Book Description
Facing The Lion is an inspiring autobiographical account of a young, non-Jewish girl standing up for her beliefs in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform to the Nazi propaganda machines. Simone refuses to accept the Nazi party and her simple acts of defiance lead her to be persecuted by her school and local officials, and ignored by friends. She is put in a harsh reform school until the end of the war.
Customer Reviews:
Simone is a real survivor.......2007-10-04
This book is a first hand account of a young girl who had what it took to survive her horrible experience under the Nazi's. What she "had" was her religion. It is amazing to me that the large amount of Jehovah's Witnesses came through those war years able to cope with life after the war. So many others (in the camps) had no means of doing so. What J.W.'s have is nothing short of a miracle, as I have seen for myself. My 18 yr. old son and I met Simone and her husband at their home in France this past winter. The first thing Max did was to show us the number tattooed on his arm. Then he said to my son, "young man, I watched a 1000 people being put to death every day". Yet, here he stood, just out of the hospital the day before, still bright and full of life and love for his faith, at over 90 yrs. old. Next on my list is his book which I hear is just as inspiring as his wife's.
Young Girls Life interrupted by Nazie terrorists!.......2007-07-14
This young girl suffered so much at the hands of the French, who sided with the Nazies.
She was French and they took her away from her parents and put her in a terrible reform type school.
This book enlightened me as to how horrific that these Jehovahs Witnesses were treated and only because of their deep religious convictions.
It brought many tears to my eyes at how the innocent ones suffered.
outstanding faith.......2007-04-15
what faith this young girl showed with the help of her God ! A ggod example for all who face adversity.
Couldn't put it down........2007-01-10
I read this one in a day. Easy read. I especially liked the fact that it tells Simone's whole story, not just the bad parts. I enjoyed hearing of her life before and after the Nazi era. As a parent I found an excellent example in her parent's training of Simone. I suggest everyone should read this one. I encouraged my teenage daughter to read it and she did. Her faith as well as mine was strengthened. Simone proves you do not have to be superhuman to do the right thing.
The faith of a little girl.......2007-01-10
I was very impressed that a girl of just 11 years of age, taken away from her parents and put into a home could continue to have such faith in God and her religious views. Especially when her parents were both put into concentration camps and she had little likeley hood of ever seeing them alive again. I especially liked the honesty and the way she expressed her feelings, even after meeting her parents agian. It is a book that stimulates faith and helps a person to see that even under such a terrible dictatorship how even young people can stand firm for their faith and how Jehovah God supports them.

Book Description
For a young Soviet man in the 1980s, the chances were high that he would be obliged to serve for at least two years in the Soviet Armed Forces. At this time Soviet society was far more militarized than most other European countries; by the time they turned 18, most Soviet boys were far more familiar with military life than their Western European and American counterparts. Focusing on the daily experiences of a young recruit in the Soviet Army of the late 1980s, this book examines the history, organization, appearance and equipment of the Soviet forces, from pre-service indoctrination to uniforms and leadership.
Customer Reviews:
I beg to differ.......2005-05-07
I think that the illustrations were 1st rate. As I was in the Army during the "Army Of Excellence", I thought Mr. Rottman had a couple of good points. But I also think that some of the problems faced by the Officers Corp should of been addressed like the zero defect mentality and the fear of making a mistake by Junior Officers. Also the up and out program that has a very bad effect on the ethical standards of Army Leadership which fosters way too much careerism in my humble ex enlisted man opinion.
Excellent Illustrations, Barely Adequate Text.......1999-07-20
The author is one of those fellows who writes a lot and researches very little. In the case of this book, since he was serving in the reserve forces in the period covered and had access to good photos this book is of some use. The illustrator does excellent work but as far as I know, being a Brit, has no first hand knowledge of the subjects he does. In other words, good sources, good illustrations. Or to use the computer terms--GIGO. This book is fine if you want a bunch of pictures to trace for a school project and the teacher is as ignorant as the pupil is of what should be.

