Customer Reviews:
Perhaps the Best Book on St. Padre Pio!.......2007-07-20
This is possibly the best book currently on the life of St. Padre Pio. It is very well researched and well written that you honestly get a true glimpse of the man in my opinion.
The book was written by a non-Catholic which can dispel some people's fears that the book is a fanatical work to boost the Padre Pio simply because of his faith.
After reading this book there is little way anyone can doubt the amazing activities which took place around this man. Jesus was surely using St. Padre Pio.
I highly recommend this book for religious and causal readers alike.
Much fine material but terrible editing.......2007-04-11
I just finished reading this book. Most of it was very well done, but the author who is non-Catholic had a bad habit of inserting irrelevant material relating to Martin Luther and other Protestant luminaries in order somehow to bridge the chasm between the holiness of St. Padre Pio and the religious experience of these other individuals. It all has the smell of an ecumenistic work, a suspicion given added weight by the liberal nature of the publishing company. St. Padre Pio was a great saint for modern times. Like all saints he loved all humanity, but his personal love for souls did not, in any way, include acceptance of the errors they espouse. It is inexplicable that this author, who apparently believes what he has written about the saint, did not at the end adjure the errors of Lutheranism and enter the Catholic fold.
Padre Pio:the True Story.......2007-02-08
I thoroughly enjoyed this very delightful and inspiratonal book. It was really very well written and I would recommend it to any reader interested in knowing about the saintly soul Padre Pio. I was not able to put the book down once I started reading it.I highly recommend it to any reader interested in knowing about a Christ-like man of the 20th century.
Excellent!.......2007-01-22
I was very pleased that even though it was the week before Christmas, I still received my purchase within three days of ordering it! Thank you for your quick service!
You can be from any religion and this book is great........2007-01-11
I got this book as a gift wanted to learn about this man that people talk about so much. You start to read this book and you can not let go, is very good. People may think that Saints have wings or dont have problems in this world and we learn that Padre Pio was a human, but a great human. If we can only try to be good and help people no matter what religion, color, or country we can make this a better world and Padre Pio made it better. This book make me think that we can all be good and that we have problems in this world but that we can make a difference in this world.
The book is very easy to read and I learn so much not only about Padre Pio but about the human sacrifice and the problems that we all have to deal. Big 5 Stars for this book.

biography of Confederate general in Western theater of War.......2004-12-26
The solid military biography follows Bell's advance in the Confederate Army from captain of a company of Tennessee Volunteers to brigadier general who was regarded as Nathan Forrest's "right arm." Bell's own exceptional military capabilities and leadership have been largely overshadowed by being a part of the exploits of the better-known and more colorful Forrest. But Hughes, author of previous books on lesser-known aspects and figures of the Confederate military, demonstrates these qualities of Bell by detailing activities such a troop placements, probing maneuvers, assaults and defenses, terrain, and the involvement of key officers of the opposing sides in numerous engagements of all sizes Bell was involved in. Bell was active mostly in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi. The biography has a personal touch concerning Bell with the participation of Moretti and Browne, descendants of his. The journeyman military biography not only establishes the place of Bell in the military activities of the Confederacy in an area of its western theater, but is also an account of the conflict in this area.

Book Description
When the red states trumped the blue states in the 2004 presidential election, many Democrats were left wondering just what makes the conservative mindset tick. Wonder no more. Join self-described "infiltration journalist" Harmon Leon as he goes undercover to explore what being conservative really means. A flaming liberal in real life, Leon has been called "a cross between Michael Moore and South Park." He shares with readers his hilarious misadventures as he dons the persona of a "pissed-off convenience store clerk" at the Knob Creek Biannual Machine Gun Shoot in Bullit County, Kentucky. Next, he's working security in southern California at an "Arnold for Governor" rally, where he has several memorable encounters with the Terminator himselfand finds himself constantly promoted! But this is only the beginning. Leon paints on temporary tattoos, wears a black T-shirt reading "Kill `em all. Let God sort `em out!" and then entertainingly describes the reactions he gets when he tries to purchase a condominium in an exclusive gated community. Uncertain about whether his inspiration is Jane Goodall or journalist John Howard Griffin, author of the 1950s' classic Black Like Me, Leon nonetheless perseveres from one adventure to the next, hoping not to be found out and get his head broken. Leon's daring anthropological romps into finding out how the other half lives are by turns outrageous, disturbing, and hilarious, yet always illuminating. Don't be surprised to find yourself laughing out loud as you turn each page!

