    Book Description

I was told I had cancer and that I must expect to die soon. Almost eight years later I still do my job and enjoy life. I have not had conventional treatment. Did my cancer simply disappear? Did I do nothing? Far from it. A number of things happened, some by accident, most by design.

Michael Gearin-Tosh is diagnosed with cancer at the age of fifty-four. The doctors urge immediate treatment. He refuses. Intuitively, not on the basis of reason. But as the days pass, Gearin-Tosh falls back on his habits as a scholar of literature. He begins to probe the experts' words and the meaning behind medical phrases. He tries to relate what each doctor says -- and does not say -- to the doctor's own temperament. And the more questions he asks, the more adamant his refusal to be hurried to treatment.

The delay is a high-risk gamble. He listens to much advice, especially that of three women friends, each with a different point of view, one a doctor. They challenge him. They challenge medical advice. They challenge one another. On no occasion do they speak with one voice. He also turns to unexpected guides within his own memory and in the authors he loves, from Shakespeare and Chekhov to Jean Renoir, Arthur Miller, and Václav Havel.

In the end, he chooses not to have chemotherapy but to combat his cancer largely through nutrition, vitamin supplements, an ancient Chinese breathing exercise with imaginative visualizations, and acupuncture.

No how-to book or prescriptive health guide, Living Proof is a celebration of human existence and friendship, a story of how a man steers through conflicting advice, between depression and seemingly inescapable rationalism, between the medicine he rejects and the doctors he honors.

Clear-eyed and unflinching, Gearin-Tosh even includes his own medical history, "The Case of the .005% Survivor"; explores general questions about cancer; and examines the role of individual temperament on medical attitudes, the choice of treatments, and, of course, survival.

      Book Description

In the summer of 1943 the German army stood poised for a major offensive. The attack was aimed at the Kursk salient, which the Germans intended to isolate, trapping large numbers of Russian troops and paving the way for the decisive campaign to knock the Soviet Union out of the war. Warned of the imminent attack by good intelligence, the Russians had turned the salient into a mass of strong defensive positions. In the decisive clash that followed, the Soviets bled German forces white. The counter-offensive that followed began an advance that would end in the ruins of Berlin. After the successful battles around Kharkov in early 1943, the German army stood poised for a major offensive in the summer of 1943. This attack was aimed at the Kursk salient, a large bulge in the front that the Germans intended to pinch off, thus trapping large numbers of Russian troops and breaking the front open for the decisive campaign to knock the Soviet Union out of the war. Soviet intelligence was well aware of German intentions however, and the Red Army had turned the salient into a mass of defensive positions. In the decisive clash of steel that followed, the Soviets bled Germany's vital Panzer forces white and finally took the initiative. The counter-offensive that followed began an advance that would finally end in the ruins of Berlin. This then, was the deciding confrontation of World War II. Mark Healy details the individual actions that took place and explains why Stalin and Zhukov were prepared to lose 50% of the Soviet tank force in this encounter. He also examines the reasons for the German defeat in spite of the fact that they had a technological edge over their opponents for the first time since the beginning of Operation "Barbarossa." Furthermore, not only are the armored forces of each side investigated, but air power and the role that this played in the battle is also looked at in this wonderfully detailed title.

5 out of 5 stars A real gem of historical synopsis about possibly the most important battle of them all.......2006-09-20