Customer Reviews:
Welcome to Paradise.......2007-06-19
This was certainly an interesting read. Suvorov, the Soviet defector, gives quite an extensive look at not only the now defunct Soviet Army, but also the entire Soviet system. Of course, being an army officer, the Soviet military is his area of expertise and the majority of the book's content reflects that, hence the title. I agree with the previous reviewer's that the chapters, `The Soldier's Lot' and `The Officer's Path' (whose content is self-explanatory) were the most interesting of all. Let's just say I don't envy any of the poor souls who had to go through Soviet military training, or for that matter, anyone who grew up in the Soviet Union. Nazi Germany had nothing on these guys in the cruelty department.
I also found interesting Suvorov's description of the Soviet Union's political structure, the "Bermuda Triangle" (The Army, The Party, & The KGB) as he calls it. He cites the well-known fact that a triangle is the strongest geometric shape known to man, and argues that this applies to politics as well. I kind of glossed over the middle of the book where he methodically describes each armed service (combat organization, strategy, equipment, etc.) in minute detail. Military historians will appreciate this, but I found it a bit tedious.
I really didn't see where the author gives that many controversial opinions. Occasionally he'll agree or disagree with the logic or effectiveness of a certain Soviet policy, but other than that, I didn't find too much of what he had to say as particularly controversial. My only concern is the question of reliability. Is he telling the truth? Now I have no reason to believe that he's not, but let's be honest, it is perfectly possible that a book like this could be written for reasons other than it's stated purpose. Overall though, this was well worth the read and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to those interested in Soviet/Cold War history or military history in general.
I'd like to close with a quote, which I found particularly interesting. I suppose some could find this controversial, I don't:
"Hitler would not give his wholehearted support to...the leader of the Russian anti-Communist movement. With unbelievable shortsightedness, he embarked upon a bloodthirsty campaign of terror against the inhabitants or the territories occupied by his armies. Compared to the liberation and collectivization campaigns carried out by the Communists, the terror was relatively mild, but it deprived Hitler of any hope of winning the laurels of a champion of freedom.....If, if, if only someone had realized how the Russians loathe Communism. If only someone had tried to tap this reserve of hatred."
Excellent and factual.......2007-02-12
The problem with people like Alex from Russia (Well folks...) is that they are automatically dismissive and outright hostile toward anything written by their countrymen who have "left the fold" so to speak, that is even slightly critical of the now defunct Soviet system in any way. Even men like Andrei Sakharov whose motives are above reproach receive similar treatment from the "Alex's" of the world, the same old tired refrain, "Suvorov... is a liar" and that's it... with absolutely no facts to back up their shrill assertions, it's unfortunate, but predictable. Suvorov's "Inside The Soviet Army" and the companion "Inside Soviet Military Intelligence" are excellent examples of an insiders view of the complex machinations of the Soviet military and political systems, well written, factual, and a fine addition to any library. Highly recommended in spite of the baseless accusations of a few people.
Insight on a former adversary that may still be relevant today.......2006-03-01
"Inside the Soviet Army" is essentially the insights of a former Soviet GRU (military intelligence) officer (and former tank commander) who defected to the West in the 1970s or thereabouts. It is an attempt by the author to tell the uninitiated what the basic nature and philosophy of the (former) Soviet Army was comprised of. As such, this is a fascinating look at the innards of an Army that is very different from the US or any Western army. When I was an Army officer I could not put this book down, and I must have re-read it at least a dozen times.
To me the most fascinating thing about this book, and indeed about the Soviet Army, was the fact that the Soviet Army is organized, as Tom Clancy once put it, along the lines of "organized chaos." Essentially, the senior enlisted men control the junior enlisted men, who they dominate and force to do all of the work. The officers put up with this (with the threat of mass punishment as their tool to get compliance out of the enlisted men) out of necessity. The hazing by the senior soldiers of the new soldiers is brutal, and is a recognized problem in Russian society to this day. (The "League of Russian Mothers" has emerged as a force in Russia to exert political pressure to reform this problem.) Sergeants? They have them, but most of the jobs done by professional NCOs in most Western armies are done either by officers or by the senior enlisted--the Soviet Army had no professional NCO corps. If I stray into the present tense it is because the present Russian Army, by all reports, is organized much the same as the former Soviet Army, although it is trying to reform from being a mass army of barely-trained conscripts into a more professional army featuring more highly-trained soldiers and officers.
Another insight that Suvorov brings out is that Soviet Army officers were subject to many of the same bureacratic restrictions and hamperings as Western officers--training quotas without fuel to achieve them, interference from higher headquarters over discipline of soldiers, etc. The Soviet Army was (and the Russian Army still is) plagued by many of the same problems as its Western adversaries, and the Soviets were not ten feet tall.
Some of Suvorov's conclusions are controversial, as other reviewers have noted, but in the main this book rings true, and seems to be a reasonable, if not totally objective, view of what the Soviet Army of the 1970s was like. Such insights were hard to come by then, and are now. That, combined with Suvorov's engaging writing style and obvious intelligence, makes this book merit each of its five stars.
As a read? Great, otherwise.......2005-10-29
Having read both Liberators and this one, My feelings for the book are mixed. OK, it is written by a Soviet officer. It is certainly a good and interesting read, and I'm sure it provides a window into the thoughts of contemporary Soviet officers. But...
The first thing I start wondering when I read a Viktor Suvorov book is ... how did he find out about certain things? How would he, a Soviet Ground Forces officers, then of the GRU, know about the operational status of, for example, the Soviet ABM system and Strategic Rocket Forces.
Another problem is that Suvorov sometimes can't even seem to make up his mind on his own positions (never mind whether the positions are accurate or not).
For example, is the 125mm smoothbore gun a good weapon? In Liberators, the answer would have been no: "In fact, it was an all-powerful gun, which always missed the target." Yet in Inside the Soviet Army, the same gun "Rapira", was assessed much more positively, and that smoothbore guns were an acceptable compromise for increased muzzle velocity and economy of manufacture (a inversal of his Liberator position!)
Or how about his meek acceptance of his tank crews being picked from conscripts of "Category 6" (i.e., far from the best available)? In Liberators, the guy depicts himself crying at this kind of policy (leaving him with a batch that doesn't even speak Russian), yet here he is far more accepting. Now he thinks it is a matter of necessity.
A third example is his opinion on the Soviet promotion scheme - the position is more important than the rank. In Liberators, it is shown negatively, both in description and example to promote a drunk and incompetent to a deputy regimental commander. Here, it is viewed far more positively in both description and example, such as with Vasilyveskiy.
In fact, the entire tone of this book is far more positive than in Liberators. The latter is a story of incompetence and cruelty. Here we still have the cruelty, yet Suvorov gives us a feeling things are mostly logical.
There might be a valid reason for all this, but it does create suspicion, since the discrepancy was never explained. Does Suvorov figure that no one would have read his earlier works and did a comparison?
Well, folks..........2004-11-20
There are maybe 1-2% truth, wrapped up in 98-99% lies...
The problem with the author - he is just a small-time rat cheating on his previous masters, a convincing tale-teller, though...
If you wish to be misinformed, then this book is just what you need.

