Book Description

Beauty & Submission are the same thing. Something is beautiful when it obeys universal laws of harmony - obeying in the sense of embodying - so as a slave obeys her Master she embodies the mysterious beauty of the sensual world…

In a desire to tell the truth and dispel negative stereotypes about the life of a sex slave, Maria Isabel Pita wrote The Story of M - A Memoir, and her intensely erotic life with the man of her dreams continues now in Beauty & Submission - a vividly detailed sexual and philosophical account of her second year of training as a slave to her Master and soul mate.

2 out of 5 stars Like a train wreck, you want to look away, but you can't. .......2006-12-30

I picked up Beauty & Submission on a whim, after reading the back cover. I have recently begun to read a few BDSM and thought this book would help broaden my knowledge of the submissive aspect. I was disappointed with the outcome.

I thought the book held more issues with jealousy and swinging than the day-to-day life of a lifestyle submissive. I also thought that the slave seemed to switch between a dominant/submissive role. There were quite a few references to watersports which were personally not my cup o' tea, as you might say.

I did not enjoy all the pages where she "quoted" from her other novels. I believe the book would have been half the size if these would have been cut from the copy. It felt like an attempt to sell her other books.

1 out of 5 stars Where was the editor?.......2006-05-19

Technically this was an exercise in tautology, and albeit the author admits that they are events not presented chronologically/linerally, the whole thing came off as a repetitive scrapbook of free associative ramblings. Cultural allusions were off and revealed just a shallow dip into areas of interest; just deep enough to create a character for a sexual fantasy.
Every D/s relationship defines it's own perimeters, but this is the most silly top from the bottom (with a side of kink) i've ever read. Any girl who needs to prover her worth and devotion by degrading any and all around her isn't creating a deeper bond of submission, but pathetically wallowing in a misplaced sense of value (with a heaping side of self-image issues).

5 out of 5 stars Review from FRM Magazine, U.K........2005-07-01

Maria Isabel Pita not only writes about the SM lifestyle, having penned a string of sensual romances with punishment themes, she also lives it 24 hours a day. Having related how she met her Master, Stinger, and was introduced to the fetish and swinging scenes by him in her previous autobiographical book, The story of M - A Memoir, she goes on to outline the second year of her relationship with him in Beauty & Submission... In addition to her own journal entries, Maria uses extracts from her most recently published novels to show how the fiction she writes reflects her attitudes to sex and submission.

Beauty & Submission is worth reading not only for its insight into Maria's life as a 24/7 slave... but also for its descriptions of the American swinging and fetish scenes, which seem, from Maria's experiences at least, to be much more polarised than their UK equivalents. Maria's honesty cannot help but be endearing, as it reinforces the validity of the submissive lifestyle and inspires others to embrace it...

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-06-30

I think one's like or dislike of this book will be largely dependant on whether or not he or she is into The Lifestyle. And even then- they are going to have be very open minded and refrain from judgment, as everyone's idea of what is "normal" varies so much. That's a hard thing to do, considering the blatant contradictions between the author's actions and her view of herself. This book also seems like a feeble attempt to make more money off of the original, and a way to promote her other novels. A lot of the manuscript is just excerpts from her other books!

However, I did finish the whole thing in about 4 days. It IS a page turner- even though my respect for the author diminished considerably with each passing chapter. Again- it's a matter of preference. She wants to "dispel negative stereotypes", but personally I felt even more afraid of delving into anything beyond vanilla after reading it, and more unwilling to ever be associated with anyone of that nature. If a man wanted me to drink his urine and give me enemas and do it all in the name of love- I'd have a problem with it. Again, I'm not judging. Whatever two consenting adults do together is fine with me. Just don't try to pass it off as normal, and don't pretend to be strong when you aren't.