I suppose it kind of depends whether one is a seasoned historian with degrees, an Eastern Front expert, or an amateur student of history merely interested in the material. I am the latter, and I can say without any reservation that this book is absolutely outstanding, for its brief format a fantastic chronicle of one of the greatest battles of all time. In its bare bones, the book is an excellent record of the various operational moves of the forces involved in the Battle of Kursk. If you want to know who did what and when, this is the book to get. This is especially true if, like me, one is a novice to the history of the battle. The Battle of Kursk was a colossal struggle, an extremely complex battle and one not easily comprehensible, between enormous army groups striking each other in a nexus of small villages and winding rivers, which are not in the immediate knowledge base of the average history buff. Healy presents the tactical blueprint and chronology of the battle seamlessly and flawlessly, so that the ordinary reader with a minimum of knowledge about the Eastern Front can readily comprehend the intricate and interconnecting web of thrust and parry between huge Wehrmacht and Soviet forces. Moreover, I must take the opportunity to commend unreservedly the spectacular force distribution maps, which present the various forces making their assaults and defenses over the unfamiliar geography and facilitate as nothing else a true understanding of the battle. Healy also presents decisive "battles inside the battle" in 3-D full color physical maps which emphasize in the reader's memory the vital lynchpin engagements within this mammoth struggle which ultimately helped determine its final outcome--such as the fights for Cherkasskoye, Ponyri, and of course the final denouement at Prokhorovka. I've heard criticism of this book state that Healy uncovers no new information about the battle and only parrots secondhand sources. To be honest, however, I must confess that I can't see how any true student of the Eastern Front or the Second World War could afford not to own it. This is because the book does such a superb job in helping the average reader like myself understand the complicated contest of move and countermove(the Germans did most of the moving while the Russians remained static for the most part) that composed this monumental battle. Healy is not lacking in tactical insight, either--he describes the different tactical approaches of Model and Manstein in their operational assault plans, and describes also the strengths and weaknesses(particularly Vatutin's) of the Russian force dispositions in the salient. He also does an excellent job in placing the Kursk battle within the entire context of the Eastern Front in summer 1943, and describes how German strategic thinking first posited the Kursk battle as a local offensive designed to deal the Soviets a decisive blow which would decimate their strength and demolish the offensive capacity of the Red Army for perhaps the rest of the war. The Germans would then have the free hand to go for the win on the Eastern front or opt for a defensive standoff which would end in a negotiated peace. Healy then explains how this concept of the Kursk offensive in the German mind gathered an irresistible and cataclysmic momentum of its own, sucking in entire army groups and practically two-thirds of the entire Ostheer so that in the end, the whole fate of Barbarossa and even the Second World War would be decided in the salient. I feel that this book, although perhaps not shedding any new information about the battle, nevertheless is a superb work, especially for the novice to the history of the Eastern Front; it facilitates a true understanding of Kursk in depth and some detail, and indeed performs that task, I believe, better than any work in the field yet published.

2 out of 5 stars Useful (barely) only for wargaming.......2004-07-14

Healy's book is like most others in the Osprey series: it is a bland, uneven overview of the battle, and contains several important errors. Healy includes some "thumbnail sketches" of the German and Soviet commanders (including the erroneous assertion that Zhukov was undefeated). He also includes a broad overview of the forces involved, offering much more detail for German units than Russian (indicating a lack of effort on Healy's part to do research). The description of the battle is so brief that many of the important features (the German lack of infantry, the Soviet elastic defense, the German decisions during the battle, and the Soviet counteroffensive on the flanks) go untouched. The reader thus gets a very narrow perspective, which is even more focused by the highlighting of three clashes (at Ponyri on the north face, the Grossdeutschland break-in with its ill-fated Panthers, and the clash at Prokhorovka). The rest of the battle of Kursk gets very short shrift, and thus the three highlighted battles are completely without context. Further, it is apparent that Healy relied on Caidin's "The Tigers are Burning" to describe the events at Prokhorovka, and much of the information provided is thus incorrect. This causes a curious contradiction, as Healy correctly identifies tank strengths for the Germans early in the book, yet massively overstates those strengths later.

Despite these problems, the "3D" maps that are the selling point of this series are quite good. Further, my comments above may not be completely fair, as this book (and the series as a whole) is aimed at wargamers. For the purposes of setting up scenarios and games of the three highlighted battles, the book will do an adequate job. The 3D maps will provide information for creating a battlefield on the tabletop, and the orders of battles will provide opposing forces to "duke it out". Beyond this, however, the book is of marginal utility, and wargamers should not rely on it to provide historical information and analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Great telling of events.......2002-06-06

I received this book today and was extremely satisfied with how it describes the battle. Much more than I anticipated is revealed with the turn of each page. Data tables are precise and maps flawless. Especially interesting was the fact the Tigers of Army Detachment Kempf were unable to reach Prohkorovka to help in the outcome. Also, how strong the Soviet defences were and how minefields took a terrible toll on the panzers and just how costly the campain was to both sides.

      5 out of 5 stars Compelling History.......2002-05-29

Kursk 1943 : Tide Turns in the East (Osprey Military Campaign Series, No 16) by Mark Healy is a fine short history of one of the critical battles on the Russian front.. Healy's writing keeps the reader centered on the battle and the whys and therefores. What is the strongest part of the book is the discussion of what each participant knew and didn't know. For instance, a critical failure of the Nazi offensive was their failure to realize the depth of the Russian defenses.

Healy's lead up to the battle is compelling. The conflict between the suggested strategy by the German generals of a mobile defense and Hitler's Operation Citadel is another example of Hitler's imposed "strategy" losing the war for the Germans.

This is one of the better books in the Osprey Military Campaign Series. The maps are excellent and after the book is finished one has an appreciation of the climatic battle.