Book Description
The new edition of this innovative textbook introduces students to the main theories in international relations. It explains and analyzes each theory, allowing students to understand and critically engage with the myths and assumptions behind them. Each theory is illustrated using the example of a popular film.
Key features of this textbook include:
* discussion of all the main theories: realism and neo-realism, idealism and neo-idealism, liberalism, constructivism, postmodernism, gender and globalization
* two new chapters on the 'clash of civilizations' and Hardt and Negri's Empire
* innovative use of narratives from films that students will be familiar with: Lord of the Flies, Independence Day, Wag the Dog, Fatal Attraction, The Truman Show, East is East and Memento
* an accessible and exciting writing style which is well-illustrated with film stills, boxed key concepts and guides to further reading.
This breakthrough textbook has been designed to unravel the complexities of international relations theory in a way that allows students a clearer idea of how the theories work and the myths that are associated with them.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating look at metaphysics of major IR theories.......2007-10-02
The other reviewers may be approaching this book from an undergraduate perspective, which is entirely legitimate. I can remember well my own frustrations with the manner in which IR theorists seemed to simply ignore the facts of the real world. But as my studies progressed, I came to understand that theory is always present. It always mediates between the facts we see and the interpretations we put on them. This is why Cynthia Weber's book is so important. Thru her analysis of a series of films she demonstrates how each main IR theory is beholden to a certain metaphysics about the actors of world politics, and relations the define them. Its a very novel idea, and she writes in a very accessible manner. I will definitely be using this book in my IR classes from here on in.
A Waste of Your Time.......2004-10-12
I was assigned this book as the only text for my "Global Politics" class. While it does a good job of explaining a few very basic theories in terms of levels of analysis, its descriptions of these are redundant, and the author makes the material seem irrelevant to the real world. She uses movies to explain the main "myths" behind the thoeries, but it's just a distraction so she doesn't have to address the real material. This book hardly talks about events in the real world or issues in international relations -- just theories! So do not expect to walk away understanding world politics -- but should you ever be caught in a discussion with institutional academics on realism and social constructivism, you'll at least be able to identify who came up with the theories. Don't waste your money.

Nationalism is one of the most hotly contested issues of our time. Despite its political significance and burgeoning academic literature, however, there is suprisingly little in the way of general theoretical surveys of the field. Umut Ouml;zkirimli's book aims to fill this gap by offering a comprehensive introduction to contemporary theories of nationalism, from primordialism to modernism and ethno-symbolism, as well as a systematic summary of the major criticisms raised against each.

Book Description
Theories of Democracy is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the main theories of democracy. Chapters are devoted to liberal democracy, classic pluralism, participatory democracy, catallaxy, democratic pragmatism, deliberative democracy and radical pluralism. Frank Cunningham assesses how these theories meet long-standing problems thought to beset democracy in practice: that democracy permits majorities to tyrannize minorities; that it is inefficient, unreliable and incoherent way of making collective decisions; that it invites conflict; and that it can be taken advantage of by demagogies or a mask systemic oppression. Cunningham also summarizes the views of famous forerunners of current democratic theory: Aristotle, de Tocqueville, Rousseau, Mill, Dewey and Schumpeter. A concluding chapter uses the example of globalization to show how the theories are concretely applied and notes their strengths and weaknesses in coping with globalization. The book also contains three helpful discussion sections that concentrate on the recurrent themes of the relation of liberal democracy to capitalism, the concept of democratic representation and the value of democracy.

