Book Description
His father is a white trapper, his mother an Athabascan Indian who walks a thousand miles in winter to reunite with her family. Thus, Jimmy Huntington learns early how to survive on the land. When his mother dies, Huntington -- at age seven -- must care for his younger siblings.
A courageous and inspiring man, Huntington hunts wolves, fights bears, survives close calls too numerous to mention, and becomes a championship sled-dog racer.
"On the Edge of Nowhere is an enduring Alaska classic, still "tingling with excitement." Jimmy Huntington's memoir is being republished in a handsome new third edition to which photographs have been added.
Customer Reviews:
this man did not live a soft life.......2007-08-20
First I kind of feel like apologizing for only giving this four stars. I really did like this book, and I really did find it well written, but five stars is kind of where I put Brothers Kharmazov. Having said that, this is a great story of life growing up in the wilds of northern Alaska. It begins with the 1,000 mile overland survival walk of the author's Indian mother across the tundra to return home after testifying in the trial of the murderer of her first husband. From there the hard fought life of her trapper son gets chronicled as he and his brother virtually raise themselves in the wilds of the frozen country. The beauty and wildness come through, but more than that the spirit of the author and his family in not only pulling themselves up with the own bootstraps, but doing it time and time again after losing everything to floods, fire, disease, and even peculiar laws.
There was so much territory to cover, fitting in a way for a book about Alaska, that some stories such as his dogsled races (Iditarod precursors) that the author won could've filled a whole book but get only enough ink here to leave the reader wanting more. In any case, it's a great book, and well worth your time. The story of a miner, trapper, dogsled racer, merchant and eventually politician. To use a cliche, among the last of a fading breed.
Nowhere.......2007-06-11
Extremely captivating book. Well written and impossible to put down. I am constantly amazed at the willpower some of these people have to go through what they do.
Wild rollercoaster ride!.......2006-05-12
From the minute I opened it, this book took me on a wild ride. What a great storyteller!!!
I live north of Anchorage in a rural/urban area, so I don't completely know what it is like where he lived. I do, however, understand his personality better after knowing many sourdoughs like him.
What a great guy and loved by his family.
Good read!.......2006-02-18
Good read. I read on my flight to Alaska. Has a few discrepancies between this book and his brothers book but I would guess that can be due to being a long time ago and they weren't very old at the time. Would recommend it to anyone.
my grandfather.......2006-01-16
this book was very well detailed to the life of my grandfather . the storys that my dad told me about him and reading this book were very helpful into learning about the life of jimmy huntington, and what life was like on the yukon.

God Speaks to Everyone.......2003-07-17
The book is a short description of legends of Maniilaq -- an
Eskimo prophet of the 19th century. I found it beautiful. God speaks to all people and his message is the same everywhere. Highly recommended.
Hope.......2001-12-02
This is a wonderful book for anyone and any age. It can inspire us and give us all comfort knowing that the "grandfather" in the sky cares for all of us. It is an easy read told through the words of the elders. It is a very wonderful book and is a reminder of how we are all God's children. I highly recommend it!!!
Perfectly written........2001-11-14
Wonderful! If you are looking for an uplifting book without it being preachy, this is the one you want.
Historically accurate, imaginative, and well researched.
The cover art is beautiful.
The content is wonderful; it would be a great book for a multi-cultural class.
Prophetic.......2001-10-25
Further evidence that God speaks to man and would free us from superstition and fear, this is a story for adult and child in every nation and culture. Its narrative allows the reader to sit with Inupiaq Elders and experience the oral tradition of American native culture. I'm currently reading it to my six-year-old, a real critic.
Maniilaq.......2001-09-19
An awsome book a story of a Prophet "Maniilaq" from
Northwest Alaska a story worth telling and should be known
worldwide and would probably make a good movie with the
right director and actors etc.. Get this book you'll be
glad u did -jg in alaska say's HI to my people- :)

On the edge (Nowhere High No. 4).......2000-07-14
I found this book extremely good. I thought that Caro was a very strong individual who had a sense of what she wanted. The only problem she had was she didn't know how to get it. I thought that T.J., Josh, Alison, Darcy, and Marc were all really good friends who helped each other out in a time of need. My favorite part of the book was when the entire group was together at the end decorating the Christmas tree. This book showed that as long as you have friends who are there when you need them you don't have to carry a burden all by yourself and end up going crazy.