4 out of 5 stars The greatest tank battle.......2000-06-12

Another fine publication from Osprey, this one is a concise coverage of the battle of the Kursk salient. Strategy of the German offense and the Russian defense are detailed, and colorful "3-D" battle maps are provided for every step of the campaign. There are bios of leaders, archival photos, descriptions of equipment, and color plates of military uniforms and hardware. Kursk has in the past been defined as a German loss rather than a Russian success. Osprey presents it as a definitive Soviet victory, critical to the outcome of the War.

IN A NUTSHELL: PRESENTED IN A MOST VISUAL MANNER TO AID UNDERSTANDING

Most everything that has a bearing on understanding this enormous battle is enumerated, mapped, graphed and/or illustrated, making this relatively-small book read like a sort of PBS-TV documentary.

THE 1st Chapter ["The Origins of the Battle"] STARTS OUT WITH A MAP OF THE "KURSK SALIENT" followed by a description of the current situation and a discussion of the origins of the battle -- or, more to the point, WHY HERE AND WHY NOW?

The 2nd Chapter ["The Opposing Commanders"] gives brief biographies with pictures of the commanding officers on both sides. This background information aids understanding of some of the actions taken and orders given later when the battle seemed difficult to comprehend.

The 3rd Chapter ["The Opposing Armies"] details the men and machines that were to fight at Kursk. This includes a comparson of the armor and tanks and the Luftwaffe too. Charts and illustrations are used.

The 4th Chapter ["Plans and Preparations"] presents the aims of both armies. Obviously, the Soviet goals and objectives were different than the German. Perhaps, more importantly, the Soviets had a much better grasp of the current situation than the Germans. As a result, they were better prepared for the unexpected contingencies of the battle. This chapter clearly shows how the Germans made a number of errors in judgment, not the least of which was to depend so heavily on a untested tank [the Panther] which still needed some time to work out its kinks. True, the Panther tank was probably the most-advanced and most-formidable medium tank of World War II, but at Kursk, it was to suffer defeat in greater numbers from mechanical failures rather than by Soviet attacks.

The 5th Chapter ["The Battle"] takes up more than half the book. Maps are constantly used to pinpoint the action and the re-actions, which were almost too numerous to track. We are shown where and when strategic actions occurred which greatly impacted both the outcome of the battle and the war. There are numerous battles within the "Battle of Kursk," and many of these are itemized as accurately and comprehensively as possible for an Eastern Front campaign.

In the end, the German losses were greater than the Soviet losses. So began the final battle of attrition for the Third Reich. Just how Operation "Citadel" turned against the Germans is precisely and concisely what this book addresses. In my opinion, the conciseness of this text along with the very helpful graphics make this book a 5-Star pick for anyone interested in the reasons for the outcome of World War II, and particularly in the details of the clash between the Soviet Union and the Third Reich.

This book is a wonderful read! If you are not from the Northeast and don't know much on the Ivy Leagues and their past, it's a great book to get an understanding on the subject. Somewhat Cloak & Daggar, but very intersting indeed!

2 out of 5 stars Just as others said - quite the disappointment..........2007-05-29

I was looking for some interesting insight but found very little in this book. It provides the basics of the society and what I'm sure is public knowledge but no insider information... Generally disappointing.

2 out of 5 stars Either a fantastic work of disinformation, or an incredibly boring read.......2007-05-07

This book is either great or awful. Great if my longshot hunch is true: Alexandra (herself a secret society member) merely leads readers off the path and convinces them that there really is nothing to Skull and Bones. Awful if this is the real boring truth of the club. If it is the truth, then it doesn't really warrant a full book. A mere few pages stating: Skull and Bones: an average fraternity that happened to survive for many many years and have a few third-tier Presidents, sleazy CIA agents, and a handful of Congressman.
Is the book believable? Who knows.
I'd like a book written by a true outsider, and not someone who attended Yale herself as well as joined a secret society.
I say its a coin-flip: the society is either incredibly boring as this book attempts to tell you, or this book is just what they want you to believe. Either way, its dull and a very slow read.

Maybe the only way i will know for sure is if i disappear and my bank accounts are frozen after i post this...

4 out of 5 stars Can you trust a 322 and Scroll and Key collaboration? .......2007-04-22

There is a lot of interesting stuff in this but you have to ask yourself how much the information in it can be trusted because for one the author gets a good portion of it from anonymous Skull & Bones members who talked because they claimed they were tired of hearing so much weird speculation about them. So for one, how can you be sure what they told her was accurate and not intentional disinformation. For another even if what they gave her was true, its still information that they chose to let out but not the whole story. Another big factor that has to make you wonder is it turns out that the woman who wrote Secrets of the Tomb was her self a member of another elitist secret society at Yale, Scroll & Key.

