Awesome Book (And Series!).......2007-06-13
I think the "Childhood of Famous Americans" Series is absolutely incredible! Whoever came up with the idea so long ago really had a creative mind! I own Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Jacqueline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Abigail Adams, John Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, and I have read every one.
I think that this book was my favorite of all. I bought it a couple of days ago and read it in one day! It shares Albert's own personal stories of when he was a boy and a teenager, like all of them do, and they follow him up to adulthood. Again, great book (and series!)
Great book.......2005-08-13
Very well written, and easy for a child to read and understand. Also quite inspirational.
Einstein: German, not American.......2005-06-20
What the hell? Childhood of famous Americans?
The great Man was a German Jew, who only moved to America in later life.
Keep rewriting history and telling your kids that every great thing invented in all time was done so by an "American". Hollywood would be proud.
Great book.......2000-10-04
This was an ultimate book about Einstein's life.

Book Description
A Time Remebered is a fitting tribute to the women who gave so much.
Customer Reviews:
It was an honor to have my story told in this book........2006-02-02
I thank Olga for allowing me to write my own chapter for this book. After many years of not being "allowed" to talk about my experience in Vietnam, it was truly a relief to put it into words. I am forever changed by my tour in Vietnam but I am proud of my service. My children suffered because of my Agent Orange exposure and also because of my PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). They realize, however, that I knew nothing about either when I volunteered to go to Vietnam. I am proud to have been included in this book with so many brave women. I am honored that my memories will be here, in print, long after I am gone. Thank you, Olga and thank all of you who take the time to read this book.

A Time Remembered is worth reading.......2004-12-16
I have always had an interest in nursing, and especially what the nurses in the War did. I wanted to learn about women in the Vietnam War, so then I learned about the nurses. I picked Women in the Vietnam War because I liked how each chapter was a different woman telling their own story about what they did in Vietnam, either as a nurse, Red Cross, special services, or voluntary services. I had no idea that there were all these different services that the women did and participated in.
I personally really liked this book. Reading about the different stories kept my interest and it was very interesting hearing about everything that they went trough. Knowing that it was actually the women who survived the war that were telling their story again was amazing to me. There were 9 topics, they were, Army Nurse Corps, Navy Nurse Corps, Air Force Nurse Corps, Women's Army Corps, Army Special Services, International Voluntary Services, USO, American Red Cross, and U.S. Agency for International Development.
Each woman had their own special story. They were all different, but many talked about why they wanted to be a part of the Vietnam War and their flight over there, and how it was so hot when they got there. Most talked about what they exactly did in the war, and their most memorable experiences that they went through. Many of the nurses had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and they either weren't treated fairy by men, or were sexually harassed. Many of the women still have flash backs because of the post traumatic stress disorder.
The part that most surprised me is when I learned about the reaction that the nurses/women got when they returned home. I never knew that the country was so against this war, and that these nurses who gave their time and support to the soldiers were spat upon and called names like "baby killers".
I think this is an excellent resource to learn about the Vietnam War and what the women went through. If you are interested in the Vietnam War itself, this is the book for you. If you want to learn more about nursing, nursing in a war area, or even just how women were treated in the Vietnam War, then this would be a good book to read. I think it is better if you learn information from true stories, like it this book, then from research papers, where information may not always be true. At least you know that you are actually learning the true life stories of these women, and that the experiences that they went through were real.
I had no idea there were all these nurses and all these different types of nursing. I had no clue who "Bobbie the Weather Girl" was. All these women were part of the Vietnam War, and they had as much as a risk as the soldiers, but they somehow don't get noticed. That is why it is important to read this book, and read about all the women that were there in Vietnam. When I thought about "women in war" I automatically thought the Army nurse, but there was many other types of nurses and volunteer women in the Vietnam War.
Having read this book, I think it did a good impression on what the women did in Vietnam, and I think it was very important to read this book and learn about what happened at the time of the Vietnam War.
Add this book to your collection about our women who served!.......2001-02-03
Having already had a copy of Olga Gruhzit-Hoyt's book about the women who served during World War II, I was anxious to read her latest book A Time Remembered: American Women in the Vietnam War (Presidio Press, ISBN 0891416692, 272 pages). What made it even more interesting for me was that I knew some of the women mentioned in her new book. Knowing how hard of a time I have had getting some women Veterans to open up, I was interested to see how the author collected her information and put it together. I quickly realized that she laid out her book by branches of the military and then the civilians who also served. She started quickly by stating, "Estimates of the number of women who served in Vietnam vary, ranging from 7,500 to 11,000 military women, with the greatest number being nurses. Add to this arbitrary figure the hundreds and hundreds of women sponsored by civilian organizations, and the figure could be near thirty thousand." As I opened the front cover I soon realized that I have already met or been in touch with some of the women the author interviewed. That helped to make this book even more interesting to me. Each chapter was about another woman and what she did during the Vietnam War. Each was powerful in its own right. The first eleven chapters were about the women who served as nurses in Vietnam. The author had five members of the Army Nurse Corps (ANC), two who were in the Navy Nurse Corps (NNC) and four women from the Air Force Nurse Corps (AFNC).
Naturally having served in the Army myself I was more familiar with the terminology used by the five women who were in the ANC as well as the three women who were in the Women's Army Corps (WAC). The nurses had been with the 36th Evacuation (EVAC) Hospital, 67th EVAC, 91st EVAC, and 24th EVAC. They were in Vung Tau, Qui Nhon, Tuy Hoa, and Long Binh respectively. The events they described were amazing. The WACs had been in Saigon and Long Binh. Other chapters included stories from civilians. Those women were in Vietnam with the Special Services, United Service Organization (USO), American Red Cross (ARC), and the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Some of the chapters were actually written by the women themselves. Others were put together following interviews and emails between the author and the women. Regardless of how they were done-they showed the various aspects of how these women's lives were affected both in-country and since returning to The World. This book is a tribute to the women who volunteered to put themselves in harm's way. It should be required reading for students, as well as military members and families of those who have served. This book will help many others to understand that it is not just the male Veterans who suffer from various maladies of war. Our women's history is very important and sadly there is not enough books written about what our women have done to serve our country. I was glad to see this one on the book shelf at my local bookstore.
This is a great book!.......2000-03-30
This book deplicts women of the Vietnam War. It has stories written by the women who were actually there, telling what they experienced. It tells about the bomb raids, soliers, and everything they've seen and what they will never forget. I recomend this book to everyone, especially if you are interested in women's roles in history, or the Vietnam War in general.

