Book Description

Meet Jim Berkland, a California geologist whose forecast of the famous October 17, 1989 World Series Quake that rumbled through the San Francisco Bay Area was right on the money. This is the first book to document a geologist's uncanny ability to foretell earthquakes around the world. This facinating read includes stories of earthquake survivors, a wealth of details about seismic activity in earthquake prone regions around the world.

Man who predicts Earthquakes - Jim Berkland, Maverick Geologist -biography
by Cal Orey, Sentient Pub '06 Review - micheal sunanda Oness press

This book is charming & dramatic in language, vast in scope, very personal & accurate in reporting. Jim keeps Equake records of his `Syzygy' coorelations being Sun, full & new moon cycles of Equake clusters happening after many cats & dogs run away from homes. That natural data been observed in China for decades, but not reported to US much. Cal explains the politics around Jim & controversy still rejected by most geology now. Jim is open, careful & lucid telling of Equakes recent & historical. Even wild animals act weird or run away before Equakes, as many folks in northern California know. But government people are too worried & afraid about money & reputation to allow such a radical rebel to work for them predicting Equakes, makes'em look dumb, even if it saves damage & lives to know ahead & prepare.
I been hearing Jim on Coast to Coast am radio interview for 5 years now, So here I get to learn the details of his radical lifework around earthquake predictions. He has more honest integrity of any geologist I've ever heard or read. His observing & reporting natures cycles really inspired me to study earth science more about all earth changes causes & effects. Even him getting fired by his agency for publishing earthquake predictions is typical as it is absurd. But he continued his career research in patterns around earthquake wherever they happen & especially the precursors, not causes, but the signs of it coming soon. His Syzygy is 80-85% accurate predicting earthquakes. Jim's been tracking solunar cycles, ocean tides & animal behaviors & more coorelations to earthquake precursors
We read of other Equake predictors, sensitives to pre-quake rumbles, prophetic dreams & ESP. I've talked with 2 Equake sensitives who feel pre-quake vibrations as aches, pains & stress in their bodies, they've mapped according to body parts & earth regions. Cal probes the depths of the field. I like her referring to Rupert Sheldrake's work on morphic resonance & ESP of animals sensing invisible & farway things. If you want a deeper read on earth-quake dimensions this is it. Reading her is fun & profound at once, to realized how we're all connected with Mother earth. But animals seem more & sensitive & instinctual than most humans are. So we can learn about patterns with them, Like `where'd they go? Why running away? Is quake coming? When? Some causes of Equakes are still a mystery.

5 out of 5 stars James Berkland's Work Deserves Serious Attention!.......2006-10-09

I wrote the introduction to *The Man Who Predicts Earthquakes* because I believe that James Berkland's work on earthquake prediction deserves serious attention. Cal Orey's book provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of mysterious earthquake precursors and it offers a fascinating overview of James Berkland's colorful career as a maverick geologist. Berkland's adventures and explorations on the frontiers of scientific discovery will haunt conventional seismologists and intrigue open-minded students of unexplained phenomena.

5 out of 5 stars A big thank you to Cal and Jim Berkland !.......2006-10-05

Jim is one who refuses to follow the "normal" way of doing things, and I love that. Thanks to both of you I have found many more ways to enhance my forecasts at quakeprediction dot com! Not only does Cal cover Jim's ideas in detail, but she also gives the reader a great deal of earthquake information.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Is Yet To Be.......2006-09-19

I met Jim Berkland in 1998 and Cal Orey's book about him is a comprehensive look at his many years of work combined with earthquake prediction and is simply delightful. Berkland is a great humanitarian, spends much of his time in community events and wears his heart on his sleeves. Orey has brought to the readers of this book the true essence of this man we should all be proud to know. It is easy to forget that he was there for no less than 50 valid site specific predictions, he was there for us before Loma Prieta in October 1989 and Northridge in 1994. And I'm sure before the next moderate to large earthquake he'll be there once again looking out for our safety.
Kudos to author Cal Orey for her great writing. From securing great interviews, explaining the work of Jim Berkland and affording us the opportunity to know him and understand though he has fought long against a hard bitter wind, he has stood the test of time. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to come to know Jim Berkland, an extraordinary person and what earthquake prediction is about and his devotion to this effort.

