Although Within Reach is targeted at young adults and written in a young man's voice, the writing (by coauthor Galvin) is engaging, and the story is rewarding enough to interest any mountaineer.

Pfetzer, 18 at the time of publication, describes his summits of a number of peaks worthy of a climber twice his age, including Huascarán, Aconcagua, Ama Dablam, Kilimanjaro, and Cho Oyu. He tells at length of his two expeditions to Everest, where he reached 25,000 feet from Tibet and 26,000 feet from Nepal. Purists may sneer, as all these climbs were commercial, guided expeditions--but heck, the kid was only 14 or 15; how else would he get there? And, though a paying client, he was unusually well prepared: a karate black belt (at age 11), courses in NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) and high-angle rescue, full EMT (emergency medical technician) training (even though he was too young to be licensed), in addition to being in top physical condition, which he rigorously maintained.

Pfetzer has regularly sought out older, more experienced mountaineers as mentors--somewhat rare for a teenager--and thanks them publicly for their teaching and wisdom. His love of climbing and determination to succeed are inspirational for all ages. --Donna DeShazo

Book Description

Two years ago, every media giant from ESPN to Good Morning America scrambled to document the inspirational true story of fifteen-year-old Mark Pfetzer, the youngest climber ever to attempt the summit of Mount Everest, the world's highest and most coveted peak. Now, as Mark prepares to embark on yet another record-breaking feat--to become the youngest ever to lead an Everest expedition--he shares his extraordinary personal story. Like Jon Krakauer's best-seller Into Thin Air, an account of another climbing party on the mountain at the time, Mark's personal saga is filled with both triumphs and setbacks. Details of his fascinating and careful preparations as well as a moment-by-moment account of the climbs are included in a suspenseful and fast-paced first-person narrative. Readers will marvel at Mark's determination through high-altitude and ice training as well as the arduous daily workouts; they'll sympathize with his fatigue as he carries nearly twenty extra pounds of schoolbooks to Advanced Base Camp. They'll also feel the adrenaline pumping when they accompany Mark past the ever-shifting Khumbu Icefall, over three-hundred-foot crevasses, and up into the high-altitude Death Zone. When his father is stricken with cancer back home, Mark's story also becomes an eloquent testimony to the unbreakable bond between father and son. A full-color insert includes photographs that capture moments from the expeditions, as well as breathtaking shots of the Tibetan landscape. A sure pick for aspiring climbers and athletes, Mark's story offers an exhilarating promise for all young readers: Any goal can be within reach, if you reach far enough.

How would you feel climbing the tallest mountain in the world at age 16? In My Everest Story by Mark Pfetzer and Jack Galvin that's exactly what happens. Mark a 16-year-old climber tries to summit the most dangerous and harsh mountain in the world. The mountain is described so vividly you can almost feel the wind on your cheeks.

This adventuresome, non-fiction book is written so realistically it makes you feel as if you were there through the eyes of Mark.

Mark's energy really got me wrapped up in the book and made me want to climb Everest myself. Mark's words and determination is truly inspiring and helps you to strive toward your goals. He's the most unforgettable character in the book!
Throughout this story Mark is on his "pilgrimage" to Everest by climbing other mountains to prepare for the ultimate challenge, Everest. In that process he is faced with many challenges such as money, leaving school for months at a time, and even death along the way. His Everest story is like no other anyone has ever experienced.

I found this story unique, touching, and interesting. Since I prefer fiction, this book was not a personal favorite. I found it was a hard book to read because of the vocabulary but would easily recommend the book to aspiring young adults.

Imagine climbing Everest at 16 years old with complete strangers. That's what happens to a boy named Mark in this book. The book My Everest Story by Mark Pfetzer & Jack Galvin is about a 16 year old boy who has a dream about climbing Everest. It is about how he trains very hard to get ready to climb. In the story, he also gets money from sponsors to climb mountains since it is so expensive.