A psychoanalyst at the University of Virginia, Vamik Volkan tries to apply the wisdom of his profession to the problem of international conflict resolution. He offers a new vocabulary that illuminates concepts such as nationalism and ethnic pride in helpful ways, and is always careful to connect his theories to lessons from the real world. And as a native of the strife-torn island of Cyprus, Volkan knows his subject intimately. Blood Lines lacks an overarching thesis, but it also rewards readers with details and observations not to be found elsewhere. Those who enjoyed Samuel Huntington's The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order or Robert Kaplan's Ends of the Earth will appreciate Blood Lines.

Understanding Interethnic Violence.......2007-07-28
If a reader wants to know why Rwanda, Bosnia and others conflicts happened - and still will continue to happen -, this is the book. In this book Volkan simply give us a thorough understanding related to massive agression. A book that mainly but not limited to, political psychology, psychodynamic theory, social psychology, sociology, political science, foreing relations, history students should read.
Bloodlines.......2007-03-21
Blood Lines, From Ethic Pride to Ethnic Terrorism was written by Vamic Volkan, founder of the Center for the Study of Mind and Interaction. His group, including former diplomats, historians, and psychoanalysts, has been employed by administrations such as the Soviet government to solve ethnic conflicts and study relations between ethnic people. The author uses his experience as a psychoanalyst in crisis situations in providing comprehensive options for conflict resolution
This book addresses questions such as "why are they compelled to take revenge for the wrongs inflicted on their ancestors or others belonging to their bloodline?" Written in a well organized fashion, the start of a new chapter reveals a new situation of ethnic conflict in areas such as Estonia, Romania, and Cyprus. In examining each ethnic group the author not only speaks of the present but gives a concise history of that group making it possible to understand what is meant Conflict not only includes tensions between two ethnic groups but the removal of bodies from a cemetery used by both ethnic groups, visits to a Palestinian orphanage and more. With that, the author provides theories and analogies to explain the people's reactions. One example of an analogy is the equation of an ethnic group to a tent. The tent represents the identity of that ethnic group. This identity consists of a complete history of what that ethnic group has been through such as victories and defeats in wars, atrocities done to them, and even includes myths that people have about them. The tent is held up by poles, the poles representing the leader of that group. Depending on the shape of the tent, those inside may "rally around the pole" being indifferent to whether the leader has a positive or negative effect upon the group. Such are the examples the author gives.
"Bloodlines" offers a different perspective on ethnic conflict solving than most books propose. A psychological perspective is innovative and the author does a good job explaining what it means giving many examples and using analogies. For those who are skeptical on this type of perspective and who wonder how a psychological perspective, usually addressing one or at most a few people, can serve to address a whole ethnic group, the author does well in explaining how certain aspects such as myths and fears can apply to every ethnic group while other aspects can only apply to ethnic groups that have been through a particular event such as genocides for example. Also, the fact that he gives numerous concrete examples in such an array of situations shows that his theory is a credible one.
Although not necessary, it would have been nice if the author had explained why his theory is more valuable than other theories that have already been offered in the past. It would also have been nice if he had proposed solutions for future conflict solving.
This is a well written book that can be read by any individual whether for study or enjoyment. It gives a sufficiently detailed background of each conflict for one to understand how their current identity has been formed and how an ethnic group could feel resentment for another even hundreds of years after a certain act of injustice has passed while showing what needs to be done for positive developments in the relation to occur.
Diagnosis: Ethnicity, identity, violence and terror.......2007-03-19