Republican Like Me is THE Great American Novel .......2006-05-26
I drive big rig trucks across this great nation and have alot of free time to read. I can tell you this is an amazingly funny book about real american culture AND I've seen it all! Buy this one next time you go on a vacation or a business trip. You'll laugh out loud from front to back cover.
somebody get this guy a tv show.......2006-03-16
I need my Al Franken and Michael Moore to be a little younger and edgier, so I thought this might be the guy. He's pretty funny and cool, but I think his stuff would translate better to television or film. Not that he's a bad writer--I giggled out loud a few times while reading this on a plane, especially when he's describing the job he did dressing up as Uncle Sam for a tax company. But the whole time I was laughing because I was imagining how the scene must have looked.
The first chapter on meeting white supremacists at Appleby's is pretty funny--Appleby's antiseptic atmosphere of simulated family togetherness seems like the perfect setting for meeting white supremacists who just look like office guys, soccer moms, and dumpy college students. The chapter on volunteering for Arnold's governor campaign was also pretty funny. He really shows how the people who work for Republicans at the grass-roots are just pathetic and lame losers who are pissed because they'll never get laid, like mini Karl Roves or something. Then again, most fascists are just "little men," as Wilhelm Reich called them.
It's Satire!!!!!!.......2006-02-23
Republican Like Me: Infiltrating Red States, White Ass, and Blue Suits is sooooooo obviously satire. Satire means a literary work in which vice or folly is attacked through inrony, derision, or wit.
Even the title is a satirical off of the John Howard Griffin book, Black Like Me. You'd have to be a complete idiot to think the two books would be the same in approach. Look at the cover!
It's a naked guy with a flag covering his privates. It's meant to be humor and satire. Do you get it now?
In Republican LIke Me, Leon takes a partisan turn as he goes under cover to see what makes conservatives tick. If you like humor mixed with edgy writing and politics, this book will keep you laughing and scratching your head at the same time.
Remember, it's satire!
Unintentionally Ironic Title.......2006-02-22
I think it's fine to satirize people to whom you consider yourself superior, as Harmon Leon does in this book. But I think he's chosen a misleading title here, one that is unintentionally ironic as it shows just how deep his hatred of the Republican "other" runs while it refers to a book that was intended to actually increase understanding of the other and overcome hate.
"Black Like Me," which "Republican Like Me" references, was the story of a white man in the South who posed as a black man so that he could better understand other people's points of view. The result is enlightening (for its time): all his prejudices about blacks are turned on their head, as are his assumptions about white benevolence.
Leon's purpose is the opposite. Where John Howard Griffin (the author of Black Like Me) posed as something he was not in a region dominated by people like him, Leon poses as something he is not in a region dominated by people UNlike him. The results are unsurprisingly unenlightening: all his prejudices about Republicans are confirmed. If he wanted to walk in Griffin's footsteps, he would have posed as a Republican in the Blue States, and thus embark on a self-education about how "his" people are unfair to others.
Essentially, Leon's book is a hatchet job on people he hates, where Griffin's book was an attempt to overcome hatred. Hatchet jobs have their place -- this book is funny, no question, and will no doubt be read and enjoyed by many people who already agree with everything Leon thinks and are looking for someone to confirm their views and avoid challenging them. But that doesn't change the fact that it was a bad move for Leon to compare his book to one that actually sought (and succeeded, to some degree) in improving understanding and repairing strained social relations in our country. Leon's book does not profit by this comparison.
Tell 'em how it is, Harmon!.......2006-01-27
I really loved the wit, sarcasm and charm of this book. Harmon took an idea I always thought would be good and actually did it...he infiltrates the Republican party by becoming one! He meets with bigots, young advocates, Southerners, and also makes a mockery of the Governator (Arrrrrrnold!). While he obviously takes a stand against the GOP, he also rips of the Democrats' way of doing things. It's fairly liberal but not "commie" as some of the GOPers might call it. Definitely a read for liberals, Democrats, independents, leftists, communists, progressives and so forth!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Demonstration of the Naturalist Mind.......2005-08-23
I am always on the lookout for books that demonstrate a naturalist's mind to my students. I have often used May Watt's Reading the Landscape of America, which is still a classic in the genre. This semester I will be using The Trees in My Forest.
