This invaluable book collects some of the first-published first-person accounts of the tragedy, described in old-fashioned prose and enhanced by photographs and illustrations redolent of Edwardian society, with captions such as "Ladies and gentlemen in riding habit exercised on mechanical horses and camels in the ship's gymnasium." Some of the social attitudes of the day are preserved to often startling effect: the habits of obedience of "the Teutonic race" are repeatedly praised, and one brave Titanic officer used what the book's introduction terms "the strange ethical algebra which decided that one female, travelling first class, deserved life some six times as much as one male, travelling third class." Yet it's just such period detail that makes this book so compelling--not to mention the vivid sense that the passengers just didn't get it, even while disaster was upon them. "To illustrate further how little danger was apprehended," writes survivor Lawrence Beesley, "when it was discovered ... that the forward lower deck was covered with small ice, snowballing matches were arranged for the following morning.... The cries of drowning people after the Titanic gave the final plunge were a thunderbolt to us."
Book Description
What it was really like. Panic, despair, shocking inefficiency, and a dash of heroism. Two lengthy narratives by passengers who had a thorough knowledge of the sea and by members of the ship's crew. More thrilling than any fictional account. 26 illustrations.

A HISTORY BUFF MUST READ!!.......2007-08-17
This book definately confirms the acutual facts of the Titanic tragedy from the the day of departure until the impact with the iceberg. It gives you the true facts from the mouths of the survivors & definately corrects misconceptions lasting through the tales of time. Even the exact jounal facts of the trial after the tragedy confirms facts not accurate, even to the song the band was playing when the ship went down. It also does confirm facts that were true. Also, you learn of the changes in ship law regarding life boat number in regards to souls on board, & other major changes after the Titanic tragedy. THE MAIN THING LEARNED WAS THAT MANY BRAVE SOULS WENT DOWN WITH THIS SHIP WITHOUT COMPLAINT OR CAUSING ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL WHEN NOT NECESSARY, PLEASE HONOR THESE PEOPLE & THEIR MEMORIES AS YOU READ THIS BOOK. More detailed history that you will ever read regarding this tragedy...
Loving the book.......2007-07-11
I love this book. Learning the account of the disaster from the perspective of those who went through it is interesting.
unsurpassed.......2007-05-09
"That cold green water, crawling its ghostly way up the staircase, was a sight that stamped itself indelibly in my memory. Step, by step, it made its way up, covering the electric lights, which for a short time shone under the suface with a horribly weird effect." This, tetsimony from an officer of the ship, named Lightoller, matches any description for effect that any fiction writer could create. It is the fact that this book is taken from the testimony of four of Titanic's survivors that makes this book so excellent. One gets a real sense of the times---Edwardian England---where duty was paramount and the supposed superiorty of the English race, which colors the survivor's accounts, hints at the very pride that contributed to the disaster---a fascinating paradox. Not only do you get the testimoney from four survivors--each several chapters---but also a boat by boat testimonial from the survivors of those boats. Another reviewer here found this testimony mundane, but I found it fascinating and objectively complete. It seems that the most famous account of the disaster in book form, A Night to Remember, took much of its information from this book, and what makes this book so much more appealing is that the accounts are unfiltered. Captain Lightoller's account is particularly illuminating in that it shines a critical light on the Titanic hearings before the U.S. and English governments, which he calls a "farce." Another fascinating thing about this book is that despite the differing experiences related here by the survivors you begin to pick up bits and pieces of testimony that weave a common thread of experience among all---like a great puzzle.
Interesting, but long and drawn out.......2004-02-19
I'm very interested in the Titanic, and have read several books about the events surronding this disaster. This book was interesting, but very very long and drawn out. Sometimes I was so bored reading it that I fell asleep. Particulary, I didn't care to know what every single person inside of every single lifeboat did, said, didn't do or didn't say, etc. But, like I said before, there was some interesting info. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone nor will I ever read it again.