Product Description

Originally published in 1963, this classic, single-volume history draws on Morison s definitive 15-volume History of United States Naval Operations in World War II. More than a condensation, The Two-Ocean War highlights the major components of the larger work: the preparation for war, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the long war of attrition between submarines and convoys in the Atlantic, the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, the long grind of Guadalcanal, the leapfrogging campaigns among the Pacific islands, the invasion of continental Europe, the blazes of glory at Leyte and Okinawa, and the final grudging surrender of the Japanese.

I read this book in preparation for a sea power class I was going to take in graduate school. The author has a well planned format for his work which keeps continuity by alternating Atlantic and Pacific theaters in accordance with the timeline of events. Morison covers the major battles in depth and mentions the minor skirmishes which are relevant to the big picture. By reading Two Ocean War, readers are able to better understand the course of events for naval forces during the war which are often overlook in favor of the `more popular' land battles.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy Synopsis of Naval Action in WWII.......2007-03-06

Having eyed Morison's 15-volume definitive history of the US Navy in the Second World War, I was delighted to find this out-of-print volume. This is a superb, broad overview capturing strategic sweep, political context and tactical insight. That said, in any work of this type, it will leave serious students wanting more.

A witness to many incidents, Morison is a candid primary resource in his assessment of brilliance, success, foolishness, opportunities missed, and naval personalities, revered and reviled, of all sides of the conflict. The author meets my "acid test" for works of history: readability; glossary to abbrevations and jargon; maps with careful explanations of movements, timing and action. The writing is clean with a hint of romanticism in summing up particularlly stirring events or actions.

If you seek an introductory knowledge of the naval war, or need to see the big picture, The Two-Ocean War is a nice one-volume start.

5 out of 5 stars I can see why its a classic.......2006-01-06

If all you want is facts you can read tables. So I like history books that not only tell you facts but keep you entertained.

This is a superb book that does this. You get a very good summary of the US navy during WW2 while being extremely well written so you think you are often reading a novel.

5 out of 5 stars Best concise, single book history of WWII Naval War.......2004-12-14

Admiral Morrison lived many of the events written of in his book. His telling of the tale is unequaled in any other single book, and is reflective of his much more extensive 15 volume set.

The research, the attention to detail and the commentary regarding the strategic and tactical importance of various battles and phases of the war at see is very well done indeed.

If the reader is not too familiar with the heroics, the savagery, the extents, or the sometimes very personal nature of war at sea , then The Two Ocean War is a must read. For that matter, for anyone wanting to get into the details of the epic warfare that raged at sea during World War II, start here. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A little too stripped down, but solid.......2002-05-21

I think you have to take it in the context that at the time there wasn't such a wealth of contemporary books, and there was a need for a summary like this. Fifty years later battle incidents like Savo Island have been discussed and analyzed to death, and reading this for the first time didn't grab my attention.

But give him credit for getting the analysis correct. He goes a little easy on Halsey at Leyte in my opinion (he likes him), but otherwise he doesn't spare stupidity at all, on our side or theirs. His dissection of Pearl Harbor should be required reading in history courses. I think most kids grow up thinking we lost that battle; I did, until reading books like this (now I would probably argue the Japanese pilots killed constituted the worst tactical damage done). The afterwords on the major battles are the best part of this book by far.

Also, I didn't find the book to be that objectionable when it comes to race. He uses offensive language when referring to the Japanese, but he keeps it in context. He also keeps the tone from being jingoistic; patriotic, yes, especially for the admiration of courage under American arms, but never ignoring the idiotic things some of our leaders did for the sake of not smearing the flag.

Very worthwhile, and sufficiently revealing of the author's talent that I will now invest in the multi-volume work. In that sense alone, just to give you a glimpse of what to expect, it's well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Broadsides Aplenty.......2001-08-31

If the "Two Ocean War" is any guide, Morrison's 15-volume series on the naval battles of WW2 must be a treat. Here is a writer of the old school, who fully expects an honorable loser to "go down with his ship," even if he characterizes this demise as the "cruel ritual of the Sea." More than one captain met that fate, especially in the early phases of the Pacific conflict. This is a splendidly told account of the Atlantic and Pacific conflicts, featuring U-boats, the Date That Will Live in Infamy, the Five Minutes at Midway, the Toyko Express, Island Hopping, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. An epic.