In this book, the main character is mark. He shows many qualities throughout the story such as determination, confidence, and he is a good leader. Throughout the book the main character travels from place to place to climb with people. This book also uses vocabulary that some people may not recognize, so there is a glossary in the back of the book that tells you what they are talking about when they mention some climbing gear. In the back of the book, it also tells you about some of the other people Mark meets and climbs with on his journeys.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes documentaries and climbing stories. If you don't like reading a book with technical vocabulary, I wouldn't recommend reading a book. I didn't really like the book. It was okay, but if you like reading, adventurous stories then you would like to read about this boys adventures.

My Everest Story by Mark Pfetzer and Jack Galvin is about a young man named Mark. Since Mark was twelve years old he has been training to climb Everest. He didn't have any friends his own age, only his grandfather's friends. To get in shape for Everest he ran up and down hospital stairs until he couldn't run anymore. He also hired a trainer named Nel to help build up strength. Mark went on many climbs in order to train for Everest. During these climbs he experience so many unforgettable memories. But climbing can't be just all fun and games; he had to take all his homework up the mountains with him. He also had to go to summer school to make up some stuff that he missed. Will all his hard work pay off? Will e be able to summit Everest? Well, you will just have to read the book to find out.

In the beginning of this book I thought that it was very boring. As he started getting more active, training and climbing the mountains, I got into it. I play a lot of sports so it is easy to make connections to. In sports you have to practice, build up endurance, and most importantly, never give up. This book taught me a lot and it can teach you a lot too. There are many lessons to learn in this book. Mark also had many interesting experiences that he shared.

I would recommend this book to anyone that plays sports. It relates to most sports. Even though you might think that climbing has nothing to do with basketball, soccer, etc. it does. All sports take a lot of practice and hard work. If you are into this type of thing then this is a great book for you.

There are many different settings in this book. He travels around the world a lot to many different mountains. Mt. Everest is very cold but when you have all those clothes on and the sun is directly hitting you, it can become very warm. The climbers wear a lot of heavy gear. The gear helps to keep them warm but makes it a lot harder to climb.

Mark is the main character in this story. He is very determined, a great leader, and very caring. He takes on a lot of responsibility, but loves climbing. He always mentions that very few kids his age wouldn't even think about climbing. He always pushes himself to do his best and he never gives up. He knows that he can make it to the next camp or to the peak of the mountain. He also cares a lot about his family and all the support that the sponsors and all the other people gave him.

The vocabulary in this book is very tricky. To help you understand what the words mean there is a glossary in the back of the book. The glossary does not only help you with vocabulary words, but with some of the climbing gear that his mentioned. It helps out a lot. There are a lot of different characters because he climbs with a different group up each mountain. In the back of the book there is a list of characters in the chapters to help you. You have to pay close attention to the dates because if you don't, you will get confused. It is also good to know a little information about climbing before you start. When you are climbing a larger mountain you need to go up, then down, then back up. Climbers do this to acclimatize. This book was a very good book and I enjoyed reading it. I think that you will too.

"You are there" with a young man who becomes one of the world's accomplished climbers--from terrified first rappel to the summits (and near-summits) of some of the world's highest mountains.

I had no idea what climbing was all about until I read this book. How technical high-altitude climbing is! . . .

I began to realize an Everest expedition is almost as difficult as a moon shot. And it takes almost as much planning. Except, instead of having tens of thousands of paid government employees behind you, and a couple of billion dollars, an Everest expedition is a very private affair . . . and costs "only" $30,000 to $85,000 or so. . . .

Great story. Well told. A sharply drawn cast of characters. Includes several parables-from-real-life for the thoughtful reader.

One disappointment: Why does this current edition, first published three years after the book was written, not include any further updates? Why does a Google search on Mark Pfetzer bring up no pages with information more recent than 1998? . . . I'd like to know where this young man has gone in the seven or eight years since. He was "planning" to summit Everest in 1999; he was "planning" to dive to the Andrea Doria in 1999: did he ever do these things? Has he become a doctor? Gone on to medical school? Ever dated any of those girls he hoped to date? . . .

