Book Description
I don’t want to get out of bed.
I’m so stupid.
I did so many things wrong.
I don’t know what to do.
I’m going to be in so much trouble.
What am I going to do?
I’m completely screwed.
In 1991, fourteen-year-old Brent Runyon came home from school, doused his bathrobe in gasoline, put it on, and lit a match.
He suffered third-degree burns over 85% of his body and spent the next year recovering in hospitals and rehab facilities. During that year of physical recovery, Runyon began to question what he’d done, undertaking the complicated journey from near-death back to high school, and from suicide back to the emotional mainstream of life.
In the tradition of
Running with Scissors and
Girl, Interrupted,
The Burn Journals is a truly remarkable book about teenage despair and recovery.
Download Description
BRENT RUNYON WAS 14 years old when he set himself on fire.
This is a true story.
In The Burn Journals, Runyon describes that devastating suicide attempt and his recovery over the following year. He takes us into the Burn Unit in a children’s hospital and through painful burn care and skin-grafting procedures. Then to a rehabilitation hospital, for intensive physical, occupational, and psychological therapy. And then finally back home, to the frightening prospect of entering high school.
But more importantly, Runyon takes us into his own mind. He shares his thoughts and hopes and fears with such unflinching honesty that we understand—with a terrible clarity—what it means to want to kill yourself and how it feels to struggle back toward normality.
Intense, exposed, insightful, The Burn Journals is a deeply personal story with universal reach. It is impossible to look away. Impossible to remain unmoved.
This truly riveting memoir is a spectacular debut for a talented new writer.
From the Hardcover edition.

Lazy Saturday Read..........2007-08-12
I had finished a book that I had anticipated and was disappointed by so I need something to wash that "bad book" taste out of my mouth. I went to a local shop (Sorry Amazon!) and browsed the Biography section and settled on this.
At home I cracked the cover around 6 and way after the sun went down I closed the book and put it on the shelf completed.
I think this book hits home with me more than most memoirs because I can recall similar feelings as the author described having at that age.
I think this could be "boring" or "dull" for a lot of people that pick up a memoir of personal tragedy expecting pages and pages of self loathing and reality show-esque emotional breakdowns and temper tantrums to the cries of "I hate myself and want to die!". Although that may be real life for some people this book is more than that........... this book is about a struggle that happens within a family that don't know a struggle is happening. It's about a young man that did something horrible and kicked himself afterwards and came out a little stronger in the end without dragging his family through his own inner turmoil (the debate over if that is good or bad is up for debate howeveR) over his past actions and thoughts.
It's a book about dealing with a problem (depression), not ness. BEATING a problem. Which is the case for a lot of people that struggle with depression.
I would suggest it as a good read, especially for the adult teen angst type. Like me.
The way I described this book to a friend....
"It's like having a really really long "I need to get some stuff on my chest" conversations with your best friend without having to say a word"
True story, real eye-opener.......2007-06-06
I was a little skeptical to pick up Burn Journals but once I picked it up, i oculdnt put it down. its a memoir about how brent runyun doused his bathrobe in gasoline and lit himself on fire. Brent takes you on his recovering journey from the surgerys to repair his skin to learning to walk and do normal activity all over again to being in rehab. it really opened my eyes to how lucky we are to not have to go through that much pain.
just last week i got a bad sunburn and everytime i went to complain about it hurting, my mind would draw back to this book and id feel ashamed at complaining. as i said earlier, its a real eye opener. i recommend anyone over the age of 14-15 reading it.
harrowing and real.......2007-03-02
I read a lot of YA novels for my job, and most of them are terrible. What is so amazing about this book is precisely that it isn't a "problem" story with a preachy moral and an epiphany. It's absolutely real.
And for those who think the writing is flat or amateurish, try writing like this sometime. This kind of prose is incredibly difficult to pull off, and the mark of having done so is that it looks easy.
I plan to read everything this guy writes.
great book.......2007-02-01
i think this book is so good! i read it within a week, (good for me because i am a slow reader). i immediately got sucked in at the beginning; will he really do it? will he live? how will his family react if he sets himself on fire and then doesn't live? this book kept me wondering the whole way and wanting to know what will happen next. and i kept thinking; now why would he write that the character did this or that? but then i realize that it's a TRUE STORY! like in that carrie underwood song, "the past can't be rewritten, you get the life you're given..." that made the burn journals all the more touching to me, and i read it from cover to cover. and if i get the chance, i'll read it again soon.
The Burn Journals........2007-01-16
The Burn Journals by Brent Runyon is about a fourteen year old boy who's having a rough life and one day he decides he doesn't want to be alive anymore, so he covers himself in gasoline and lights himself on fire. His brother saved Brent's life. The rest of the book is about Brent's long and painful recovery.
I thought this book was very good because it touches on what the real life of a teenager is like. A lot of times teenagers have emotions they don't know how to deal with. This book shows people what the signs of depression are so it could help people help themselves or friends that are going through it.
The book relates to the book To Kill a Mocking Bird. Tom Robinson committed suicide and gave up all hope just like Brent did in the beginning of the book, and then he got his hope back and moved on.