          Book Description

          "A blockbuster book . . . Just astounding."—Rush Limbaugh

          "Explosive . . . A methodical, well-thought-out, easy-to-read book . . . that will shock the average American."—Sean Hannity

In his explosive new book, New York Times bestselling author Bill Gertz uncovers the most significant threat to U.S. national security today: America’s enemies—including radical terrorist groups—are arming themselves with the world’s most dangerous weapons. And they’re doing it with the help of America’s supposed allies. Worst of all, the U.S. has let it all happen.

Using his unparalleled access to the U.S. intelligence and defense communities, Gertz names names, revealing which of our “friends” have placed greed over principle to make America’s enemies far more deadly and the world a far more dangerous place. In Treachery, Gertz tells the whole story, complete with previously unpublished classified intelligence documents, and based on dozens of exclusive interviews with senior U.S. officials, including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

          In shocking detail, Treachery exposes:

•How Iraqi insurgents are killing U.S. soldiers with weapons that France, Germany, and Russia sold them

•How the French and German governments turn a blind eye to arms sales to rogue regimes and terrorist states like Iran, Syria, and North Korea

•How intelligence reports show that China supplied arms to al Qaeda after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on America

•The real story of why Libya dismantled its nuclear program—how U.S. intelligence caught the Libyans red-handed trying to smuggle in nuclear weapons technology

•How Pakistan’s nuclear proliferation network is even more extensive than has been reported

•The CIA report revealing that al Qaeda is pursuing—and may already have—nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons

•The classified intelligence showing that Russia and France were cooperating with Saddam Hussein even after the 2003 Iraq war broke out

•The full story of how Saddam exploited the United Nations “oil for food” program, not only to line his own pockets but also to rebuild Iraq’s weapons and missile programs

•How U.S. security lapses have enabled our enemies to target Americans using our own weapons technology secrets

Only Bill Gertz has the contacts and the knowledge to tell the complete story of how France, Germany, Russia, China, and other countries have armed our enemies to the teeth. Treachery is also the definitive account of what the U.S. government is doing to counter the threat—and of how our leaders have too often failed us.

“Gertz is legendary among national security reporters for the quality of his sources...He is the envy of his competitors.”—Washington Monthly

“Treachery, with its reams of classified and other inside information, reveals how our nation’s enemies obtain weapons from China, Russia, France, Germany, and other supposed friends. The book is must-reading if you want to know the confidential story of the growing danger of global arms proliferation.”—Rowan Scarborough, Pentagon reporter, Washington Times, and bestselling author of Rumsfeld’s War

“Two big factors will determine America’s national security over the next twenty years. The first is the capability of our military systems as determined by the health of our defense industrial base. And, second, the extent to which our adversaries are able to buy or steal advanced military technology from the U.S. and our allies. Bill Gertz focuses superbly on the hemorrhaging of critical military technology to our enemies. Treachery should be read by all our policymakers."—Congressman Duncan Hunter of California, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee

“Bill Gertz has written a bone-chilling exposé about what has been done behind our backs. Can we ever be safe? You must read this.”—Greta Van Susteren, host of Fox News’s On the Record with Greta Van Susteren

“Bill Gertz gets it! Treachery brilliantly exposes our allies who have become our enemies in the War on Terror just because the U.N., France, Germany, and Russia looked at Iraq and other rogue states as trading partners rather than enablers of terrorism. This is a major piece of work in the War on Terror.”—Lt. Gen. Thomas G. McInerney, USAF (Ret.), bestselling author of Endgame

“[Gertz] has access to more intelligence information than anyone I know.”—Former Defense Secretary William S. Cohen

“The hottest reporter in town...He breaks dozens of big stories every year, and he’s read carefully by people who follow national security issues.”—Washington Post

“Bill Gertz remains a national asset.”—Weekly Standard

Let's get real folks, the idea that we should just go talk to these people is patently absurd and this book will corroborate that.

1 out of 5 stars Poor reporting or just propaganda........2007-02-21

When I started with this book, it read like biased, selectively researched 'facts', but when I finished a few chapters, it had crossed from bad reporting to outright political rhetoric. There are always two or more sides to a dispute, and this book presents a completely unbalanced one sided view of the issue, with large amounts of chest thuming, finger pointing and moralistic self righteous smooth talk thrown in.