This book is worth reading if your researching S & B but you just have to wonder how honest it is. The best book on the Skull & Bones is Fleshing Out Skull & Bones which was edited by Kris Millegan. Antony Suttons work on the 322 cabal is also highly recomended.

3 out of 5 stars Not the revelation I expected.......2007-03-09

While this book was reasonably entertaining and readable, it tended to get repetitious and did not deliver the "secrets" as advertised. The underlying consipracies were only old school bonds that anyone could expect from a frat house.

                    Book Description

Global warming, acid rain, the depletion of forests, the polluting of our atmosphere and oceans--the threats to our environment are numerous, raising justifiable concern among most of us and genuine alarm in some. But as scientist Daniel Botkin argues in this provocative book, our ability to solve these problems is limited--not by our scientific knowledge--but by the age-old myths and metaphors that shape our perception of the natural world. Indeed, our beliefs about nature have fallen well behind our knowledge. Daniel Botkin is a seasoned scientist. He has spent three decades in the field studying the changes and interactions of forests and animal species. In the 1970s he pioneered the use of computers to predict ecological trends. Now, in Discordant Harmonies, he combines his considerable expertise with the well-honed eye of the nature writer and a philosopher's sense of how ideas shape our perceptions of reality to take us on a marvelous guided tour of the natural world. His method is to introduce a problem in our beliefs about nature by giving us a fascinating case study: of predator-prey relationships, of forests evolving over centuries, of species nearing extinction, of the ways our "protection" of nature has had surprising--and often disappointing--results. Botkin's revealing case studies also highlight controversial present-day issues--like controlled burning in national forests, fishing and hunting quotas, and policy-making for management of natural resources. He looks at each of these cases in the light of past thinking and current research, revealing how old myths often blind us to the new technology and to the ways of thinking we need to solve our environmental problems. Above all, Botkin is concerned with redefining the relationship between human beings and nature, so that our needs can be met and the intricate systems of nature can persist. Whether discussing moose herds on Isle Royale or Yosemite's famous Mariposa Grove of Sequoias, Botkin writes vividly and insightfully about nature, challenging us to rethink some of our most cherished notions. Anyone who is concerned about the environment will find much here to ponder as well as the pleasure of meeting a stimulating and thoughtful mind at work.

1 out of 5 stars Ecactly the kind of Ecological thinking we DO NOT need.......2006-07-22

Utilitarian to boot - this book is exactly the kind of ecological thinking that will do nothing but further the culture of control and domination that is destroying what's left of the world's wilderness.

The essential message of the book is that humanity needs to control and dominate nature more, not less, in order to save it. This is progressive humanistic delusion at its worst.

Botkin's "new ecology" discounts what he calls the "old" theories of interconnection, balance, and cooperation and argues in favor of an ecology that describes a disconnected, unbalanced, opportunistic and fundamentally disordered and chaotic natural world.

                    Thomas Hobbes would be proud!

                    But wait, there's more:

Discordant Harmonies was awarded the Mitchell International Prize for Sustainable Development in 1991. The Mitchell prize was established by George P. Mitchell, a Houston Texas based billionaire who made his fortune in Petroleum and Natural Gas development.

A quick study of the Mitchell Center for Sustainable Development reveals that it is funded by some of the world's most ecologically destructive corporate entities including: Enron, Ford, Shell Oil, Texaco and the World Bank.

As if that's not enough to reveal the agenda behind the Mitchell Center, one of the projects of the Center was to help the World Bank "relocate" the indigenous people whose land it flooded by financing an enormous dam project in the Brazilian state of Ceará.

With supporters like these, it should be obvious that Botkin is much more concerned with the "development" of wilderness than he is with its preservation.

Unfortuantely, this book has been highly influential for many environmental historians and has inspired many
anti-environmental and anti-indigenous books and papers.

One example is the book "The Destruction of the Bison." In this book the author, Andrew Isenberg, argues (contrary to massive ammounts of primary historical sources) that it was the actions of The Plains Tribes (not the White colonists) that caused the Buffalo to nearly go extinct; a disgusting example of blaming the victim for the actions of the oppressor.

Botkin's book is dangerous - a tool of the dominant culture.

Read this book? Yes - but read it with extreem skepticism.

