Book Description
This reissue of a treasured classic offers a beautiful window into the people and places that shaped the life of beloved author, scholar, and apologist C. S. Lewis. In photographs and text (much of it in Lewis's own words), Douglas Gilbert and Clyde S. Kilby introduce us to such memorable friends as J. R. R. Tolkien and transport us to such magical places as the deer park outside Lewis's rooms at Magdalen College, Oxford. We also meet Lewis as a talented and brilliant child in Belfast, captivated by the myths and legends of the North, already writing and illustrating imaginative stories and poems at a young age.
While the book includes an essay tracing Lewis's struggle to find faith and a chronology of his life, it is not a biography per se but rather a personal introduction, a composite portrait of a fascinating individual and the world in which he lived. Attractively laid out in a fresh new format, this volume will be prized both by longtime fans of Lewis and by those encountering him for the first time.

Revised images from C.S. Lewis's World.......2006-05-29
This reissue of the out of print C.S. Lewis: Images of His World puts together a fine collection of photos depicting the places Lewis lived and visited as well as the people he knew. It does a good job of filling in the imagination for the reader of C.S. Lewis. The photos are accompanied by subtexts explaining each picture's content and in many cases they are accompanied by a quotation from one of Lewis's works. An introduction, chronology of Lewis's life, and brief biographical sketch complete the work.
Although this is a reissue of the original book that came out in 1973, there has been a major overhaul to the layout, yielding both positive and negative results. First, the new edition is slightly smaller in size. Second, the orientation has been changed: the original book was 9 inches high and 11 inches wide, whereas the new book is just the opposite orientation of 10 1/2 inches high and 8 inches wide; (imagine a regular magazine and you have the layout for the new edition; turn the magazine on its side and put the binding on the left and you have the layout of the old edition.) These changes unfortunately have resulted in some photos that were formerly seen in their entirety on one page now being split over two pages. Result: artistically inferior.
The third change, is that the order of the photos has undergone a major reshuffling, as has the texts that accompany them. Most of the material in the first book still appears in the second, but the order is different. (A couple of C.S. Lewis drawings in letters to Owen Barfield that appeared in the first edition of this book have been dropped from the new edition.)
The fourth change is quite positive. It is amazing to see what a difference a mere three decades can make in photo reproductive technology. The book has a mixture of black & white and color photos, and while the black & white photos don't change much between the first and second edition of this book, the color photos are FAR better in the new edition. The subjects depicted have had their color restored and no longer appear to be so drab: one is reminded of what the Sistine Chapel looked like before and after the late 20th century restoration. Photos of such things as Tintern Abbey or Beaumaris Castle are brought to life by the new technology and are much more pleasing to the eye.
To sum, many overall changes have been made to the quality of the photos as well as the layout of their presentation. I think the net effect is zero: two steps forward and two steps backwards. It's a pity, really, because the old layout could have been kept while using new photo reproductive technology to enhance the photos. Oh well, the bottom line is that if you don't have a copy of this book, by all means buy it - you'll be pleased with the purchase. If you have the original book, you still might want to purchase the new edition as many of the photos have been vividly enhanced. (Conversely, if you have the new edition and run across a copy of the old, this, too, is worth obtaining for the better layout of some of the photos.)
Photos, text in a reissued classic.......2006-04-14
If C.S. LEWIS: IMAGES OF HIS WORLD sounds familiar to avid scholars of Lewis, it's because this is a reissue of a classic which probes the people and places which inspired the religious author. Photos and text - much of which are Lewis's own words - survey his friendships, beloved places, friends, family and colleagues in a fine survey of his life and faith. Lewis was captivated by the myths and legends of the North as a young child: his interest served as both a starting point for his involvement in religion and as a starting point for his literary creations. Any who would understand Lewis will find this a visual treat and a powerful starting point for understanding his vast wellspring.
A journey into the shadowlands.......2002-12-24
If you love C.S. Lewis as much as I do, then you will find this book captivating, transporting you into the world of Jack as a boy and as a man, as a pagan and as a Christian. Hopefully it will be back in print soon. Every page is lavishly illustrated with photos and artwork of people and places that were dear to Lewis. What makes it even more special are the descriptions of each place or person by lewis himself, taken from his letters and books. IT is the best gift a Lewis fan could receive, too, so look for a friend!
A wonderfully descriptive book.......1998-03-14
It is most unfortunate that this superb book has gone out of print. It is a pictorial tour of the places and people familiar to C.S. Lewis. Next to each picture or illustration is a caption explaining the relation to Lewis, with most of the country scenes having vivid, picturesque quotes from Lewis himself. This book can be read in one sitting or slowly digested over several days. If you ever find a copy, hang on to it. It's a lovely book.