Book Description
Unlike political or economic institutions, social movements have an elusive power, but one that is no less real. This study surveys the history of the social movement, puts forward a theory of collective action to explain its surges and declines, and offers an interpretation of the power of movement that emphasizes its effects on personal lives, policy reforms and political culture. While covering cultural, organizational and personal sources of movements' power, the book emphasizes the rise and fall of social movements as part of political struggle and as the outcome of changes in political opportunity structure. This second edition has an entirely new chapter, major additions to the bibliography, new illustrative materials in many of the chapters and a new conclusion.
Customer Reviews:
A Strong Focus on Politicized Social Movements.......2004-02-23
Aside from some introductory matter on the various schools of thought in social movement research, here Tarrow mostly focuses on the influence of political structures on the formation of popular movements. This includes both external political and social influences, plus developments in the interactions between movements and the states/regimes they are confronting. Tarrow mostly uses movements that have had strong political effects in various nations (mostly Europe) as examples for his theories, and utilizes the concept of "cycles of contention" to elaborate on the evolution of movements over time. This specialized focus does lead to some interesting results, such as Tarrow's reconstruction of the disparate revolutions in Europe in 1848 as a widespread movement, or coverage of how states can co-opt a movement's message as a means of control. He has a nearly Marxist conception of such trends, but mostly avoids the tiresome pontificating that is usually fostered by Marxist theorizing. Another bonus is the final chapter of the main text, dealing with new phenomena in globalized or transnational social movements. The book does lose steam frequently as Tarrow gets distracted with long histories of the movements he uses as examples (including way too much repetitive information on the 1848 phenomenon), while his generally strong writing does occasionally lapse into diffuse professor-speak, which sadly is unavoidable in this field. But in the long run, this book offers mostly powerful coverage of politicized social movements, and the study thereof. [~doomsdayer520~]
Good analysis of social movements, but..........2003-05-19
Tarrow examines social movements and contentious politics in an in-depth way, providing a framework for understanding cycles of contention and other issues associated with social movements. This book is valuable in that the reader can use Tarrow's arguments to understand the dynamics of current movements. As the previous reviewer noted, Tarrow does leave out some important aspects of social movements, such as emotion, which detracts from his argument.
What I disliked about this book was the writing style of the author. It seemed that he was trying to express even the most simple concepts with verbose, pedantic language that made his arguments difficult to understand and distracted the reader from the points he was trying to make. For example, he defines a cycle of contention like this: "a phase of heightened conflict across the social system: with a rapid diffusion of collective action from more mobilized to less mobilized sectors; a rapid pace of innovation in the forms of contention; the creation of new or transformed collective action frames; a combination of organized and unorganized participate; and sequences of intensified information flow and interaction between challengers and authorities. Such widespread contention produces externalities that give challengers at least a temporary advantage and allows them to overcome the weaknesses in their resource base. It demands that states devise broad strategies of response that are either repressive or facilitative, or a combination of the two." (Page 142.)
The only reason I can fathom that anyone would feel the need to write in such an absurdly inflated style would be if the author's argument and thesis weren't strong to begin with, and the author's intention was to confuse the reader. I think the author could have gotten his point across in a much clearer and concise way. I would advise anyone who is thinking about reading it to peruse the sample pages for more examples of the author's style- then decide if you can stomach this book.
Overall, good information, but the writing style is ridiculous.
Ideal for the social movement student.......2001-08-24
I had to read an earlier edition of that book for a course on social movements. It was one of my first contacts with social movements literature. Since then, I plug almost everything I read on social movement to the theoretical framework described in this book. I guess the main quality of this book is that the author recognise the contributions made by different schools of thought on social movements and tries to situate them in a larger framework rather then dismiss them. Therefore, anyone working within a specific area of social movement studies can gain something from the reading of this book. However, the major contribution of this book is probably the theorization of the "cycles of contentions" based on changing political opportunity structure. As the opportunity structure open for a social movement, the movement is on the rise... when it close, for example because of a change in the public opinion caused by a rise in insecurity and violence, the movement disolve. Although a very simple theory, it appers very effective in understanding the rise and fall of social movements.
As any student of social movements would argue, this book does not cover all aspect of social movements (e.g. identity, emotions, ...) but Tarrow does leave enough space for other approaches while developing is how theoretical approach to social movements. An excellent book!

