"Wonderful!” (Grace Paley).
“Heartwarming and smart and wonderfully written” (
Detroit Free Press).
“Provides edifying advice, intimately given, like the best-selling
Tuesdays with Morrie” (the
Dallas Morning News).
“Altogether original” (Dr. Laura Schlessinger).
“This story will speak to the humanity of the reader” (
Jewish Book World).
The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness is that rare, magical book—a book that tells a good story but also shows us how the tales we learned when we were children shed light on our adult lives. Joel ben Izzy had the unusual opportunity to relive those lessons when he lost his voice and reconnected with his old teacher, Lenny, a retired storyteller. Through his meetings with Lenny, Joel rediscovers the wisdom of ancient tales and takes us on a journey into a world of beggars and kings, monks and tigers, lost horses and buried treasures—and in the end tells us the secret of happiness.

Discerning book lover.......2007-01-05
I had picked up this book at a book fair a while back and it sat on my book self for months. One afternoon I started reading it and I was completely capitivated by the beauty, insight and inspiration contained in this bright treasure. The book speaks to your soul. It is also funny, wise and instructive. Ben Izzy gives us an opportunity to learn from his strength and challenges. When life hands you lemons you have options on what to do with them. Ben Izzy explores and discovers the ability to make lots of lemonade. This book was so moving that I wanted several special people in my life to have it and be able to read it again and again. Everyone that recieved a copy was equally knocked out. All I can say is do not pass this one up. This book will warm your soul and inspire you.
A Pleasant Read.......2006-09-08
This book intersperses short stories from around the world with the author's struggles coping with partial muteness. Rather than being preachy or sentimental, the author entertains us by providing international tales that foretell lessons he learns in his own life. The author's advice re: happiness reminds me of Theodore Roethke's beautiful lines:
"I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go."
I did not provide this book with five stars, only because I felt the author's relationship with his friend Lenny was co-dependent and deserved less attention. Of course, that relationship leads the author to a large part of his self-actualization, but I would have liked to hear more about his wife--she shines in every small aside about her. If you want to be entertained and read a story about an author coping with an illness (that affects his ability to speak) in his own unique, admirable way, this is the book for you.
A Inspiring True Story!.......2006-08-25
This book found me the day I was attending the wake of a good friend. I was feeling miserable of course and decided to start this book minutes before I got out of the car at the funeral home to take my mind of off my grief. I read the prologue and was hooked to this story. It has changed my outlook on life and on the death of my friend. It is great how the author takes each folktale and applies it to his life. This book is full of many life lessons and I am truly inspired to look through the curses in my life to find the blessings like Joel ben Izzy did. I have just bought this book and plan to read it to my High School World History classes this fall. I think this is a must read book for everyone. Give yourself a gift and read this book!
A TRUE STORYTELLER..........2006-03-19
Each person has their own story to share. Joel ben Izzy shares his story in this small book with great power. The author weaves wisdom stories from a multitude of cultures and applies them to his life story. The meaning and measure of ben Izzy's words challenges the reader to think of their story and emphasizes the importance of sharing it with someone.
Ben Izzy, recounts his life focusing on a central event, him losing his voice due to cancer. The tale describes the family heartache and personal struggles he must overcome to find the true story within himself. Read and reread this wonderful tale of love, loss, and enlightenment.
If you are looking for the meaning of YOUR life..........2005-09-28
...this is a good place to start. Joel draws you in with his engaging storytelling, insight, humble nature. I found myself trying to slow down and read just a little every night because I didn't want it to end so soon. But I could just have easily read the book in one sitting. Don't miss this one.