Book Description
Metropolitan Museum Journal represents a richly illustrated study of well-known works in the Museum's collections, including pieces not on permanent display, selections from important exhibitions that have visited the Museum, and related works in other collections. Reflecting the breadth and depth of the Museum's encyclopedic collections, the Journal's range expands as the Museum grows.
Volume 32 features articles cataloguing a number of ancient objects in the collection—such as Roman figure-engraved glass, gold rings, and fibulae as well as Flemish harpsichords and virginals and a group of eighteenth-century Russian table snuffboxes—and essays revealing new research on the Museum's seventeenth-century reception room from Damascus and identifying the subjects in a portrait by Martin van Meyens the Younger and in an Italian portrait by Ippolito Buzio.

Organized & Easy to Use.......2002-10-16
I very much recommend this journal. The journal is uniquely organized using tabs, so it is easy to find and flip to the various sections. It has sections for: your book group members, books you're reading, books you want to read, books you have lent out, really good resources, and more. It is exceptional quality, the cover is very hard, the paper thick, has a small pocket on the inside back cover, and it is spiral bound. FYI, the shape of this book is sort of square, if you like that. I am buying one for each member of my book club for their birthdays. It's a very cute journal you will treasure.
Charming Journal.......2002-07-01
This little book is charming! The authors - creators- have selected wonderful quotes about why reading and especially shared reading matters and these quotes are sprinkled throughout the journal. I am giving this book to all my friends who love to read and to the English teacher at my daughter's school.
I just wish the journal were bigger and the print could have been a bit darker so I can read it at night but otherwise- thanks for a great book.
A good idea for Reading Groups.......2002-06-29
I just found this book but already I have used it to record some of my notes from books my reading group read this year. It also has lot of suggested reading lists which my group might be interest in. I had no idea this book was even around even though it was published a few years ago. I wish I had had it two years ago when my reading group started out.
Pleasing Reading Companion.......2001-06-14
This journal was given to me as a gift. Being a college student I didn't have time to even open it. So I gave it to my mother and it has become her constant companion. She picks it up the minute she finishes a book and she isn't even in a reading group. She has promised to give it to me as a keepsake as soon as it is completed. It is a lovely sweet book.
A waste of money........2001-06-02
Don't waste your money on this item. You would do better to pick up a nice journal and keep you reading group notes in that. As a lover of books, this is an embarrasment to even have on my shelf. It is put together like a phone book with a spiral binding. Looks very cheap. There are so many beautiful journals that you can pick up in place of this. The contents that are supposed to help with the recording of info are very lame, and there is not enough room given to write down your thoughts. As an avid reader and member of a reading group, this item/book was a huge disappointment.

Essential reading if you admire Bulgakov's work.......2003-03-01
Since I can't read Russian, I have to read Bulgakov's marvelous plays and novels ("Heart of a Dog", "The Master and Margarita", "Bliss") in translation. Nor did I experience, first-hand, the horrors of the Stalin purges.
I love the work of Bulgakov--he's a master of satire and imagination. This biography in letters and notes is really essential for the non-Russian reader to get a sense of his history, life and work in a way that can't be conveyed in translation. It put all that I had read by Bulgakov into a far more comprehensible light.

