Book Description
Remedial, illiterate, intellectually deficientÂthese are the stigmas that define AmericaÂ's educationally underprepared. Having grown up poor and been labeled this way, nationally acclaimed educator and author Mike Rose takes us into classrooms and communities to reveal what really lies behind the labels and test scores. With rich detail, Rose demonstrates innovative methods to initiate Âproblem students into the world of language, literature, and written expression. This book challenges educators, policymakers, and parents to re-examine their assumptions about the capacities of a wide range of students. Already a classic, Lives on the Boundary offers a truly democratic vision, one that should be heeded by anyone concerned with AmericaÂ's future.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent personal account.......2007-07-15
Mike Rose grew up under-educated and placed in a tracking system in his school that almost doomed him to a live of unfulfillment. Only because he was able to be de-tracked and helped by a caring teacher, did he escape the vocational dead-end he was headed for. This is a powerful book about moving beyond what educational bureaucracy has in store for many of our poor children, who, because of their poverty or life circumstances are pre-judged not to be worth educating. I suggest the reader also read Frank McCourt's biography of his life as a teacher, "Teacher man." McCourt taught in NYC vocational schools for 30 years and the two books compliment each other in perspective.
An English Teacher's Guide to Struggling Students.......2006-09-08
This book is a great help to all teachers who want to put themselves in the minds of their struggling students. Mike Rose brings his experience as an academic outsider to explain how poor students can feel daunted and threatened by academic requirements when they do not have a caring teacher to help bridge the academic gap. He takes the reader through his experience as an underachieving inner city student to his academic successes at the highest levels of the university. His journey through education takes up much of the book's pages. However, the main theme is that it takes special teachers to bring our kids out of academic poverty. Teachers need to form personal ties with their students, especially struggling kids to ensure that they get the necessary help.
Current and future English teachers will be interested in his descriptions of how current methods of teaching English can frustrate the academic success of students. Rose's years of experience lend credence to the idea that we need to begin rethinking our methodologies. This book is written from a social reconstructivist's point of view.
Mostly, I enjoyed his vignettes about the different personalities of his students and how he approached their learning difficulties with the belief that they could achieve success if they were given a chance. He shows us that if taken seriously, underprepared students respond positively to instruction. I would recommend this book to all future and current teachers who want to see how a personal touch from a teacher can make the difference in the life of a student. The book is a quick read that offers invaluable understanding.
Lives on te boundary...............2005-12-20
Mike Rose writes about the trials and tribulations of growing up through the public school system. From his own experiences to the touching experiences of his students from elementary school to the war veterans at the VA Center. His stories are engaging and powerful. If you are a new teacher or even a veteran to the field there is something worthwhile in this book for everyone. It is an easy read and good for students too. Most of us who have been through the public school system with the same troubles and politics Mike Rose talks about can appreciate this book. For those that are oblivious to the shape of our school system this is a good start to understanding what an average kid has to do to make it. "I just want to be average."
Lives on the Boundary.......2005-04-05
I really did not enjoy this book. I also didn't learn anything from it I didn't already know. The author Mike Rose describes his experiences as a teacher and challenges in education with the diversity of students. I think it's quite clear to even the non-educator; the diversity in learners and other problems that are out there in education.
The first chapter in Lives on the Boundary is enough rough reading for some one to put down the book and not go any further. Even though the book does get a little easier to read after the first chapter the book still seems to drag on. There are endless pages of character after character and more characters. I think he could have gotten his point across in just a few pages.
What kind of grammar book starts out "Here name is Laura, and she was born in the poor section of Tijuana, the Mexican border city directly south of San Diego. Her father was a Mexican food vendor, and her memories of him and his chipped white cart come back to her in essay recollection: the odor of frying meat, the feel of tortillas damp with grease..." p1. I t sounds more like it should be a documentary instead. My suggestion to you is if you are looking for a good book to put you to sleep this is what you are looking for.
Lives On The Boundary.......2004-12-09
After reading "Lives On The Boundary", by Mike Rose, I felt the book was similar to John Holts "How Children Fail", They both discuss the school experiences of students, and strategies that can be used to make teaching better. This book didn't teach me anything i didn't already know. I feel it was an ok book, but it was a little confusing due to so many different characters in the story. Overall, I would say this book should be recommended for teachers even thought it's confusing in some parts. There is a lot of good information that would help teachers out so if I had to rate this I would give it three stars.
Book Description
By 2005, Latinas will be the largest female minority group in the United States. Numbering over 25 million, one out of every five women in America will be Latina. Unfortunately, this is also the group with the least personal, political, and economic power. They have great untapped talent and strength, but because the vast majority of Latinas, regardless of age, have been taught that their cultural traditions are sacrosanct and should not be questioned, most are not aware of how these very traditions limit them in so many aspects of their lives.
Empowering Latinas is written to help these millions of women realize their full potential. It represents an alternative point of view, from a Latina peer who openly and honestly discusses issues such as shame and sexuality, mental health, and the idea of equality as a birthright. Illustrated by dramatic stories of tragedy and triumph by the author and other notable Latinas, Empowering Latinas tackles issues with the Catholic Church, Latino family culture and self-esteem that until now have not been forthrightly addressed. The substantive chapters include worksheets, questionnaires, and exercises designed to help readers recognize negative forces in their lives and methods of empowering themselves to overcome these forces. Affirmations, quotes, poems and anecdotes illustrate ideas, provide cultural references and examples, and lend familiarity to the reader. Interviews with a Latina therapist, a Latina congresswoman and a Catholic priest provide examples and observations from a professional perspective.