5 out of 5 stars Regina Avalos - ROMANCE DIVAS.......2005-05-17

If I had to find one word to describe Maria Isabel Pita's `Beauty and Submission' it would be intense. For two hundred and fifty pages, you are taken into her life and mind
through her beautifully written words. She describes the events of one year in her life with her beloved Master, and lets you share in the experience, using all she has at her disposal. She does this by writing about her life, as well as sharing excerpts from both her own personal journal and her erotic novels.

'Beauty and Submission' follows her second year with her Master, picking up where her first book, `The Story of M - A Memoir' left off. Even without having read that first book I
wasn't lost as a reader. Maria pulls you in with her words, and makes you want to continue reading. Her thoughts are so deep that I found myself re-reading passages over and over again.

Each chapter deals with the different events that culminate in the transformation of Maria into Missa, her alter-ego. And surprisingly, each experience with her Master teaches her something about her life and about love. She holds nothing back, and I know I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading what the BDSM lifestyle can really be like. Before reading this, I didn't have a true understanding of it. This book has given me that, and in a way I never expected. A lovely, intriguing read.

5 out of 5 stars Proves Transformation requires M113A3 Gavin combat vehicles.......2002-10-28

If there is a single book that captures exactly what is going on right now in DoD, this is THE book. Not only do the authors survey all of the major air, land and sea weapons systems under development, they write from a context framed by the past. This makes this work exceptional in contrast to most books that gush over future gadgetry while ignoring the physical world we live in which requires platforms that are robust, durable and mobile.

The book details how real transformation in land combat requires splicing new technologies like hybrid-electric drives, band tracks and advanced armor and weaponry to combat proven tracked M113A3 Gavin type vehicles not expensive lav3stryker rubber-tired armored cars. The authors explain how 5 combat effective 10.5 ton tracked M113A3 Gavins can fly in a single C-17 and easily in smaller C-130 aircraft while the overweight 19-ton wheeled lav3strykers can only fly 2-3 at a time in a C-17 and stripped down of fuel/ammo inside a C-130. The authors dilligently point out that spending billions on inferior equipment and losing capabilities is not transformation---gaining capabilities by upgrading M113 Gavins into Brigade Combat Teams is the way to victory.

Another excellent segment of the book is its depiction of efforts to lighten the individual Soldier's load and give him greater mobility (4-25 mph) by means like folding all-terrain bikes (ATBs) and carts. This book is a fascinating look into the future of U.S. warfare and should be a must-read by every Soldier, Sailor, Airmen or marine.

          Book Description

Politics of Latin America, Second Edition, explores both the evolution and the current state of the political scene in Latin America. Distinguishing itself from more traditional works on Latin American politics, this text demonstrates a nuanced sensitivity to the use and abuse of power and the importance of social conditions, gender, race, globalization, and political economy. The first section of the book presents relevant information about the region's geographic setting, history, economics, society, people, and religion, setting the stage for a more detailed analysis of the politics, democratization, political culture, political movements, and revolution in Latin America. The second part of the book consists of carefully constructed case studies of nine representative Latin American nations: Guatemala (Susanne Jonas), Mexico (Nora Hamilton), Cuba (Prevost), Brazil (Wilber Albert Chaffee), Argentina (Aldo C. Vacs), Chile (Eduardo Silva), Venezuela (Daniel Hellinger), Colombia (John C. Dugas), and Nicaragua (Prevost and Vanden). Each case study traces the historical development of key political actors and institutions, analyzing contemporary power configurations. Keeping pace with the rapidly changing events in each country, this expanded second edition provides fresh material throughout, including more information on interamerican relations and the successes and failures of democracy in Latin America. Along with two entirely new chapters on Venezuela and Colombia, it also features sections that thoroughly discuss democratic versus authoritarian political culture, the role of the United States, and the power game in Latin America. The thematic chapters offer updated background analyses--including a discussion of the 2002-2005 electoral triumphs of several presidents who were critical of the neo-liberal agenda, the new movements that have deposed presidents--and additional sections on U.S.-Latin American relations. Incorporating maps, tables, chronologies, bibliographies and clear indications of key players, Politics of Latin America, Second Edition, is indispensable for students and other readers wishing to gain a deeper understanding of this complex, dynamic, and rapidly changing region of the world.