Book Description
In recent years the political landscape has radically changed: established ideas about class, economy, nation and equality have been challenged by new politics of identity, culture, ethnicity and difference. The political theory of recognition is a response to these challenges. In this, the first introductory book on the subject, Simon Thompson analyses the argument that a just society is one that shows all its members due recognition. Focusing on the work on Charles Taylor, Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser, he considers how political theorists have conceptualized recognition, the different accounts they have given, and the criticisms made of the very idea of a politics of recognition. Through the political theory of recognition, Thompson argues, we can gain a better theoretical understanding of identity and difference. Practically, the concept of recognition can serve as a basis for determining which individual rights should be protected, whether cultures ought to be valued, and whether a case can be made for group representation. This clear and accessible book provides an excellent guide through the ongoing and increasingly significant debate between multiculturalism and its critics.

Book Description
This highly accessible text provides a comprehensive overview of globalization and its consequences. Exploring the insights of a wide range of critical theorists, this book argues that debates about globalization cannot be divorced from struggles for emancipation or from the contradictory realities of contemporary society. Clearly organized around thematic chapters designed to provoke student inquiry, the book demonstrates how the views of critical theorists are crucial to understanding the global processes shaping the world today.

Book Description
Since the 1960s, German scholars have developed distinctive methods for writing the history of political, social, and philosophical concepts. Applied to France as well as Germany, their work has set new standards for the historical study of political and social language, Begriffsgeschichte. The questions these scholars address, and the methods they apply systematically to a broad range of sources, differ as much from the styles of Hegel, Dilthey, and Meinecke as from those of A.O. Lovejoy, J.G.A. Pocock, and Quentin Skinner. Begriffsgeschichte treats political language neither as autonomous discourse, nor as the product of ideology, social structure, or elite manipulation. Although conceptual historians agree that the field of action is defined by language, they place concept formation and use within historical contexts. By surveying political and social discourses systematically, this genre traces how the great modern revolutions have been conceptualized in sharply contested forms by competing political and social formations, as well as by individual thinkers. Combining intellectual with social history, historians of concepts track linguistically the advent, mentalities, and effects of modernity. In The History of Political and Social Concepts, Melvin Richter analyzes the theories which have generated conceptual history, and their reinterpretation of key concepts such as Max Weber's three types of legitimate Herrschaft, and that of civilitOe in France. What is it that we know when we learn the history of a concept? What difference does it make that we know it? After assessing the programs and achievements of Begriffsgeschichte, the author argues the need for an analogous project to chart the careers of political and social concepts used in English-speaking societies. Addressed not only to historians of political and social thought, this work will interest students and scholars of political culture, social historians, and historians of ideas, historiography, law, language, and rhetoric.

Statistical Mechanics: A Set of Lectures (Advanced Book Classics)
ASIN: 0198513933 |
Book Description
The successful calculation of critical exponents for continuous phase transitions is one of the main achievements of theoretical physics over the last quarter-century. This was achieved through the use of scaling and field-theoretic techniques which have since become standard equipment in many areas of physics, especially quantum field theory. This book provides a thorough introduction to these techniques. Continuous phase transitions are introduced, then the necessary statistical mechanics is summarized, followed by standard models, some exact solutions and techniques for numerical simulations. The real-space renormalization group and mean-field theory are then explained and illustrated. The final chapters cover the Landau-Ginzburg model, from physical motivation, through diagrammatic perturbation theory and renormalization to the renormalization group and the calculation of critical exponents above and below the critical temperature.
Customer Reviews:
A nice presentation of the field-theoretic version of RG.......2000-06-01
This is a highly pedagogical book on the theory of critical phenomena and the renormalization group (RG). Field-theoretic methods are introduced gradually, and the physics is always illustrated with well-chosen examples. Technical details are explained thoroughlly and oftentimes summarized in ``boxes'' which span most of the book. At the end of every chapter, a set of problems allows the reader to test his/her understanding of the subject matter, and solutions to the problems are provided at the end of the book. Two regrets though: (i) that the authors did not touch at all the (less rigorous) but highly intuitive and widely used momentum shell renormalization group technique; and (ii) that the treatment of two-dimensional systems and the Kosterlitz thouless transition is a little superficial. Apart from that, this book is just great. A very useful book.
