Book Description
This is Che Guevara's last diary, compiled from the notebooks found in his knapsack when he was captured by the Bolivian army in October 1967 and subsequently executed. It is the basis of a new biopic directed by Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean's Eleven) starring Benicio del Toro as Che.
Now revised by Che's widow (who originally transcribed the diary), this is the definitive account of the attempt to spark a continent-wide revolution in Latin America.
The story of the publication of The Bolivian Diary is itself a remarkable saga. Initially published as extracts by the CIA in order to discredit Che's guerrilla movement and to justify mass arrests in Bolivia and elsewhere, it was also used in the trial of Regis Debray and to suggest a romance between Che and Tania (the subject of Ulises Estrada's book Tania: Undercover with Che Guevara in Bolivia, published by Ocean Press in spring 2005), who will be portrayed by Franka Potente (Run Lola Run, The Bourne Supremacy) in Soderbergh's movie.
Features of this new edition include an insightful preface by Che's eldest son Camilo Guevara; a range of new materials such as photos, maps, documents, and a glossary prepared in collaboration with the Che Guevara Studies Center (Havana); as well as memoirs by guerrillas who fought with Che in Bolivia.
The Soderbergh movie about Che Guevara will be based on two new Ocean Press fall 2005 titles: The Bolivian Diary and Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War.

Book Description
World War I was the greatest cataclysm Europe had ever known, directly involving 61 million troops from 16 nations. The struggle mobilized manpower from home, troops from the colonies abroad, and--in most countries-women as well as men. Governments increasingly intervened in everyday life. New weapons and organizational structures were developed. Yet the history of the war and the reasons it started and spread so rapidly were vastly more complex than the players realized. Written by highly respected authorities, this book discusses the literature on all aspects of the war. Dennis Showalter's opening chapter covers the controversial issue of the war's origins--a complex subject that has been much debated by historians. Ensuing chapters consider the literature on each of the participating countries. The broader subjects of the war at sea and the war in the air are also covered. Daniel Beaver's final chapter discusses the mobilization of industry and the new military technology. This book is an excellent starting point for anyone seeking guidance to the immense, and often daunting, body of World War I literature.

Book Description
An eye-opening look at how the top media covers world news. Explores the pack mentality that drives reporters and how it distorts what we know about global news, economics, wars, human rights and more. Vividly illustrated with incisive anecdotes, it argues that while individual reporting is at its peak, the system is less reliable than ever. Analyzes coverage of recent hot spots such as Iran, Somalia and Eastern Europe. Features interviews with media stars.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding the news.......2001-01-17
For anyone who wishes to understand the process of news gathering, this book is the best available. I use it in all my international news classes at Scripps School of Journalism. Rosenblum extracts from his lifetime of journalism a clear, logical and comprehensive explanation of how the story you read got there, and what influences affected its selection and presentation at every stage of the process. It's also a fascinating and exciting read, by one of the world's most prolific and professional journalists. He introduces you to individual correspondents, both as individuals and as types. He explains how geography, economics and sheer prejudice can determine what you learn about the world. He tells great bar stories -- the kind of thing journalists tell each other over a beer. And he does it all with skill and style. Worth reading by anyone -- a must for anyone interested in news.
Speak up!.......2000-05-31
A great book. Even though it focuses primarily on american media, it's lesson can be applied in all parts of the world: We need to start making demands on the media, instead of letting it dictate what we need to know. An eye-opener.

Book Description
Explains the etymological origins of birds' English common names, along with scientific counterparts.
Customer Reviews:
Birds and Words.......2000-03-29
Ernest A. Choate's Dictionary of American Bird Names is a monument. It stands alone. There is nothing like it. It is indispensible for birders who wish to understand, and not merely know, the names and classes of birds. The dictionary offers etymological origins of every name as well as Latin and scientific counterparts. The book is ornamented with Thomas Bewick woodcuts. The jacket notes call the text "picturesque and richly anecdotal" and this is both true and understatement. Choate's dictionary has wit and authority in its linguistic details and in its fieldwork. The author is both a scholar and a birder and has managed to include mythic, historical, and common origins. Thus the book is not only a history of the names of American birds; it is a history of America. Included are a biographical appendix, a bibliography, and an English/Latin glossary. The book is sized to fit a pocket or backpack, and has been updated to reflect the changes made on the 1983 AOU Check-list. Peterson said "no informed birder should be without " this book. The truth is, rather, that no birder can be informed without it, and best of all, it is affordable, transportable, and a joy to read.