A wonderful remembrance of not such a wonderful thing.......2002-05-01
But definitely worth reading if you want to learn more about the Titanic and how the survivors felt.

Book Description
Much more than a record of an extraordinary military career, the life story of Colonel Sir Hugh Boustead details how he spent the greater part of his life in service to undeveloped countries. In addition to serving in wars in Sudan and Ethiopia, Colonel Boustead worked for many years to establish tribal peace, build schools and medical facilities, and train future leaders in the Western Sudan, Southern Arabia, and Abu Dhabi. All of these adventures are delightfully recounted in this memoir of a military man, a deserter, a boxing champion, and an explorer.
Book Description
From the Patriot Act to Janet JacksonÂ's Super Bowl show, recent events have embroiled AmericaÂ's First Amendment rights in ongoing battles to maintain this countryÂ's freedom of expression. And with the media taking an ever-more prominent role in the lifestyles of all citizens, the First Amendment continues to be one of the most hotly and dramatically contested issues in the public eye.
Now, with Speaking Freely, Floyd Abrams, the attorney on the front lines of AmericaÂ's fight for uncensored expression for more than thirty years, re-creates eight of the most important cases of his careerÂlandmark trials and Supreme Court arguments in cases involving key First Amendment protections, including the famous Pentagon Papers case. With adversaries as diverse as Richard Nixon, Wayne Newton, and Rudy Giuliani, and allies as unlikely as Kenneth Starr and Senator Mitch McConnell, Abrams takes readers behind the scenes to examine his strategies, the ramifications of each of the decisions, and the long-term significance of each case, while presenting a clear and compelling look at the law in action.
In the tradition of bestselling authors on legal issues such as F. Lee Bailey, Louis Nizer, and Alan Dershowitz, Floyd Abrams conveys the dramatic immediacy of the trials and appeals in which First Amendment law has been createdÂand addresses the continuing importance of upholding AmericaÂ's constitutional right to free speech.

From Pentagon Papers to NSA Wiretapping: NYT and Freedom of the Press.......2006-06-27
As I write this review, CNN is reporting that the Bush Administration is threatening the New York Times with prosecution for revealing the NSA wire-tapping program that by-passed the FISA court, which has the EXCLUSIVE mandate to review all such intrusions. The Bush Administration is evidently ungrateful about the fact that the NYT stupidly held back on the story until after Rove could steal the election from Kerry by encouraging the Ohio State Secretary committing criminal acts in twelve districts. At the same time, there is also a moronic proposed amendment to the Constitution to prohibit the burning of the American flag in protest.
"Speaking Freely" is an extraordinary book that documents, over and over again, why our national security lies not only in force of arms but also in, quoting Judge Murray Gurfein (June 1971), a "cantankerous press, an obstinate press, a ubiquitious press (that) must be suffered by those in authority in order to preserve the even greater values of freedom of expression and the right of the people to know."
The Cheney-Bush Administration is moving toward totalitarianism, and appears seriously stupid (another of those ideological fantasies) in believing that they can cover up their ineptitude by censoring the press.
See my reviews of "The One Percent Doctrine," "How Would a Patriot Act," and "The Case for Impeachment" to better understand what other authorities are saying about the lunacy of this position. These two guys are a combination of impeachable (mostly Cheney) and laughingstock (mostly Bush) who have leveraged the extremist Republican machine to steal two presidential elections and violate so many international and domestic laws as to be richly eligible for a public tarring and feathering.
This book, "Speaking Freely," is a massive vaccination for the public against the disease of "state secrecy" that is used to cover up incompetence, inpropriety, and high crimes and misdemeanors richly deserving of impeachment.
Please note that the law suit of the New York Times for "blowing" NSA's capabilities is actually a cover-up for the fact that we are going deaf and blind because Al Qaeda is not stupid--they have been moving "offline" since 9-11, and the Administration is preparing to pretend that their failure to be effective against Al Qaeda is the fault of the New York Times.