Geat Book for Identifing Ducks.......2007-05-14
I've looked everywhere for a table top book with just information and color photos of ducks to help us identify the water fowl we see from our home on the Chesapeake Bay - This is it - Wonderful full size, full color photos that point out the differences in species both in flight characteristics and on the water feeding activities. Age and sex appearance differences are also illustrated as each species has its own chapter. Well organized layout that is ideal for our purpose - best of its kind that I've seen.
The GREAT Gallery.......2002-02-06
The Great Gallery of Ducks... is truly great, if you're looking for a pictorial reference book on waterfowl. The book is crammed with photographs, almost all of which are well-taken, many showing fine detail. A few are underexposed, but most are indeed of great use to birders, artists and others intent on seeing waterfowl up close and personal.
This book is the winner.......2001-01-04
This book is one to have! This book is what I call the greatest beginners book to waterfowl. It takes you step by step, thru different breeds (Canvasback & Green-winged teal), types (Dabblers & divers), and the anatomy of the birds. It is a great book for any waterfowl painter or Waterfowl carving beginning artist to invest in. It has helped me a lot and it has helped my other fellow artist out also. (Like 2000 Federal Duck Stamp artist Adam Grimm) Take my word: get this book. You'll thank me.
Excellent Source for young Waterfowl hunters?.......1999-10-22
I have been hunting ducks all my life and have read quite a few books on waterfowl, but I have never come across any book with so many pictures on different kinds of ducks and geese. I believe this book is an excellent source for people who are beginners in waterfowl hunting since they can learn about what different kinds of ducks look like.
My Uncle Dick's work still holds up.......1999-06-16
Like my cousin who said he loves his Grandpa book, I too think it's a great book for those who are looking to know more about the anatomy of ducks. Along with Dick's other books and works, he always put so much effort into everything he did. I was there when many of the pictures for the book were taken. The pictures that look as if they were taken on a real pond were actually done at a pond on property Dick owned. He took a goose decoy, placed an electric motor, prop and controls inside, and a remote controlled camera pointing out from its side. Before his death, he told me he wanted to come up with a way to take pictures of ducks and geese from the air. He talked of developing a remote controlled goose with a camera that would fly. I believe he would have done! It is truely a pleasure to look at my copy of the book and remember his genius.

Vintage excellence!.......2002-03-14
I have read this book twice. I will read it again and again over my waterfowling career if I could only get my copy back from my hunting buddy! If I do not, I will buy it again and chalk this up to not loaning favorite books out. There is a lot of great information in this book and each time you read it you get some additional nuggets. This book hales from the days when duck calling was not that popular especially in the northeast. A man's expertise with his decoys was what brought them in. The modern duck hunter can imagine the challenges if you did not call. Also, it has a great vintage flair to it and takes you back to when the gunning was different. Worth buying and buying in hard cover cause you will want to keep it!
Outdated but a good history of the sport.......1998-09-02
Seriously needs an update. Talks about wooden decoys as the state-of-the-art and fails to note a number of advances we enjoy in the 1998. Would be a good resource for the beginner to get a few of the basics down like do not move in the blind and camoflauge is necessary.
Insightful, well written information for waterfowl hunting.......1998-04-18
Very good information on how to select, rig and
use decoys for the pursuit of waterfowl. Also
good information on blinds and how to use them.
Originaly composed by a hunter who spent his days with the market gunners of yesteryear.
Interesting depictions of how to rig decoys in a mirriad of situations.
A quick read for a wealth of knowledge.
GOOD HUNTING!
Greatest "how to" book on the title subject ever written!.......1997-01-15
Duck hunters are a critical lot when it comes to reviewing
books on the subject. Most primers on rigging duck decoys
are either so basic that the knowledge gained is superceded
by hunting experiences very rapidly. Coykendall's book is a
timeless masterpiece. The techniques described are easy to
understand for beginners, yet should be employed by master
hunters because they work well! The pen-in-ink illustrations
are excellent and could be photocopied to take into the
field. If you are a serious hunter over decoys, this is the
book you must have! It was the first book I ever read on
hunting, and I wish that I had a copy today after 35 years.
It should be reprinted again and again!
