By now the whory notion of doing a tell-all book about your boss, the President, is a hoary one too. (It dates back to Ike, who got the treatment from one of his doctors.) But with this book, the Clinton administration breaks new ground by being on the receiving end of a kiss-and-sell from a member of the White House security staff. Aldrich was an FBI agent assigned to the White House under both Bush and Clinton who, as this book makes clear, didn't think the changeover was progress. He mostly fixes on anthropological differences: the Bush staffers were neat and straight, the Clintonites were sloppy and had kinky work- shift sex a stone's throw from the Oval Office. Who knows if it's true? Who knows if Aldrich was debating between this and other more devastating forms of revenge available to a presidential guard?

AN EYE OPENER (and certainly a book you need to read).......2007-10-14
This book by retired F.B.I. agent Gary Aldrich is a few years old now, but still very timely, and especially so in view of the extremely high likelihood that Hillary Rodham [a/k/a Hillary Clinton] is going to be the 2008 Democrat nominee for the US Presidency. Aldrich was a career F.B.I. agent nearing the end of his career when the Clintons came to Washington and moved into the White House, where he was assigned; and what he saw then was both shocking and disgusting to him [and to others]. This book is based upon, and recounts and reveals, shocking and frankly very disturbing things that Gary Aldrich actually saw and heard going on in the White House, and every American needs to know about these things. Neither the mainstream press nor the Democrat Party will ever truthfully report the things that are revealed in this brave book, and certainly the "Clintons" and their sophisticated propaganda machine will not truly report what this book reveals, but all American voters need to know about these things now and before Hillary is judged at the polls in November 2008. After this book appeared Aldrich was visciously and unfairly pursued by Hard-Left characters trying to disparage and discredit him, and trying to cover up the misdeeds of the Clintons, as some reading this review may recall; but Aldrich bravely kept the book in print and thus kept its truth available to Americans who may chose to read it. The Clintons and those who are their operatives and tools do not want you to know about the things discussed between the covers of this book. It goes a long way to reveal the sordid truth about how a group of sorry communists and bad actors took control of the White House and of the highest echelons of American government after the election of 1992; but this book might have gone further : Aldrich originally had even more revelations in his manuscript, but the publisher put the book through an editing process that left some of the most revealing material out of the final, published book. Fortunately, there is a book that dares to tell the whole story. That other book, a patriots' project and a modern day book of true revelation, is presented as "fact-based fiction", but is based in fact upon close and careful research by people around the nation; and it is entitled THE EMPRESS PROJECT. To all who read this review, it is strongly recommended that if you love America and are anxious to keep her strong, then you need to read this good book by Gary Aldrich; and as soon as you have done so, you also need even more to read THE EMPRESS PROJECT. The Empress Project
Worth a read before the elections..........2007-09-03
The Aldrich account of the treatment of the White House and the Presidency rang true from the first page. Tied together with what coverage there was and has been in the media, then and now, his first hand detail of the Clintons complete disregard for our security, standards, and code of conduct is hard to ignore.
I think he risked a great deal publishing this book and find it sad that so many did not listen.
Turned My Stomach.......2007-08-24
The utter lack of respect the Clinton's have for this country our military and each other never cease to amaze me. The incompetance during the Clinton 'administration' is thoroughly laid out in this book written by a top FBI agent who was there.
There are a lot of typos in this book which can get irritating. I give them a pass because of the importance of the overall content. The truth is not in the typos as people like Al Franken would have you believe.
If you want more stomach turning facts about these two clowns, try Robert "Buzz" Patterson's book, 'Dereliction of Duty'. Patterson was Bill Clinton's top military aide. He was at the former presidents side at all times when he was on duty.
Read This BEFORE You Vote for "Her".......2007-07-08
This is a MUST READ which for a long time was unavailable.
The FBI (at whose orders?) refused permission for publication.
The book was privately published by brave people in, of all places, California, and was almost impossible to get. It's an eye-opener and really worth owning.
Don't Vote for Hillary 'Till You Read This.......2007-05-31
I read this book years ago, but I recommended it again just today. If even a fraction of it is true (and I suspect it is a whole lot more than a fraction), it is REALLY scary.

Political chicanery.......2007-06-08
Terrible information to read. Politics is, as W.F. Buckley once said, a seamy subculture, but it is sad to learn those we expect to lead are traveling a crooked path. Be prepared to be angered.