For a more balanced view of the issue, pick up Hans Blix's "Disarming Iraq" where you'll find a far more objective analytical view presented in a clear no-nonsense fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Will make you fume.......2006-02-14

The French connection: How France was arming Iraq all the way up until we went to war. They have also helped other rogue states with "dual use equipment". And of course "Oil for Food".

Germany: They too have supplied Iraq and other rogue states with weapons and technology.

Russia: Probably the most dangerous weapons proliferate. Uncertainties of where the biological weapons have proliferated to. They have a long train of abuses.

North Korea: There goal for nuclear weapons. Not only arming itself but also nations like Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Pakistan, and India.

Iran goes nuclear: Also very energetic in their ballistic missile program.

China lies and deception: They sell everything to everyone. Endless broken promises.

Libya and Syria the new "axis of evil": Libya in search of nuclear weapons. Syria, supporter of terrorism and is developing nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

The United States proliferation negligence: The myth behind the U.S. rapid spread of deadly arms, especially Iraq. Americas security lapses.

The United Nations failures and appeasement.

The ultimate proliferation nightmare: To Islamist terrorists.

Treachery exposed, will make you fume

4 out of 5 stars Useful but Hypocritcal.......2006-01-11

Bill Gertz is a "thought leader" and what he has to say is always worth listening to or reading.

This book is absolutely first rate as far as it goes, in lambasting the French, the Germans, the Russians, China, Iran, North Korea, Libya, Syria, and the United Nations for their varied contributions to global instability and corruption.

However, the book is also hypocritical in ignoring the documented fact that the U.S. is by far the largest arms merchant and the biggest bully on the block. The book also ignores Israel and the 38+ dictators that the U.S. supports (there are actually 44 still left but six are included in this book).

A third of the book is an appendix of classified documents with a great deal blocked out, this is one of the author's signature features, but the bottom line is that the book is a very large Op-Ed. Worth buying and reading, absolutely spot on, but hypocritical and incomplete.

3 out of 5 stars Important Information to Prepare Us For the Future........2005-12-29

It's no secret that the United States aided Iraq during their war with Iran in the '80s in retaliation for the hostage situation in which Americans were held for 444 days in 1979, and the major need of oil facilities located in Iran. In the twelve years between the Persian Gulf War (called Desert Storm) and the 2003 Iraq war, Saddam Hussein flouted United Nations sanctions to show that his regime would not be held accountable to any international standard of behavior. The United Nations imposed sanctions on Iraq in 1991. "Many anti-American critics have accused the United States of building up Saddam's military in the 1980s, meaning that American forces went up against U.S. weapons technology in the 1991 Persian Gulf War." However, the Iraqi arsenal was mostly equipped with Russian, French, and Chinese weapons.

"In October 2003, federal prosecutors indicted an Iraqi-born father-and-son team from San Diego [California] for exporting six armored patrol boats to Saddam Hussein from November 2000 to July 2003. It was the first prosecution of U.S. arms brokers for selling goods to Saddam." The world has grown only more dangerous, not safer, since the Cold War ended more than a decade ago because of "the transfer of dangerous weapons and related technology -- the most significant threat to U.S. national security." Weapons proliferation is an on-going problem "to make the world a more dangerous place."

This book is the inside story of how America's supposed allies, as well as some of its foes, are secretly arming our enemies, and how in many cases the illicit-weapons deals have been going on for decades. "While many Americans have condemned nations like France and Germany for opposing the United States at the United Nations before the war in Iraq, the truth is that those actions do not even hint at their treachery." In the Appendix entitled, "Treachery Exposed," part of a Pentagon report shows that twenty-four nations had supplied armaments (weapons) to Saddam Hussein. About nineteen blank pages of declassified documents (Top Secret) about China, Russia, Pakistan, France and Bulgaria were deemed too sensitive to have in print for the world to read.