Book Description
Carlos Gagini's novel "El árbol enfermo" (here translated as "Redemptions") is a classic novel of Costa Rica, first published in 1918. This is the first English translation, and one of the few Central American novels available in English. Set in and around San José during the first years of the twentieth century, when the influence of the United States-economic, political, military, and cultural-was intensifying rapidly, "Redemptions" tells the story of the seduction and betrayal of a young Costa Rican woman (and symbolically of her country and region) by a North American entrepreneur. In the same genre as novels and essays by Uruguayan José Enrique Rodó and Mexican José Vasconcellos, "Redemptions" is a work of cultural nationalism which urges Costa Ricans to take pride in their traditions, to resist the encroachment of outside forces, and to recognize and solve their own problems. Originally published in 1985.

Book Description
Richard McMurry compares the two largest Confederate armies, assessing why Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was more successful than the Army of Tennessee. His bold conclusion is that Lee's army was a better army--not just one with a better high command.
Customer Reviews:
This is a MUST Civil War Read.......2007-03-31
To be concise--this is one of the best books on the Civil War. It is accurate, informative and very easy to read.
Interesting Look at the Two Largest Confederate Armies.......2006-07-18
Richard McMurry takes a look at the two largest armies in the Confederacy in what is, as the title indicates, an extended essay. The Army of Northern Virginia, ably led by Robert E. Lee, was able to compile a large number of impressive victories during the war. The Army of Tennessee, led by various men of less than stellar ability, was only able to win at Chickamauga, and even that victory proved barren strategically. The author considers various factors that affected the two, including geography, logistical concerns, leadership on all levels (particularly among lower level officers), pre-war militia systems in Virginia and Tennessee, and even the Federals who faced each army. He concludes that in every case, the Army of Northern Virginia benefited from these factors while the Army of Tennessee was negatively affected. I have seen it stated in several places that McMurry is saying that the men of the Army of Northern Virginia were better than the men of the Army of Tennessee. I did not get this sense from my reading of the book. Instead, McMurry is stressing that the men in leadership positions in each army were very different. The vast majority of the men who had graduated from military schools such as West Point, VMI, and the Citadel were concentrated in the Army of Northern Virginia to that army's immense benefit. The Army of Tennessee started out with many men who were untrained in the art of war, and that army's problems were exacerbated as casualties started to deprive it of even the small number of leaders who had that previous military experience. In other words, McMurry believes the raw material was there to work with, but the Army of Tennessee did not have experienced men available in large enough numbers to work with this raw material.
The last chapter of the book discusses the views of historians Thomas Connelly and Albert Castel on Robert E. Lee and also looks at the ways in which the Confederate government, specifically Jefferson Davis, could have prosecuted the war. McMurry sides with Castel in defending Lee from Connelly's attacks, and stresses that the Confederates were right to try to win the war in the east. With that said, the author believes the war was eventually won in the west by the Federals. I found it somewhat odd that McMurry would quote Connelly's entirely negative opinions on the western generals and agree with them while at the same time defending Lee from the same negative opinions. In a way, this did make sense, as it fits McMurry's own views on the generals of each theater. Perhaps Connelly is just a negative historian in general, however. Reading this book has increased my interest in Connelly's two volume history of the Army of Tennessee, and that set has moved much higher up my reading list as a result.
Overall, I enjoyed McMurry's short work, finishing it over one weekend in just three sittings. It really is startling to see how many trained military men ended up in the Army of Northern Virginia for various reasons at the expense of other Confederate armies. Likewise, it was illuminating to see all of the other advantages, intentional or otherwise, which were routinely provided to the Confederacy's largest army. This particular book is directed at students of these two largest Confederate armies and of Confederate grand strategy during the Civil War. I definitely recommend it to any student of the war.
Interesting contrast between two armies.......2000-06-06
Mr. McMurry's purpose in writing this book was to try and explain why the Army of Northern Virginia was so successful, and why the Army of Tennessee so awful. Although I did not agree with some of his conclusions, he does provide some compelling evidence to support his arguments.
I found this book to be very informative, and an easy read. I recommend it for anyone looking to better understand how the South fought the war, why the two great rebel armies had such different levels of success on the battlefield, and possibly why they did not have the ability to win the war.
Very Well Written and Insightful.......2000-04-20
I'm not a student of the Civil War, so I cannot comment on the merit of McMurry's main points, but as a student of the Old South I thoroughly enjoyed this book. McMurry's analysis of the two armies is very well organized and easy to read. Simply, it's a page turner. This book is at once both highly focused on a single topic and illuminate of larger Civil War issues. I really enjoyed this book and will read it every so often in the years to come. I recommend McMurry's book without reserve.
One side or another?.......2000-02-21
The title definately underscores how masterful Mr. McMurray has been in detailing the main differences between the Army of Northern Virginia and The Army of Tennessee. From the basics of command on through key strategy and deployment, both armies are beautifully dissected by McMurray's research, mirrored with an easy to understand style of writing.
This book not only discusses how important the upper command structures were to both armies but how the various infrastructures such as railroads, food supply, communication and weapons production differed from east to west.
This book can be summed up as an impressive literary study of the two great armies. It sheds light on the many differences as well as similarities and gives the reader new insight into the complex study of military history.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an intense study of both armies.
Well done Mr. McMurray!