Nothing Much New.......2006-03-03
The Finishing Stroke should be a book honoring extraordinary soldiers; Texas troops of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Unfortunately, the book is very much a glorified Cliff Notes type collection of historical information provided in other books on the Army of Tennessee and Hood's 1864 Tennessee Campaign, and also, sadly, repitition of the despicable slandering of Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood. Not only does author John Lundberg offer very little new primary source material, he also fails to offer any new, independent opinion or analysis. His bibliography is virtually identical to the other major books on Hood's 1864 Tennessee Campaign, and his opinions, analyses and interpretations are simply an echo of other authors, namely Sword, Horn, McDonough and Connelly.
Most disappointing is Lundberg's propensity to make statements of fact, yet when I checked many of his noted sources, the "facts" were not facts at all, rather, an opinion of an earlier author...sometimes almost verbatim! As English historian Philip Guedalla wrote in 1920, "History repeats itself. Historians repeat each other." Unfortunately, almost all the historians whom Lundberg repeats are all venemous critics of Gen. Hood who have engaged in cherry-picking of historical records, concealing all historical records that support or praise Gen. Hood. Lundberg naively parrots these authors, passing their misinformation on to his readers.
One bit of praise; Lundberg is the first and only known author to expose Gen. Hood's acceptance of responsibility for the failure of the Tennessee Campaign. Lundberg quotes Private WG Davenport of the 6th Texas Cavalry, who wrote that Gen. Hood, during the retreat from Nashville, told a group of soldiers, "Boys, this is all my fault." All other authors condemn Gen. Hood for never accepting personal blame for the defeats in Tennessee, and conceal the multiple sources of Gen. Hood accepting blame.
The Finishing Stroke is a useful chronical of Granbury's Texas Brigade in the 1864 Tennessee Campaign, and provides more quotes from the diaries and memoirs of the veterans than other books, but the danger of the book lies in its wearisome repetition of now discredited myths regarding Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood's strategic decisions and personal demeanor during the desperate and ill-fated Tennessee Campaign.
An excellent book...........2004-01-02
I really enjoyed this book. What the writer conveys in the little known contribution of the Texans to the fighting history of the Army of Tennessee. It highlights the courage and determination of these soldiers. They fought under, I believe , under the best Division on the Confederate side, Gen. Patrick Cleburne. The book also documents the needless sacrifice of the Battle of Franklin. I would encourage anyone to read this book...
Light and Pleasing Despite Texas Bias.......2003-04-25
The introduction to this first in a series on Texas' military history, hints at the series' bias stating "Of all the fifty states, Texas has by far the most colorful and dynamic history." The forward laments that Hood's Texas Brigade had overshadowed the Texans who had fought in the Army of Tenn. but adds that "This book restores those Texans to their rightful place alongside Hood's brigade as the finest group of soldiers who wore Confederate gray."
Luckily for the North and the Union, there weren't more Texans or else the contest would have ended differently. Interestingly at no place in the book was Gen. John Bell Hood described as a Texan, though he had adopted the state as his own. The fact that Hood was the villain and scapegoat of the campaign probably was a factor in this oversight. Hood was so unpopular that the men changed the words of the song "The Yellow Rose of Texas" to end with, "But the Gallant Hood of Texas played Hell in Tennessee."
Overall the book is written with style and flows well. It is not intended to be a detailed study, but instead a narrative of the Texas troops in Hood's Tennessee Campaign of 1864. The primary focus is on Granbury's Texas Brigade. The bulk of this unit had not seen much action until the battle of Chickamauga, but they were excellent infantrymen. Were they the best? The argument could be made, but what would be the point? There were other outstanding brigades. Granbury's men were dependable and never lacked for courage.
Interestingly one of the most admired figures in this book is the Arkansan, Gen. Patrick Cleburne. Truly one of the great men of the Civil War his reputation continues to grow and grow. The fact that Granbury's men were led by this Arkansan did much to enhance their reputation. Several historians have lamented that it was the Texan, Hood, rather than the Arkansan, Cleburne who led the Army of Tennessee. The author rightfully treats Cleburne as a hero.
This work relies primarily on previously published works so no new material is provided, but the author makes good use of his sources. The author noted that a more thorough history of Granbury's Brigade by Dr. Danny Sessums will be published in the future. As an overview this is a decent effort, but the brave Texans who fought in the Army of Tennessee did not need any bias to prove their worth. Just the facts would have sufficed and honored them more.