"The danger of weapons proliferation is growing, and the world needs to take note of how the most deadly weapons are available to regimes run by bloody dictators and to terrorist groups." Terrorism has plagued Iraq since the fall of Saddam. There have been more than thirty suicide bombings since September 2004; the bombers are usually religious fanatics, and the insurgent groups prefer to use foreigners, or "Arabs." Two weeks after the fall of Saddam's regime, he was still calling the shots, but not anymore. The fear is that these continuing suicide bombings will turn Iraq into another Afghanistan, with a Taliban-style government.

"The transfer of dangerous weapons and related technology is the most significant threat to U.S. national security for the foreseeable future." One major fallacy is that America has failed to protect its own military technology. "The war of words should be nothing less than the kind of ileological effort launched against expansionist Communism during the Cold War." The likelihood of suffering an attack from nuclear, chemical and biological weapons has never been higher. Terrorists pose the greatest threat to our national security. "Still, we must always remember that the situation today would not be so dangerous if it had not been for unconscionable weapon sales by some of our supposed allies. Their actions have been treacherous."

In the stunning New York Times bestseller Treachery, Bill Gertz blows the lid off the dirty dealings of our so-called allies. Gertz’s groundbreaking reporting exposes how France, Germany, Russia, and other “friends” of the United States have armed the world’s most dangerous tyrants and terrorists—putting Americans directly in the line of fire.

And in a brand-new chapter based on classified intelligence reports, Gertz documents how the treachery continues unchecked. Plus, for the first time ever, he reveals the complete story on what happened to Saddam Hussein’s weapons—a shocking account that will change the way you look at the dangers in the Middle East.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for several reasons.......2005-12-09

The author has a background and contacts in intelligence circles. This is information that is not only interesting, but should get out beyond the readers of this book. Gertz carefully details with a lot of specifics how Russia, China, Germany, France, North Korea, and more work together to supply rogue nations and terrorist groups with weaponry. This is a must read if you want to get a broad horizon on the threats of the world today. This is the kind of information you won't get in the news, because it's too granular and complicated for the average newspaper reader, or television audience.

          3 out of 5 stars This is a speach, not a study.......2005-09-24

This book reads like a national discourse rather than a political and security analysis. It is no secret that other nations are competing with the United States over diverging interests around the world. France and Russia had signed oil contracts with Saddam's Iraq prior to the American war in 2003 and it was only natural for them to stand up to defend their interests before the world community and in the UN.

I personally have no petty for such imperial competition. What is more alarming, however, is the proliferation of WMDs throughout the world (not Iraq) and the ongoing arming of rogue states as well as terrorist gangs thanks to the conflicting agenda of imperial states such as France, Russia and the US. What these nations should be doing, instead, is coordinating their efforts to make the world a safer place and - even while they maintain their conflict of interests - understand that arms are no toys and that there could be no settlement of imperial scores by letting gangs roam the world killing civilians.

Gertz, for his part, take Russia and France's activity as a personal offense, from an American perspective, instead of depicting it as an offense against humanity altogether. Such nationalist rhetoric never helps making the world a safer place but rather increases animosity among nations and widens the gaps in their opposing alignments.

            5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2005-09-28

I'm moving out of state next year and won't be taking my car with me. Life will probably be more difficult in some ways but it's worth it. When you read about cars and study about them and think about them, it's really unbelievable the amount of death, destruction, and suffering that they've caused over the last hundred years. I've read a lot of anti-car books and this is one of the better ones. It's very thorough while not being too dry or academic like some of the others. Read this book and you'll learn things that will surprise you, like how much money it really costs a society when it uses cars as its main form of transportation. And don't forget perhaps the greatest tragedy of all. Cars gave rise to one of the lowest forms of life that the human race has ever known - the car salesman!

            5 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2004-12-09

This book inspired me to bite the bullet and become car-lite (I live a little too far from town to achieve car-free just yet). It has a lot of exciting examples of how being car-free and car-lite can lead to a more pleasant lifestyle, as well as motivation why it's a good thing to do. Katie's own example is also inspiring, as she has significantly reduced car usage while living in a rural area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a place with legendary winters. Now when I get whiny about putting on my rain suit in the winter here in Northern California and want to jump in my car instead of riding, I think about Katie and her husband biking in the snow of the U.P.