I can think of no other text that explains politics in Latin America better. The authors provide an outstanding review of history, culture, religion and revolution in Latin America. Moreover, the research of Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Argentina, Chile and Brazil by assorted scholars in part two of the text is excellent. Anyone who wants a deeper understanding of Latin America must read this book.

Imagine being a boy who collects birds' eggs, and discovering that an extremely rare and endangered red kite is nesting in the woods by your own house! This is just the beginning of Taylor's story. The kite is "vermin," as far as malevolent landowner Mr. Harris is concerned, and he wants Taylor to destroy its eggs. The plot thickens, as Taylor battles his warring feelings of loyalty to his father, who must do his job to protect Mr. Harris's pheasants; respect for the beautiful bird; and desire to own the precious egg. When, through a tragedy of errors, a kite chick hatches, Taylor's feelings become even more confused.

This gripping tale is not for the faint of heart. As an environmental message, it is graphically convincing. Baby crows are dropped from the top of a tree and squashed into a pulp, lumpy kite embryos are killed and blown through pinholes in eggs, and a living adult kite is virtually crucified with a nail through her foot. Melvin Burgess's story is compelling, but his writing is surprisingly disappointing. Awkward at times with some pretty unconvincing dialogue, it's hard to imagine how Burgess slipped, especially when Kite is compared to his Carnegie Medal-winning Smack. Still, if one can get beyond the occasional clumsiness in style, it's a fascinating depiction of the British tradition of game keeping for organized "hunts," which more closely resemble slaughter. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

            Book Description

Taylor loves birds and collects eggs. He has the rare opportunity to enhance his collection when a pair of red kites nest nearby. The only problem is, the red kites are extremely rare - only twenty-five are left in the country. Taylor's father, a gamekeeper, is under orders from his boss, the landowner Reg Harris, to kill the kites, who are birds of prey and will go after Harris's grouse population. For Taylor, the temptation also to take the eggs from the kites' nest becomes insurmountable when Harris actually asks him to do the job, even though it is illegal. Pangs of terrible guilt follow, and although Taylor tells Harris he's gotten rid of the incriminating evidence, he secretly salvages and hatches one egg. But as soon as the bird is born, elaborate plans must be made to keep its existence a secret in order to save it from being shot during the approaching hunting season.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Kite - the condor's cousin.......2000-08-22

In "Kite", English author Melvin Burgess strikes a refreshing chord for readers seeking authenticity in animal novels for young adults. The softened world of sentimental animals boosk for children is challenged in this realistic novel about an endangered bird, a red kite. The book was written in collaboration with a wildlife biologist and details are wonderfully vivid and realistic.

Burgess does not tread beyond the bounds of decorum for children 9 and older; rather "Kite" is quick-paced, amusing, and heart-warming.. The main characters opt at the end of the novel to care for a wild animal who will never be returned to the wild - a major committment, as any animal owner recognizes. And although there is violence to animals, it is committed by the villain, who represents old beliefs which only the misguided could adhere to given the peril to wildlife in the present day.

The main character is sensitive, caring, and conflicted. The book will appeal most to children whose parents have dealt with harsh realities, such a killing animals for food or livelihood yet loved animals at the same time, and had to explain their values to their children. Major conflict in the novel occurs between the son and father, gamekeeper for the landowner, who runs the hunt. To disagree, the father must condone his employer's actions or lose his position, and his home.

The paradox of killing animals for food is set baldly against the killing of animals for sport or money. Set in England, the book's endangered animal is a red kite. Killing kites has recently been made illegal, but some locals still view kites as "vermin." The landowner Harris prizes his game birds, the pheasants, because he makes his living from hunters' fees for killing them. But Harris' cruel actions alienate even the hunters and eventually provokes the young boy's father to side with his son in the fight for the kite's life.