Book Description
Today's leading thinkers explore the most incendiary human rights issue of our time.
"No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment."Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 5 (1948)
Of all the issues on the human rights agenda, torture offered Americans the moral high ground...until this year. With the abuses at Abu Ghraib that led to accusations of torture within the domestic criminal justice system, the question of cruel and unusual treatment has taken on new urgency in the United States and elsewhere.
In Torture, twelve newly written essays by leading thinkers and experts range over history and continents, offering a nuanced, up-to-the-minute exploration of this wrenching but timely topic, including, among others, Reed Brody on the road to Abu Ghraib and "ghost detainees"; Eitan Felner on the Israeli experience; Tom Malinowski on violations of State Department "forbidden practices" at Abu Ghraib and in Afghanistan; Kenneth Roth on the U.S. government's shift from cover-up to justification; and Minky Worden on a global survey of torturing countries.
Intended for a general audience, some of the key questions addressed include how to define torture, whether torture is ever effective, and whether it is ever acceptable.
Contributors include: Michael Ignatieff on whether torture is ever justified, Juan Méndez on the victim's perspective, David Rieff on why the human rights community is naive about torture, Jamie Felner on domestic torture within US prisons, Sir Nigel Rodley on negotiating with torturers, Julia Hall on rendition to torturing countries, Jim Ross on the history of torture.

Pretty Good.......2007-09-11
This was a decent and informative read, but it is maybe more activist that academic. Most of the essays come from Human Rights Watch, which is a fine organization, but it does tend to make the book a little one-sided. The finest sections were from independent authors, with the exception of the final chapter written by HRW's general counsel which was a great essay. Of course, the book's biggest shortcoming is that it fails to conclusively answer its own questions: does torture ever make us safer? Is it ever okay? You can draw some conclusions from the authors, but without being able to read some of the other side of this debate, the answers are at least somewhat superficial. I recommend this book as an accompaniment to others on the subject.
Excellent!.......2006-12-25
This is the type of literature we need to read to remind ourselves of the atrocoties of war. I will recommend this book to anyone interested in analyzing the justifications of torture, with the premise that some claim it might save others from harm. Easy to read essays, good for the everyday reader and for the scholar. I would also recommend it to those guys prepping to be deployed.

Interesting Guide .......2006-02-24
If you purchase the book use the data. One may follow a path to introspection and learn more about their higher self. An introduction that may assist one walking the path. The book is in my library, good quick read.
Don't get Confused!.......2005-06-04
While a fairly interesting look at shamanism (along with a few other peripherially related spiritual tools), this book is also published as Shamanic Spirt, under which title, it comes with a CD of shamanic drumming. Don't get confused and buy both!
Find the hidden message of truth contained withing this book.......2002-03-03
In the preface of this book it is written "In this very action of writing is sometimes contained an essence that is not of the mind, that essence comes from the Spirit and is conveyed to the Spirit of the one who reads the words with an Open Heart." These ancient truths can assist one in creating a relationship with the universe. The sun, the moon, and the stars are alive and they are not separate from us. This book contains a complete understanding of what one needs to know about Truth and Great Spirit. Many of the spiritual teachings out there in my opinion miss the mark where this hits it right on the money. Read and learn the Value of "Balance" according to the teachings of the "Medicine Wheel" and "Directional Technology" and see how even the teachings we have come to trust for many years are one step off. Contained within these teachings are the secrets to a happy marriage, a successful career, a healthy body and mind as well as a true spirituality. This book teaches you how to move from one direction to the next and keep them all in balance. These are not the teachings of Kenneth Meadows they are the teachings of Great Spirit, they are the ancient truths passed on in an oral tradition from the native people who have recieved their guidance in Ceremony communicating with the Ancient Ones. In these short words I cannot possibly decribe to you the depth of value hidden within this book, my hope is that everyone can read this book and see the truth and the widsom that is there for all of us. So trust me if you are seeking truth, you will one day come to see that most all of the teachings you will read about are only sections of the pie and what is taught here is the entire pie. I don't know Kenneth Meadows and may never meet him but I do recognize truth when I see it. Keep up the good work Kenneth our world needs the understanding.
Excellent shamantic guide for journey of self-discovery!.......1998-06-12
Meadows' clarity and easy-to-understand approach to the search for meaning and purpose guides a novice such as I along a path to self-identity and realization of inner potential and individual responsibility. This book is a must for readers who seek information on self-discovery, the many (often hard-to-understand) aspects of life science, self-fulfillment, and understanding of life's journey. Summary? Great book, hope you enjoy it too!