Yakovlev Aces of World War 2 (Aircraft of the Aces)
ASIN: 1857801407 |
Book Description
This volume deals with the entire family of Yakovlev piston-engined fighters from the simple but rugged Yak-1 through the Yak-7, conceived as a trainer but eventually developed into a fighter, and the prolific and versatile Yak-9, to the most capable of the line, the Yak-3 with which even the aces of the Luftwaffe were reluctant to tangle. In comparison with other contemporary aircraft such as the sophisticated all-metal Mustangs with their excellent aerodynamics and monobloc wings and multi-role Messerschmitts and Focke-Wulfs, the Yaks were less resistant to combat damage. However, they proved very amenable for the type of war that came to be waged on the Soviet front where the main efforts of aviation were devoted to the support of ground troops and aerial combat usually took place at low and medium altitudes. Series production of the Yakovlev fighters was undertaken by six factories in the Soviet Union. In all, a total of 35,737 machines covering all the different marques were built. In addition to the thousands of aircraft which served with the Soviet forces, some Yak piston fighters also served outside Russia Red Star Volume 5.

"Yakovlev's Piston-Engined Fighters" Authoritative Source on Important Soviet Fighter Series.......2006-02-07
Yefim Gordon and Dmitriy Khazanov provide a fresh and detailed look at the Soviet Union's single most important WWII fighter series in their book "Yakovlev's Piston-Engined Fighters." The book is meticulously researched, and provides a wealth of information no doubt drawn from archival sources in Russia unavailable to Western authors until the end of the Cold War period. Gordon and Khazanov provide an in-depth look at the developmental history of the Yak-1, Yak-7, Yak-9, and Yak-3, including plenty of photos as well one line drawing of each fighter type and six pages of color paintings. One particular highlight is a detailed chart showing technical specifications for almost every variant of the four fighters listed above. Finally the authors balance their work with historical descriptions of the operational combat history of each aircraft. Overall this authoritative work ranks highly among available sources on Soviet World War II fighter aircraft.

"The definitive account-with a new afterword-from the author of the classic Report from Engine Co. 82 The tragic events of September 11, 2001, forever altered the American landscape, both figuratively and literally. Immediately after the jets struck the twin towers of the World Trade Center, Dennis Smith, a former firefighter, reported to Manhattan's Ladder Co. 16 to volunteer in the rescue efforts. In the weeks that followed, Smith was present on the front lines, attending to the wounded, sifting through the wreckage, and mourning with New York's devastated fire and police departments. This is Smith's vivid account of the rescue efforts by the fire and police departments and emergency medical teams as they rushed to face a disaster that would claim thousands of lives. Smith takes readers inside the minds and lives of the rescuers at Ground Zero as he shares stories about these heroic individuals and the effect their loss had on their families and their companies. "It is," says Smith, "the real and living history of the worst day in America since Pearl Harbor." Written with drama and urgency, Report from Ground Zero honors the men and women who-in America's darkest hours-redefined our understanding of courage."