4 out of 5 stars An important and valuable alternative.......2004-01-10

I wish this book had been written about 15 years earlier & I wish it was currently read by a wider audience. This is a well written book in which Botkin does an excellent job at articulating some of the troubling aspects of ecological theory as they move out into the world of policy, conservation, and belief. Like many of us Botkin was obviously raised in the academic environment of "equilibrium models" or "Balance of Nature" ideologies, and like some of us he found that what he actually saw in the field didn't really match up with what the theoreticians on the one hand and the hard-core "environmentalists" on the other were saying we had to believe. Botkin recognizes and revels in the complexities of the natural world and asks some difficult questions about the role that theory plays in shaping our overall perceptions. Anybody interested in conservation, land-use, or applied ecology would do well to spend some time with this book. The only reason that I don't give it 5 stars is that I wish that Botkin had gone a little farther -one gets the sense throughout that he has seen a promised land of a "New Ecology" but he keeps drawing back, he knows that there are fatal flaws in much ecological rhetoric, but he can't quite bring himself to say "away with this nonsense". Other than that, if there was one semi-popular ecology book that I would want folks to read, this would probably be a top candidate.

5 out of 5 stars Environmentalism and Pragmatism.......2001-09-30

I liked this book. It was a bit difficult to get through at first. I started the book and put it down for a few months, in chapter 3. But I picked it up again and read it all the way through. Botkin (the author) writes repeatedly about a new way of thinking that incorporates both environmental awareness and the need not to go too far in our concern about the environment. He discusses how the movement of environmentalism is basically operating on false principles, just as our mainstream industrial ways of thinking are perpretrating untold destruction of the natural world.
Botkin talks about the need for compromise, and specifically the need to think of nature in a new way. This new way that he iterates is the recognition of nature as a chaotic system. It is not constant, it is not irreversible (in some ways), and populations fluctuate under certain circumstances.
He describes how we need a new kind of ecologist. How we need people to study the animals and the ecosystems they inhabit with the idea of chaos in mind. But not complete chaos, there is structure to nature, but it is not formalized, nor is it constant. It is changing patterns that never repeat themselves, I guess Botkin might say, more eloquently than I no doubt.
He has a lengthy discussion about the role of religion in this book, which I found interesting. He even talks about the GAIA theory. Botkin re-iterates his points on numerous occasions, to the point that you almost get sick to hear them again. But he drives the point home, and his points are valid, and his view of nature, based on his own experiments is enlightening, scientific, and refreshing.

4 out of 5 stars Crowing into the Winds.......2001-05-15

First, let me say that this is a very good book, and that my comments are only meant as a cautionary note. Second, Botkin does know his "stuff" when it come to understanding ecological applications, theories, and the use of metaphors. This book was a useful, popular, corrective to the vast number of misunderstood ecological concepts at the time of its publication. That said, however, Botkin is also like a rooster: he crows too loudly, every morning. By page 38, I was already tired of his "this requires a new view and understanding of nature" which had been stated at least a dozen times before said page. Perhaps some readers will need this prose "boot to the head" reminder. Many readers will find this irritating. He is very much preaching to the choir as well. Changes in Ecology and parallel fields (Conservation Biology, Physical Geography, etc...) had already understood the past mistakes of such concepts as "equilibrium" (static) and "climax community." Botkin was about ten to fifteen years too late in writing Discordant Ecologies. Keep that in mind as you read it. If you start saying "Aha!" a lot just remember that others have already said this for decades, and that the corrective suggestions that Botkin produces have already been incorporated in the vast variety of ecological fields he discusses. This is a great book to use in a history of science, history of ecology, or biogeography class. It will also be useful to a lay audience, unfamiliar with the last 50 years or so of ecological literature. It is also rather easy to read in one sitting.

                    5 out of 5 stars Nature's Complex Symphony.......2000-12-09

In the space of two hundred pages, Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies Daniel Botkin offers us this concise and absorbing assessment of man's role in shaping the landscape with which we are now confronted, and suggests this perspective of the future: "Nature in the twenty-first century will be a nature that we make... We no longer have the luxury to believe that we can live in harmony with the environment without knowledge and understanding of natural systems." This is not a simple suggestion. Botkin reminds us of the intricacies that comprise every earth-nestled rock, every butterfly's wing, every molecule of water that falls from above. Science and knowledge, he suggests, are the keys to our future, our Promethean fire. How we use them will determine how long we will hold sway here. With a reverence for the observations of past and contemporary philosophers, scientists and nature writers, he leads us from the timbered foundation of Venice's church of Santa Maria della Salute to Eat Africa's Tsavo National Park to the remnant ancient forest woodlands of New Jersey's Hutcheson Forest to the remote and mysterious Isle Royale in Lake Superior to the lonely emptiness of te Moon and back again to Venice, on an expedition as valuable in its authenticity of observation as it is poetic in its rhythms.