Floyd Abrams may well be one of the most valuable Americans in modern history. He defended the NYT in the Pentagon Papers, and won. Today, the NYT should rely on the sensibility of the people to defend them. Deep in his book, Counselor Abrams makes the point that journalists MUST have the freedom to listen to sources "off the record," and he places the burden for protecting secrets on those who choose to leak them for whatever reason.
I am reminded that the incumbent President is the "leaker in chief" who seems to make the law suit his needs. As one Constitutional lawyer has stated, he has the power neither to interpret the law nor make the law. It is George Bush, and his string puller Dick Cheney, who are "out of bounds" and richly deserving of impeachment.
Speaking Freely.......2006-03-15
The book provided a real insight into the process of the way that lawyers address the very complex issues related to the First Amendment.
But, seriously, what about campaign financing?.......2006-02-23
This is a great book in so many ways. Great stories, and a great vision of the First Amendment. But I have to admit that I was let down by the chapter on campaign financing. It didn't bother me that Abrams doesn't agree with me, but I was troubled that he didn't even present the biggest problem with big money politics. Abrams makes much of the fact that Sen. McCain could not identify any specific acts of corruption pre-McCain/Feingold, but actual quid pro quo corruption is not the real reason we need reform. We need reform because politics has become so expensive that the "little guy" can't afford to campaign for office; this results in the systematic exclusion of certain kinds of voices--those of middle and working class Amweicans. We need those voices, too, if we're going to have a real democracy. I would have loved to hear Abrams' pro-First Amendment response to the concern that more voices are actually excluded by the current system than are let in. Mr. Abrams, please tell us why you think we can't change the system to get more voices into the marketplace of political ideas??
Excellent review of prominent First Amendment cases.......2005-09-06
I'm biased as I have been a fan of Floyd Abrams for years, but I can honestly say he does a terrific job in discussing some of the prominent First Amendment cases he's been involved with in his distinguished career. Of course, the memorable Pentagon Papers case that Abrams won is discussed in length.
Abrams spares no one from criticism, including Wayne Newton and the sainted Rudy Giulani. However, the best part of the book was his discussion of the campaign finance reform lawsuit. Bitter over losing the case, not for himself but for the cause of freedom, he rips into the liberal judges who upheld the law. Their bias against him is clearly evident. That's another reason I admire him: his willingness to criticize the left as well as the right for suppressing free speech. The right does it in the name of "national security" and "morality"; the left does it in the name of "diversity" and "political correctness." With freedom on attack from both sides of the political spectrum, the country needs champions of the Constitution like Floyd Abrams.
I highly recommend this book to any reader concerned with the erosion of our freedoms.
A Media Law Must!.......2005-08-10
If you read just one book on media law this year (but why would you limit yourself?), make it this one. In addition to being an entertaining and enlightening look inside some of the highest profile media and First Amendment cases of that past 35 years--including the Pentagon Papers, Wayne Newton's libel case against NBC, the Brooklyn Museum of Art case, and the case challenging McCain-Feingold-- this book, by the country's widely-acknowledged dean of First Amendment litigation, serves as a good primer for those not versed in First Amendment and media law, and as a refresher for those already familiar with the law.

Darling "first favorites" books.......2007-07-03
I received these books (Daisy: The Little Duck with the Big Feet! - Box Set of 4) as a shower gift when I was expecting my first child five years ago. Since then, the books (especially "Go to Sleep, Daisy") have been the first favorites of both of my children, a girl and a boy. The simple stories and repetition have captivated them as babies and our books have gotten much wear and tear! Plus, the colorful illustrations are darling and attracted my kids' attention from the start. This cute set makes a great shower or baby gift!

Beautiful Book!.......2007-06-26
I first saw this book in Barnes and Noble and of course wrote it down and went home to order it from Amazon....I love birds but I am in no way a professional anything when it comes to birds-I just love to feed them in my backyard and see how many different kinds come everyday. This book is worth the price of admission for the beautiful artwork alone-not to mention the poetry and useful information about everything from binoculars to feeding the birds to what to plant in your yard to attract more birds.....but it is so much more than the usual books about backyard birds....If you love birds of any kind you will love this book!
