Terry Funk is the best Wrestler EVER!.......2007-10-07
I have always loved Terry Funk.I first seen him in ECW and he was byond a doubt my favorite.Little did I know then in years I would discover that not only did I realize why he was so popular and beloved, but why he is bar none THEE Best Wrestler of all time. His career spanded 40 years and through it he trailblazed a legacy of greatness with originality, charisma and gold around his waist. He set his sites to Japan and became a deity to the Japanese. He also fought in the bloodiest brutal of all matches consisting of glass, barbed wire, nails, thumbtacks, electricity and explosives.Terry would fight all over the world and for a 3 year run as NWA World Heavyweight Champion.Becoming an Actor and starring in blockbuster movies with Sylvester Stallone.HELL he's still is wrestling well in his 70's-crazy yo.But awesome as it gets.I don't want to spoil anything else, but these are facts I'm sure you know as I do.
This book is by far my most treasured piece of liturature. If you love Terry Funk like I do you'll be drooling as you absorb every detail in fresh perspective of his acounts of his life. Many out there consider Flair or Hogan the best there is,but I promise you when you read this book you'll realize that only Terry Funk can deservingly claim that distinction. And don't get me wrong I respect and admire both Flair and Hogan, but after I read this book you'll know for sure that Funk is not only the best,he is Wrestling.
I cannot stress enongh how wonderful this book is and that if you consider yourself a true Wrestling Fan then it's a requirement to read this book.Whiether it be ECW,NWA,WCW,WWE that you want to read about his experiences in you'll be so enlightened about him and the Wrestling Industry that it will always be with you.And especially about other Wrestlers he mentions in this book is just as entertaining and enlightening and Terry himself.
So,I highly,highly-HIGHLY recommend this book to true Wrestling Fans. You'll be amazed like I was about this great man and Professional Wresler.WOW!I just can't praising this ultiate legend enough and when you're finished with this book you'll realize that as well.
Long live the Funkner baby!
Funk vs Flair...Funk wins this match. .......2007-07-03
I read Ric Flair's book and really enjoyed it. A lot of people do not like it. I took it at face value...its Ric Flair's book...HELLO. He can write what he wants and he can/does glorify himself because its HIS BOOK. I had the feeling the story was a little onsided I know he wasn't an angel or a saint in the polictical world of wrasslin nor was he the victim in every circumstance that didn't go his way. He took time to slam folks like Bret and Foley for really no reason besides personal dislike and if you didn't know its his book. That part I didn't like but many deserving people got slammed like Jim Herd and Eric Bischoff. Slam them not Foley and Bret. But he credited a lot of good people as well.
ANYWAYS
Then I picked up the Funkers book. Totally different vibe. He tells an honest story from beginning until what I am sure is the very end of it. i have about 20 to 30 pages left. Outstanding read. He goes over many people and situations positive and negative and he credits the good people and situations while not passing the blame on others and making excuses. He probably is hard on one person himself when needed. Every bad situation wasn't a screw job. Also not as many politics in his book.
These are two different people totally. Jet Planes vs Horses , Limos vs Pintos. Who is the real life horsemen ?
I would like to go party with Ric Flair but I would want to learn the business from Terry Funk. This is a great book from a true legend.
LEGEND.......2007-05-09
Great book by one the all-time best.A must read for any true oldschool fan.
Excellent and insightful.......2007-04-16
Terry is pretty much uncensored and tells all about his life - this is a very good book. I never knew Terry thought Goldust was one of the best gimmicks WWF ever did - I must say I agree with him!
Worth Every Penny!!!.......2007-03-19
I picked up this book because of how Mick Foley has talked up Terry Funk in his previous two books (Have A Nice Day & Foley Is Good). I've become somewhat of a late Terry Funk fan thanks to Mick Foley. I've missed out on some of Terry's best days and best matches (notice to WWE - get moving on a Terry Funk dvd!) so I must admit to being weary heading into reading this book.
I was very pleasantly surprised. I was informed and more importantly, entertained by Terry Funk. He's a lot smarter than his wrestling personality leads you to believe. Also, like his protege Mick Foley, his morals show through in an industry known for a lack of morals at best. In one of the earlier chapters I was waiting in a car while shopping was being done and decided to read more of the book to pass the time. There was a funny part of the book that literally made me laugh out loud! Funk is funny as hell when he wants to be and there is a good amount of humor in this book.