"Bloodlines" provides riveting description and analysis of the psychology of ethnic conflict and its driving forces of psychology of identity, cleanliness, and trauma. The manipulation by leaders has driven much of the history of both ethnic and international violence. Ironies of pride and order coupled with hate belie extreme simplification. The example of disinterring corpses to segregate cemeteries reminds one of the Crusades against the Cathar heresy when bones were disinterred to be burned to powder.
Volkan's constructive interest is conflict resolution and gaining something approaching civility between enemies as in Latvia and Cyprus in particular. The detailed human examples and insights add to the story. Yet the difficulty provides less than complete optimism.
Leaders, intelligentsia, and masses are mobilized to reconstruct an often myth based identity when crisis or attack challenges - often leading to revenge and violence.
There is not something so vague and general as a "clash of civilizations' operating (and identity conflict and vicious violence within civilizations is often every bit as brutal) so much as a driving force of narrower identity and trauma with more specific enemies. These forces can be easily manipulated by opportunistic or hateful politicians. Historical amnesia, denial, and failure to sufficiently study and understand these issues merely increase their virulence and incidence.
Volkan's "Blind Trust" also rewards study. It is probably of value to an even larger range of readers interested in history, social psychology and politics.
If you put an "ethnic enterpreneuer" on the couch..........2001-04-24
...or better yet, several, you get something mirroring Volkan's work. Trained as a psychoanalyst, Vamik Volkan brings this unique perspective to the analysis of ethnic conflict. Particularly insgihtful is his recounting of his interviews with Abdullah Ocalan, the now-jailed leader of the PKK...Kurdish Workers Party. Volkan's study of ethnic pride, mobilisation, and terrorism and violence examines the problem of ethnic conflict upon a myriad of levels, focusing upon upper-level leadership, mid-level elites (i.e. intelligentsia), and grassroots behaviours.
This is a superb book, written in a wonderfully analytic fashion. Herein, a valuable foundational framework is offered for the understanding of ethnic conflict: relevant for students and scholars of conflict, and also for the person who wishes to attempt to make some sense of ethnic warfare.

The knowledge of citizen scientists, biologists, and naturalists informs this book's coverage of every aspect of the monarch butterfly's life cycle (breeding, migration, and overwintering) from the perspective of every established monarch population (western North American, eastern North American, and Australian). In addition to presenting the most recent basic research on this species, The Monarch Butterfly contains the first publication of data compiled from two established citizen science projects, Journey North and the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project. It also reports for the first time on two major events of long-term importance to monarch conservation and biology: the creation of a larger protected area in the Mexican overwintering sites and a weather-related mortality event during the winter of 2002. Monarch butterflies are arguably the most recognized, studied, and loved of all insects, and the attention that scientists and the general public have paid to this species has increased both our understanding of the natural world and our concern about preserving it. The unique combination of basic research, background information, and conservation applications makes this book a valuable resource for ecologists, entomologists, naturalists, and teachers.

NOT A COFFE TABLE BOOK - GREAT STUFF HERE.......2006-10-12
Dispite the pretty cover to this work, this is not a "coffee table book" about pretty butterflys. This is an indepth collection of scientific articles addressing all aspects of the Monarch Butterfly. Sections include Breeding Biology, Migration Biology, Overwintering Biology and Integrated Biology. The collection of articles and monographs is very extensive and very technical. The reader should be warned that this is in no way a light read. On the other hand, if you want information on the monarch Butterfly, I cannot think of a single volume which will deliver more information that you have here. Recommend this speciality book quite highly. It is well worth the price.