A bit repetitive and....flight 587?.......2007-05-05
It's hard to not give this book a 5-star rating because I was moved in many places and I'm so grateful for the sacrifice of the firemen on 9/11. This book opened my eyes in many ways to their ultimate sacrifice and their continued efforts to honor their own.
I do think, however, that this could have been edited a bit better. The aftermath section (which is about half of the book) seems repetitive to me and thus, not quite as powerful as the earlier section. Also, I found it strange that there was no mention of the crash of flight 587 on November 12th, 2001. Mr. Smith records that on that day he was in a meeting with Mayor Guilliani and other firemen about their role at ground zero. He focused on this day for several pages and failed to mention that 250+ people perished in a NY neighborhood aboard that flight and everyone initially suspected terrorism as the cause of the crash. This omission, perhaps, would have been more understandable had he not mentioned 11/12/01 at all, but there is a whole section for that day and certainly this crash was on his mind, since it did indeed involve firemen.
Overall, I recommend this book.
Hearing it from the men and women who were there.......2007-02-14
This is absolutely a great book, probably the best one for getting you into ground zero and feeling what they felt, to as great of an extent as you can. I don't quite understand all of the [---] he uses, for example, "the [firefighters] started down Vessey". Is he just trying something new? I don't care though, I have never read a book that is as honest and makes you feel like your fighting the fires with dennis more then his series of books. Great job!
Dennis Smith is 9/11's Studs Terkel.......2006-08-01
A very readable, moving book that adds still more to the memory-bank of September 11, 2001. The book is divided into two sections: 9/11 itself and the first months afterward, recounted day by day. Most of the second section is Smith's own experiences, with fewer "interviews" with others; however, this doesn't take away from the power of the work.
One peeve is that Smith too often refers to his previous work "Report from Engine Co. 82" in terms of whether or not people were aware of it--including incredulity that a police officer guarding the crime scene a few days afterwards didn't know. However, he writes some of the best descriptions of a profession, any profession, that I have ever read: "...to me it was always the best responsibility to have in a fire--to be on my stomach and to have the officer and the men shouting, 'That's it, you got it, move in, a little more, get the ceiling, get the ceiling, watch the windows, you got it now...".
One quote from an Assistant Chief of Department captures how quickly people forget--from November 5, 2001: "They came down to the World Trade Center in fire trucks and we should not let them leave in dump trucks." Five years later, don't forget all of those who did not leave that day the way they started it.
Poetic, Journalistic, Compelling.......2005-10-05
"Report from Ground Zero: The Story of the Rescue Efforts at the World Trade Center" by Dennis Smith provides a poetic-journalistic look at a tragedy which still continues to shake America. You'll find the book stronger in intensity than many of the photographic collections of September 11, 2001.
Why? Dennis Smith was a fireman who understood tragedy from an experienced viewpoint. Like all of us, he saw the worst of humankind crash into the World Trade Center. Then, he saw the best of humankind enter those same buildings to save the victims.
Now, three years later, after many in America have preferred to see terrorism as a political event and not one of evil and hate, it is important to remember the violent images, and the tender responses to the hurting and scared. America was in one its greatest moments in those torrid days, and we should never forget.
Smith's descriptions are more than photo-realistic versions of what he saw, but brings forth the anguish and passion, and the smell of wet ash and burning debris. Smith manages to connect with the reader beyond the hype and politics. You will not be able to read this unaffected.
The people in the high-rises, on the planes, and the policemen and fireman all were real people. Even the foolish young men who hijacked the planes, the ones who believe Bin Laden -- all real people who died for another man's lie. Smith draws out the real, draws out the essence as well as the actual accounts of the awful events.
I fully recommend "Report from Ground Zero: The Story of the Rescue Efforts at the World Trade Center" by Dennis Smith.

One part of the story of that horrible day........2004-11-24
As the brother of a New York City firefighter, I felt is was my obligation to read this book. It is a moving tribute to the survivors as well as the deceased. Please read it to understand the quality of the men who were lost and the hope that I still have because of the strength of character of those who survived.
Have your teens read the book to understand that a person is defined by their strength of character, their commitment and integrity, and not by the money they earn.
This book is about the members of the FDNY and some on the NYPD and their experiences of this monumentally tragic day. The book isn't intended to be an all-encompassing journal that recounts the thousands of stories and the experiences of the civilians who experienced first hand those events. If you expect it to be that, then you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a book that focuses on the impact of the rescue workers, with a glimpse of the brotherhood that is the FDNY, then this well written, relatively quick read is perfect.

"There is no center to this day, no middle or end. All its remaining minutes and hours will be collapsed into that single instant at 8:48 a.m. when September 11, 2001, became the saddest day of our history," writes Dennis Smith, a retired New York City firefighter. Shortly after the two planes hit the World Trade Center towers, he volunteered to help in the rescue effort. In this diary of the three months following the attack, Smith combines his own observations with interviews of those involved in the work, creating a detailed day-by-day history of the massive effort to find life among the ruins. His 18 years of experience in the field and considerable writing skills (he is the author of Report from Engine Co. 82 and nine other books) make him uniquely qualified to cover these events. To say the book is moving is an understatement--it is often overwhelming and difficult to read. Report from Ground Zero exacts an emotional toll on the reader; writing it must have been heartbreaking. In chronicling the hope, courage, and compassion embodied by all of the rescue workers, Smith has performed yet another service to his country. Note: A portion of the proceeds from sales of the book will be contributed by the author and publisher to the Foundation for American Firefighters. --Shawn Carkonen