4 out of 5 stars A TEEN TAKES ON EVEREST..........2004-12-22

This is a terrific book for teens, young adults, and, yes, adults about a Rhode Island teenager, Mark Pfetzer, who makes his dreams come true. The book is written as if it were a personal journal, and in it Mark takes the reader on a journey into his young life. He shares with the reader how his interest in climbing developed, as well as his early climbing experiences.

Mark, mature in many ways beyond his years, is not your typical teenager. Clean cut, intelligent, fit, and not given to peer pressure, he is a bit of a loner with a dash of entrepreneurial flair. As his climbing experience increases, so does his desire for snow capped peaks. This desire motivates him to get sponsors for his world wide travels that take him to the vast mountainous regions around the globe. Mind you, he begins his world wide travels, unaccompanied by his parents, at the ripe old age of thirteen.

While one may question the wisdom of letting someone so young travel around the world to do high altitude climbing, it does not diminish the pleasure one derives from reading about a young person who derives such joy from his travels and climbing. While at times Mark seems a little full of himself, one must remember that, notwithstanding his achievements, he is still a teenager, and, like most teenagers, he has his moments.

Still, his chronicle makes for a very interesting read. His endeavors on high altitude peaks, including Everest, are noteworthy, notwithstanding that he climbed with guided expeditions. While towards the end of his journal he may appear to be suffering from trophy mountain madness, it does not diminish the palpable love of climbing that permeates the pages of the book.

Mark is, without a doubt, a son of which any parent would be proud. I am sure that he will continue to live his life to the fullest. I look forward to reading about any future adventures that he may commit to paper. Dream on, Mark, and may all your dreams come true.

            Book Description

A compelling history of the bloody battle that ended Louis XIV's dream of European domination and changed the course of history

"Had it not been for Blenheim, all Europe might at this day suffer under the effect of French conquests resembling those of Alexander in extent and those of the Romans in durability."
—Sir Edward Creasy, The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World

In 1704, the armies of the French king Louis XIV, undefeated for two generations, were poised to extend the French frontiers to the Rhine and install a French prince on the Spanish throne. But as French forces marched toward Vienna, allied armies under the command of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, and Prince Eugène of Savoy set out to oppose them. The two forces met at Blenheim, in Bavaria, and the French were utterly defeated, ending France's dream of European domination. Based on original sources, this page-turning narrative brings the battle to life, effortlessly moving from the deliberations of kings to the travails of the common foot soldier.

"Thoughtful, interesting, and well-written. . . . Spencer recovers an approach and authorial voice associated with Winston Churchill, whom indeed he quotes effectively and appropriately. . . . From the excellent scene-setting of the Prologue to the effective battle descriptions, which ably draw on the memoirs of the participants, Charles Spencer successfully combines narrative with analysis."
            —The Sunday Telegraph

"A remarkable debut . . . not to be missed."
            —Evening Standard

"Charles Spencer explores the decisive battle of Blenheim, the campaign that broke Louis XIV's domination of Europe and established the enduring reputation of the British redcoat . . . in this compelling, page-turning narrative . . . of a battle that changed the destiny of Europe."
            —Soldier

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work of 18th Century History.......2005-12-27

I had noticed this book while picking through works on the War of Spanish Succession here on amazon and I placed it on my Christmas list. I was surprised to open it and began reading it on Christmas day and couldn't put it down. I finished it the next day after reading through the night.

Spencer pens an amazing book that is said to concern the 1704 Battle of Blenheim in Bavaria. Instead, the book deals with a period of history of approximately 1670-1705, the time in world history where empires were rising and falling and what could be termed as the "calm between the storms" of the Reformation and Enlightenment. Spencer weaves and intricate and flowing tale of the great clash of arms between the marshalls of Louis XIV and the Duke of Marlborough, backing the narrative of the war and the battle with political intrigues, explanations of 18th century warfare, and a look at the three major characters of the book, the Duke, Louis XIV, and Prince Eugene of Savoy.

All in all, this book is an excellent first work from Spencer and I fervently await subsequent books.