False Advertising: There Is Not The Top Ten Of EVERYTHING Listed..........2006-08-07
All right, that said strictly in jest, this is a particularly fun book that if studied, will surely help you sound smarter than you really are in front of your friends, and as an added bonus increase your scoring ability with the opposite sex at MENSA conventions, PBS fund drives, and science club reunions. (Although as a caution, knowing too much minutia might also be a liability if used in the wrong places, like honky tonk bars, death metal concerts, or when you're in front of a judge and you hear him cite an incorrect fact while about to sentence you for your traffic violation.) The information here is sometimes pedestrian (um, top ten soundtrack albums? Bor-ing!) but more often than not these lists are interesting (AARP Magazine is the most read publication in America?), obscure (the element with the highest melting point is carbon), and so far as I could tell, reassuringly accurate. There are some surprises here (Andorra has the highest life expectancy in the world? Honduras has the highest murder rate? Mel Gibson was the highest-earning celebrity on earth in 2004? whodathunkit?) though in a few cases, these lists cited the obvious (the blue whale is the heaviest marine species? No, really?). Overall, this was a nice read that was filled end to end with information and facts, was well-illustrated, and was written so that a reader could take what was presented in little chunks, or plow thru the entire volume in one sitting and not be too overwhelmed. I assume there will be a 2007 edition? I can't wait.
Trivia, ice breakers and really cool lists.......2006-06-27
I have purchased this book for 5 years running. The new layout is super and the categories are as intriguing as ever. I use this to tie to content for training classes. We have fun with it and we make it in to a fun contest. They learn along the way too.
Great training tool.......2006-02-18
I do corporate trainings and everyone loves when we do a 5-minute "Top Ten" exercise. I am able to re-engage participants quickly by soliciting their guesses. Definitely worth the $$!
Amazing.......2006-02-09
This book is AWSOME its got just like the title says the top ten everything! and for 12$ and how thick the book is its a steal!
Bad printing.......2005-11-16
No, class not worth of money chinees printing contants very low quality this year.

Description:
To arctic breeding geese, the salt marshes of the International Wadden Sea are important spring staging areas. Many of these marshes have always been grazed with livestock (mainly cattle and sheep). To evaluate the influence of livestock grazing on composition and structure of salt-marsh communities and its consequences for habitat use by geese, a total of 17 pairs of grazed and ungrazed marshes were visited both in April and May 1999, and the accumulated grazing pressure by geese was estimated using dropping counts. Observed grazing pressure was related to management status and to relevant vegetation parameters. The intensity of livestock grazing influences the vegetation on the marsh. Salt marshes that are not grazed by livestock are characterised by stands with a taller canopy, a lower cover of grasses preferred by geese, and a higher cover of plants that are not preferred. Overall goose-dropping densities are significantly lower in ungrazed marshes compared to marshes grazed by livestock. Some ungrazed marshes had comparatively high goose grazing pressure, and these were all natural marshes on a sandy soil, or artificial mainland marshes with a recent history of intensive livestock grazing. Goose grazing is associated with a short canopy. The plant communities with short canopy, dominated by Agrostis stolonifera, Festuca rubra and Puccinellia maritima, together account for 85% of all goose droppings in our data. The sites that were not visited by geese differed very little from those that were visited, in the parameters we measured. This might indicate that there was no shortage of available habitat for spring staging geese in the Wadden Sea, in the study period.