A must have for the Civil War Buff.......2005-07-24
An excellent first person narrative from the point of view of a Captain in the Army of the Potomac. Whereas most civil war histories are written from an omnicient thrid person view which focuses on battles and strategy; here we get a chance to see what the war was like to a lowly footsoldier. What comes off most is the incredible monotony, privitation, and uncertainty which dominated the soldier's life. One also gets an insight to how magical the simplest pleasures (ie. coffee) can be to one who has been long without. It has been said that war consists of long periods of boredom interspaced with moments of sheer terror. This book brings that adage home in a journal written on the spot by a man who went on to become one of the great 19th century historians.
A remarkably vivid memoir of military life.......2001-11-13
Ably edited by Stephen Sears, On Campaign With The Army Of The Potomac: The Civil War Journal Of Theodore Ayrault Dodge is the compelling and informative memoir of Theodore Doge (1842-1909) who joined the Union Army at the age of 19 and kept a running "journal-type account" of wis battlefield experiences. He was a lieutenant colonel in the Army of the Potomac's 101st, and later transferred to the 199th New York infantry regiment. He saw action at the Seven Days' Battle, Second Bull Run, and Chancellorsville, ending his journal and fighting career on the bloody field of Gettysburg. He was wounded three times -- once slightly, once seriously, and then losing a leg. On Campaign With The Army Of The Potomac is a remarkably vivid memoir of military life that is a welcome and much appreciated contribution to the growing library of Civil War studies.

Customer Reviews:
Poor writing and lacks originality.......2007-06-28
This is an extremely dry book. There are no maps (which is hard to believe for a political science book/text) and the charts Handelman uses are irrelevant. The writing style is frustrating to follow. Every section is out of chronological order.
My biggest peeve of this book is that Handelman doesn't provide his own research. He basically paraphrases other works and combined them all into a book. Its a cop out way of writing a political science book. None of his ideas are his and he lacks critical analysis necessary for a good political science text.
For example, Handelmann associates modernization with westernization however this isn't necessarily accurate. Many countries modernize without westernizing. To be fair, many of these same countries do absorb few western qualities but after the initial modernization process, they shed any western values. In fact, this produces a sharper anti-western sentiment as these modernized countries believe that westernization is not a necessary component of modernization. Handelmann does not distinguish between modernization and westernization- it is too favorable an argument that lacks critical analysis. Basically, Handelmann is one lazy dude trying to make a quick buck! Don't buy this book. I had it for a political science course and I wanted to throw it in the trask after reading every chapter. If you have to read it for a course then critically analyze Handelmann's arguments because they are all flawed- bonus participation points~
Enlightening........2006-08-20
This was my text for an undergraduate sociology course. Handelman did an exceptional job in presenting the multiple inter-related facets that complicate the development of Third World nations. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the plight of these countries. My only disappointment was his underlyng premise that democracy is the answer. I suspect that is the belief in most of Western society. However, I am not convinced.
to better the understand the third world.......2002-11-20
Handelman provides what the third world has to deal with to become industrialized democracies. He foucses on underdevelopment, democratic changes. religion and politics, ethnic conflict, women in development, agrarian reform, and rapid uranization among other topics. THe book was published recently so it even has some information about 9-11 and its impact.
Good source for third world development.
Great Textbook and Resource Tool.......2002-04-14
I had to read this book for an undergraduate course on the politics of the developing world. It can be difficult to read at times if the reader does not have some understanding of the developing world or the theories that surround their slow development into modernity. Overall it is an wonderful text for building a knowledge base and an excelllent reference tool.

Book Description
Recent world events have created a compelling need for new perspectives and realistic solutions to the problem of sovereign debt. The success of the Jubilee 2000 movement in raising public awareness of the devastating effects of debt, coupled with the highly publicized Bono/O'Neill tour of Africa, and the spectacular default and economic implosion of Argentina have helped spur a global debate over debt. A growing chorus of globalization critics, galvanized by the Catholic Church's demand for forgiveness and bolstered by recent defaults, has put debt near the top of the international agenda. Creditor governments and international financial institutions have belatedly recognized the need for more sustainable progress on debt as an inescapable step towards economic recovery in many parts of the world. This book is intended to advance the dialogue around these issues by providing a comprehensive overview of the problems raised by debt and describing new and practical approaches to overcoming them. It will be the first in more than a decade to bring together under one cover the voices of prominent members of the international debt community. It will include pieces from the most relevant constituencies: from creditors (the IMF/World Bank, government lenders, private investors) to critics (debtor representatives, activists, and academics) and analysis from economists, bankers, lawyers, social scientists, and politicians. As contributions come from such leading thinkers across a range of disciplines, this book will offer a timely guide for understanding and influencing the debt debate.
Book Description
This book examines the political and developmental implications of the new information and communication technologies (NICT) in the Third World. Whereas the concept of the 'digital divide' tends to focus on technological and quantitative indicators, this work stresses the crucial role played by the political regime type, the pursued development model and the specific configuration of actors and decision-making dynamics. Two starkly contrasting Third World countries, state-socialist Cuba and the Latin America's "show-case democracy" Costa Rica, were chosen for two in-depth empirical country studies.