ESSENTIAL!.......2003-06-04
The author of this book is insightful, intelligent, and indeed, empowering. After reading this book I am able to see the struggle and appreciate the power that every Latina woman experiences. I have used this book for teaching and in psychotherapy...my students and patients loved it! Personally, I, too, found this book to be inspiring and empowering. Did I forget to tell you that I am a Latino male? Men and womnen, you need to read this book for your good and for the good of your families! If you read this book, I promise that you won't regret it.
THIS BOOK HAS CHANGED MY LIFE!.......2002-06-10
First and foremost thank God this books exists. I am a 28 year-old Latina who has constantly given up everything to make everyone else happy. I never realized that I had the power to stand up for myself until I read this book. Empowering Latinas is my bible, and it goes with me everywhere. I thank Yasmin for writing this book and teaching me how to reclaim my personal power. Most of all, I am proud to know that my five year old daughter will not have to wait until she is 28 (like me) to find her own voice and strength; I will help her find it now.
Latina Queen of My Life.......2002-06-07
First of all, let me start by saying thank you Yasmin! Thank you for saying the things that most of us Latinas know in our subconscience, but are afraid to express it freely through our hearts and minds. I am a professional 32-year-old Latina whom believed that I was already empowered. Well, let me tell all of you 'Latina Queens' out there, you haven't been truly empowered until you read this book. I wish more women would step up the plate like Yasmin. I've bought five copies of this book to give to my mom, sisters and girlfriends. "Empowering Latinas" lies on a table next to my bedside..it is my bible now.
Excelent work!.......2002-04-10
I am a 16 year old Latina that just read Yasmin's first few pages of her book and fell in love with it. I could not let go, every page was full of amazing advise and encouraging words. I can really relate to Yasmin's life and pasion for life. Her book inspired me to become a more educated women and extremely proud of being and empowered Latina. In this book she talks about her struggle with drugs, violence, discrimination, and the dad that's a "Macho" who wants to control the household. She finally breaks through and wins so many battles through out her life. If you're a Latina that has pasion and ganas then read this book to motivate you even more.
Arriba mis Latinas!

Lives on the Boundary.......2000-04-28
Lives on the Boundary is a refreshing look at children lost in between schooling and curriculum where so many children still find themselves today. Mike Rose deliberately askes questions about teachers, school systems, and administrators who never truely teach but merely instruct. This is a wonderful book that provides inspiration for individuals that really want to make a difference in the lives of children.
Honest, and refreshing. I am not the only one who has strugg.......1999-03-25
This is such a refreshing and honest book on the underclass of America's students. Rose tells a great narrative of his own account of how he struggled and suffered through a world of education when in fact he had no idea what education was or meant. I read this and felt like" Hey I am not the only one who was once lost and confused about all this knowledge around me that I am so unprepared to learn and accept." A great read!

This is the text I used in my graduate studies at Arizona State University. It is an excellent book--very well orangized and easy to read. It was used for grad students as well as undergraduates. It provides a comprehensive overview for all the exceptionalities of students. Each chapter provides the following: historical overview, definition of the disability, characteristics, causes, incidence and prevalence, assessment, classroom adaptations and modifications, family perspectives, current issues and future trends. Each chapter ends with a five-minute summary and study questions. This is one of the better textbooks I have used in my studies.

daring but exciting science.......1999-02-19
Annalee says that mortality is only a choice, made because of a collective identification with something that's basically not necessary. She doesn't describe exactly how the aging process becomes reversed, except to indicate that belief in something good and positive produces like results. This is very powerful reading for young and free incarnates. It's the extrapowerful truth.

