This volume collects essays of the last fifteen years of his life. The work has sections on 'Convictions and Beliefs' 'Science and Life' ' Public Affairs' ' Personalities' and 'His own people: The Jews"
The work features expositions of some of Einstein's major scientific work.
Among the personalities written about are Gandhi who Einstein greatly admires, Newton, Kepler, Planck, Madame Curie, Langevin, and lesser known figures Paul Ehrenfest,Carl von Ossietsky.
Einstein writes much about the terrible changes in Germany he saw in his own lifetime, the rise of Nazism and Anti- Semitism.
He writes about the creation of a national homeland for the Jews, his own Zionism, and his own connection with the Jewish people.
He writes too about his conception of world- peace, about the threat to the world brought about something he is no small part a contributor to, the harnessing of the atom.
In writing about himself in the opening section of the work he says, "I do the thing which my own nature drives me to do. It is embarassing to earn so much love and respect for it."
He celebrates the life of thought , of the solitary individual .
Einstein is the greatest modern example of Keynes dictum of how it is 'ideas' that change the world. He is the example of how one man alone , thinking, transformed our understanding of nature, and our power to change it.

Out of my Later Years is a collection of Einstein's speeches and articles covering not just physics but his thoughts on the social condition of man, of Jews, and of war as well as several speeches about the likes of Max Planck, Mahatma Gandhi, and Marie Curie.
As letters and speeches, these are written as the ordinary man that Einstein once was - very easy to read and understand. Even some of the physics lectures are understandable. Each is relatively short making this perfect for when you want to read something of substance but don't have much time.
The sections on Public Affairs are especially haunting as Einstein presents his arguments for the "global village" and advocated someting akin to the current U.N. - things that began to come into their own after his passing. In particular, there is an interchange between him and a group of Communist scientists that underlines the Cold War tension in its height and is a chilling read now in the Post Soviet Union age.
A different man.......2000-01-05
I found Einstein's desire to start a rock band at such an early age very surprising. A man before his time for sure. Singing about relativity while distancing himself from the groupies must have been difficult. The book reads like a good guitar riff, jolting one's mind from time to time. Excellent!

As poignant and nostalgic as the man himself.......2001-05-30
I bought this book in my early twenties still unsure of what to do with my life but at least certain of the fundamentals and morals with which one should follow. Einsteins prose on life, morality, religion, science, personalities are words which echo the wisdom of many years and the experiences which have shaped them. Now, 7 years later, I pick up this book, and am reminded of a man who knew that the future is uncertain, but with the the search for truth and compassion, it could be a great place.
This book is a great read - I admire how a man who's thoughts were so complicated, yet simple at the same time. He did not forget where he came from , nor forgot that which is truly significant. And that which drives humanity is not in the theories of relativity, but in our simple acts of humanity.
This book encompasses an era of 1934 - 1950, yet its prose is timeless - even now! Occum's razor wuld be proud.

Einstein was not just a famous scientist. As this book reveals, he was also a profound and well-written author. The essays in this collection are enlightening, easily understood, and brief but to the point. I would recommend this book to everyone.

As good as the critics say-- well-written, based on very extensive Italian sources. But written from a far-Left perspective. Ginsborg wants to see Italian capitalism destroyed but he doesn't tell us how this is to occur -- presumably not through the ballot box-- and he doesn't tell us what will be put in its place. This permits him to criticize everything and be held responsible for nothing.
A Fundamental Reading..........2004-01-11

For most of the last century, range management meant managing land for livestock. The best measure of success was how well a landowner grew the grass that cattle ate. In this century, landowners look to hunting and wildlife viewing for income; rangeland is now also wildlife habitat, and landowners are managing their land not just for cattle but also for wildlife, most notably deer and quail.
Unlike other books on white-tailed deer in places where rainfall is relatively high and the environment stable, this book takes an ecological approach to deer management in the semiarid lands of Oklahoma, Texas, and northern Mexico. These are the least productive of white-tail habitats, where periodic drought punctuates long-term weather patterns. The book's focus on this landscape across political borders is one of its original and lasting contributions. This is a great reference book for anyone interested in range management and wildlife. I would highly recommend this book. The co-authors of this book are very dedicated to the preservation of wildlife. I am proud to consider them both friends of mine. Thank you for the good work.