Have you forgotten ?.......2005-02-11
Mr. Smith portrait the tragedy so realistic that we can also feel it...thats probably the commonest review sentence, I think, more or less.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, the author failed to focus on his role in the drama. He inserted several "political" comments, especially on the first pages, which I think useless and damage the message. To make it worse, the comments contain early and premature suspicions which until now can not be completely proven, besides all well-known conspiracy theories by the American leaders themselves. The author should have tightly focused on his expertise, on his role, to provide a REAL REPORT FROM GROUND ZERO.
Mr. Smith depicted the useless comments for describing the horrifying tragedy, as if only Americans have suffered from such a tragedy. As if Americans have forgotten the destructions their leaders and soldiers have caused for the last century. As if Americans have forgotten the magnitude and sufferings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, which is hundreds of times more considerable than 911.
Finally...in my opinion, this is a bad book, especially for foreigners.
Read it ~ More Than Once.......2004-07-24
I read this book shortly after it was published and I make it a point to read it once a year. I don't want to forget how I felt, how my fellow NYers felt, and how America felt. I will never forget.
This book was put together perfectly. Each firsthand account brought forth a new wave of emotions. I read the book through tears and at times I needed to take a break. It can be overwhelming. It is difficult to read first hand accounts of very real devastation and sorrow. I learned alot about the firefighters and their camaraderie.
My heart goes out to the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11 and their families who will miss them forever. And I thank Dennis Smith for creating this novel and giving the general public an insight to what was happening.
We HAVE forgotten & Dennis Smith reminds us.......2003-11-09
After 9/11 the rallying cry was "We will never forget". Reading that book two years later reminded me that we have forgotten so very much about that day.
In fact there are things about that day we never really knew. I've never recommended a book to such a wide variety that I have. I think it is a must read. It also proves that the media (TV & radio) doesn't give us a total and unbiased picture. They tell us and show us what they want us to see and hear. Some of the facts that are in this book, to me as well as my son who also read it, were stunning. Facts that were either not reported or under-reported, and glossed over.
Make no mistake that this is a book about the emergency service personnel. That is the purpose and the focus. Dennis Smith provides a wonderful forum that allows those who have no experience in the field to get a real feel of what they mean when they say "brotherhood" and talk about their *family* in the houses. Yes, many other every day people lost their lives, but the emergency workers and their families experienced a high number of fatalities of people that were close to them, as well as having to deal with the subsequent search of the very site that took family and friends. They delayed their grief to continue doing their job-not for only their 'brothers/sisters' but for 'anyone and everyone'. And yet others went back to their houses and continued to answer calls to help others unrelated to 9/11 as they do to this day.
As another reviewer stated you will cry when you read this book and you will. But when you finally put it down, you will be glad that Dennis Smith wrote it so that you could read it. Glad for the men and women that allowed him to include their words and experiences. It is a powerful insightful book.
Best of the lot.......2003-09-30
It took me nearly a year to work up the courage to read this book the whole way through. And even then I could only read the aftermath part. It was absolutely riveting. Mr. Smith made you feel you were right there at Ground Zero. One could only imagine the sights and sounds of that place, but Mr. Smith took you by the hand and led you. Just recently I felt ready to read the first half of the book, and found it equally well written and intensely interesting. That may sound funny, but to a lot of people the events and pictures of 9/11 are still very fresh even after 2 years. I wept at parts, marveled at the courage of both emergency service personnel and everyday people. In whole, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an accurate and intelligent portrayal of that awful day.
Couldn't put it down!.......2003-09-11
I picked this book up from my local libarary the other day, and I've hardly been able to put it down. I couldn't believe all the first hand accounts where the person was talking about being with a couple other people when everything was starting, and then by the end of the day those people were gone. Unbelieveable. I'm a military wife, and luckily my husband made it to Afghanistan and back last year. I wish someone like Smith would write a book like this about our men and women in the armed forces-not just one person who did something extraordinary, but a whole grouping of people who give first hand accounts. I also wish that people would just remember that just because someone like my husband is taking part in a war effort doesn't mean he/she agrees with the reason they are there. They only do what their "boss" tells them to do.