The books is not bleak, despite the seriousness of its message. Descriptions of the kite's awkward growing stages are humorous and memorable. Close attention to detail of bird behavior shows throughout. And finally, we learn the red kite populations burgeoned in the years of violence in England. Pecking the bodies of the dead was among the actions that gave this bird an odious reputation, much like the US condor or buzzard - a carrion animal. And yet, Burgess chose the kite to deliver his message.

Burgess' book distills some of the ecological/environmental issues that face English, Americans, and people of all countries - whether to adhere to the old ways (which were necessary then but are no longer, and are in fact detrimental) or to view with clear eyes the need to preserve all individuals in the biosphere for the parts they play in keeping the whole healthy.

3 out of 5 stars A tough book for American readers.......2000-06-24

Taylor's father is the gamekeeper on an estate that raises pheasants for sport hunting. The boss, landowner Reg Harris, is a blustering, greedy man who cares only for his own financial success. When several endangered red kites are spotted in the woods on the property, Harris demands that Taylor's father kill them, even though this is illegal. Taylor saves one of the kites' eggs and raises the young bird in secret. This is a very British book. American readers are unlikely to relate to either the setting or the lifestyle. That in itself isn't an insurmountable problem, but there are other difficulties that will limit this book's appeal to young American readers. Although the ecological message is worthy, the tender-hearted will find certain gruesome scenes hard to stomach. The mood is unrelentingly dark, and the characters are pretty one-dimensional. The tone of the book and its theme brings Wringer to mind - not an easy book to handle, either, but one tailored for an American audience.

The Berenstain Bears and the Big Red Kite is a rhyming Berenstain Bears book that tells the story of Papa Bear helping Brother and Sister Bear to make a kite. They enter their homemade kite into the kite flying contest. Despite criticism from those with fancier store bought kites, and initial set backs, the Bear family keeps trying and wins.

This book is well worth buying -- it teaches a lesson and is a fun to read rhyming Berenstain Bear book.

Sister and brother bear would like to compete in a kite flying competition, but they have no kite. Papa bear makes one homemade. At first it doesnt fly high, but then a big gust of wind comes and all the other fancy kites break and they win the competition.

I purchased this book used after first reading a copy from my local public library. The author has been all over the world researching kites and their customs and significance in each respective country. The book also details his adventures and travels. Also some amusing storys and situations.Albeit this book is dated, it is a timeless treatse on kites and a great book for the beginner or long time kite flyer.I spoke briefly with Mr. Yolen many years ago.He was suffering from parkinsons and needed a nurse to handle his affairs, but despite this...He was still full of life.He (his Nurse) sent me one of hisInternational Kiteflyers Cards as a Souviner of our chat. Book Description

It all started towards the end of the 1930s when the young Hugh Hood serviced a flourishing Saturday Evening Post route with more than fifty weekly customers. That was where the author-to-be first encountered the short story, in the formula fiction of the famous magazine writers, Damon Runyon, Guy Gilpatric, Arthur Train, and of course the Master, P.G. Wodehouse. By the '40s, Hood had discovered Pocketbooks, and, in particular, My Life and Hard Times (included in The Thurber Carnival) which led first to a story called `Recollections of the Works Department' and later to some of the methods employed in his opus, The New Age / Le nouveau siècle.

For a writer who once professed `If in the course of my life I can get a half a dozen stories printed, I'll be satisfied', Flying a Red Kite marked a different kind of beginning. The first selection of ten stories was completed in March of 1962 by John Colombo and Robert Weaver for publication by the Ryerson Press. Both editors felt at the time that an additional story was required to round out the sequence to a cohesive volume. Hood wrote `The End of It', and that is how we have it here - the eleven stories of Hood's first book-length publication, to which the author has added a lengthy introduction and a checklist of bibliographical data.