Book Description
Features case studies primarily focusing on Ethiopia and Kenya to offer research from a variety of regional communities to explore issues of household sales behavior, price determinants, livestock market information systems, cross border and export marketing, and crisis period marketing.
Firmly tied to recommendations for future research and policy, the editors contend that current thinking, which asserts that more effective marketing will automatically achieve multiple desirable outcomes, including environmental benefits, may be flawed.
The studies presented illustrate how it is possible to improve livestock marketing and achieve multiple desirable objectives through serious and coordinated effort.
Filling an important gap in the literature, this is important reading for all those interested in livestock development and pastoral economies in East Africa.

Book Description
Adult education has been practised in Uganda in various forms, perhaps since humans first inhabited the land; but very little has been written about it. It is therefore difficult to find relevant materials to use in the study of education in Uganda. Makerere University has been engaged in adult education since 1953, and so celebrated fifty years of its existence and service in 2003. This book is published in commemoration of this achievement. Its objectives are to document the development of adult education in Uganda, establish a base for further specialised study on adult education, provide a teaching resource for the study of adult and community education and pave the way for future adult education work. As a critical review and reflection on salient aspects and issues of adult education, including on the relative merits and disadvantages of indigenous and colonial languages as media for adult education, it is the first publication of its kind in Uganda.

Book Description
African Families in the Twenty-First Century explores the idea that the family is the basic unit of society and an enduring multifunctional institution in Africa. The functions and structures of African families, as well as the multiple roles played by AfricaÂ's women, are undergoing structural changes. The ways in which education, employment, and current economic conditions reshape these complex roles are immense. The challenges facing African families and their membersÂsuch as globalization, war, poverty, economic restructuring, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, harmful traditional practices, aging, and care and support of the elderlyÂhave magnified due to a series of economic, social, political, religious, ecological, and other related factors. Author Aderanti Adepoju explores the vulnerability and resilience of African families in the face of these crises and challenges. He also looks at the opportunities facing African families in the new millennium. Because of the importance of African families to the development process, African Families in the Twenty-First Century is essential reading for planners, policy makers, activists, academics, and students.
Book Description
This comprehensive, user-friendly resource is grounded in the belief that taking responsibility for one's own health is the key to wellness. Dr. Carolyn Dean's Natural Prescriptions for Common Ailments includes an A-to-Z listing of common ailments, homeopathic and herbal treatments, and a quick reference for symptoms and remedies, to empower readers to take charge of their own health.
Customer Reviews:
Naturopathic vitalism:.......2007-05-14
This book abundantly illustrates naturopathy's vitalism. And I quote: "there are homeopathic remedies that can help, but if your vital force is very low, homeopathic remedies might create a healing reaction that can make you even more fatigued, so they should be taken under the supervision of a homeopath [p.047...] there are homeopathic remedies for constipation. These can be used for a short time to stimulate your body's own vital force to improve this condition [p.055...] your body might not direct its energies toward creating new life until it has a strong, viable life force to sustain it [p.110...] calc carb [...] this remedy is used for some acute conditions, but it is mostly a constitutional remedy, which means it is used to boost a person's vital force [p.196...] staphysagria [...] it is therefore prescribed in a high potency to strengthen a person's vital force [p.206]." I rate any claimant of "vital force is a scientific fact" -- as NDs do so claim and must claim by oath, creed, and standard of practice -- LOW. -rc.
A Must-Have Book for your First Aid Kit.......2002-06-15
Dr. Dean provides us with a comprehensive and easy to follow guide to treating our everyday medical complaints. She writes this book for the layperson, guiding us to use remedies that are easy to find in our local health food stores. One can tell that she has seen these remedies work and that she believes in them. I have read books of remedies in the past but they are presented in a theoretical fashion. Dr. Dean is writing from experience! What I love about this book is that she clearly describes what can cause the ailment, what the variety of symptoms might be, and how to deal with very specific symptoms using herbs and/or homeopathy. When I have looked up a particular illness, I have come away with easy-to-do solutions that worked. Yes they worked.
In addition to the compendium of health problems and treatments, Dr. Dean provides us with a straightforward description of homeopathy and how it works. Accompanying this description is a listing of different homeopathic and herbal remedies and the very precise conditions that they are used to treat.
I particularly enjoyed the section of the book entitled Advice and Information. Dr. Dean gives her `natural' insight to illuminate topics like antibiotics, surgery, x-rays, and dieting. Without being preachy, Dr Dean encourages us to consider the impact of non-natural substances in our food and environment.
In conclusion, Dr Carolyn Dean's Natural Prescriptions for Common Ailments is a practical, easy to follow and valuable guide to self-care using natural substances. An extra bonus is that it is a really interesting and informative book to just sit down and read. It is for these reasons that, as a health practitioner, I recommend this book to my clients.