From the author: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded a three-year demonstration project in San Francisco to assess the feasibility of a large-scale school-based vaccination effort. The project overcame a number of barriers, including lack of pre-existing health services, diversity of home languages, and an every-50-minute-bell schedule. The project targeted seventh graders and all special education students for hepatitis B vaccine (HBVac). Of 4,928 students targeted, 3,509 (71%) consented to vaccination and received the first dose. Of these 3,509 students, 3,256 (93%) completed the three-dose series at school. Key lessons learned include emphasizing a collaborative process in the planning stage, offering an educational component for students, providing an incentive to get timely parental consent, planning distribution and collection of parent materials, and planning vaccination clinics to minimize interrupting the school day. The project clearly demonstrated that, with sufficient attention to political and logistical dimensions, school-based vaccination programs are possible in large urban schools. A good look back.......2006-08-28
During the tumultuous period of the 60s when author Dennis Smith wrote Report From Engine Company 82, the book was a cry for help from exhausted, frustrated men. Men who cleaned up in the aftermath of other exhausted and frustrated inhabitants of a society stretched to the breaking point.
As I type this, a younger firefighter in a comfortable, air-conditioned fire station among a population that by-and-large respects my profession, it's easy to forget the sacrifice of our past brothers who unceasingly fought fires, city hall and the population they served, until they had forged the modern fire service.
It's an important book for new firefighters to learn how the iron men of old did the job. And for the general reader it's a testament to both a volatile period in our nation's history, and to the timeless strength and courage by which good men have always worked to keep back the chaos of barbarism and destruction.
My Perspective on "Report from Engine Co. 82".......2006-08-23
I spent 10 years in the fire service in both engine and truck companys. While I have many memories and stories to tell, the author, Dennis Smith, sums up the life of a fire fighter in an urban environment about as well as can be possibly told. Trying to balance the unpleasantries and sadness against the satisfaction of saving a life or helping a family overcome one of life's most agonizing moments is very well portrayed in this book. This is what a fire fighter's life is about folks. There is no other book that I can remember that tells it any better than this. If you're thinking of a career in a big city fire department or for that matter, if you're even thinking of becoming a volunteer fire fighter this book is a must!
For those wanting a career in fire, this is step one..........2004-10-13
Before anyone decides to dedicate their lives to becoming a firefighter, they would be wise to start their research here. Some 30+ years after it was first published, this book still shows remarkable insight into the lives, struggles, and emotions of a professional firefighter. When I started on the road to becoming a firefighter, being a volunteer and reading Dennis Smith books asserted in my mind that my life would be wasted doing anything else. For others, this may convince you that the job is not for you. It isn't for everyone. Either way, this is a very enjoyable read and worth the time and money for anyone, not just firemen and wannabe's.
Firefighting on the mean streets.......2004-07-13
This is an extremely well written and easy to read book. The narration draws you in and transports you to the streets to ride along with the author. You can almost smell the smoke...
While there are many aspect of this book that are seriously dated (such as the seventies-era street slang and some of the firefighting equipment and procedures), most of this story could still be written today. This is the gritty reality of firefighting in the toughest sections of an urban center. You can feel the exhaustion and exhileration mix together as we ride through the decaying ghetto from one fire alarm to the next. What really stands out in my mind, though, is that Smith never loses his empathy for the people of the South Bronx. Even with all the abuse he and his company endure, he still understands their plight and wishes he could make their world better.
Nothing in my experience can compare with the magnitude of serving an area like the South Bronx, but many aspects of this story still reflect my career. The commaraderie of the fire station is the same, as is the sense of duty and willingness to risk everything to save a life. This is a terrific book for anyone looking to understand what it takes to be a firefighter, especially on the busiest city streets in the country.
The Bravest.......2003-11-27
When I first read this book I was in grade school. My dad thought if I wanted to be a firefighter I might want to read this book. I sit here right know and look at the inside of the cover, which is a hardcover and there is a price tag for $4.16 from Boscov's (which is a department store).
This book brings alive the fire service in New York City in the 1960's. This was one of the most challenging times in the New York City. During this time there were riots,a serious drug abuse problem, and politically charged agendas. But through all this the firefighters of New York City still had to provide fire protection to the citizens.
How many people can say that they know how it feels to be going to a fire to only find yourself a target for rocks, bricks and beer bottles. The men of Engine Company 82 and Ladder 31 found themselves in the situation more then once. These men had to deal with the pain and suffering of people that they went to help, and found that children involved made the job even harder.
Every shift they could look forward to arsons, malicious false alarms and the uncertainty of what might happen next. Did these men do this job for the money? I can say no they did not. They did it for the love of the job. That is why most firefighters do it. Most people and even some firefighters today do not realize the history and the changes that have been in the past 40 years.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to reads a book that they do not want to put down. Once you pick it up, you will not put it down until you are finished.