I must admit there were things in the book that either went over my head or was about people/things I did not know about. For the most part, Terry did well to explain things a person like me (someone who didn't follow his career before recent years) could understand. Also, we got to hear his side of the friendship between him and Foley. I'd almost be willing to say this book should be recommended even if you aren't a wrestling fan. Like Foley's book it goes beyond the wrestler and brings you insight into the MAN himself. I am completely glad I bought this book. It took me away from the real world and my real life problems. I was absorbed by a man who loves wrestling, but loves his family even more. High praise to Terry Funk & co-writer Scott Williams!
P.S. - Special thanks to Mick Foley for talking so nicely about Funk in his books that he made me interested in Funk to buy this book and start following Terry's wrestling career.

Book Description
"A MUST READ . . . This book [is] one of the best on that war in Korea. . . . A wonderful account of common, decent men in desperate action."
--Leatherneck
During the early, uncertain days of the Korean War, World War II veteran and company lieutenant Joe Owen saw firsthand how the hastily assembled mix of some two hundred regulars and raw reservists hardened into a superb Marine rifle company known as Baker-One-Seven.
As comrades fell wounded and dead around them on the frozen slopes above Korea's infamous Chosin Reservoir, Baker-One-Seven's Marines triumphed against the relentless human-wave assaults of Chinese regulars and took part in the breakout that destroyed six to eight divisions of Chinese regulars. COLDER THAN HELL paints a vivid, frightening portrait of one of the most horrific infantry battles ever waged.
"Thoroughly gripping . . . The Chosin action is justly called epical; Lieutenant Owen tells the tale of the men who made it so."

Customer Reviews:
War is hell - in this case, Frozen Hell.......2007-03-17
Colder Than Hell helped me appreciate what our servicemen went through at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. My father served with the 1st Division Marines in the battle, and was a Purple Heart recipient. He died years later when I was very young and now I have an idea of what it was like.
The author starts off by talking about the 'guys' and their wives prior to being called up, and takes you through the entire battle. Regardless of where you stand on this war, there's no denying how brave these men were and the hell they went through. Semper Fi
"Band of Brothers," Korean Style..........2007-02-27
"Colder Than Hell," is a wonderful book. It's a combination memoir and history of one rifle company during one of the most horrendous periods of fighting during the Korean War.
Mr. Owen is a good writer and he tells the story of "Baker 1/7," with a strong, narrative flow. While much of his book relates his experience commanding the Weapons Platoon, he manages to tell the rest of the company's story. The result is a unit story worthy to stand alongside the best narratives of a small unit.
The reader will finish this book with a sense of awe of the men of the 1st Marine Division (not to mention the Army troops and other UN forces who marched alongside them) and horror of the frozen hell that the Chosin campaign was. That anyone survived it was amazing. That the 1st Marine Division not only maintained it's cohesiveness, but managed to destroy many CCF divisions and make it back to friendly lines with all it's equipment, not to mention its wounded and lastly its KIAs, is a miracle.
Mr. Owen is the perfect narrator for this story. He is modest, generous in giving credit and his admiration for all his fellow Marines knows no bounds. This book should be required reading for students of the Korean War and those who have an interest in the Chosin Resevoir in particular.
"Colder Than Hell," is a true classic of Korean War literature.
Truth is painful ........2007-02-19
Should be required reading for many of the gutless politicians of the
political LEFT ! As a Korean volunteer and veteran I appreciated the
author's credibility and his expressions of the normal interaction with
his squad members . It's a tough book but that's the job ! This case
was plaqued by McArthur level screwups . Unfortunately , Truman did not
know or remember his prior failures in the early years of WW II .
Good book for good young men . Fighting for our country is real and
personal ! I bought it for my grandson , a 1st Lt. in 82nd Airborne . Dick Jones
Cold Hard, Mean and True.......2006-04-03
You have a choice with this book. You can read it like an adventure story and be stunned by the thrilling story or you can read it like the true account it is of a horrible war. It is a stunning book. It is a must read. Forget the movies read this book. This author deserves a Pulitzer Prize for his account of Korea. He also deserves a medal.
Amazing tale, modest writing.......2006-03-15
As far as heroism goes Joe Owen and the men he served with are 5 stars plus. What they went through was so amazing that the story was an easy to read page turner and we are forever beholden to the sacrifices they made. I have read other first person narratives that I thought were better for writing craft but this is a book I would recommend for the close up view of this historical moment in Marine history.