It is nothing short of a pleasure to follow Heinrich as he muses on the trees, their guests, their prey and their admirers in his forest. Heinrich takes the reader into the mystery of puzzling about why something happens one way and not another, suggesting possible answers where he has them, admitting his befuddlement when he doesn't. All aspects of tree life in the forest are covered, from seeding and germination to damage and decomposition. All attendant forms of life, from mycorrhizae to humans, are woven into the picture as well. The book also contains beautiful color sketches of various buds, leaves, fruits, twigs and fungi.
If you were ever looking for a smooth and pleasurable introduction to forest ecology - or just a good read about a good mind/heart still climbing trees many years after his boyhood, this is the place to turn.
Very entertaining-- different from others in the genre.......2004-10-18
Heinrich has devoted an entire book to the acres of forest surrounding his home, examining them from a variety of different viewpoints and extrapolating from them in order to impart information about trees and forests everywhere.
Writing:
I found this to be a very interesting book, with Heinrich's ongoing experiments and insightful observations taking center stage. His insertion of self into the story of the woods is distracting, except for when he relates his actual activities impacting the forest. To clarify: I want to hear how he makes his forest an economically beneficial entity by planting and culling trees, but I don't want to hear about a moonlit trek through the forest on snowshoes for the sole purpose of stringing together a bunch of pretty adjectives on the off chance that he will engender compliments as to his literary talents.
What I learned:
A lot about trees, of course. One thing that was of particular interest was the way that trees grow to cope with their immediate environs. For example, a tree will point its branches upward so that ice won't form near the tips, and thereby rip the branch from the tree through sheer weight. The tree doesn't do this on purpose, of course, but any poorly-designed branches are ripped out over time, so you wind up with a tree perfectly suited for its particular locale. Another interesting bit of news was the way that trees develop a symbiotic relationship with certain species of insects, such as ants. The ants can eat a minimal amount of foliage without really hurting the tree, and the tree in turn is guarded by the ants from other, more harmful browsers.
Trees are people too!.......2004-10-12
If you love books about wild animals and wish that someone would write about trees, this book is for you. Heinrich takes you to his forest in Maine and explores the trees in it. Some have personalities, and they live as part of a community of trees, animals and sometimes people.
Heinrich writes well, as readers of his other books know. Again, his natural curiosity shines through, as does his storytelling and teaching abilities.
The book includes a wonderful set of drawings by Heinrich. Unfortunately, most of them aren't discussed in the text so it's hard to know what to make of them.
Much as I enjoyed the book, I wish that Heinrich had spent some time on tree identification. It would be much easier for me to observe the trees in my forest -- if I had a forest -- if I knew all their names.
Those criticisms aside, this was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I also came away with an understanding of how a true forest differs from the monoculture tree farms that are taking over parts of our country. While he walks us through his experiences trying to maintain a forest, he also provides lessons in sustainable forestry.
Meanders a bit, but otherwise very good.......2001-12-08
Imagine combining the wisdom of a trained naturalist with the heart of a caretaker - a healthy love and respect for trees on one hand and a trained eye for and the knowledge of how and why a forest operates on the other. Now throw in a large patch of land that serves as a giant laboratory, playground and limitless teacher and you have a cool concept.
"The Trees in My Forest" is like a series of informative, meandering walks through the woods with a wise, old Grandfather. From the mostly misunderstood and much maligned fungi which recycle tree roots into soil fo new trees to grow, to the structures which allow some trees to grwo to the top of the forest canopy and others which survive at only a few inches off the ground, the mystery of trees amd forests are opened up.
Much like Tom Brown, Jr. did for impressions in the ground in his playground in the New Jersey Pine Barrens in "The Tracker", Bernd Heinrich does for trees in the forests of Maine. I don't like it as much as Brown's Tracker series, in part because it occassionally loses me on the trail. Still, an interesting (if difficult to follow, sometimes) tale.
An inspiring book.......2000-10-28
I enjoyed every chapter and I especially appreciated the author's hand drawn illustrations. I also learned a lot about how forests develop and the importance of biological diversity. I think that I will now see a lot more when I walk in forest. Like the other reviewer, I feel inspired to acquire some acres of logged out land up North and let the forest grow!