Book Description
When the Iron Eagle Flies is a complete meditation course from one of the West's most beloved Buddhist teachers. In her usual direct style, Ayya Khema points us toward the middle path — a path of simplicity. Her teachings unfold simply, free of jargon, and are ideal for a contemporary world where the fevered pursuit of pleasure and comfort leaves us "like children playing in a house on fire, refusing to let go of our toys." A practical guide to building meaning through awareness, When the Iron Eagle Flies contains a wealth of exercises and advice to help the reader along the path. Ayya Khema grounds her teaching in ordinary, everyday experiences, and gradually reveals how to gain access to liberation and freedom.

Understanding Emotional Reaction.......1999-11-28
This is one of the first books on Buddhism I have read that really helped me to understand how much of our thinking is dependent upon our feelings, and how to deal with the emotions and the level of being that is based on emotional reaction. It became clearer to me through reading this book how many of our reactions and judgements have an emotional base. When I realized the author of this book was a woman, somehow the level of thorough attention given to this challenging aspect of ones practice, made perfect sense. Most works in Buddhist philosophy/ thought have been written by men. Her focus and language spoke directly to me in a way I have not found in other books. She expanded my knowledge and awareness of my own self-observation in the meditation process. She also offers much description on meditation techniques.

Book Description
After a stormy night, a farmer, searching for his lost calf, finds a baby eagle that has been blown out of its nest. He takes it home and raises it with his chickens. When a friend comes to visit one day, he tells the farmer that an eagle should be flying high in the sky, not staying on the ground. "But this eagle walks like a chicken, eats like a chicken, even thinks like a chicken," the farmer replies.
Twice, the farmer's friend tries to get the eagle to fly, but it sees the chickens on the ground and drops down each time. At last the friend, followed by the farmer, carries the young eagle back into the mountains and places the great bird on a rocky ledge, just before sunrise. As the air is filled with golden light and the sun appears, the friend cries, "Fly, Eagle, fly!" and the eagle raises its wings and soars upward, out of sight.
This simply told yet dramatic story from Africa will delight children everywhere and encourage them to "lift off and soar," as Archbishop Tutu puts it in his foreword. In lovely, expressive paintings of great beauty, sparked with touches of humor, Niki Daly, an internationally known artist, catches the essence of this powerful tale.
Customer Reviews:
An African Myth of Claiming Our Birthright's Potential.......2006-05-13
This was a wonderfully illustrated children's book sold at an African gallery in New York City on Broadway. An old tale from Ghana about how an Eagle realized it was the King of the Birds, Majestic, Regal, and meant to SOAR rather than grovel on the ground with chickens. Nothing is sadder than a soul who won't claim their best self and rise up to the challenge.
Birds of a Feather Flock Together and in the words of Les Brown "You can go out every day and find pidgeons but it takes time to find eagles, and eagles fly!"
Teach your children to claim their Eagle spirit today!
Discovering the eagle's potential.......2003-10-09
I bought this wonderful book for my nephews and loved it so much I'm buying another for my grandson. The story of an eagle that is brought up among chickens and thinks and acts like a chicken until it is encouraged to fly like an eagle has several messages. I'm a prison chaplain and it reminds me of the men and women who could be soaring on eagles wings if they can break out of the mold of their emotional environment. It has a spiritual message - we are children of God and can live a victorious life if only we will appropriate it. It also can illustrate the release of the soul at death. But it is definitely a delightful tale in it's own right.
Fly Eagle Fly.......2002-04-04
This African Tale is about a farmer who comes across a baby eagle and decides that he will raise it as a chicken, and so he takes it back to his farm and puts it with the other chickens. The eagle soon learns how to act like a chicken. Everything continues on fine until one day the farmers friends comes over and says this is no chicken this is an eagle and he belongs in the sky. It takes the man three times until the eagle flies away into the sunset. I like this story because it shows how much things change depending on their current environments, and sometimes that environment can hold us back from being the best we can. The author does a great job at portraying the act of finding ones true self and become independent. The illustrations in this book are also great.
Spread Your Wings & Fly!.......2001-12-07
I truly enjoyed this children's picture book, which appeals to all ages, because of the inspiration and message it conveys. In Africa a small eagle chick if found lost after a storm. It is taken back to a village where it is raised as a chicken. It talks, walks and eats like a chicken unto one day a visitor notices that amongst the chickens there is an eagle. He tries everything to get it to fly but it believes and acts like it is a chicken, until one day he takes it back to the mountains where it was found as a chick to meet the sun at sunrise. Upon the mountain, once taken from the environment it has been placed in and seeing the bright light of the horizon and the view it realizes it can fly and does so and never lives the life of a chicken again as it soars high in the sky.
I loved the message because it shows that we as a people have been treated like chickens by society, but we are truly royal eagles. Don't be content on being a chicken, but stretch forth your wings and fly! The illustrations are wonderful, and the message is worth attaining the book alone. This is a good book to add to the treasure chest of books within your home or your children's collection to inspire them to spread their wings and fly to reach new heights in the horizon's light! God is Love!