Book Description
This is the most complete and up-to-date dictionary of names of American birds available. With more than 900 entries, all the resident birds of the 50 states are included, as well as escaped, exotic, and rare visitors. Including the etymologies and meanings of scientific and common names, it will be an indispensable reference for both scholars and amateur birders. The dictionary is the only work of this type that brings the derivation of scientific bird names back to the original Greek. Other names are traced, for example, to Old English, French, Portuguese, or native languages. Names sometimes reflect the birds' behavior, physical appearance, habitat, or the sound of their calls. Some names refer back to ancient myths and local folklore or were bestowed to honor a great naturalist, a world traveler, or a patron of the sciences. The author also discusses errors that arose in the naming of some birds. Crisply written and extensively cross-referenced for ease of access, the book is graced by more than 25 striking pen-and-ink drawings by renowned ornithologist and bird artist George Miksch Sutton.
Customer Reviews:
Just another book on bird names?.......2006-10-04
A nice book with birds listed alphabetically by their scientific names. While James Jobling (Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names) offers an exhaustive explanation for ALL Latin bird names, therefore maybe a better pick to buy, if you want to get into details of vernacular names or interested in scientific names of North American birds only, than go for it. I found very soon some little mistakes or weak points (in the References section Jobling's name was misspelled; Streptopelia decaocto DOES have a call similar to the pronounciation of its species name; to my regret I did not find Middendorff's Grasshopper-Warbler on the list, etc.)but this is the only reason I gave only 4 stars to the book.
So is it just another book in this topic? If you already have a library on bird names you may not find much new in the book, although the b/w illustrations are still nice. On the other hand, if you are looking for the first or only book on American and scientific names in the Nearctic it is a well compiled book for the purpose. As a person keeping my eyes open for information on nomenclature and etymology of bird names I can also recommend to all those with a similar interest.
Hosting over 900 entries.......2004-02-09
A significant and core contribution to personal and professional ornithology reference collections, Joel Ellis Holloway's Dictionary Of Birds Of The U.S. is the most complete, updated dictionary of names of American birds available, hosting over 900 entries and including both resident birds and escaped and exotic visitors. Scholars and amateur birders receive a work which brings the derivation of scientific bird names back to original Greek and source languages, providing an important focus on both scientific and common name origins.

Gardener's Latin: A Lexicon
ASIN: 0688167799 |
Book Description
Sooner or later every gardener encounters a certain intriguing plant or species that is known by several different legitimate names. Which is the correct one to use, becomes the question. And this is where A Gardener's Latin comes to the rescue.
Without presupposing the knowledge of even "high school" Latin, this charming volume demystifies plant nomenclature. Key Latinate words are translated into English. Cumbersome names are rendered easy to pronounce, usually providing indications of the plant's normal habitat, flowering periods, leaf patterns, and all sorts of other useful information.
A Gardener's Latin is more reference tool than plain dictionary, with beautiful watercolor-collage illustrations. An introduction explains how plants are classified, then lists plants' names. Following pages focus on colors, flower and leaf shapes, fragrance, size, indigenous country, and so forth.
A thoughtful gift to tillers of the soil, A Gardener's Latinwill be well appreciated by novices and experts alike.

Book Description
This dictionary provides information on animal species and terminology concerning hunting and wildlife management. Basic to the whole book is a concern for reconciling hunting and wildlife conservation, the former being viewed as the wise exploitation of a valuable natural resource compatible with the practice of an enjoyable field sport, and the latter being viewed as active conservation as opposed to static preservation.
The first part includes lists of animal species (and subspecies) which can be considered "game" in a wide sense, i.e. not only those which are the object of direct exploitation by shooting or other forms of hunting, but also species of interest from the point of view of wildlife conservation in general, biological equilibrium or tourism (1,800 entries). These lists are arranged in systematic order for each main region of the world, including the oceans (sea mammals and sea-birds).
The second part of the dictionary presents for the first time in the international literature on wildlife and hunting, equivalents in all five languages (English, French, German, Dutch and Spanish) of terms concerning game and hunting, in use in countries with sometimes different contexts and practices, but largely similar traditions and philosophies of hunting and wildlife management. Terminology is given which relates to the main game animals and game birds (sex and age, parts of the body, reproduction, habits, feeding, trophies etc.), sporting arms and equipment, hounds and gun dogs, hunting methods including hunting with hounds and falconry, wildlife management, and game diseases (1,550 entries).
The book includes 13 drawings by the author and a bibliography listing some 200 references. It is arranged in systematic order with alphabetical indexes for each language: English, Latin, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, and Afrikaans and Kiswahili for species found in southern Africa and eastern Africa respectively.
This dictionary is of special value to zoologists and wildlife managers as well as to hunters, but also to non-specialists in the general public who are interested in wildlife from an intellectual, ethic and aesthetic point of view. It is also useful to suppliers of sporting arms and equipment and to veterinarians.
Customer Reviews:
Owing to its multilingual character the dictionary is good........1998-06-25
Unfortunatelly I had only a very short time to consult the dictionary in more detail, however it is known that the work on dictionaries needs a very high accuracy and exactness, and the dictionary in question is ranging, as to my opinion, among this type of dictionaries.
At the same time I would greatly appreciate providing me some relevant information concerning the disponibility of this dictionary for more time. I mean information about availability of the dictionary in libraries in Central European countries or neighbour-countries with the Czech Republic. Thanks.