3 out of 5 stars Battle for Not Falling Aslept.......2005-09-05

The abundantly plain prose of Mr. Spencer, interrupted here and there with some sparks of brilliance an even humor, fully accomplish the task of NOT showing any novelty about an age that, granted, has been well trodden by myriads of historians of any and every caliber. He, also, hit the target in NOT making a convincing case of his main idea that the battle of Blenheim, the axis of his narrative, changed the course of european history stopping the run of Louis XIV to continental domination. Mr Spencer himself, in some of his best chapters, give a plenty account of how stretched and weakened France was after so many campaings, so how improbable was that Louis could ever sustain such an empire even winning in Bleinheim.
It must be said that in any case, never forgetting the moderate standards of the so called "popular history", Mr. Spencer can be read in a leisurely sunday afternoon and, with hope, better works can be realistically expected from him in the future. So I give him three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! and I was surprised not only readable, but well referenced.......2005-08-27

Readable, effortlessly so in fact - I am not sure but I think Charles Spencer, or Earl Spencer, is actually a journalist - if so I think this book is the best of all worlds. It is a well referenced book which I think will appeal to academics and historians of English and military history - but his ability to tell a good story makes this a pleasing and easy read.

This books follows and really climaxes at one of the most significant battles in Europe at the time, and one which was really epitomised the animosity between the French and the English which was to finally end with Waterloo so 100 years later. The explanation of the background and the domination of the French in Europe at the time is well done. This is no dry-rendering of facts.

The book is divided into two halves, the first half backgrounds the politics of Europe and the various men who would later indulge in the war - and it seems it was an indulgence.

the second half takes us through the campaign, the life, and the major battles, including the battle of Blenheim which left several thousand British and allies dead and many more French.

John Churchill, who lead the British was later created Duke of Marlborough by Queen Anne for his efforts and was granted Government money to build the immense palace which was named for his most famous battle. Charles Spencer and the Earls of Spencer are descended from the Junior Branch of his family and so I expect he may have had access to papers to assist in this. For whatever reason it seems appropriate that he should write this book about his ancestor.

A great book and a good read.

            2 out of 5 stars A very pro-English point of view.......2005-08-02

Spencer adds little to the literature about Marlborough. His discussion of the international politics of the age is so biased as to make the book worthless. Read Chandler for a better discussion of this topic.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent History.......2005-06-05

"Battle for Europe" by Charles Spencer is a riveting account of the great battle fought at Blenheim between Allied forces under the command of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, and the French Army of Louis XIV on August 13, 1704. This is a splendidly told story, not only covering this pivotal battle but the events leading up to it and the main characters involved, including my favourite, Prince Eugene of Savoy.

This battle possibly changed the course of European history with the near destruction of Louis XIV's army. Up to this point the French Army under the command of many capable marshals had never been beaten. It was virtually unstoppable until it met Marlborough, the Captain-General of the armies fighting against France. In this book Charles Spencer describes the outcome of that meeting at Blenheim.

The story telling is first-rate, the narrative flows fast and smoothly, is packed full of information but never over-loads the reader with too much. The colour plates are excellent and the maps sufficient for the story however I would have appreciated maybe a few more.

The account of the fighting is excellent and once you start reading it's hard to stop. The narrative drags you into the fighting as the allied infantry assaults the villages of Blenheim and Oberglau and then mass in the centre for the decisive offensive that was to break the back of the French forces. In the end the allies lost 12,000 men killed and wounded but the French lost more than three times that number.

This is an excellent account and adds much to the military history of this period, no decent library should be without a copy on their shelves

              Book Description

De Officiis (On Duties) is Cicero's last theoretical work and contains his analysis, in a Greek theoretical framework, of the political and ethical values of the Roman governing class in the late Republic. It has often been treated merely as a key to the Greek philosophical works that Cicero used, but this volume aims to render De Officiis, which had a profound impact upon subsequent political thinkers, more intelligible by explaining its relation to its own time and place. All the standard series features are present, including a wholly new translation, a concise introduction by a leading scholar, select bibliography, chronology, notes on vocabulary and brief biographies of the most prominent individuals mentioned in the text.