4 out of 5 stars Methodical outline of problems and solutions.......2004-08-05

Divorce Your Car, by Katie Alvord, is thought provoking. In the United States of America, an automobile is many things to many people: transportation, status symbol, hobby, money pit. Alvord takes apart the place of the car in modern society (the focus of the book is on North America, though she does refer to Europe and the Third World in places) and roundly condemns our dependence.

Her book is split into three parts--the first covers the history of the automobile and other forms of transport. She legitimizes what I'd often heard and dismissed as a myth--the car industry bought up the transit systems of cities in the US early in the 20th century and replaced them with buses. The second is a laundry list of the negative effects of the car (which, I must confess, I didn't finish--too depressed after the first thirty pages). The final section covers alternatives, including walking, biking, mass transit, non-gasoline cars, and telecommuting.

I found the book to be quite good in outlining the problem and highlighting solutions. The dependence of modern life on the car is a dependence on convenience. But, to some extent, it's a matter of inertia. Automobiles are so prevalent and easy that many of us never try the alternatives, let alone use them in preference to our car. A strong point is that she realizes that car-free living isn't for anyone, and makes a point that going car-lite can have a positive effect as well. She also touches on the far reaching implications that technology decisions have had on our society, our cities and our lives--from subsidies to the development of advertising. It would have been interesting to read more about that, but what she did say was definitely thought provoking.

However, I do have three quibbles. Alvord cites sources extensively, but her arguments would be more compelling were the sources less biased (as you can tell by titles like Asphalt Nation) and more first hand. She ignores two factors that would affect my divorce. Giving up your car, or at the very least being aware of alternatives, makes drunk driving less likely--a good thing! On the other hand, if you don't have a car, you suddenly have a dearth of available camping and hiking activities. But these concerns aren't everyone's, to be sure.

Overall, a book well worth reading, especially if you commute a lot. Too bad they don't sell it as a book on tape!

5 out of 5 stars Save Time, Money & the Environment--Divorce Your Car!.......2004-04-21

Alvord makes a very convincing argument for divorcing your car. So convincing, in fact, that my husband and I will likely divorce our one and only car in the coming months.

Divorce Your Car explains the obvious--how divorcing your car will save money and help protect the environment. More intriguing, though, is the explanation of how divorcing your car will actually save you time.

How can divorcing your car save time, you wonder? Alvord factors in not just how long it takes to get somewhere (by car versus by other modes of transit), but also how much time you have to spend working to pay for all the costs associated with a car. When all is said and done, the car doesn't move any faster than a bike.

While Alvord does mention that walking and biking instead of driving have health benefits, her calculations of time don't include another big factor working against the car--making time for exercise. Many people complain that they don't have "time" for exercise. I used to complain about this too. But now that I bike virtually every day, making time for exercise is a non-issue. It may take me 20 minutes to bike somewhere I could get to by car in 10 minutes, and ditto for the return trip. But if I had to find another 40 minutes each day to exercise (plus time to drive to and from the gym!)...geez, no wonder I didn't used to have time to exercise.

By ditching the car, you can save enough money to work less (Alvord has some inspiring examples) and easily work exercise into your daily routine. As an added perk, you even get to help save the planet. What's not to like!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2004-04-13

I checked DIVORCE YOUR CAR out of our local library, because the title made me wonder how such a thing could be possible. I read the whole thing, and I was astounded at how simple it really is to use your car less.

The first two parts of the book cover the history of the car and the American "marriage" to it, as well as the reasons that same marriage has turned into a disaster. The third part then offers practical solutions for non-car travel, going into great detail about walking, biking, mass-transit, ride-sharing, etc, and providing plenty of information on the benefits, drawbacks and availability of each, as well as how to get in contact with alternative travel associations in your area, or how to start your own.

It's a slim volume, but the quality is evident. This book really woke me up to something MAJOR I could do to improve my own quality of life and the planet's. My fiance and I currently own one car between us, and though we've been doing alright with it, we'd been planning to buy another! After reading DIVORCE YOUR CAR, we're realizing we really don't need to have more than one, and we're now planning ways to use our bikes and mass transit more, and actively discouraging each other from taking trips we don't need to take by car. It's already making a big difference, and someday we hope to go entirely car-free, with this book (which I've since purchased from Amazon) and our creativity as guides.

Thank you, Katie Alvord, for such an excellent wake-up call!