Book Description
In years past, immigration into the United States was treated as a privilege, not a right to be granted automatically just by being able to make it to America's shoreline or borders. Today, however, the entire process of immigration has been drastically politicized by both major parties in Washington, D.C.; one party sees votes - the other, cheap labor. This is investigative journalist Jon Dougherty's probing look into how this indiscriminate immigration is tearing at the fabric of our culture and society. Interviewing Border Patrol agents, local residents, citizen-enforcement groups and even the immigrants themselves, Dougherty examines the implicit dangers of our reckless attitude toward admittance, showing how all American citizens, native-born and otherwise, are consequently threatened by welfare fraud, drug lords, and terrorism. This is the untold, unnerving true story about the social and political turmoil on the U.S.-Mexico border.

worth reading.......2007-03-28
If you haven't read many books on current immigration, this book is a good place to start. There are a number of stories of the actual people who are being harmed by immigration. There are also a lot of facts and figures. Even if you've read a few books on the subject, you'll still pick up lots of tidbits in this book.
If you haven't read anything but the mainstream media, you'll be wondering: what's all the fuss about? We've had immigration for years. The fuss is that immigration has changed:
U.S. citizens living near the border are routinely terrorized by vandalism, home invasions, robbery, destruction of property, etc.
U.S. law-enforcement men and women are attacked and sometimes murdered.
Terrorists are using the border for easy access.
Healthcare costs, taxes, and other expenses are being heaped on the American middle class to provide free services for illegal immigrants.
Illegals are taking jobs from America's less skilled citizens, such as Blacks and legitimate immigrants.
Both the author of this book and other books on the immigration problem seem baffled as to why such an outrageous problem is allowed to continue and why it is not reported in the mainstream media. To find the answer to this, read While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within. Solving the immigration problem will require more than pep talks or voting or urging of public officials.
Threat Yes!.......2007-03-24
After reading this book I come away with questions as to why Americans are devided. I mean is not illegal entry into this country seen as a bad thing? Too, too many Americans say "These people come here for a better life." Yes they do. But reality says you do not allow someone to move into your home uninvited. Even more you do not start to take people into your home when you are ill-equipped to care for those in your home. Unemployment amoung Black men, is three times the national rate. At the same time we are not going to improve the plight of the people who are already citizens but we then take pity on some people from outside, to try to look compassionate.
Well here is how we stop the flow. We enforce those laws already on the books, and we then add teeth to those law, and close all loopeholes. If as is widely reported they are here to do jobs Americans refuse to take, try paying a living wage. Besides, as cold as this may sound, if you as an individual who cannot feed and house yourself properly you have no business procreating in the first place.
These "Swiss Cheese" borders offer a terrorist an easy entry into the United States, and the terrorist know this. So learn Spanish, and blend right in. We have a habit of half doing our job anyway so this is no big. Of course too many bleeding hearts say this is not the point. So look at health care in America, and how the entry of illegal aliens have overburdened this system, which was faulty at best without the added burden of illegal peoples. Next that stupid law that says born here, makes you a citizen, is just plain stupid. Many illegal aliens come here pregnant just to gain a foot hold in this country, by having their babies here. Our education system is such a mess that we have to do something to stop this madness. We used to have music, art, and physical education, not to mention math, and science, but because we now have to pay for a bunch of people from mostly Mexico have made this impossible.
This is all eloquently laid out by this author, and how Wall Street likes it this way. It is that slave labor mentality we have yet to get over. And why not we as a nation have yet to solidly destroy the concept of sweat shop labor. People working for pennies a day. Blame it on WTO.
This author outlines the lack of safety, and the likelyhood of another 9/11. What are we going to do about it anyway. We refused to stop this disaster before. We ignored those who sounded the alarm before.
A government impotent, because of Wall Street where nothing means nothing but money. You as tax payers cannot get what you have paid for, a quality education for your children, because your government sees fit to spend this money on others. Not just those from of south of the border but there are a great many illegal people who come here from Europe, on vacation visas, and disappear into the populous, never to be heard of again. Never mind some of these people have criminal records, as do some of those from south of the border, and from nations where there is a totally inefficient means of keeping criminal records. So we know not who we have in our country.
The author warns we need to even to take a new look at legal immigration as well, not to mention refugee status. Who are we allowing into our country, and whose country is it anyway?