              4 out of 5 stars Fatherlove.......2006-11-03

I'm not sure why we ignore our ancient wisdom. We seem to be well-fed on eastern paradox and mysticism, but we have lost the tradition of reason and cross-examination that brought stability and technology to the world. We heard the cry, "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we . . ." Part of the reason is that the nature of a moon-shot may be different than the nature of curing breast cancer, wining the war on terrorism within the time-frame of WWII, or solving social problems.

The other part of the reason is that we have abandoned the fundamental principles of Western Civilization that brought us Galileo, Newton, and Einstein. When we left theses core truths, we undid several thousand years of progress, and have returned to a faux primitive and savagery. Emotion has supplanted, reason, mercy has robbed justice, and catchphrases have replaced fundamental platitudes. In short, we have abandoned the mind, and are left with the stomach.

In "On Duties," Cicero drives a dagger in the heart of today's ills. This book's theme is justice as it related to social duties. It is essentially pedagogical, and like Aristotle's Ethics, is written as advice to his growing son. We speak of Motherlove, but this book embodies Fatherlove, or all the good and ideal aspects of paternalism.

As with all good philosophers, he is easy to understand, once you get the feel for philosophical banter. C. S. Lewis observed "The simplest student will be able to understand, if not all, yet a very great deal of what Plato said; but hardly anyone can understand some modern books on Platonism. It has always therefore been one of my main endeavours as a teacher to persuade the young that firsthand knowledge is not only more worth acquiring than secondhand knowledge, but is usually much easier and more delightful to acquire."

As you read "On Duties," you get the feel that Cicero is operating under a very different set of values. As I mentioned, the ancient world was founded upon justice and reason, and our post-modern world is founded upon mercy and emotion, with disastrous consequences. We need to be sensitive to these differences, since our assumptions are blind spots. As Lewis added, "It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between. If that is too much for you, you should at least read one old one to every three new ones."

This book is good for understanding the ancient mind, and great for personal development. Clearly and logically, Cicero explains the interplay between duty, advantage and righteousness. You many not agree with him, but Cicero did do his homework, has a point, and when he is wrong, he is wrong for the right reasons.

              Book Description

Cicero (Marcus Tullius, 106-43 BCE), Roman lawyer, orator, politician and philosopher, of whom we know more than of any other Roman, lived through the stirring era which saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a tottering republic. In his political speeches especially and in his correspondence we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the part he played in the turmoil of the time. Of about 106 speeches, delivered before the Roman people or the Senate if they were political, before jurors if judicial, 58 survive (a few of them incompletely). In the fourteenth century Petrarch and other Italian humanists discovered manuscripts containing more than 900 letters of which more than 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 by others to him. These afford a revelation of the man all the more striking because most were not written for publication. Six rhetorical works survive and another in fragments. Philosophical works include seven extant major compositions and a number of others; and some lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from the Greek.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Cicero is in twenty-nine volumes.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of ethics and logos.......2004-10-12

De Officiis, or "On Duties," was the second book printed on Gutenberg's printing press. Apparently, Gutenberg and his other contemporaries knew how important the press was so they wanted to give props to the Bible, as the most important book ever written/compiled-but along those lines he decided to print Cicero's classic shortly thereafter. Cicero wrote this book as a series of letters to his prodigal child, who had little ambition to be a correct man, like his father was. Consequently, it reads like good advice from your father.

Some of the greatest logos on ethics comes from this book. He will convince you that being an ethical person is the only way to live, and he does it through expediency-"whether the action contemplated is or is not conducive to comfort and happiness in life, to the command of means and wealth, to influence, and to power." The gist of it is that having good moral character will bring you more expediency in the long run than any illicit behavior. Maintaining power, increasing wealth and influence will naturally be easiest to those men and women with high moral character.

Most books on ethics and morality are not widely credible. The reason is that those great books are religious texts, claimed by those sects to be inspired by God, which is why they are incredible to many who are not members of that particular faith. But Cicero's De Officiis is recognized by all-because it is a secular book. So if you want to quote a high authority on morality, quote Cicero. Here is a preview of the good quotes: "For self control is the foe of the passions, and the passions are the handmaids of pleasure."