it's example how to spoil good idea.......1999-01-11
hard to work - very big size hard to find answer or key or something else and so on and so on
Not enough detail.......1998-12-25
This book read as if the author was in a hurry to complete a full novel in record time. Although the basic concepts were interesting, not enough detail was included, characters were hard to identify with, and the ending was rushed. This is not, however, reflective of the author's other works, which I have thoroughly enjoyed reading.
It ain't the Odessa File.......1998-10-13
Frederick Forsyth is probably not quaking in his boots after this book came out, and I can see why. Unlike the Odessa File, this novel has no chance of winning the Edgar Award. This book is very stacatto, as if it were thought out as it was written. Mr. Flannery should take a hint from Mr. Forsyth, who uses extensive outlines before he writes. There is no subplot of any kind connecting the various incidents in this novel, and when the President is about to be killed, you wish they'd go ahead and get it over with. It's a shame Mr. Forsyth retired. I wish we had more thriller writers like him.

Book Description
One summer night his dad says, "HOBART is not my real last name, Ace! We're going on a journey to find my roots and my bliss." About to protest that he'd rather hang out at home in New York City with the Falcons, Ace wonders if he's related to someone like Humphrey Bogart or Buffalo Bill. Driving a thousand miles to Kansas City to find out why Dad was placed in an orphanage right after birth, they search for his grandmother, the only one who knows his true identity. "A whole state full of girls and what are we doing?" Ace writes back home. "Looking for an 80 year old woman!" But Ace's mysterious grandfather is not in K.C., although sexy Amy Schwarzenegger is. Ace could spend the rest of the summer with her, if it was left up to him, but off he goes to a place in America he never knew existed. Finally, in the high desert of the Rockies, they discover Dad's father. He soon introduces them to a life that makes Ace and his father powerful new men. Even if you've never gone on a "hero's journey" with your dad, and don't want to, read how Ace quits worrying about what others think of him by becoming Eagle Feather in a secret, heroic world. BARBARA BEASLEY MURPHY is the author, along with Judie Wolkoff, of ACE HITS THE BIG TIME and ACE HITS ROCK BOTTOM. A former actress, Barbara is also the author of MIGUEL LOST & FOUND IN THE PALACE (winner of the Zia Award from the New Mexico Press Women's Association and first in a series of novels on the New Mexico State Museums), TRIPPING THE RUNNER, ANNIE AND THE ANIMALS, and ANNIE AT THE RANCH. She received the Christopher Award for THE NY KIDS BOOK and, in addition to a busy writing schedule, participates in a program of building homes for the poor in Mexico. She lives in Santa Fe.