The Futility of Being a Civilian at time of War .......2005-12-13
"Window on a War" is the autobiography of anthropologist Gerald C. Hickey and his work in Vietnam, especially among the Montagnards, from 1956-1973. Hickey is probably the preminent world expert on the Montagnards, the peoples of the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
Hickey devotes most of the book to his impressions of Vietnam, its people, and what went wrong with the American war effort there. His advice on how to win "hearts and minds" among the Vietnamese farmers and Montagnards was mostly ignored. Would it have made a difference if he been heeded? Hard to say, but his observations ring true. One of the most startling assertions he makes is that the American government sought a military victory from the beginning of the conflict and blocked efforts of Vietnamese nationalists to reach a typical Vietnamese solution of accomodation. The assassination of President Ngo Dinh Diem in 1963, in Hickey's view, made continued civil war certain. Robert MacNamara wanted it that way, he asserts. Hickey, however, was no simple-minded war protester, but rather a patriot who observed more in sorrow than in anger the failure of the American effort to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam.
Hickey throws darts at a number of people in the course of the book, including iconic figures like Daniel Ellsberg and John Paul Vann. That keeps the book interesting. He writes eloquently about his own experiences under fire, especially the communist attack on the outpost at Nam Dong in 1964. This is as good a piece of war reporting as you will find anywhere.
Hickey briefly describes what has happened in Vietnam since his departure in 1973, especially the plight of the Montagnards. He also describes being ostracized by his alma mater, the University of Chicago, because he worked for the RAND Corporation, a Defense contractor, in Vietnam. This is a thoughtful and provocative book that should be read by all those who go to war or plan to go to war. Winning often has little to do with military victories.
Smallchief
Hickey doesn't tell all & doesn't explain why he remained.......2004-08-26
As one who lived through many of the scenes depicted here I grew tired of Gerald Hickey's slowness in supposedly coming late to realize that the CIA, Pentagon, Special Forces, White House and Rand wasn't going to use his informaiton for peace. All of us who were there knew this was the case, why didn't he? He was betrayed so many times early on in this book that it seems obvious that his research was never going to be used for peace, so it was instead used for war.
One of the best books I have ever read!.......2003-07-04
If you only read one book about the war in Vietnam, read this one! Dr. Hickey's participation in the defense of the Nam Dong Special Forces camp had me sitting on the edge of my chair. That was the true nature of combat in Vietnam, some of which I experienced personally, but not with that intensity. More important are Dr. Hickey's brilliant descriptions of the lifestyles and attitudes of the many cultures which comprise the intricate social and political structure of Vietnam. The many missed opportunities for a just peace without the sacrifice of so many American soldiers make this book a "must read" for all who value peace.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
This engaged, provocative reading of the ancient classic examines The Republic's philosophical meaning in the context of the text's dramatic, narrative, and mythical dimensions. The overall structure of the work is analyzed to offer insight into the key questions Plato presents about the human soul, human community, proper objects of worship and reverence, the nature of philosophy, and the relationship between the philosopher and the political community. Consideration of the connection of this work to other key writings including Homer's Odyssey and Socrates' teachings illustrates how Plato's dialogue reflects Greek tragedy's preoccupation with illuminating the paradoxical nature of philosophical quest.
Customer Reviews:
A straightforward discussion of Plato's classic text.......2005-01-04
Thoughtfully penned by a professor of philosophy at the University of Tulsa, The Republic: The Odyssey Of Philosophy is a straightforward discussion of Plato's classic text "Republic", which addresses matters ranging from the soul to human community, the nature of the philosopher himself vs. the community, and more. Meticulously dissecting the message and insights of Plato's conjecture, The Republic: The Odyssey Of Philosophy is especially meant for intermediate and advanced scholars of Greek classics, but does not presupposed any knowledge of the Greek language itself. An stimulating contribution to classical literature and philosophy shelves.
On the philosopher-poet Plato.......2003-12-04
Howland's reflections, insights, and challenging reading of Plato's REPUBLIC is an instanciation of what I might call "the joy of philosophy!" Platonic Socrates' "friendship for Homer" (X, 595b) is made manifest in a definitive way in this careful and critical interpretation. I am pleased to include Howland's work on my "top 5%" list of outstanding books (which already includes works by Klein, Sallis, Brann, Nichols, and Hyland) on Plato's great dialogue.
The best study of the Republic that I have read.......1999-05-19
This relatively small volume is an essential addition to the library of anyone who has an interest in the Republic, Plato or the classics in general. Unlike many other studies I have read, Howland's focuses on the relationship of the Republic to the Greek literary tradition, Homer's Odyssey in particular, but also tragedy and comedy. This perspective not only informs us about the philosophical content, but it helps to resolve many of the apparent contradictions in the Republic, and gives us some clues as to what Plato was trying to say. This volume has increased my understanding of the Republic, and has encouraged me to go back to the original text over and over again, for each subsequent reading is rewarded by new insight. Well worth the price.