A good response to the Insanity on the Left.......2006-01-05
As a grandson of Asian immigrants(incarcerated in iternement camps no less) with fluency in Spanish I hardly fit the mold of the so called racists below that have also given this publication 5 stars. Yes I've visted Mexico extensively and have many friends and acquaintances from there. Yet I've come to the same conclusion as the book's author. WHY?
A-Ethics-Simply put Illegal is illegal. With this rationale we can also justify amnesty for narcotics users, prostitution and waive vehicular safety rules given the rationale that "there simply are too many vioaltors out there" or the infamous "these are victimless crimes" argument. If the law is amended to allow open borders then I'll be the first in line to support policy to match said new law. Until then this rationale harkens to a danegerous slippery-slope where anything can and often will be justified for a special interest(i.e illegals). It is both irrational and unethical to condone some illegal behavior(illegal immigration) while prohibiting others(speeding, jaywalking)
B-National bias. Many are quick to call any critic of "open borders" racist. If anything the opposing reality is the truth. IF we allow Mexico to send millions of their nationals over unfettered by our "silly" and "biased" immigration law then we should allow any other country to do the same. By not doing so we are treating Mexico as a special country in it's own class to the disadvantage of all other immigrants from ALL other countries of the world.Only if we put Mexico on a quota system like EVERY OTHER country can we have a legitimate bias-free immigration system.
C- Environmental/Fiscal Impact.- Not only must we face the real strain that the illegal population place upon our education/social service/criminal justice infrastucture we must consider the future effects of ALL additional offspring born in this country as a DIRECT result of illegal immigration today. People often wonder why cities like Los Angeles, Miami, and San Diego are morphing into a Blade Runner type dystopia. Put it this way folks todays problem will only grow EXPONENTIALLY if we do nothing. I could go on for another 1000 pages or so but I think any clear headed REALIST can paint the rest of this picture....
Lacks Structure.......2004-08-12
For several years now, I have enjoyed reading articles by Jon Dougherty on the internet. I have found his articles to be high quality, so naturally, I was expecting that same quality in this book. I hate writing a negative book review, but Dougherty needs to stick to writing articles. I found this book to be basically, a hodge podge of articles, with a noticable lack of basic structure.
Perhaps I follow the problems surrounding illegal immigration too closely, and living in south Texas, am more exposed to it that most Americans, but I can't say that I found any revealing content in this book. I'm sure someone not so closely involved with the problems of illegal immigration, might find the book most informative and enlightening. But even for those people, there are other much better books available. I find Michelle Malkin's Invasion, to top the list, followed by others such as The Congressional Politics of Immigration Reform, by Gimple and Edwards, or even Pat Buchanan's Death of the West.
Now that I have thouroughly trashed Dougherty's work, let me say, the book does contain a good bit of 5 - 10 paragraph accounts of some of the problems encountered by Border Patrol Officers, property owners living near the border, Mexican military incursions into the U.S. and a good deal of other related matter. I know it probably sounds like I hated this book, but I didn't. I just expected more from such a fine writer as Dougherty.
You may choose to purchase this book, and if you do, I hope you enjoy it and learn from it, but for me, I wish I had spent that money on one of the other books on my reading list.
typical journalist.......2004-06-21
This book is almost a joke, if not a disgrace. THe previous 5 star ratings of this book just show the real ignorance of people in this country. If any of you were to actually travel to mexico, let alone LIVE in mexico - you would see the truth behind border issues and immigration. This book portrays all mexicans as a bunch of criminals who illegally enter this "great" country and engage in nothing but criminal activity. All of which for the most part is not true.
The truth is that most of america's drug and violence problems are not caused by mexican immigrants - rather by AMERICANS; mostly those living in poverty themselves. all you have to do is read the stats.
This is typical of sensationalist journalism at its best. Also sheer ignorace at its best - not just of the author, but of the poeple who review this kind of jounralism with 5 stars.
Also - the pictures of the border in this book are nothing but a joke. Maybe in a few remote places there is still a wooden sign saying "do not cross". But, how about you photograph the truth? - the real border that runs all along mexico. THe one with barbed wire, and motion sensors. the one with jeeps patrolled with gunmen. How about you observe the racial profiling that goes on at the border. photograph the abuse of US customs people on commuters as they try and drive thru the border daily to get to LEGAL jobs in this country.