This book is a very informative book. It is very well written and researched. I have been able to institute many of these ideas into my deer hunting activities.
Almost All You Need to Practice QDMA.......2003-07-02
The authors are nationally recognized experts and it shows. Page after page of the science of white-tailed deer makes for informative and most of the time interesting reading.
As a QDM practitioner I found the book somewhat low on "how to" but very very high on background and research. It is an excellent reference text but I like Dougherty & Dougherty's "Grow'Em Right" for "how to" information on food plots and habitat creation.
This book is a classic and should be on every serious whitetail enthusiast's book shelf. I would like to see it updated with more "how to" information for non-experts like myself.
Excellent book - must have for Quality Deer Management.......2001-11-20
I am very impressed by this book. If you are a landowner or member of a hunt club and want to improve the quality of the deer on the land you manage, this book is mandatory. It explains the how and why of Quality Deer Management (QDM) It convincingly debunks many of the myths about whitetail deer. It is not a book on how to hunt. It is a book on how to improve your deer herd to produce a healthy population with more trophy bucks. I have started to implement QDM on my land, and I am buying two more copies for Christmas presents for my hunter friends so they will understand what I am trying to accomplish.

I've hunted whitetail since I was 14 (only 10 seasons), and recently I learned of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). Wanting to learn more about Quality Deer Management (QDM), I found this book.
Reading this book was the best possible thing I could have done for myself and the sport of deer hunting. It teaches you the basics of QDM and explains why you should do it. This book addresses old myths like why it is bad to shoot anterless deer. It explains that QDM is about deer heard health, not just antler size. It expains how to set up a program on your property, explaining how to do deer density counts, why deer weight is important to get, how to age a deer, types of food plots, etc..
I feel this is an important book for whitetail hunters to read. I hunt on public land, and before reading this book, I would have shot the first buck I saw. Now, I've learned that where I hunt, it is more important to let the buck walk on by.

Simply put; this book is a must for those who are serious about QDM. This book is the bible of the how and why of Quality Deer Management and takes you from theory to practicle application. Buy it, read it, reference it and apply it.

A Serious Book for Serious White-Tailed Deer People.......2003-07-02
I break my deer books into two categories: reference(the Hall text) and "how to"(Grow 'Em Right) by Dougherty and Dougherty. The Doughertys tell you how to create great deer hunting with habitat and food plots while Hall tells you why you should have good habitat. Both books belong on the serious deer enthusiast's book shelf.
Hall's book is a compilation of articles by some of the nation's leading deer experts. The chapters are both interesting and informative. They provide the necessary background you need to better understand the white-tailed deer,it's habitat and its behavior. It's a must own for professionals and serious lay persons alike.

White-tailed deer (Ododcoileus virginiana) can substantially affect the structure and species composition of a forest. The tolerance of a forest community to browsing may vary by type as a result of varying biotic and abiotic factors of the environment. To date, no studies have compared the effects of browsing among forest communities within a physiographic region. We investigated the effects of browsing on vegetation structure and woody seedling composition in three forest types (oak-hickory, Virginia pine-eastern red cedar, bottomland hardwood) in Manassas National Battlefield Park (MNBP), Virginia, USA. We compared forb cover, vertical plant cover (0-1.5m tall), and survival of tagged seedlings in 10 exclosed (2mx6m) and 10 unexclosed plots in each forest type during a 5-year period. No differential effects of browsing were found among forest types. In all forest types, deer (67deer/km^2) suppressed forb and vertical plant cover to levels less than would be expected in the absence of deer. Seedling survival rates of most species were significantly reduced by browsing. By the 4th year of the study, box elder (Acer negundo), hickory (Carya spp.), and red maple (Acer rubrum) had been eliminated from unexclosed plots, and red and white oaks (Quercus spp.) dramatically reduced. Ash (Fraxinus spp.), black cherry (Prunus serotina), and hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), although significantly impacted, remained the most abundant species throughout the study. These findings suggest that white-tailed deer may be modifying the structure of the forest interior to the extent that it adversely affects wildlife species dependent on a dense understory to thrive. We predict that the future composition of forests in MNBP will shift towards stands with fewer species and a greater dominance of ash, black cherry, and hackberry, particularly in the oak-hickory and bottomland hardwood forests, where the majority of current dominants are most affected.

Description:
Deer movements in relation to timber harvests have not been studied within nonmigratory white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations. We compared home range and core area size and overlap, deer movements during timber harvests, and habitat use before and after harvests for deer associated and not associated with clearcuts. We radio-monitored 83 adult female deer pre- (3 months prior to), during, and post- (3 months after) timber harvest. Change in home range and core area size and overlap did not differ between control deer (home ranges comprised entirely of mature forest during all time periods) and treatment deer (>=1 telemetry location within a harvested stand during any time period). During timber harvests, treatment deer were located outside their pre-harvest home ranges more often than control deer and generally were located closer to clearcuts than in other time periods. During both the pre- and post-timber harvest time periods, deer used clearcut habitats (stands @?5-years-old) in greater proportion than availability. Lack of significant changes in white-tailed deer movements before, during, and after timber harvest suggests habitat management aimed at attracting deer away from problem areas (e.g., areas with low regeneration success) or toward browse supplies during severe winters would likely be unsuccessful in the central Appalachians of West Virginia.
