scale of the book gives it its power.

Read it, and be prepared for the fire it will kindle in your belly.

From the supplier: An Indiana based risk retention group could see its surplus wiped out in two lawsuits in Mississippi. In one case, Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks is accused of furloughing a prisoner who raped and assaulted an 11 year old girl in Houston, TX. Losing that case, combined with a $500,000 case in Madison County, MI, could eat up most of American Justice Insurance Reciprocal's $1.6 million surplus.

                              Book Description

The San Francisco Bay Area abounds in natural beauty. Despite a burgeoning population of 6.7 million, the region is blessed with incomparable open space: vibrant hills, seashores, forests, wetlands, and the shimmering expanse of San Francisco Bay. This legacy thrives, in most cases, not because benevolent governments have provided for it, but because certain stubborn citizens felt called upon to work for its preservation, often against great odds.
Legacy celebrates fifty of these extraordinary individuals with inspiring profiles by acclaimed Bay Area writer John Hart and superb duotone portraits by local photographer Nancy Kittle. The book offers glimpses into the lives of a generation of environmental leaders--including David Brower, Ike Livermore, Margaret Owings, and Edgar and Peggy Wayburn--who were born before World War II and who had made their commitment to the conservation cause well before the first Earth Day in 1970. From stopping Bay fill to blocking the construction of freeways through Golden Gate Park to the creation of Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, these elders' environmental activism has been a model for the world.
Activists, educators, funders, and writers--volunteers in the service of conservation long before and well beyond their retirement--this diverse group teaches by example. Legacy reveals why and how each elder became passionate in the cause of conservation and offers lessons for us all in shaping our environmental future.