What's this interest in birds all about?.......2007-06-14
There have been many books published over the years which have attempted to give an overview of what Birds ,Birdwatching and Birding is all about. Although many are pretty good;none do a better job of giving an idea of all that it entails;particularly for someone just getting interested or even if they have had a passing interest for years. It would also be of interest for someone who has been "Birdwatching "for many years.
There are so many forms that Birding takes, that only a book like this is able to get it across. Under the Editorial you get a pretty good idea of the subjects covered. You might wonder how so many topics can be covered in such a "little big book". The anser to that,is that the coverage is very brief;but in enough detail to get the ideas across.
I am what one might call an "Avid" Birder or Birdwatcher. It has been a deep interest to me for 20 years,I have seen nearly 600 birds (Species) in North America, 400 in Ontario alone. As I am somewhat of a Bibliophile (book lover)as well;over that time I have accumulated over 1000 books on Birds and related Natural History. You might wonder how there could be so many.Well,as you glance through this book you will see many names and the mention of many books .I have books about,or by and most of these people and subjects.
I mention this ,because if someone were to ask me to suggest one book ,written in a simple way, that tells all about "birds and birdwatching";this would be ,without any hesitation ,the one book I would recommend.
This book is one that I would tend to call "An edited Book" .Generally speaking,I am not too impressed with them ,for the simple reason many are simply a gathering up of a bunch of "stuff" by one person or a group, packaged up,and published. I don't know how this book was put together; I see the Editor ,Natasha Tabori Fried has edited many others. The thing that really gives this book endorsement and credibility is that the introduction is written by Kenn Kaufman, one of the best known ,experienced, and respected persons in Birding in North America.
While this book covers many aspects of birding;I have to point out that there is one major area that has not been touched on.
Birding ,to a large extent,is a thing where the participation of people with one another is a major element. Although there are some who pursue Birding on their own; by and large, most participate with others. Clubs and organizations abound, membership fees are extremely small, and it is in these clubs that one easily makes friends and share their knowledge and/or enthusiasm with each other. These clubs have excellent meetings and arrange field trips to find and study the various aspects of birds. These clubs consist of beginners and all the way through to experts;with all accepeted as equals. All one has to do is show an interest.A large part of the enjoyment one derives from birding is the time you will spend with other birders. I must point out that Birding ,unlike a spectator sport ,where one sees the people that are associated with it,from afar;the stands, the balcony,TV,etc. With birding you can easily meet the well known and experienced birders in your area;all you have to do is "show an interest".
So,if after reading this book you want to pursue any aspect of Birding, and don't know where to start;search out someone who is a birder, look for a bird or Naure club in your area;you will be given a warm welcome. If there is any one thing that Birders love to do it is to share their interests with others. In no time, you will make all kinds of new friends.
Personally,I heard about a Nature Walk for birds, and decided to "tag along" .On that first morning,I met many birders, saw 74 bird species, and what a wonderful group of people I've met over the years; and what a wonderful bunch of trips ,both locally and further away I've enjoyed.
Good Birding!

Customer Reviews:
great kid's book.......2004-07-29
An adult might find the storylines a bit repetitive but my 3 year old loves all of the Lars books. We got her some at xmas and she was so pleased that we bought all the others for her birthday 5 months later and she wants them read to her over and over. She even 'reads' them to her younger brother!
Too many sequels.......2003-04-19
Little Polar Bear, Lars, has experienced several adventures in previous books
about discovering friendship with diverse creatures in unfamiliar settings.
While the first book was charming, and the beautiful illustrations continue to
delight, the story lines have become strained. In this one, Larsý lop-sided
friendship with an oil-smeared puffin, and a brief scary flight in a hot air
balloon were disappointing.