How about you also photograph the part of the border in Tijuana where coffins and crosses symbolize the number of YOUNG, if not innocent, lives LOST - lives merely trying to escape poverty in search of a better life
Truth also, is that america needs workers who are willing to work for 7 dollars an hour. Immigrants are not a bunch of animal criminals as most people make them out to be. Try reading some DECENT, INTELLECTUAL literature, about the economics of immigration.
this book reminds me of those tabloids you see in the super market - nothing but sensationalistic journalism with hideous photography thrown in between.
Book Description
The eastern savannas of war-ravaged Colombia, known as the llanos, are among the most brutal environments on Earth, an unlikely setting for one of the most hopeful environmental stories ever told. Here, more than twenty-five years ago, an intrepid visionary named Paolo Lugari set out to create a village that could sustain itself agriculturally, economically, and artistically. He reasoned that if a community could survive in the Colombian llanos, it would be possible to live anywhere. The new village was named after the graceful river terns common in the area, los gaviotas.
The early inhabitants of Gaviotas soon realized that if they wanted even basic necessities, they would need to be very resourceful. So they invented wind turbines that convert mild breezes into energy, super-efficient pumps that tap previously inaccessible sources of water, and solar kettles that sterilize drinking water using the furious heat of the tropical sun.
They even invented a rain forest! Two million pine trees planted as a renewable crop have unexpectedly allowed the rain forest to re-establish itself. Paolo Lugari and the Gaviotans, in their quest to create a model human habitat, serendipitously renewed an entire ecosystem. This is why Colombian author Gabriel GarcÃa Márquez has called Lugari as ÂThe Inventor of the World."

Must Read.......2007-03-15
This is an amazing story about an amazing REAL place... It is an obligated reading for all of those who care about sustainability and renewable energy and wonder whether there is an alternative for our society.
Read this and you will be full of hope and energy for action.
Engaging Style.......2006-04-04
This book shows people solving ecological problems as a community. Weisman engages the reader by showing the people involved, not only the ones with training in certain disciplines, but also natives with practical solutions for living in a Columbian village. Even the children got involved in problem solving in Gaviotos.
They have learned to live in a place where there are many dangers due to drug wars, yet their survival skills are exceptional.
I highly recommend this eye-opening book

Not DIY.......2005-03-14
The vision described in the book is inspiring and very hopeful. The idea is to use our ingenuity in ways directly adapted to our environment so that small towns can be self-sufficient. Along the way, very clever uses of wind and water are discovered and described. If the reader is looking for great general ideas or approaches, this book would be hard to beat. On the other hand, if you are a garage-tinkerer and would delight in building the clever devices described, this book is close but no cigar. The drawings offered in the book purposely omit the most important details required to fabricate the devices in a proper working form. If you are a tinkerer and want to build these "goodies," you have three options. In the U.S., you can e-mail with the "Sustainable Village" web site and get the plans (eventually---they are not quick in responding). You can contact the Gaviotas offices in Bogota, Colombia. You can, of course, also take the basic idea and think through the details for yourself. That could take longer and be a little more expensive---perhaps. If you primarily want the ideas and the inspiration, then buy the book, by all means. If you primarily want to tinker and build, go straight for the plans.
interesting.......2004-12-17
In 1998, journalist Alan Weisman collected and presented information about a little known, yet quite monumental, village known as Gaviotas. To get there, one must travel 16 hours by car from the nearest major Columbian city, Bogotá. Even then the path there is not a smooth one; rough, muddy roads and severe political unrest serve as some major barriers in getting to Gaviotas. So why then is such an arduous trip worth it; in essence, Gaviotas is yet another tiny village located in a generally uninhabitable region and possesses none of the modern modes of transportation or communication that we are accustomed to. While in a sense these aspects may be true of Gaviotas, it is also undeniable that this community holds as one of the most efficient, supportive, and thoughtful communities on the planet.
Started in 1971 by a group of Bogotá scientists, Gaviotas originally was created as a sort of scientific experiment, a reaction to the way things were - which clearly wasn't working. A Gaviotas saying goes "the real maturity in life is to realize your dreams" and the founders of Gaviotas did just that when they decided to create their own society. The harsh life and extreme poverty that had been rampant in developing urban areas paired with the blatant depletion of natural resources was enough to spark the idea that maybe there should be a change. Yet instead of trying to make changes in the system already in place, this group of determined individuals took on the radical notion of creating an entirely new, segregated, yet completely self-sufficient, place to live. And that is just what happened.
Wonderful, Inspiring, Hopeful!.......2003-05-06
It was one of the best books I've ever read.
Go get it right now!
